Sedona
from View - Arizona
Bliss Among the Red Rocks
It is often said that the beauty of Sedona changes dramatically with the movement of the sun – so too does the personality of this one-of-a-kind town. Located in northern Arizona just south of Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona spans Yavapai and Coconino counties, and is known for its gorgeous red rock and breathtaking vistas.
In the early morning, the spectacular colors of the bluffs inspire tranquility and meditation, then the diverse arts scene starts to come alive. Late afternoon presents innumerable opportunities for settling in at local restaurants for superb dining, live music and incomparable views. As the sun sets, the shifting light creates a nature portrait like no other, to the delight of hikers, photographers and the fortunate residents who get to experience this ever-evolving tapestry every day.
The spirituality of the place is undeniable and is a heavy influence on the eclectic atmosphere. This vibe is reflected in the number of galleries and shops offering lovely works by sculptors, jewelers, wood carvers and weavers, all clearly affected by their surroundings. Such tempting merchandise can be found in clusters, most notably in the popular Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, touted as the “Art and Soul of Sedona.” Each month, 1st Friday in the Galleries also provides ample opportunity to browse and enjoy these wares, as does the famed Sedona Arts Festival that takes place in October and has charmed art lovers for nearly 30 years.
Some of the city’s oldest neighborhoods lie in Uptown, which is actually Sedona’s downtown area, and boast not only fabulous views but convenience to the popular shops and unique galleries. Private homes can also be found sprinkled throughout Oak Creek Canyon and in a wide variety of West Sedona neighborhoods, which enjoy easy access to the service organizations and amenities that locals require, such as banks, grocery stores, medical facilities and schools.
Sedona’s arts and tourism-based economy means that residents are able to enjoy a small-town lifestyle with the many benefits that visitors come from all over the world to experience – whether the vigor of hiking, biking and golf, or the serenity of yoga and painting are more their speed. The otherworldliness of the place can’t help but spill over into everyday life, setting a friendly, neighborly tone at even the simplest of local events, planned activities and regular gatherings like the vibrant farmers markets.

LAKE HAVASU
Blue Jewel of the Desert
In the instance of Lake Havasu City, it’s all in the name – the main attraction is the lovely lake around which activities and leisure in the community revolve. The beaches that hug the shores are famous for being a virtual oasis in the desert, with opportunities for swimming in the clear water and boating on the tranquil waves.
Located in Mohave County, Lake Havasu City was once just part of the rugged bank along the Colorado River. In the 1930s, the construction of the Parker Dam led to the creation of what now serves as a mecca for those who love the outdoors and make the most of using it as a playground. “Havasu” is the Mohave word for “blue water,” and while the lake is undoubtedly the star of the show here, the surrounding area also offers miles of picturesque trails, a variety of interesting wildlife and red rock vistas that all harmonize to create a true symphony of nature.
Once Lake Havasu City was established in September 1963, a vigorous marketing push brought prospective buyers to town, offering remarkable scenery and a tempting refuge from cold climates. The city wasn’t formally incorporated until 1978, and decades of steady growth followed, with a population of over 56,000 by 2020.
You may have heard the tale that the London Bridge was moved to Arizona. Well, the story is true and it can be found in none other than Lake Havasu City, gracefully spanning Bridgewater Channel. It was carefully reconstructed after an elaborate relocation process from overseas and was officially dedicated in a well-attended 1971 ceremony. Today, it is a celebrated attraction among those who choose to traverse this unusual piece of history on foot, as well as boaters who anchor in the shadow of the iconic bridge.
Aside from the obvious draw of its striking landscape and colorful history, a full calendar of events – including boat racing competitions, classic car shows and a popular balloon festival – provide even more opportunities for fun and excitement in Lake Havasu City all year long.
