FALL 2013 • ART CLASSES & PROGRAMS

Alliance for the Visual Arts Education Program

Cancellation/Refund Policy

AVA Gallery and Art Center offers a vibrant, year-round art education program for individuals of all ages, ranging in ability from novice to professional. Classes introduce participants to the creative process, teach basic drawing skills, offer students exposure to media ranging from watercolor to sculpture, and encourage the pursuit of advanced study in areas like oil painting, printmaking, and digital photography. AVA’s renowned Children’s Program—which takes place in our welcoming and well-equipped studios—offers preschool and afterschool classes, as well as unique, weeklong art camps coinciding with the vacation calendar of local schools. Creative opportunities for teens abound. AVA draws on a strong faculty composed of nationally and regionally known artists. If you haven’t taken a class at AVA before, you may be in for a surprise. You won’t be striving for grades or credits, because there aren’t any here. Instead you can expect:

If a participant cancels 15 days or more before the first class, the full amount of the tuition will be refunded in the form of a check or as a credit that can be used towards another AVA class within one year of date of issue. If a participant cancels between 14 and 8 days before the first class, half the amount of tuition will be awarded as a credit that can be used towards another AVA class within one year of date of issue. If a participant cancels in 7 days or fewer before the first class, tuition will be forfeited. If, for any reason, AVA needs to cancel a class, participants will be contacted by phone and / or email as soon as the decision is made. Please be certain to provide us with your current contact information at the time of enrollment.

 the freedom to learn in your own style

AVA cancels classes due to bad weather in tandem with the Lebanon School District. Should a class need to be canceled, AVA will contact participants by phone and / or email as soon as the decision is made. Please be certain that you provide us with all necessary contact information when you enroll in a class. AVA also posts weather cancellations via our website, facebook, and twitter feeds, so please check these sites for current weatherrelated class information. Canceled classes will be rescheduled for the first available date—in most cases, the class will be extended by one week. If a canceled class is not rescheduled, participants will receive a refund for the cancelled portion of the course in the form of a check or as a credit that can be used towards another AVA class within one year of date of issue.

Art Works at AVA!

Summer into Fall!

Dear Artists, Friends and Supporters,

Dear AVA Community,

As AVA’s 40th anniversary year continues to manifest itself in one remarkable art event after another, our fall offerings and special events promise to raise the bar yet higher. Throughout the month of October, a brand new series of six art-related films will be screened in our galleries. A dedicated group of AVA artists, including Rich Fedorchak, who is also an experimental filmmaker, have put together an intriguing program that features distinguished guest speakers and visiting filmmakers (see page 12). In the AVA spirit of making art experiences accessible to all, this film series will be free and open to the public. One of the most anticipated events this fall is our September exhibition, celebrating the work of distinguished artist and AVA co-founder Elizabeth (Lili) Mayor. In the course of the past forty years, no one has done more to nurture and further AVA along than Lili, whether as a Board member, gallery director, special events planner, faculty member, exhibiting artist, loyal volunteer or generous donor. Her husband, Michael, and her four children and their families have all contributed in various ways to make AVA a living, vibrant art space (several of her grandchildren are regulars in AVA classes; her daughter, Sloane, an architect with a studio in our building, is an AVA Board member; Michael, a retired orthopedic surgeon with a passion for spending time in his woodworking studio, made the beautiful benches that grace our galleries). Lili’s exhibition will occupy two of our four galleries and will include a retrospective component as well as work that is hot-off-the-press. The works in the other galleries are by artists chosen by Lili. One of the most intriguing aspects of Lili’s work is her constant experimentation, her drive to create work that is fresh and new, yet in a way that is consistent with her personal and, yes, recognizable mode of expression. And therein lies the example that Lili is setting for AVA: while she is always moving forward with new ideas, she never fails to be true to herself and to her own creative vision. Here is to Lili and her forty years with AVA—and to many more creative years to come!

The publication of a new fall brochure is always an exciting time at AVA—a time when we get to announce our many wonderful upcoming educational offerings, exhibitions and special events. It is also a time when we get to reflect on the successes of a full and vibrant summer. Our 20th Annual Juried Summer Exhibition was spectacular, featuring work by many regional artists, both returning and new. That show was followed by a celebratory exhibit of new work by 20 years of past Juried Show winners—a bit of a nod to the artists’ dynamic spirit of always moving forward. At AVA, we share this spirit, this deep desire to remain meaningful, vibrant, and creative. I invite all of you to a special evening on October 27 (see page 7) to not only celebrate our meaningful past but to learn about our exciting new plans as we recommit ourselves to always being dynamic. AVA Summer Interns—Thank You! Each summer, interns play an integral role in AVA’s programming. This year, they were invaluable during the complex planning and preparation of the 20th Annual Juried Summer Exhibition. They also ran the weekly plein air studio at the Lebanon Farmers Market, assisted with the Art Lab sessions and helped with a number of administrative tasks. Special thanks go out to this summer’s crew of highly capable interns! AVA’s 2013 summer internship program was made possible thanks to a grant from The Brie Fund, in memory of Brieanna Weinstein. AVA’s 40th Anniversary-Year Celebrations Abound! What’s Happened and What’s in Store… So far, AVA’s 40th-anniversary year has more than lived up to our tagline—“Art Works at AVA!” The year was ushered in with the Smithsonian traveling exhibition “The Way We Worked.” An array of associated programs and events—lectures, films, readings, and a fabulous Denim Party—resulted in record attendance and great publicity. This special program was recently commended by New Hampshire Humanities Council (NHHC), one of the main sponsors of the exhibition and its related events. Dr. Kathy Mathis, NHHC’s Program Director, wrote: “What AVA developed around the exhibit ‘The Way We Worked’ is a superlative model of the kind of partnerships that help the community cohere and also draw attention to the links over time among people, their work, the architecture of their lives and the places they live.” Another event that caused the “community to cohere” was the free-spirited and colorful “Yarn Bomb Lebanon” public art project, which brought together art and knitters at heart. The project culminated as the knitters gathered by an old tree in Colburn Park to “dress” it up in a most striking outfit. The Valley News’ front page coverage of the “installation” featured the headline “Stitching a Community.” Following on the heels of the yarn bombing project was the impressive exhibition “AVA Beginnings: Work by Founding and Longtime AVA Artists.” The Valley News’ Alex Hanson praised it as “important to our understanding of the art being made now.” He also observed that the individual works on display were “samples of what the gallery itself has fostered as a place for artists to sell their work and teach classes.” Looking to the fall, a much anticipated highlight will be an exhibition celebrating Elizabeth (Lili) Mayor, AVA co-founder and noted contemporary artist. A new film series with art as its focus is scheduled for the month of October; two documentaries on local history will also be shown (see p. 12). Last, but assuredly not least, important plans for AVA’s next 40 years—and beyond—will be announced at a reception on October 27. Much more news will be coming your way. Stay tuned!

AVA’s Green Building Challenge

A New Named Space at AVA

A Work in Progress…

AVA continues to seek major gifts to further the development of its facilities. When appropriate, such gifts are acknowledged by the naming of spaces in accordance with donors’ preferences. Many of AVA’s spaces were named during our major 2007 renovation—most significantly, the Carter-Kelsey building itself! A year ago, a generous grant from the Dwinell Charitable Trust, in support of building improvements and future renovations, was acknowledged with a plaque in our main lobby naming AVA’s “Historical Display Area.” This summer, a most generous gift from Gail and John Wasson was earmarked for a new capital campaign (specifics about this campaign will be announced at a celebratory reception on October 27). Gail and John, longtime friends and supporters of AVA, were delighted to have their gift acknowledged on a plaque in our charming “Children’s Loft.” Our sincere thanks go to both of them for this generous gift—a most promising beginning to a new campaign to broaden our programming in significant ways. As to the appropriateness of naming the Children’s Loft for the Wassons, see the photo (below) taken by Gail. Let it be revealed that, beneath the feathers, Big Bird is none other than John himself!

This past spring, we were pleased to announce a new initiative: AVA’s Green Building Challenge. Its aim is to significantly shrink our carbon footprint, with the goal of making our facility a “net zero” building by 2017. In other words, we hope to have a building that ultimately produces more energy than it consumes. As we continue the conservation efforts that began with our 2007 building renovation, we will also begin tapping into the significant solar-power potential of our site. The first phase of this goal began in May, when we contracted with the Jordan Institute to focus on the energy-saving opportunities inherent in our building and to examine the potential for renewable energy. In hiring the Jordan Institute—New Hampshire’s premier think-tank dedicated to addressing climate change in the built environment through aggressive building efficiency upgrades—we will once again be working with the team that was instrumental in our achieving LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold-certification for our renovation. Jordan’s staff, led by Paul Leveille, is currently analyzing three years of our energy consumption, both thermal and electrical. (It is already evident that the 2011 LED lighting upgrade in our gallery spaces made a significant reduction in kilowatt hours.) The strategy is to reduce the electrical loads as much as possible (measuring devices placed throughout the building will identify areas for improvement), then address the solar potential of AVA’s rooftop as well as other areas capable of producing both thermal and electrical energy. The prospect of making the “new” old CarterKelsey building net zero has energized AVA’s Board, staff and friends. It builds on work that has been accomplished over the past several years and reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability. It is in our DNA: The Arts and the Environment—a winning combination!

Beautiful Artist Studios at AVA AVA’s Carter-Kelsey building is home to 20 beautiful artist studios that feature high ceilings, hardwood floors, natural light, and an enthusiastic community of resident artists—all in our LEED Gold-certified “green” building. Occasionally studios become available. Artists and craftspeople: If you are interested in having a studio at AVA and would like more information or a tour, please contact Tom Bueschel at (603) 448-1855 or StudioRentals@avagallery.org. ava news 6 Support AVA’s 2013-2014 Annual Fund Drive! Contributions to AVA Gallery and Art Center for general support are essential to our continued ability to plan and implement imaginative and meaningful art programming that meets the needs of artists and community members alike. (In some cases, we may even come up with programs that make you realize we are meeting needs you never knew you had!) Long story short: our vibrant offerings are the result of countless hours of planning, brainstorming, and administrative efforts, as well as a constant upgrading of our infrastructure. And that’s where the importance of Annual Fund contributions kicks in! Donations to AVA’s Annual Fund provide general support for our programs and operating budget. We take great pride in the fact that 88% of all gifts to AVA directly support our programs, with a mere 12% going to administration. AVA’s Annual Fund drive is launched in the fall to coincide with the beginning of our fiscal year (September 1). A significant portion of our Annual Fund contributions are traditionally received during the fall months; year’s end is also an important time for such donations. Regardless of when they are given, all Annual Fund contributions help further AVA’s mission in immeasurable ways. To facilitate your giving, you may donate to AVA’s Annual Fund online: www.avagallery.org. In addition to direct, monetary donations, gifts of stock are greatly appreciated. Should you wish to donate shares of stock, please contact AVA’s Executive Director, Bente Torjusen, at 603-448-3117 or bente@avagallery.org for specific information needed to assure proper handling of such gifts. We sincerely thank you for your generous support of AVA’s 2013-2014 Annual Fund drive!

Be Part of AVA’s Annual Meeting Tuesday, November 19, 6-7:30pm All AVA members are cordially invited to our Annual Meeting on Tuesday, November 19, from 6:00 to 7:30pm. Election of new officers and Board members will take place, and the proposed budget for fiscal year 2013-2014 will be discussed and voted on. Refreshments will be served. Please join us!

Leave a Legacy to AVA Join AVA’s Bank Street Society for Planned Giving While AVA’s 40th anniversary year gives us pause to think of where we have come from, it also provides the perfect occasion to think about where we are going. One thing is certain: we would like to see AVA thrive for the next forty years—and beyond! With that in mind, we have established the Bank Street Society for individuals who make planned gifts to AVA. Planned gifts allow you to leave a legacy that will create long-lasting support for AVA and the many art programs that enrich our community. You may designate AVA as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k) Plan or life insurance policy, or you may include AVA in your estate plan with a bequest. Additionally, we are pleased to announce our partnership with Vermont Community Foundation (VCF). With the expert guidance of VCF, you can help sustain AVA into the future with a variety of trust arrangements. For more information on joining the Bank Street Society or about leaving a planned gift to AVA, please contact Bente Torjusen, AVA’s Executive Director, at (603) 448-3117 or bente@avagallery.org .

Save the Date: October 27, 5-7pm Acknowledging the Past, Appreciating the Present, Envisioning the Future On October 27, at the re-screening of the documentary Connecting the Threads—Overalls to Art: the H.W. Carter and Sons Factory, AVA will be recognized for its role in producing the film, which has just been honored with a 2013 Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History. During a reception to follow in our galleries, there will be an announcement of AVA’s exciting new plans for the future. See p. 13.

Remembering S. Whitney Dickey—Art Lover and AVA Supporter par excellence With the death of S. Whitney (Whit) Dickey this past February, we lost one of our staunchest supporters. Together with his widow, Closey, he helped further AVA in innumerable ways. Whit’s business acumen was an invaluable asset to us during a period of substantial growth in the early 1990’s—the result of AVA’s move from a one-room space in Hanover to our ample facilities in Lebanon. When serving as an AVA Board member, it became clear that he cared just as much about supporting our artists as he did about strengthening the financial health of our organization. Whit was an avid art collector. He built a superb corporate collection—mainly the work of AVA artists—for the First NH Bank of Lebanon during the years when he was president of the bank. Just as Whit and Closey rarely missed special events at AVA (see photo), they never missed special opportunities to demonstrate their generosity. The acknowledgement plaque with their names, placed by our main entrance, is a nod to their unfailing support of our organization. Whit’s passion for furthering the arts and for running a fiscally sound organization have set the standard, and we will honor his memory by constantly striving to achieve this balance.

exhibitions 6 From the Exhibition Coordinator 2013 has been and will continue to be a year of compelling exhibitions. Looking back, two in particular come to mind. AVA’s Drawing Invitational and Student Work from the Class Drawn Together: 40 Hours 40 Years!, an idea conceived by faculty member Michael Kraatz, was an absolute pleasure to work on. Designed as a unique program for AVA’s 40th anniversary year, it incorporated two of our organization’s core programs, education and exhibitions. This show compellingly juxtaposed work by students in Kraatz’s drawing class with carefully selected work by artists with close ties to AVA. It made for a beautiful and thought-provoking exhibition. Another delight was the re-opening of Kira’s Garden, the sculpture garden by the east entrance of AVA’s Carter-Kelsey building. Long awaited, it now offers an ongoing opportunity for local and regional artists to show their sculpture in a beautiful outdoor setting. While we are known for our stunning gallery spaces, I urge you to discover the additional unique venues that AVA provides for showcasing artwork in the Upper Valley. As fall begins, you can expect to see fascinating exhibitions in AVA’s Johnson Sisters Library and Stone Carving Studio as well as in the showroom at Pompanoosuc Mills in Thetford, VT. So check out our exhibition schedule and come see what AVA has to offer!

A New Sculpture Installation in Kira’s Garden The new installation of sculpture in Kira’s Garden, which opened simultaneously with AVA’s Twentieth Annual Juried Summer Exhibition, features work by eight New Hampshire artists: Dimitri Gerakaris of Caanan; Sue Katz of Meriden; Michael Kraatz and Susan Russell of Canaan; Phil Lonergan of Campton; Joseph Montroy of Auburn; Justin O’Rourke of Enfield; and Teresa Taylor of Barnstead. The works, unless sold, will be on display in the garden for a year, after which a new display of sculpture will be installed. Inaugurated in 2008, Kira’s Garden was given in memory of Kira Fournier Schore (1950-2002) by her husband, Ben Schore. On permanent display is one of Kira’s bronze sculptures, “Split,” a reclining female figure on a black granite plinth, adjacent to a bench of the same material. Artists interested in submitting a proposal for next year’s installation may download an application from our website: www.avagallery.org or request one by calling AVA at (603) 448-3117.

AVA’s 20th Juried Summer Exhibition—a Great Success!

Margaret Jacobs, Exhibition Coordinator

AVA’s 20th Juried Summer Exhibition was a great success! Juror Colleen Randall, Chair and Professor of Studio Art at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, had the daunting task of selecting artwork from 310 entries submitted by 176 artists from 81 communities throughout Vermont and New Hampshire. Randall, who was also the juror for AVA’s First Annual Summer Exhibition in 1993, chose 83 works by 73 artists for this exhibition. Juror’s Recognition Awards were given to Toby Bartles of White River Junction, VT for his charcoal drawing, Untitled #1; to Michael Heffernan of Newbury, VT for his charcoal drawing, Sitting, Reading, Sleeping; and to Joseph Saginor of Cornish, NH for his oil painting, A Day at the Beach.

The Cornelia M. Rahmelow Photography Prize, chosen by photographer Jon Gilbert Fox along with Randall, went to Leah Berry of Canaan, NH for her digital inkjet print, Act One: Scene Backstage—Transformation. The Best Presentation Award, chosen by Daniel Kelly of Dukes Art & Frame Shop, went to Camille Ames of Norwich, VT for Accumulate, a work created with water, glass and steel. Honorable Mention awards went to Kirsten Carruth of Rumney, NH; Alexandra P. Lucas of Plainfield, NH; Carl Mehrbach of Lyme, NH and Shawna Gibbs of Claremont, NH.

AVA’s Annual Holiday Exhibition

Open House!

AVA’s exhibition program continues to be as vibrant as ever. Along with the displays in our beautiful gallery spaces, there are several additional opportunities to see shows this fall, including in our Johnson Sisters Library and Stone Carving Studio. An exhibition of artwork by Winkie Kelsey will open in the Stone Carving Studio on August 23. Kelsey—artist, longtime teacher and benefactor, whose impact on AVA has been considerable—will be showing stone carvings, paintings, and ink drawings. All proceeds from the sale of her work will benefit AVA. For the second consecutive year, AVA is collaborating with Pompanoosuc Mills in a monthlong exhibition in their Thetford, VT showroom. The exhibition, A Celebration of Upper Valley Artists, will run through September 22 and feature work by a selection of local artists with associations to AVA. Opening on September 7 in our main galleries will be an exhibition titled Four Decades, Four Artists. This exhibition will showcase and celebrate the artwork of AVA co-founder Elizabeth (Lili) Mayor; Lili also selected artwork by Colleen Randall, Jon Keenan and Clifford B. West (1916-2006) to be exhibited concurrently. October 11 will open an exhibition titled AVA Selections, which will feature twenty artists with special associations to AVA. Simultaneously, an exhibition of encaustics, photographs and watercolors by Linda Roesch will be displayed in AVA’s Johnson Sisters Library. Linda’s commitment to art and to AVA have been inseparable, and she continues to play an integral role in furthering our organization. Please see page 8 for our full exhibition schedule, including gallery talks.

Art Lab, the imaginative art program for adults with special needs, begins its 10-week fall program on September 4 in AVA’s South Studio. As previous, the morning session will meet from 9:30 to 11am and the afternoon session will meet from 3:30 to 5pm. All classes meet on Wednesdays. To register, please contact Pam Blair at Special Needs Support Center (SNSC): pam@snsc-uv.org or (603) 448-1268. Art Lab is supported in part by a grant from the Highfield Foundation and by SNSC. On Saturday, September 21, from 11am to 4pm, weekly CAOS (Community Arts Open Studio) resumes. This favorite family drop-in program takes place on most Saturdays throughout the school year (please call 603-448-3117 to check the schedule during holidays). Materials are provided, and the cost is $5 per child. CAOS is supported in part by a grant from the Highfield Foundation. ART STOP!—the free afterschool program that encourages youths in grades 5–8 to take inspiration from AVA’s ongoing exhibitions to create their own drawings, paintings, and sculptures—begins again on September 24. Meeting weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 5pm, ART STOP! is made possible through 2013 thanks to a generous grant from the Couch Family Foundation. AVA is seeking sponsorship to continue ART STOP! for 2014. CAOS for Toddlers (CAT), a weekly program on Friday mornings, 9:30 to 11:30am, for children 1–4 years old, begins again on September 20. Caregivers must remain with their toddlers and are expected to help with clean-up. Materials are provided, and participation is $5 per child. CAOS for Toddlers is made possible in part thanks to a grant from The Pauline Davenport Children’s Fund of the Vermont Community Foundation. This fall, AVA’s partnership with the Grafton County Senior Citizens Center (GCSCC) will continue with another Senior Art Class. Seniors are invited to work on inspired art projects for $5 per class from 9am to 12noon every Friday from September 13 to November 1. A free lunch will be provided by the GCSCC. Senior Art Class this fall is partially funded by The Rebecca G. Williams Fund of AVA Gallery and Art Center’s Scholarship Fund. To register, please call AVA: (603) 448-3117.

The Mudroom Launch AVA Launches a Quarterly Social Gathering First Program: “Getting Schooled” Thursday, September 19, 7-9pm Deadline for Submissions: September 1 The Mudroom, an exciting new initiative modeled after NPR’s The Moth Radio Hour, will kick off this fall in AVA’s beautiful galleries. This program, the brainchild of AVA Board member and physician Emily Ridgway, is designed as a social gathering venue for adults in the Upper Valley, offering an opportunity to meet new people, enjoy a fun evening, and connect with friends. Please join the group to hear amazing real-life stories that might otherwise go unshared. The first gathering of this quarterly program will be on Thursday, September 19th from 7 to 9pm. The evening’s theme, “Getting Schooled,” will be brought to life as five pre-selected individuals share personal accounts of what it means to “Get Schooled.” Please join the launch of this exciting series. If you would like to share a story, please send an email to mudroom@avagallery.org. Open to the public, adults only please. Refreshments will be available. And save the date: Thursday, December 5th, for the next Mudroom at AVA, when another theme, to be announced, will be explored.

Public Art in Our Community Make art a part of everyday life has long been an AVA imperative. Some recent projects demonstrate ways that AVA has made art a part of your life and the lives of others. AVA’s free outdoor art table at the Lebanon Farmers Market provided a playful artmaking experience for the whole family this summer. Teens in AVA’s 2013 Food and Art Mural Camp investigated local food sources, visiting Cedar Circle Farm in Thetford, VT to learn about growing fruits and vegetables. They then created a series of 3’ x 6’ paintings that were displayed in Lebanon’s Colburn Park during the month of August.

Participants in our 2013 Linocut and a Public Art Project handprinted 200 pizza boxes in partnership with Cantore’s Pizza and Ziggy’s Pizza, both of West Lebanon, NH. Once embellished with original art, the boxes were used for pizza orders, delivering spontaneous free art to 200 Upper Valley households! This fall, you’re invited to be part of Sculpture Modeling, Plaster Casting and Public Art!, a class that partners AVA with businesses from the PowerHouse Mall. Participants will make original sculptures, learn to create molds, then cast a series of plaster replicas that will be part of this year’s Halloween celebrations! (p. 22)

Herb & Dorothy

(Directed by Megumi Sasaki, 2008, 87 minutes) This award-winning documentary tells the story of Herb and Dorothy Vogel, who on a shoestring budget amassed one of the world’s great collections of minimalist and conceptual art. As Herb once famously observed, “You don’t have to be a Rockefeller to collect art.” Michael R. Taylor, Director of the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, will introduce the film and discuss the role of the contemporary art collector.

Bone Wind Fire

(Directed by Jill Sharpe, 2013 Winner of Best Canadian Film at Montreal’s International Festival of Films on Art, 30 minutes) Bone Wind Fire is a visual meditation on the work and inner lives of Georgia O’Keefe, Emily Carr and Frida Kahlo, revealing each artist’s distinct creative concerns and processes through their letters and diaries. Director and painter Jill Sharpe will make a special guest appearance to present a post-screening discussion of her filmmaking process and the vivid work of her subjects.

Five Contemporary Multi-Media Artists (est. film time 90 minutes) This evening of film will feature five contemporary artists who also use video as a creative medium: Gina Adams, Rich Fedorchak, Roger Goldenberg, Case Zepeda-Hathaway and Torin Porter. Works by Adams, Goldenberg and Porter will concurrently be on display in the exhibit AVA Selections. Margaret Jacobs, AVA’s Exhibition Coordinator, will moderate a post-screening panel discussion.

Beauty Is Embarrassing

(Directed by Neil Berkeley, 2012, 87 minutes) Tennessee-born Wayne White—musician, cartoonist, puppeteer, videographer, sculptor and painter— narrates this irreverent documentary about his ups and downs in the worlds of commerce and art. Director Neil Berkeley follows White across the gritty urban landscapes of his past and present, enjoying White’s profane and rambunctious company as the artist attempts to balance family, work, play, and his overweening need for creative freedom. This balancing act will be the topic of a post-film discussion moderated by Geri DeLuca, AVA artist and chair of our 40th anniversary-year events.

Herb & Dorothy 50X50

(Directed by Megumi Sasaki, 2013, 87 minutes) Herb & Dorothy 50X50, a sequel to the award-winning documentary Herb & Dorothy, looks at the legacy of the fabled art collectors and their remarkable gift to the nation—The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: 50 Works for 50 States. When the National Gallery of Art, the initial recipient of more than 4,000 works from the Vogel collection, found this abundance was more than they could manage, the solution was to give 50 of the works to a museum in each of the 50 states, the Hood Museum of Art among them. This new film, which will premiere in New York City in fall 2013, also reflects on Herb’s recent passing and how this middle-class couple redefined what it means to be an art collector. Director Michael R. Taylor will introduce the film in the context of the Hood Museum of Art’s fifty works from the Vogel Collection.

The Artist as Filmmaker: A Program of Short Experimental Films (est. film time 90 minutes.) Artists have been exploring film as a medium of expression since the dawn of cinema. The techniques and artistic concerns of small-gauge experimental films are distinct from mainstream cinema, and this evening’s program will explore why and how. Led by veteran experimental filmmaker and longtime AVA artist Rich Fedorchak, this presentation will feature short films by early, historically important avantgarde filmmakers as well as films by contemporary experimentalists, ranging from Man Ray to Jan Svankmajer, Jodie Mack, and Stacey Steers. Bostonbased Tara Merenda Nelson will be present to screen and discuss her film. And…to cap the evening’s offering, there will be a Halloween surprise!

Carter-Kelsey Building Documentary Receives National Award of Merit AVA to Re-screen Connecting the Threads—Overalls to Art: The H.W. Carter & Sons Factory Sunday, October 27, 5:00pm Free admission Connecting the Threads—Overalls to Art: The H.W. Carter & Sons Factory, a 37-minutelong documentary film focusing on the history of work in AVA’s own historic building, is receiving a national award. Co-produced by Historic New England, CATV and AVA, and premiered here in January 2013, the documentary is the recipient of a 2013 Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History. This awards program, initiated in 1945, is the most prestigious national recognition of achievement in the preservation and interpretation of local, state and regional history. Kenneth C. Turino, Historic New England’s Manager of Community Engagement and Exhibitions and the director of this documentary, will accept the award in September at a ceremony in Birmingham, AL. Turino will present the award to AVA at the October 27 event. At the reception following the screening, there will be opportunities to talk with former Carter factory workers about the past as well as with AVA’s Board and staff about our plans for the future.

Thelma Follensbee, who worked in the H.W. Carter & Sons overall factory from age 16 until the factory closed in 1985, was among the former workers interviewed for the award-winning documentary “Connecting the Threads.” Thelma, who died this March at the age of 94, vividly recalled her career as a factory seamstress and her important work as president of a local labor union chapter and vice president of the New Hampshire Labor Council. At the January 13 premiere of the documentary film, Thelma was a sparkling presence. She also turned out on January 26 to celebrate AVA’s Denim Party,

looking chic in high heels and fancy embroidered jeans (sewn by herself, of course). Little did we know that she had been in Hospice care since December. In a card we received after her death, one of Thelma’s daughters wrote: “Last December, we were not sure she would make the January date. She set this as a target goal, and she made it. She often talked about this experience, and I know it was a highlight of her last months with us.” Thelma’s dignity and strength were beautifully captured in this photo by Jack Rowell, taken during the interviews.

Hand of Brick: Densmore Brick Company—A Look Back A Documentary Film by Stefan van Norden Saturday, October 19, 7:00pm  Free Admission Stefan van Norden’s documentary film on the Densmore Brick Company—a renowned Lebanon brickyard from the early 1800s to its closing in 1976— will premiere at AVA on Saturday, October 19 at 7pm. A resident of Hanover, NH, and a gardener by trade, van Norden had long been fascinated by the factory’s decaying beehive kilns (see photo) located next to a large clay pond near Lebanon High School. When he decided to make a documentary film on the history of the brickyard and the process of brickmaking, van Norden searched for former workers by placing ads in local papers. His search culminated in interviews with fifteen individuals, all of whom appear in the film. Many of the brick buildings in the Upper Valley were constructed with Densmore brick, including buildings in Lebanon as well as the Dartmouth College campus in Hanover, NH. There will be a reception following the October 19 screening at AVA, as well as an opportunity to talk with former Densmore Brick Company workers.

“Painting in oil presents as many problems as there are artists working in this complex and challenging medium.”—Clifford B. West This course is for students beginning in the medium of oil as well as those who are interested in revisiting fundamental techniques and processes. We will discover the anatomy of a painting by engaging in each phase of the building process. We will learn about preparing the support: building stretchers, stretching and sizing the canvas, and preparing a gessoed panel. We will also learn about the materials: pigments, binders, and mediums. In addition, we will explore color: the palette, mixing, under-painting, and glazing. Students will work towards a personal means of exploration.

Have you always wanted to draw or paint a portrait? Have you tried, but want to get better? This class will cover all the basics of portraiture.
