Southern Idaho Soaks

A Guide to Hot Springs Pools

Looking for a warm adventure on a cold day? Southern Idaho is home to several hot springs resorts, perfect for a day or weekend trip.

W

inters in Idaho can be a great time to get out and explore. Despite the cold and, perhaps, snowy, weather, you'll find many opportunities to enjoy what our state has to offer. Here, we've listed a few of the hot springs resorts that are a fairly easy and short drive from the Treasure Valley. The Springs at Idaho City Just 45 minutes from downtown Boise, The Springs offers a large

soaking pool, as well as four private tubs, bodywork, and lodging at Inn the Pines. Discounted "night soak" prices start at $17, with regular prices beginning at $20 for a day pass. Private pools start at $45 per hour per couple. Reservations are required for all pools. The resort is open every day but Tuesday.

Gold Fork Hot Springs Gold Fork Hot Springs are a series of six pools formed by natural rock formations, with water temperatures ranging from 85110°F, depending on which pool you choose. The facility includes a sandy pool for kids, and even the sidewalks are heated.

To get to The Springs, travel north on Highway 21 towards Idaho City. The resort is located on the left just past mile marker 37.

Open every day but Tuesday, Gold Fork is just over two hours from Boise. Head north on Highway 55 toward McCall, and follow Davis

COLDWELL BANKER TOMLINSON GROUP

PAGE 5 Creek Lane and Gold Fork Road just south of Donnelly. Though the roads are clearly marked, make note that they can be bumpy and rough. Reservations are not required. Burgdorf Hot Springs In the winter, Burgdorf Hot Springs is accessible by snowmobile only and is about a 30-mile trek. Visitors can enjoy a limited lunch and dinner, and an office is open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily.

Givens Hot Springs Located about an hour southwest of Boise along the Snake River, Givens Hot Springs was established in 1881 by pioneers Milford and Mattie Givens and is currently owned and operated by the Givens' great-grandchildren. The resort is open every day from noon to 9:00 p.m. and features a newly renovated pool. Prices range from $5.00 to $8.00. RV and dry camping is available year'round.

Cabins are available for rent, but be prepared! You must bring your own bedding that is warm enough for winter weather. Each cabin does have a fireplace, and wood is provided. Note, though, that the facilities are rustic.

To get to Givens from Boise, take I-84 west to Nampa exit 33, and turn right on Karcher Road/ Highway 55. Follow Highway 55 for 14 miles to the Marsing bridge, and turn left on Highway 78 for 11 miles.

From Lake Street in McCall, turn right on Warren Wagon Road and travel for approximately 28 miles to Burgdorf Road/NF-246.

1000 Springs Resort The only indoor hot springs in the Hagerman area, 1000 Springs Resort is an easy two-hour trip

from Boise. The resort features a large geothermal pool, as well as 15 indoor private hot tubs, a kiddie pool, diving boards, and a waterslide. A certified lifeguard is on duty. A snack bar is also available. Campsites and cabins are available for rent year 'round. Hours vary, so check the website before heading out. To get to Hagerman, head east on I-84 to exit 141 at Bliss. Follow US 30 to Hagerman and Chisholm Drive. While winters in the Treasure Valley can seem long and drab, you can create your own adventure by exploring more than just the usual suspects. Plan to travel a different direction from Boise each month, and let us know what you find!

Hiring Movers

Critical Questions to Ask

Is your plan to Google "Moving Companies'? You might want to rethink that strategy. Here are some important questions to ask. Laura McHolm Co-Founder, NorthStar Moving

S

ure, you were thinking you would just Google “moving company.” You will find a zillion moving companies, but are you ready to hand over your baby grand piano or other prized possessions into any stranger’s hands? How do you choose the mover you can trust? Here are some handy tips on what to look for when hiring a mover. First, when choosing a moving company, reputation is crucial. A great reputation saves you time and money. And, a great reputation equals great rates. No

one ever says: “oh yes, I LOVE this company. They just made me overpay for their crappy service.” So, if you take away only one tip: It’s choose your mover based on reputation. How do you know who to trust with all your worldly possessions? Asking key questions not only uncovers a wealth of knowledge about the company and helps prepare you for moving day, but a little extra research can save you from a huge hassle in the long run. Here are some surefire questions to ask before hiring a mover:

COLDWELL BANKER TOMLINSON GROUP

• How long has the moving company been in business? Experience counts and a track record shows their ability to deliver each and every time. They have moved countless kids clay handprints and know they are simply irreplaceable: no amount of insurance is going to ever give you those back. • Are they licensed? If you are looking for a moving company to move you from state to state, the company should have a US DOT number, which is a unique license number issued by the

PAGE 9 United States Department of Transportation. Make sure your mover’s DOT number is valid by searching it in this database. Take the time to search a specific company’s safety and complaint records HERE.

• Is the company insured? Never use a moving company without a license number or insurance. Think underage unlicensed teenage driver at the wheel of a semi-truck. Not a good idea, right? Neither is an unlicensed or uninsured bunch of folks who call themselves a moving company or group of dudes who really only do moving as a side job. Also, check to see if your personal items are covered during a move under your homeowners or renters’ policy. If not, you may want to consider supplemental moving insurance. • Have they won any awards or accolades for service? Can they show you any letters of recommendation? If they haven’t won any awards for service, chances are they aren’t going to win any awards from you. Remember a great reputation absolutely saves you money. NO ONE gives a glowing review to a company that overpromised, under-delivered and overcharged. • Be sure to check out the company’s rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Social media sites such as Yelp,

Citysearch and TrustLink will also give you a look into other people’s experiences with the company. • Low rates don’t necessarily mean a low final bill. Study rates! What do their rates really include? Are fuel charges incorporated? Also, just like the airlines, rates can vary based on season and days of the week. Will they give you a better rate if you move on a Sunday as opposed to a Monday? • If you are moving out of state, ask the company to explain in detail its consolidation policy and delivery windows. Consolidation is when your belongings are combined with other people’s and shipped together. It’s a great way to save money, but be aware that it will add time to the delivery schedule because multiple stops for the other folks’ deliveries are made as your belongings travel across the country. • Is the moving company forthcoming about the fact that long distance moves almost always involve a delivery window, as opposed to an exact delivery date? It’s better to know all this up front so you can pack a suitcase that stays with you. You don’t want to start your new job in your gym shorts or pjs. • Will the moving crew wrap and protect your furniture to prevent damages? How many movers

will be on the job? How long will the job take? Are there enough hours in the day? Will you be charged if there is overtime? By law, a moving company can only give you rates, not estimates, over the phone. Does the moving company provide free on-site estimates? • Are they active in the community? If they care about the community, chances are they will care about you and your move. They want to continue doing business in your town a long, long time. • What sort of specialty experience do they have? Are they familiar with high rises and elevators? Additional men and equipment can mean surprising extra costs. • Ask the movers to measure your doorways, stairways, elevators etc. and take pictures of them before the move so you can’t be blamed for any damage. • Finally, let the moving estimator ask YOU questions. If he/she hasn’t asked a single question, yet is ready to give an estimate, turn and run.
