Riding the Thunder Mountain Line Attend a murder mystery dinner, try your hand at sifting for mineral treasures, ride the rails then raft the whitewater, or sit back and enjoy the scenery. Horseshoe Bend's Thunder Mountain Line offers something for everyone.
O
ver a century ago, there was "gold in them thar hills," and soon the existing roads were not able to handle the incoming freight required to mine the precious metal. Prospectors arrived in droves as gold fever spread quickly and fervently. Railroad tycoons battled for control, and the Idaho Northern was incorporated by Colonel W. Dewey on December 18, 1897. Seventeen years later, the Thunder Mountain Line was completed, and regular service from Nampa to McCall began. Today, riders enjoy a multitude of adventures from raft and rail packages and Wild West shows to murder mystery dinner rides and holiday-specific events. In addition, the Thunder Mountain Line offers group rates for birthday parties, corporate events, and even weddings.
Trips are both fun and educational for all ages. Three classes of service on the trains allow for all budgets. Raptors and Rails By partnering with the Peregrin Fund World Center for Birds of Prey, the Thunder Mountain Line features a scenic trip from Horseshoe Bend along the Payette River to Banks, where riders will get to meet two birds and learn about their habitat, hunting, and nesting areas. The round trip will take approximately three hours.

Payette River Flyer Designed as a scenic ride and shuttle service for rafters and kayakers, the Payette River Flyer celebrates its second season, running on Saturdays and Sundays. Rafters and kayakers can load their gear on the train in Smith's Ferry for a one-way trip just south of the Carbarton, a stretch of the North Fork of the Payette River that travels through dense forest with abundant wildlife. And if you don't raft, sit back, relax, and enjoy the remote and less-traveled route. Wipe Out #DiaperNeed Idaho's New Diaper Bank
Since opening its doors in September, 2014, Idaho Diaper Bank has distributed more than 100,000 diapers to Treasure Valley families in need.
W
hen the Idaho Diaper Bank's Executive Director Shawna Walz had her first son, she learned just how much money it takes to raise a baby. "I was overwhelmed with joy," she said, "but when I realized just how many resources are needed and that many families struggle to provide for their babies, I decided I needed to help, and that's how Idaho Diaper Bank came to be."
even from programs designed to help low income families like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, commonly known as Food Stamps), or through the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program.
The harsh reality is that one in every three Idaho families struggle to afford the basics, including diapers, which are often ignored when money is tight and every dollar is needed to go toward food and shelter.
"The ability to diaper a child should not be dependent on a family's financial resources," said Walz. "We need to be a voice for the babies. We need to raise awareness about the need for dry, clean diapers. And that's exactly what Idaho Diaper Bank does.
In fact, in Idaho alone, 55%, or roughly 35,000 children under the age of three, live in poverty or come from low-income families. There is no assistance for diapers,
On average, babies need 10 diapers each day, which can quickly add up to over $100 per month. Many Idaho babies are being left in wet diapers all day, which can cause illness like hepatitis A, viral meningitis and severe bacterial diarrhea.
Idaho Diaper Bank was established to provide diapers, diapering supplies and advocacy to families in need through partnership agencies. The agencies who serve infants and families include childcare centers, crisis nurseries,

domestic violence shelters, food pantries and faith-based organizations. Idaho Diaper Bank seeks to engage Idaho communities to recognize that diapers are a basic need, along with food and shelter. Idaho is the 49th state to start a diaper bank and has begun by serving families in the Treasure Valley with plans to expand statewide. Since its doors opened in September, 2014, the bank has distributed more than 100,000 diapers through its partners including churches, infant programs and homeless shelters. Diapers are not dispensed at the organization's Meridian warehouse. Idaho Diaper Bank accepts donations of new, clean, disposable and cloth diapers. cbboise.com
Money is also accepted and can be stretched even further thanks to partnerships with diaper manufacturers and the National Diaper Bank Network. While most diaper needs are focused on babies, the bank
also accepts diaper donations for elderly adults and those with disabilites. To learn more, or to get assistance, call the Idaho Help Line at 211, or visit the diaper bank's website at IdahoDiaperBank.org.

Leave Your Pooch at Home
Despite how much we like to take our furry friends with us—and how much they like to go along—summer is not the time. Dogs have a year 'round fur coat and don't sweat like we do, so they can't get cool. Avoid a catastrophe, as well as a heartbreak, and leave your pal at home with plenty of fresh water and a cool place to relax.
