CANBERRA REGION

Cool Climate Wine Region

It was a few scientists who decided to plant the initial vines in the surrounds of Canberra many decades ago. These days, the Canberra District Wine Region is home to 140 vineyards and more than 30 boutique cellar doors, and has firmly cemented a reputation for creating some of Australia’s best cool-climate wines. The climate creates the perfect conditions for both shiraz and riesling, which are the area’s standout varietals, but there are plenty of lesser-known varieties and blends to explore.

Taste your way through wines at Contentious Character in Wamboin, or delegates can sip and sleep amongst the vines at Tallagandra Hill Winery in Gundaroo.

For a VIP group, head to Shaw Wines in Murrumbateman for a dining and tasting experience in the private cellar dining room.

Southern Tablelands

Take a short drive from Canberra City in any direction and you’ll stumble across charming country towns steeped in history. You can shop for locally crafted goods, explore art, or settle in for home-made treats in Yass or Bungendore.

Taste your way around the local wines, chocolates, and other delicacies in Murrumbateman, feel like you’ve stepped back in time in the quaint town of Braidwood, or be amazed by 400-million-year-old rock formations in the caverns of Wombeyan Caves.

National Parks And Nature Reserves

Canberra is known as the bush capital for a reason – no matter where you are, green spaces or nature reserves are never far away.

Close to town, a short but heart-pumping hike up Mount Ainslie or Black Mountain will reward you with panoramic views over the capital in every direction. A bit further afield, Namadgi National Park and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve offer spots for walking, biking, fishing, animal spotting or exploring archaeological sites dating back over 21,000 years.

Nearby, delegates can also experience a tour of the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, which forms part of NASA’s Deep Space Network.

Canberra boasts an enviable location, close to everything and right in the heart of some of the most picturesque places in Australia. When you hold your event in Canberra, delegates can visit the award-winning Canberra District Wine Region, and the pristine countryside of the Alpine region, or delight in the rural charm of the Southern Tablelands, and the warm hospitality and fresh seafood of the South Coast.

Alpine Adventures

Just 2.5 hours drive south of Canberra, Australia’s Alpine region is a must-visit for snow enthusiasts, with some of the best skiing and snowboarding opportunities in the country across the slopes of Perisher, Thredbo, Guthega, Charlotte Pass and the family-friendly Selwyn Snowfields. But there’s also plenty to do once the snow melts. It’s an area flush with world-class mountain biking trails, crystal clear streams for fishing, and untouched bushland to discover on horseback. For those keen to explore on foot and enjoy the crisp mountain air, head out on a hunt for wildflowers, or tackle Australia’s highest peak and hike to the top of Mount Kosciuszko. Afterwards, take a dip at the natural thermal pool at the caves of Yarrangobilly.

For events and boutique accommodation, Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa is a picturesque place for delegates to meet, work, or unwind.

Canberra South Coast

Take a step back from a busy conference program with a trip to the south coast, just two hours’ drive from Canberra. Stretching from Jervis Bay, which is a territory that is part of the ACT, right down the Sapphire Coast, it’s a region of unspoilt coastline, and an undeniably relaxed pace. Here delegates can indulge in fresh, local oysters, meander through historic villages, swim at white sandy beaches, whale watch from the shore, and experience Indigenous culture. The area boasts more than 30 national parks, and marine and nature reserves offering an idyllic spot to reconnect with nature.

For a conference venue with a difference, the architecturally designed Willinga Park at Bawley Point offers sophisticated spaces with a leafy outlook.
