omes up to 100K square feet are not unusual anymore. My firm, KNA Design, completed the interiors for “Liongate,” a 40K sq. ft. Bel-Air estate which just sold for a record $45 million. Contemplating building or renovating a mansion? In our experience, the following tips guarantee success. First, the team: architect, interior designer, landscape designer, and contractor. Select well as you’ll be together for 2+ years; ensure all are trustworthy. Second, a consistent design vision. If you envision Mediterranean while your spouse fantasizes about a French chateau, there’s trouble brewing! Expectations must be managed. Third, quality throughout! This is a long term investment, especially at this price point. Fourth, the smallest parts: a baseboard, a door handle, a plumbing fixture, or even a light switch are critical. We love to tell our clients, “We’ve seen the movie and we know how it ends!” Finally, communication: it’s critical that only a few are empowered to make decisions. Control then remains in the hands of those writing the checks. Experience has taught us that creativity isn’t just an aesthetic, it’s a way of doing business.
