I

n order to feel secure, homeowners today request security systems which go well beyond standard burglar alarms. At the beginning of new construction or a major remodel, my #1 recommendation is to install a “safe room.” These rooms offer a secure place to hide in the case of an intruder, a refuge during and after a disaster, or a place to store valuables. Home security is actually part of mankind’s DNA: safe rooms date back to the Middle Ages when the elite would hide, alongside valuables, in fortified rooms deep within their castles during a siege. Wherever a safe room is located (closet, bathroom, a secret bookcase), the vital component is the door. It’s generally the weakest link and the most likely point of attack. A bullet resistant, steel sliding pocket door offers an ultimate level of protection as it’s hidden from view, yet remains quickly accessible and provides maximum entry resistance. Also, items are less likely to get caught in the door (as opposed to a hinged door) when entering during an emergency. The door needs a minimum of two electromagnetic locks with coded keypads operational 24/7. It’s also wise to reinforce the surrounding floor, ceiling and walls.
