CANBERRA REGION

With one in five people with accessibility needs, it is critical to consider accessibility when planning your event, to avoid excluding a significant portion of potential attendees.

GetAboutAble is a Canberra-based social enterprise that empowers people with mobility, hearing, vision, and other accessibility needs, and works to help the events, travel, and business sectors be more inclusive for people with disability.

With a mission to support and include people of all abilities, GetAboutAble works with Canberra-based operators and venues, ranging from budget to luxury providers, who have accessible and inclusive features and are committed to the goal of being as accessible and inclusive as possible.

GetAboutAble also offers consulting services for meeting and event planners. The organisation supports event professionals by creating accessibility checklists for event planning and venue selection, providing content guidance for website accessibility pages, and providing and sourcing relevant suppliers.

Accessibility Considerations For Meeting Planners

Below are some considerations to ensure your next event is accessible and inclusive to all delegates.

• Involve people with a disability in planning your event to provide a lived perspective

• Include a question on accessibility requirements in your event registration to ensure you cater to every guest’s needs

• Have an accessibility page on your event website, including information covering mobility, vision, hearing, and neurodiverse access needs

• Provide accessibility information on what is, and isn’t, available so delegates can make an informed decision about whether it suits their needs

• Include adequate signage, easy to read maps, and clear pathways

• Provide accessible parking including safe drop off zones

• Provide accessible toilet facilities

• Promote your accessibility features in your event communications

While this list is a good start, it is not exhaustive. To access consulting services and improve accessibility at your event, contact GetAboutAble on contact@getaboutable.com
