Crested Butte Mountain Resort + Vail Resorts: A conversation with VP & General Manager, Tim Baker
Vail Resort’s recent acquisition of Crested Butte Mountain Resort has ignited a conversation across Colorado and put Crested Butte on the map as a destination for many who once overlooked the quaint and historic mountain town. At the end of the 2018/2019 ski season we connected with Tim Baker, Crested Butte Mountain Resort’s VP and General Manager to hear about his outlook on the acquisition, town, the mountain, summer activities, and more! Julie: Can you give a brief history of how CBMR transferred ownership to Vail Resorts? Tim Baker: “On June 4, 2018, it was announced that Vail Resorts was acquiring Triple Peaks, LLC from the Mueller family, including Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Okemo Mountain Resort and Mount Sunapee Resort. The acquisition closed on Sept. 27, 2018. Skiers and snowboarders with the Epic Pass were able to enjoy Crested Butte Mountain Resort for the 2018/2019 season.” Julie: What was the strategy to mesh large-scale Vail Resorts with more of a small, destination resort? Were there any branding changes or repositioning? Tim Baker: “Vail Resorts is interested in offering Epic Pass holders a diverse array of world-class ski resorts. Crested Butte

is no exception as it offers some of the nation’s best-advanced in-bounds terrain, plus a delightful and historic downtown. There have been no significant branding changes, but rather encouragement to further define the “true brand” of this fantastic mountain and how it best relates to the surrounding community.” Julie: How would you describe the overall success or learnings from the first season Crested Butte Mountain Resort was included on the Epic Pass? Tim Baker: “The leadership team at Crested Butte Mountain Resort continues to thoughtfully assess opportunities to improve the guest experience. One thing that has clearly been recognized is how passionate and enthusiastic the local skiers and riders are; as well as, how much visiting guests enjoy the combination of the mountain and culture of the town. Crested Butte is certainly viewed as a desirable destination for many of our pass holders.” Julie: What changes and/or improvements were made before the start of the 2018/2019 season? Tim Baker: “Integration into the Vail Resorts network included behind-the-scenes changes to various point of sale and other information technology systems around the resort. The only significant “guest-facing” change was that CBMR implemented
RFID-scanning technology at the base of some chairlifts. This RFID technology allows guest passes to be scanned through their outerwear rather than being required to be pulled out of a pocket each time they prepare to load the chairlift. A significant amount of resources were also directed at the lifts to ensure they were ready to go for opening day.” Julie: There is a chair lift dating back to 1979 on the mountain, the Teocalli lift. This lift was closed for the 2018/2019 season. What are the plans in store for replacing the lift? Tim Baker: “You are correct that the existing Teocalli Lift did not operate during the 2018-19 winter season. Plans to replace the lift can be found at news.crestedbutte.vailresorts.com.” Julie: What other improvements are in store for Crested Butte Mountain Resort? Tim Baker: “We intend to take our time in thoughtfully assessing the operations of Crested Butte Mountain Resort, including prioritizing which proposed plans and capital improvement projects will provide the greatest benefit to the guest experience. The resort has announced that the Teocalli Lift will be replaced this summer, pending U.S. Forest Service approval.”
Julie: How do you view the acquisition benefiting the Crested Butte area in the long-term? Tim Baker: “We are very excited to have the opportunity to invite Epic Pass holders to experience CBMR’s incredible terrain as well as the charm of downtown Crested Butte and the entire Gunnison Valley. Behind the Scenes of the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival
with Executive Director Michelle Bivens The Crested Butte Wildflower Festival is a 9-day event that takes place each year in July. Summer 2019 will mark the event’s 33rd anniversary. The flower-focused festival includes hikes, tours, workshops and performances, and raises awareness of environmental issues, including the importance of preserving our native wildflowers. Thousands flock from around the nation, even the world, to see the mountains around Crested Butte painted every color of the rainbow. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with the festival’s executive director, Michelle Bivens. Through our conversation you could see and feel her passion for the event and the wildflowers. Read further for the insider scoop on the 2019 Crested Butte Wildflower Festival. Julie: Can you tell me a little bit about yourself? How did you come to Crested Butte? What’s your backstory and current involvement in the community? Michelle: “I’ve been coming to Crested Butte for family vacations since I was about 6 years old. My dad and I would check out wildflower books from the Denver library before we came, so wildflowers have always been very near and dear to my heart. When I graduated from college, I would backpack in the area and this was always my favorite place to go. In 2012, my husband and I finally decided to take the leap and move here.” Julie: What a great history you have with the valley! How did you become involved with the festival?

Michelle: “I was working remotely teaching online high school and I joined the board of the Wildflower Festival. Things shifted around and I was able to step into the Executive Director role and here we are!” Julie: Can you give us background of the festival’s origin and what the event was like in the first few years of production? Michelle: “The women that started the festival started it as a way to promote summers in Crested Butte. This was before mountain biking and all the other summer activities; unlike today, summers weren’t very busy around here in 1986! They wanted to hold an event to celebrate the wildflowers but also to put Crested Butte on the map as a summer destination. These women were successful in getting the festival off the ground, but it was much smaller than it is today. They later entered into a partnership with Rocky Mountain Biological Labs and the Town of Crested Butte to acquire a designation of Wildflower Capital of Colorado from the Colorado State Legislature. Julie: What factors make the wildflowers in Crested Butte worthy of being the Wildflower Capital of Colorado? Michelle: “The geology of the area and the soils are very unique in the Crested Butte valley. There are many different types of rocks and soils that hold moisture better than anywhere else in Colorado. The moisture that results from our huge snowfall
contributes as well. Ironically, the soil here is not too great for trees, which is why you see a lot of wide open hillsides and meadows in the area. These conditions are an incubator for the wildflowers; we like to call them “wildflowers on steroids.” Our high alpine wildflowers are able to survive above the tree line because of the unique characteristics they have developed –one of the talks we have scheduled is about how truly unique wildflowers are!” Julie: How many different types of wildflowers are in this area? Michelle: “According to Rick Reavis, author of the Rocky Mountain Flower Guide for Crested Butte and Beyond, flower enthusiasts might encounter nearly 233 wildflowers during a visit to Crested Butte.” Julie: The Wildflower Festival produces over 200 events within about a week span. How do you staff an event of this size? Tell us about the community involvement with the festival. Michelle: “There are about 218 events this year and we are incredibly excited for each and every one! I have an incredible team around me, several seasonal part-time staff from Western just down the road and dozens of local volunteers. We would not be able to put on such an event without them! Taking a hike with a local who has lived here for 40+ years, learning to photography flowers from a professional photographer or enjoying a meal provided by a local restaurant really takes the festival beyond just learning about flowers to becoming part of the community. Julie: How can people get involved if they want to help? Michelle: “We have many different volunteer options for those wanting to help ranging from working at the initial check in to volunteering out in the field - we can always use an extra set of hands! Interested volunteers can visit our website crestedbuttewildflowerfestival.com or email us at info@ cbwildflower.com and we’ll get them on-board with training and information.” Julie: With so many events to choose from, how should festival goers map out events and activities to make the most of their time here? Michelle: “I recommend coming to the opening reception for live music, a morning tour with Rocky Mountain Biological Labs, participating in some of the fun activities and then catching one of the free speaking events at the Center for the Arts. There are so many events, it really depends on where your interests lie. You can study photography or other visual art, learn about geology, connect flowers and food, simply enjoy a guided hike through waist high flowers or a little bit of everything.” Julie: This year the festival is featuring new children’s events. Why did you feel it was important to add these and can you tell our readers about what they are? Michelle: “The festival originated with the intent to bring in visitors. We have about 2,000 participants over the course of
the festival week. Taking this into consideration, we wanted to figure out how to better serve the local community, as well as our visitors. We can do this through kids programs! There are more kids in Crested Butte than there are available kids programs in the summer time. Our goal is to spread our mission to younger people because that is the perfect place to start developing sound stewardship for positive environmental practices. There will be a kids camp every day from 7.30 am – 4.30 pm which will allow parents to get out and participate in the activities they want to! Kids will participate in hikes to identify flowers and they will plant a garden too. One thing we strive to do with our kids program is to make it affordable to best serve our community and visitors.” Julie: What else is new to the festival this year? Michelle: “One totally new thing we’re trying this year is a series of free speaking events. These will be opportunities for people to come and learn about flowers without having to pay anything. We want people to get interested and engaged while hearing from the experts. I am very excited to have Paige Embry come speak about native bees and their importance but also how native bees and honey bees can be misunderstood. We have at least 3 of these free events so consider adding one or more to your schedule.” Julie: What is the one takeaway you hope visitors will have after they head home from the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival in regard to preservation and wildflower etiquette? Michelle: “Our message and preservation campaign is simply, “don’t pick the flowers.” Most people don’t realize they’re doing anything wrong but we want people to understand that the flowers cannot reproduce once picked. They are very delicate & fragile and we do not want to take them for granted. “ Julie: Tips for festival-goers? Bring this? Plan that? Michelle: “Bring the right gear - sunscreen, rain gear, bug spray, hat, water and snacks! And good hiking shoes. Car pool to trail heads to minimize the impact on the trailhead. The earlier you start, the less crowded the trails will be. Especially if the trails are close to town. 11 am – 2pm can get crazy out there!” Julie: What does it mean to be a Crested Butte Wildflower Festival Member? Michelle: “We are a non-profit organization and we rely on our members, sponsors and donors for approximately 30% of our operational expenses. . Membership is very affordable; the entrylevel membership fee is only $25. Members get access to early registration for festival events and also get to vote and choose the Wildflower Festival poster to represent the event!
