A
rriving in California from Wisconsin was a most pleasant culture shock. Most likely, I was a typical Midwesterner who had little realization of the impact early Spanish explorers and settlers had on the California which survives to this day. Not simply street names and old missions, but an all-consuming flavor of red tiled roofs, olive groves, and crisp white structures tucked behind thick walls draped in bougainvillea. It was a step into a cultural past which was foreign to me. Yet, it had tantalized me from afar through old western films like “One Eyed Jacks” and by production sets for my masked hero “Zorro,” a favorite boyhood TV show. It’s no wonder, with a new aesthetic awareness, that my early design projects in Los Angeles, including my own home, were simple, Spanish Rancho inspired haciendas with adobe-like walls, tiled roofs, and walled courtyards. Like Cliff May and John Byers before me, I was captured by the romance of indoor/outdoor living and the Spanish style architecture which best supported it. Over time I was fortunate to design a residential Spanish Colonial compound, complete with a personal chapel. It’s a highlight of my design work, and a pleasure to see the patina develop complemented by its magnificent Westside backdrop.
