Up Your Curb Appeal!

Make Your Front Porch Shine

W

hat better time than spring to freshen up your home’s front porch? It’s easy to make a few changes to welcome the season. Clean out debris with a power washer. The first step is cleaning out the debris from winter. You could use old-fashioned equipment like a broom, mop, washcloth and elbow grease or hire a professional

pressure washing service to clean away stubborn debris so your porch looks like new. Dirt and grime in the floor and on the siding can be dusted off quickly by a pressure washer, which will save you time and effort otherwise spent hand washing your porch. Add a new coat of paint. A new coat of paint is a great way to revitalize the front porch, whether it’s touching up the trim, railings

and banisters, or repainting the front door. It is also an opportunity to add a bright new color as part of your front porch design. Painting is a good DIY project on the weekend, or if you intend to do a complete overhaul, you might need to get a painter to help. Make sure the color will complement the rest of the house. You could always paint the porch a neutral tone and then cover the door in a bright color so it stands out.

Get your home ready for warmer weather and outdoor living with these handy tips.

Revitalize the front door. Once you start getting the porch fixed up, it’s time to turn your focus to the door. Start by cleaning off any dirt and grime with the power washer or with a washcloth covered in vinegar and water. Then you can add on decorations like wreaths, a new door knob made of brass or steel, window dressings and more. That way it will look brand new without having to install a new door for hundreds of dollars.

potted plants with seasonal flowers. They are inexpensive, add a splash of color and can be either standing or hanging in baskets throughout your porch. They will also help to create a welcoming atmosphere on the front porch. You should coordinate the colors of the plants to match the front door or the landscape so they stand out against the porch and blend with the yard.

Brighten the porch with fixtures and new decor. Imbue the porch with the natural If the house numbers and mailbox landscape. are showing signs of age, you To make your porch blend in with might need to spend a few hours the landscape, consider adding or hire a handyman to revitalize cbboise.com

them. You should also install light fixtures to make those house numbers easy to see at night or on rainy days. Light fixtures are also good for illuminating front porch decor like chairs, rockers, swings, dining chairs and tables. Proper lighting will give the porch a warm feel at all hours. ~ Lindsay Listanski / Andrea Davis Coldwell Banker Blue Matter

Sprucing Up

Easy Home Improvement Amy Freeman Coldwell Banker Blue Matter

While you might be itching to get outside this spring, how about tackling some easy indoor projects while the weather is still unpredictable?

P

eople don’t often think of this time of year as the best time for home improvement projects, but early spring can be ideal for a number of tasks. Whether you’re looking for a small change or something larger, here are some home improvement projects worth trying before you get busy outdoors. Get New Lighting The days are still a bit short, and there is less sunlight overall, so you might notice that your rooms are slightly dim or that there are strange shadows cast on the walls or furniture. If so, investing in new lighting might be just what you need. There are few basic lighting rules to keep in mind when picking out a new lamp or two. • If you’re replacing the light by your bathroom mirror, choose two lamps to put on either side of the mirror or a long, horizontal lamp for above the mirror. Placing a single bulb directly above your

mirror will cast shadows on your face, making you wish you didn’t have a light at all. • For end tables, experts suggest the right-height lamp should be at the level of your shoulder when you sit in a chair next to it. • For a chandelier or fixture over a dining room table, choose one that is a foot in diameter smaller than the width of your table. If you don’t have the budget to invest in new lighting fixtures for your home right now, a walletfriendly fix is to invest in more energy efficient bulbs. Whether you pick compact fluorescent bulbs or LEDs, you’ll see a reduction in the amount of energy your home uses when you swap out your incandescent bulbs. Plus, CFLs and LEDs have much longer lives than the traditional bulb, so you don’t have to worry about replacing them as often. Add a New Coat of Paint Painting a room in cooler weather might seem like a bad idea, but

why not get it over with before it’s nice and you want to be outside? If you’re worried about ventilation, crack a window in the room you’re working in, and be sure to pick a paint that is low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and plug in a fan to get the air circulating. Clear Stuff Out When you spend a lot of time indoors, it can start to feel a little claustrophobic. One way to give yourself more space is to start clearing out the items you don’t use. Go through your home room by room, looking for items you haven’t used in a while or that you don’t like. Box them up to be donated, sold, or thrown away, depending on their condition. While cooler temperatures might make you want to curl up with a good book, overcome the urge to lounge and get moving on some improvements that will make you proud!
