2020
Q1
QUARTERLY REPORT
FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO April 1, 2020 The start of 2020 has been a humbling reminder of why our organization exists. The sweeping pandemic of COVID-19 has disrupted virtually everything in both our personal and professional lives. This disruption has immense impacts on our organizations and economy. One of the many factors that will affect our community’s future is our ability to deal with the unforeseen. As changes to industry, transportation, talent, workforce and population occur, how will we evolve with the world around us? As issues emerge, how will we work together to address them? I am encouraged and inspired by the coming together of so many during this difficult time — the Columbus Way is at work across our community. While there will be many obstacles to overcome in the coming months, it is this culture of community stewardship and collaboration that will be the driving force as we work on recovery. During this time, it is also important to stay positive and celebrate the wins we share. As you look through the pages of this report, I hope you are proud and inspired by the many things we have accomplished so far in 2020.
Alex R. Fischer President and CEO

Our new member orientation was an excellent opportunity to gather with a small group to discuss the Partnership’s program of work and the ways we collectively engage to advance Columbus. An in-depth discussion with the Partnership team was followed by dinner with members of the Partnership’s executive committee.

PUBLIC POLICY COVID-19 RESPONSE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
STATE OF OHIO
LOCAL GOVERNMENT
The Partnership has had constant connectivity with Senator Brown, Senator Portman and our congressional delegation to discuss regional and state priorities in the COVID-19 stimulus legislation. We continue to advocate for policies that will provide essential economic relief to communities and workers across the country.
Alex Fischer is serving on the Governor’s economic strike force committee to work on COVID-19 recovery. The Partnership has also worked with the Ohio Legislature to ensure that a comprehensive relief package was signed into law to protect Ohio families.
We are working with the Mayor, City Councilmembers and County Commissioners to ensure that our business community is active in the Region’s response to COVID-19.
POLICY INITIATIVES TRANSPORTATION & INFRASTRUCTURE We are encouraging the United States Department of Transportation to invest in the completion of Phase 4 of the Columbus Crossroads project, which is a $1.3 billion, multi-phase project to transform the crossroads of Interstates 70 and 71 in Downtown Columbus. This will improve freight movement across Ohio and the Midwest and reconnect neighborhoods that have been negatively impacted by the construction of the federal highway system.

ELECTED OFFICIALS FIRST QUARTER EVENTS In February, Partnership companies gathered in support of Congresswoman Joyce Beatty at her business community event. Since 2013, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty has represented Ohio’s Third Congressional District. She currently serves on the House Committee on Financial Services and is a member of the Housing and Insurance and Oversight and Investigations subcommittees. She has also been a steadfast leader in the Congressional Black Caucus.
We honored Congressman Troy Balderson in February at a business community reception at the Columbus Club. His work on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, and his position as ranking member on the House Small Business Committee are important to our community’s federal policy priorities.
We gathered with U.S. Senator Rob Portman at Wolf’s Ridge in February to discuss the importance of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and his work combatting the opioid crisis. Senator Portman’s work has included a focus on the USMCA, commitment to legislation regarding the opioid epidemic and leadership to combat human trafficking.
In January, White Castle hosted Speaker Larry Householder and the House Republican Caucus. Speaker Householder has been a leader in the State of Ohio for over 20 years. In his second consecutive term as Speaker, he is focusing on issues related to addiction and mental illness, addressing Ohio’s infrastructure needs and workforce development opportunities.

PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS UNDERWAY LOCAL GOVERNMENTS The Partnership is partnering with the City of Columbus and Franklin County on numerous initiatives, including: • • • •
Creation of affordable and workforce housing for the Region. Support of Franklin County’s Rise Columbus to reduce poverty, and Mayor Ginther’s CelebrateOne to reduce infant mortality. Serving on the Northwest Corridor Executive Committee to best determine how to move large numbers of people quickly, efficiently and safely through one of the city’s fastest growing employment centers, which includes downtown, The Ohio State University, OhioHealth and Grandview Yard. Work with local officials to improve plan reviews to allow for more expedient projects, cost savings and a more welcoming development climate.
MOVE TO PROSPER
/ 12
The Columbus Foundation hosted a briefing on Move to PROSPER. Launched by The Ohio State University’s City & Regional Planning program and community partners, Move to PROSPER works to make affordable rental housing available in neighborhoods that offer access to opportunities, such as good schools, safe neighborhoods, employment, and other indicators of prosperity.
COLUMBUS DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION Work on the Scioto Peninsula made progress this quarter as plans for phase one are close to being finalized. The first phase of the project is scheduled for a fall groundbreaking, and upon completion will include 240,000 square feet of office space, 550 residential units and a 180-key hotel. Development partners include Rockbridge, Daimler and Flaherty & Collins. CDDC has begun planning its first downtown affordable housing project. Initial plans are being finalized, but funding and partners have been secured to begin design work on 161 units of affordable housing.
THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY The Ohio State University is redeveloping its West Campus with a mixture of facilities for research and innovation, new interdisciplinary facilities, a new ambulatory and proton facility, 1,000 residential units, an enhanced SciTech Corridor, and 400,000 square feet of office space with ground floor retail. The Partnership is assisting The Ohio State University in securing partners and funding for this transformational opportunity.

SMART CITY INITIATIVES PROJECTS UNDERWAY GET READY TO PIVOT Pivot, the USDOT-funded multi-modal trip planning app, will launch its first integrations with the common payment system the first week of May, pending the impacts of COVID-19. The first mobility provider integrations with payment will be with COTA and Yellow Cab; as contracts with additional mobility providers get signed, more payment options will become available. As the City of Columbus State of Emergency is eased and community travel patterns resume, Smart Columbus will begin marketing the app in partnership with COTA. Additionally, six Smart Mobility Hubs will open to passenger to better connect residents to Columbus mobility options.
PRIVATE SECTOR IGNITES PROGRESS The Acceleration Partner program has enlisted 70 of Central Ohio’s largest employers to empower employees to drive electric and drive less. These employers have collectively installed electric vehicle charging at 63 employment sites and introduced 31 new mobility benefit programs, providing tens of thousands of residents with unprecedented access to shared and sustainable transportation options. Participating companies are now sharing their learnings to help scale and inform new programs that promote mode shift and access to mobility.

CLEAN ENERGY Over the past year, Smart Columbus engaged industry experts and energy buyers on how they procure renewable energy. The team found that simple, cost effective solutions were needed, but were not being supplied to our market. Smart Columbus created a clean energy task force with representation from Huntington, Cardinal Health, CoverMyMeds, Green Energy Ohio, Bricker & Eckler, and the Ohio Farm Bureau to determine how Smart Columbus could offer a solution. The task force determined that electricity aggregation would be win-win solution Smart Columbus could provide. After months of development with the task force and local stakeholders, Smart Columbus established Smart Columbus Energy (SCE) to increase renewable energy consumption in the Region. The program offers a simple, cost-effective solution for corporate renewable energy procurement, helping companies meet increasingly important ESG goals. AEP Energy is supplying the power to SCE, through new wind and solar assets in Ohio.
