eyond architecture and the requisite open kitchen, there is one new home feature that trumps all others in Los Angeles: the view. It’s not exactly a secret. Every high-end residential developer in town knows that the way to an affluent Angeleno’s heart is through a jawdropping panorama sweeping across the city skyline. Developer Jay Belson seeks it out for all of his properties. “It really comes down to geography,” he reveals one afternoon at his eponymous company’s latest creation in Hollywood Hills on St. Ives Drive. “We always try to choose the best locations in the city. And when you combine that with stunning architectural design, using the very best materials in every square inch of the house and executing the best workmanship at the highest level, it is a turnkey opportunity that is very hard to resist for a sophisticated buyer.” When Belson purchased the 9,251-square-foot site on St. Ives in 2013, he recognized the potential. He had originally purchased the house for a light remodel, but the more he visited the site, the more he realized that he “had one of the best views in Los Angeles,” he says. “It became obvious that the best use of the property was to go all the way with it.” Going all the way meant capitalizing on the “explosive,” unobstructed 270-degree views of downtown, Century City and westward to the ocean with a design by renowned architects Shubin + Donaldson and sleek interiors by Michael Palumbo. He spent two years crafting the masterpiece property, and it shows. t’s been said that great design is as much about the way a space feels as how it looks, and for designers like Cliff Fong, that idea is paramount. With interiors for Hollywood royalty such as “American Horror Story” co-creator Ryan Murphy, James Franco, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, plus commercial designs for Michael Voltaggio’s Ink restaurant, Fong has become a celebrity go-to, even being named one of The Hollywood Reporter’s “25 Most Influential Designers in Los Angeles.”

Fong’s juxtaposition of 20th-century design elements with antiques, seamlessly blending rare flea market finds, historically accurate furniture, contemporary art, photography and film-set-worthy objects, is one of the style maven’s signatures. The New York-born former fashion buyer and stylist has embraced the casual L.A. lifestyle while sheathing it in vintage sophistication. The resulting spaces are highly personal, with ego and pretension gracefully checked at the door.

or more formal? How does the client live? What would he or she wear for any of those occasions? What should the room wear for those occasions? Can you recall a time when a celebrity client asked you to track down an unusual antique? What was it?

In between designing celebrity homes and high-profile commercial projects and readying his own new bedding line, Ville Noire, Fong talked to us about everything from art and fashion to movies.

Yes, it was a Jean Prouvé chair, and it was quite rare. This was before 1stdibs. Because I had spent a good chunk of my early years in Paris, I was connected to dealers there. I called the right person and found the chair. We got it delivered in a week. I did not see another one of those chairs until Art Basel, and it was exponentially more expensive — about $170,000 more. When you’re dealing with esoteric things that have investment potential, it’s helpful to know which galleries and art advisors to call — in case you need them.

When it comes to your curatorial process, what’s your motto?

What have been some of your most memorable celebrity rooms?

I don’t think I have a motto. I try not to repeat myself. I think that if you ever get too comfortable with a certain kind of verbiage, it prevents you from growing as a designer. For me, it’s different every time. It’s not that I always want to create something that someone can look at and go, “Oh, I did that.” It’s more important to find an aesthetic that is unique to my client. I’m not the kind of designer who wants to create just carpets and curtains match. I look for the unexpected — the irony in a room. When I’m curating, I look for common threads that might not be associated with each other. Perhaps it’s different regions or different time periods. Perhaps it’s combining something that exists in nature with something that is industrial. I start with something central and build around it. If I can do that successfully, then I’ve created something special for someone.

There are no rooms that particularly stick out. Ryan Murphy and Ellen are both design enthusiasts and collectors with different inspirations at different times. There are some rooms we have reinterpreted several times over the course of ownership. With Ellen, I have redone one room three or four times. For Ryan, we have reconceived his house a few times, and we’re doing it again now. It’s fun to change a room based on your mood. The 1958 movie “Auntie Mame” is a classic example — she redecorates her home six times to represent new phases of her life. When the movie opens, there is a lot of chinoiserie. In another phase, there is a lot of English Colonial revival. That, to me, is one of the greatest pleasures of interior design — to reinterpret a room based on mood.

“I don’t want anything to be too precious,” he explains. “It’s important to be able to live and breathe and entertain.”

Is that difficult for you — to change a room you worked so hard on?

From what do you typically draw inspiration? Mostly, I get inspired by two of the things I love the most: nature and art. How has your background in fashion informed your interior design aesthetic today? I think the process of building a room is sort of like getting dressed in the morning. You decide who you want to be that day. You might feel like a cashmere sweater with a long skirt. Some days, you feel like putting on a suit. Some days, it’s T-shirt and jeans. When I look at how to dress a room, I ask a lot of questions. Is the client more casual

In general, I don’t get emotionally attached to a house or a room. I might enjoy how that room looks, but I’m willing to change it. To me, it’s like changing your outfit from day to day. When you were working on Ryan Murphy’s historic Spanish Colonial, which was restored by Diane Keaton, were you worried about finding the right balance between modern and being respectful of the home’s original character? I wasn’t worried. I am always trying to design within the soul of the house, which might sound cliché. If I’m not

doing that, then it’s just set decorating — like drag. It’s not clever. It’s not personal or unique. The rooms in Ryan’s house seem very carefully edited. So, even though you are using antiques and traditional furnishings, there is a minimalism — almost a Scandinavian sparseness — to the rooms. Was that the goal? A lot of that relates to the personality of the client. I do like minimal, but I also love maximal. For example, it’s fun to pack a wall with portraits. One thing I’m careful about, however, is making sure that the personality of pieces can be appreciated. Sometimes, when you have too many special pieces in a room, you don’t know what to focus on. It’s like having too many celebrities in the room. Everyone is fighting for attention. What do you like best about designing in Hollywood? Because Los Angeles is a growing and fertile design community, the clients tend to be younger, more inexperienced and more open to ideas. The fashion is loose, and the way we live is loose. It’s easier to etch out a place for oneself here. Here, I get to do a lot of interesting things with design. Do you enjoy initiating your younger clients into the world of art and design? Yes, although I can’t say it’s a college-level course! I’m not the kind of designer who has my own creative agenda. I’ve been around quite a few young people who have always liked Andy Warhol but have never known that they can own a piece of his work. Maybe it’s not an “A” piece, but it is still a Warhol. I enjoy showing them where the art could work in their space. I always ask my clients, “How can we do this at a speed and within a budget that you’re comfortable with?” I don’t mind a small project, say, for a young actor or a small family. It’s nice to be able to do that, and I can do that because I’ve had clients — like those in the financial sector — with much larger budgets. I like the low and high. You’re like an actor who films a blockbuster every few years in order to pay for his or her passion projects, e.g., the low-paying art films. Except they’re still getting paid more than I am! orsche feels the need — the need for speed. And luxury and performance and innovation — sentiments that are clearly shared by auto aficionados. This year has seen record sales months, revenue and delivery growth, and a slew of accolades (ranking at the top of J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study for the third consecutive year and its Appeal Study for the 11th consecutive year). But it’s what Porsche is working on next (hint: you plug it in!) that’s making luxury car buyers even more excited. As Porsche continues to refine its premium offerings and conceptualize groundbreaking new vehicles like the electric Mission E, we’re taking a look at what continues to propel them forward, with a nod to the milestones and practices of 60-plus years in the driver’s seat.

Then: Porsche’s first vehicle, the 356, was built in 1948 in a small garage in Austria — by hand. The same care and attention to detail were applied to its next car, the 911; by the time it was introduced to the world in 1963, Porsche was already earning a reputation for highperformance luxury. This first iteration of the car that today is one of the most desired and admired automobiles around the world sported a 2.0-liter, 130-horsepower six-cylinder engine and the sleek shape that remains its hallmark.

Then: Porsche established itself as an industry leader in luxury performance automobiles early on, with total production exceeding 300,000 in 1977, the one-millionth Porsche built in 1996, and sales for Porsche Cars North America reaching more than 47,000 in 2014.

Now: Porsche has continued to revolutionize its niche during the last six decades while expanding its core product line to include a full range of premium sports cars and sports utility vehicles, as well as adapting to changing technologies and changing needs. Case in point: the venerable 911. “When the original 911 Turbo was introduced in 1974, it elevated the performance of the 911 range to new heights and was also the first turbocharged vehicle in the United States to receive an emissions certificate from the EPA,” says Cristina Cheever, manager, lifestyle and brand public relations for Porsche Cars North America. “The latest generation of 911 Carrera models with new turbocharged engines continues in this tradition, offering increased efficiency and significantly more torque than its predecessors.”

Now: The Porsche mystique continues to grow; the Porsche 918 Spyder was named the Robb Report Car of the Year for 2015, and the Mission E is the most whispered-about concept car in the industry. “Porsche has very specific criteria for its vehicles. A driver should be able to extract the full potential of the car throughout a 300-mile drive without losing performance. This is not possible with current technology but will be with the drive train found in the Mission E,” says Cheever. “The Mission E concept uses a unique 800-volt power train that offers several advantages. The output of 600 horsepower and the corresponding acceleration are available consistently for a range of over 300 miles without the car’s losing performance — even with spirited driving. Secondly, 80% of the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery capacity can be recharged in as little as 15 minutes. Additionally, the Mission E concept offers true Porsche driving dynamics, with an expected Nürburgring lap time of less than eight minutes.”

Product Innovation Then: Forward motion has literally and figuratively shaped the progress of Porsche. The first car sold in the United States featured both driver’s side and passenger airbags as standard equipment: the Porsche 944. A move into family-friendly cars with the Cayenne Sport Utility Vehicle in 2003 and the Panamera in 2009 extended the reach of the brand, while a focus on alternative fuel sources yielded the first hybrid car, the 2011 Cayenne S Hybrid. Now: The introduction of the smaller Macan SUV this year helped Porsche to its best-ever sales month in the United States in May 2015. Porsche reports that the Macan isn’t just impacting the established Porsche owner market but also has converted car buyers to the brand for the first time, with three out of four buyers worldwide purchasing their first Porsche. A further move into alternative fuel has also been a priority; for 2014, Porsche was the only brand in the world with three premium plug-in models: the 918 Spyder, Cayenne S E-Hybrid and the Panamera S E-Hybrid. Next step: an all-electric premium vehicle, known as Mission E, which builds on the technology of the 918 Spyder. “The 918 Spyder, which is powered by electric motors in addition to a naturally aspirated V-8 engine, has proven that electric technology is not just beneficial to a sports car’s efficiency, but also its performance,” says Cheever. “Improving both of these aspects has always been the core of Porsche’s engineering competence.”

Both are game changers in their cities: Hadid with his record-breaking spec mansions and Schrager with his chic boutique hotel concepts that always seem to find their edge. While both entrepreneurs operate in very different spheres, they are not all that far apart when it comes to having a flair for reinvention. “We build fantasies,” says Hadid of his namesake development firm. “And we are always reinventing that fantasy for a new generation of wealth in Los Angeles.”

His latest creation, a 30,000-square-foot contemporary sculptural-style mansion in Bel Air, is awaiting completion. The home features curved concrete, marble and glass walls, views spanning to the ocean and an IMAX movie theater — “the largest ever installed in a home,” he says.

OUR VIEW: Those fantasies — a $72 million mansion in Bel Air, which set a national sales record in 2010, and a $58 million palace next to the famed Beverly Hills Hotel in 2013 — have a habit of capturing headlines just by their sheer size and price point. Last year, Palazzo di Amore — a 35,000-square-foot Mediterraneanstyle villa he finished developing with real estate investor Jeff Greene — set another record when it first hit the market for $195 million, the most expensive residential listing in the country at the time. (The residence has recently been reduced to $149 million.) He has also developed many residences for celebrities and A-listers, including an $85 million estate currently on the market
