A
huge draw for Southern California residents, and those planning to move here, is the inherent connection to the outdoors. This Malibu residence for world-renowned pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp, and his wife Nina Montee Karp, is perfectly poised to take full advantage of stirring ocean views to the west, and meditative vistas of the Santa Monica Mountains to the north. The primary request for their new home was to accommodate an expansive art collection featuring an array of contemporary California artists. Therefore, the architectural program embraced a minimal interior, reminiscent of an art gallery. The experiential quality of an environment is essential--how one actually “feels” in a space is paramount. By maximizing the use of natural light, creating functional spaces, utilizing sensual materials, and “framing” outside views, a heightened experience tailored to my client’s needs and desires manifested immediately. The number one goal of my practice is to design projects which combine impeccable aesthetics, quality materials, and superior craftsmanship. The works often have an “edge,” utilizing the latest technologies and fabrication methods, along with interiors which are always comfortable, detail-oriented, lush, and seductive.
