Corto Maltese: il personaggio

Hugo Pratt: l’autore
Hugo Pratt è nato il 15 giugno del 1927, a Rimini, ma ha vissuto tutta la sua infanzia a Venezia in un ambiente familiare cosmopolita. Nel 1945 realizza il suo primo fumetto: l’Asso di Picche. Nel 1949, contattato da un’importante casa editrice argentina, Hugo Pratt parte per Buenos Aires rimanendovi per circa tredici anni. Rientrato in Italia dopo una parentesi londinese, dal ‘62 al ‘67 Pratt disegna per Il Corriere dei Piccoli. Nel 1967 scrive “Una ballata del mare salato” dove esordisce il personaggio di Corto Maltese che continuerà a disegnare nel corso di quasi 30 anni per complessive 29 storie. Il successo di Corto Maltese in Francia, si propaga dapprima in Italia e poi in tanti altri paesi. Hugo Pratt lascia Genova e si stabilisce a Parigi continuando però a viaggiare per il mondo e diventando lui stesso un vero “personaggio”. Il 1988 è l’anno della pubblicazione di Mu, l’ultima avventura di Corto Maltese, sull’omonima rivista Rizzoli, il libro uscirà nel 1992. Nel 1994 fonda a Roma la casa editrice Lizard che attualmente pubblica tutta la sua opera. Hugo Pratt ha vissuto dal 1983 in Svizzera, nella sua casa di Grandvaux sul lago di Losanna, dove muore il 20 agosto 1995.
Hugo Pratt was born on 15th June 1927 in Rimini from a very cosmopolitan family environment but he spent all his childhood in Venice, a melting-pot of races, beliefs and cultures steady mixing one with the other. In 1936 his father Roland was transferred to the Italian colony in Abyssinia, which marked the beginning of Hugo Pratt’s youth in Africa. During that period he got interested in adventure novels, eagerly reading novels and discovering the first American adventure comic strips. In 1943, after the death of his father, he returned to Italy and attended the military college in Città di Castello. In 1949 Hugo Pratt left for Argentina to work for an important publishing house, he lived in Buenos Aires for about thirteen years. From the summer of 1959 to the summer of 1960, Hugo Pratt lived in London. In 1962 Hugo Pratt decided to return to Italy where in 1967 published a monthly magazine entitled Sgt. Kirk: in the first issue of that magazine, appeared nine plates of a new comic book entitled “Ballad of the Salt Sea” featuring for the first time the character of Corto Maltese.

Hugo Pratt: Biography
Corto Maltese reappeared in April 1970 in the comic series “The Secret of Tristan Bantam”, which, being published in French weekly magazine Pif, a magazine with a great circulation. The success of Corto Maltese in France spread first to Italy and then to many other countries. From 1971 on, Pratt was considered by comic experts as one of the most important cartoonists in the world. From 1983 on, Hugo Pratt lived in Switzerland in his home in Grandvaux on the Lake of Lausanne, where he died on 20th August 1995.
