H
ome transformations accomplished with subtle updates are immensely satisfying. For this modern Trousdale Estates gem, originally designed in 1963 by architect Robert Earl, I utilized design strategies which apply universally, especially with hillside homes. First, I approached this as a historic restoration in order to respect the original design vision. Older homes don’t need to be replaced! Bring them back to life with new materials and finishes. Second, utilize steel frames strategically hidden within walls to “open rooms up” and take advantage of spectacular views. New panoramic Fleetwood custom glass doors and windows replaced solid walls of yesteryear. Third, luxury homes in the 1960s often had 40-foot swimming pools which swallowed-up entire yards. By reducing the pool’s width from 20 feet to 12 feet, valuable green space increased which made the yard visibly larger. Fourth, gut the kitchen and make it the focal point of the house. Adding stainless steel appliances and white finishes, without being be too trendy, works beautifully. Finally, enhance curb appeal by replacing old light fixtures, add a new contemporary driveway gate, and refresh the landscape. The results? A rewarding remodel of a mid-century masterpiece in record time!
