f you have ever had the fortune of attending Miami’s Art Basel, then you would know that there are no trends. There are no rules. And you can forget about trying to find a common theme from the dizzying tornado of musical performances, art video, 1960s abstract sculpture, neo-expressionist paintings, digital collages and everything else on display in the Miami Convention Center. Trends, rules, themes — they practically run counter to the disruptive nature of the preeminent art festival, which takes place from Dec. 3 to 6, 2015.

Will downtown L.A. ever be a true arts metropolis like Broad and so many other arts patrons seem to want?

Beyond Art Basel, what other shows are coming up?

I

Gallery owner Michael Kohn, whose eponymous Hollywood gallery is marking its 13th year showing at Art Basel, knows first hand. He amusingly calls it “the Burning Man of the art world.” He’ll be exhibiting work from a core group of historical West Coast-based artists, including Bruce Conner, Wallace Berman, Joe Goode and Lita Albuquerque, whom Kohn calls “a beautiful, spiritual and talented” multimedia artist whose star is on the verge of exploding. We recently caught up with the long-time gallery owner to ask him about everything from L.A.’s art boom to curating art for the home. Are you seeing any trends or new art movements right now? What you’re seeing in the industry is a wider and deeper appreciation for art than ever before. The popularity and desire for art has created lots of markets, not just one single market. At the high end, you still have certain big American names, like Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol. But beyond that, you have a “musical chairs” of artists who are at the $1 million mark very easily. You can equate it to real estate, in a way. (Except, of course, you can’t live in a painting like you can live in a house!) When you look back on L.A. real estate 25 years ago, few houses ever reached the $1 million mark. Now, everything is a million dollars. The same is happening with art. Like that Picasso painting, “Women of Algiers (Version ‘O’),” which sold for $179 million earlier this spring. Is that the new benchmark? Yes, for some people, $100 million is like spending a $100 on a new shirt. That’s the magnitude. Some experts said it was the perfect painting for someone who doesn’t know or understand Picasso. Even if the buyer wasn’t a sophisticated art connoisseur, Picasso is still one of the most important artists of our time. He was No. 1 in 1910, and he’s still No. 1 in 2015. I just returned from the Picasso Museum in Paris, and I can’t believe how brilliant, ambitious and tireless this man was. Speaking of museums — are you and your art colleagues at all encouraged by the new museums springing up in downtown L.A., like The Broad? I think it is amazing. Eli Broad gave it as a gift to the city. A lot of people in the art world thought of it in far more cynical terms, myself included. I’ve heard the criticisms that the collection is cookie cutter, or that there’s nothing new or interesting being displayed. These are all general criticisms, but I don’t think they take into account the reality of what it is. As soon as I went to The Broad, I realized how extraordinary it is. I mean, would you rather one Lichtenstein or 20 Lichtensteins? Would you rather

The idea that downtown should be the museum center of L.A. is still up for debate. I think LACMA is still a very strong cultural center and a logical place to have an arts center. And I think West Hollywood would be another logical place to have an art museum — although I’m not saying there are places available! I don’t know exactly what Eli’s vision is for downtown, but it works on Grand Avenue because there are other major arts centers there — like the Walt Disney Concert Hall. It’s a destination.

Yes, that’s what happens. You’re not a true collector until you fill up all of your walls. I’ll tell you, though, it’s completely gratifying to rehang my house with new artwork two to three times a year. It’s what I care about.

We have two art fairs that will run concurrently in March 2016 in New York: the Armory Show and the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) fair. ADAA is a smaller and tailored presentation. Armory is going to include newer artists and older artists, like Ori Gersht, Simmons and Burke, Bruce Conner and Wallace Berman. Are there any new L.A. artists that you are excited about this year? Dean Levin, who is originally from Los Angeles and now lives and works in New York City. He’s an amazing young artist who specializes in post-minimalist painting and sculpture. We’re looking forward to working with him next season. What was the most surprising art show in L.A. that you’ve seen this year? Last year’s Turrell show at LACMA was poignant and beautiful. Who are some of your favorite L.A. artists of all time? Ed Ruscha, for his brilliant blend of language and image and humor. What sort of art can we find in your house? I live in an old 1926 Spanish house in Hancock Park, so you’ll find that I have a wide range of tastes. Everything from a late medieval ivory carving of the Pieta and a 16th century portrait of St. Jerome by Palma Giovane to more contemporary works from Eddie Martinez and Andy Warhol, and a collection of vintage and rare Lionel trains.

What are your rules (if there are any rules) for curating art for the home? My wife and I have a rule that I can buy anything I want… I just can’t hang it anywhere I want! If you can’t hang it, where do you put it? In my gallery.

alibu has long given architects a rich canvas of canyons, hillsides and seaside cliffs upon which to build their masterpieces. For Ed Niles, these natural wonders are more muse than canvas. The Malibu-based modernist architect and nature lover is fond of saying, “Topography is architecture in itself.” It shows in his landmark residences, from the “floating” bridge design of the MacKay house in Las Flores Canyon to the large glass corridor connecting 12 self-standing glass and steel cubes in his own house perched above Pacific Coast Highway. His homes are built to capture light like the different lenses of a camera, often creating cinematic moments through their use of transparency: the sun setting behind the mountains, a gust of wind rustling the trees, a seagull landing on curved glass. These were just the kinds of moments that director-writer-producer Graham Henman and his stylist-turned-guitar-designer wife, Paris, had sought out for their personal home. They had lived in a modestly sized Niles-designed home (nicknamed the “Copper Top Battery” house for its semicircular copper roof) for five years prior to encountering another of his creations: an expansive 16-acre compound nestled in the Malibu hills. “I shot a commercial at the property about three years before we purchased it,” recalls Henman. “The cinematic possibilities within it are astounding. We had dreamed about being able to buy it one day…and as luck would have it, we did eventually.” After 12 years, the Henmans have not been disappointed. Surrounded by manicured lawns and sycamore trees with endless mountain views of Boney Ridge, the steel and glass masterpiece spans approximately 7,000 square feet with plenty of room to pursue their creative endeavors and display their contemporary art collection. (Their tastes range from Pettibon to Warhol and Rauschenberg.)

windows have provided the Henmans with a greater connection to the outdoors. At the same time, the home offers the owner a chance to luxuriate in seclusion, with a separate office/gym with bath and sauna, as well as a detached guest house/studio and a 50-foot helipad for airborne journeys into the urban tumult of Los Angeles. “I can see why Graham would call it ‘cinematic,’” acknowledges Niles. “Like a movie, it’s constantly changing. It’s like being inside a moving picture. Wherever you are in the house, you are aware of the changing art of nature.” Over the years, the Henmans have forged a relationship with Niles, consulting him prior to embarking on any improvements so they made sure to keep the integrity of his design intact. “He’s not only an artistic inspiration, but he’s also been incredibly generous with his time,” says Henman. Their common ground remains their mutual appreciation for nature as art. From fossilized limestone floors to a kitchen that opens to an outdoor entertaining patio and outdoor kitchen, their home represents the ultimate expression of that concept. “My favorite room is the large main room with floor-to-ceiling views to the east and west,” says Henman. “As the light on the mountains changes throughout the day, you are looking at a different painting every minute or so. It’s also been used in lots of film and fashion shoots, so it’s fun to see how different artists interpret it.” Henman and Niles also share mutual appreciation for Malibu and all of the richness of its lands. Both compare the coastal hamlet to living in a threedimensional painting. “Man-made art is fixed in time, whereas my homes, and this one in particular, capture the change of time,” says Niles. “Nature changes. That itself is art.”

“We are a family of slightly insane creatives,” says Henman. “Living in this environment has helped keep us inspired and on our toes, whether it be writing, shooting a film or design.” Panels of glass, which by now have become a Niles calling card, envelope the living room, dining area and kitchen, providing a frame through which to view rock formations on one side, deep canyons on another side and the Pacific Ocean from yet another direction. PICTUREperfect Acclaimed photographer Joe Schmelzer has an eye for beauty—and the art of capturing luxury homes on film.

W

hen Joe Schmelzer talks about his artistic approach, you immediately sense his eye for detail. “I set out to capture what it feels like to actually be in any given space,” reveals the Los Angeles-based editorial and commercial photographer. His images have a natural window-light quality to them, giving the viewer a picture into a still life. It’s why Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Sunset and Travel + Leisure have frequently featured his work. During a photo shoot, Schmelzer offers his view on digital media, his passion and the art of framing a perfect home picture. What compelled you to become a photographer? My interest in images and photography began when I was very young. My father owned an advertising agency in Cleveland, so I grew up in that environment, surrounded by all kinds of photographs, graphic designs and layouts for ads — and I loved it. For my 10th birthday, my present was a Kodak Instamatic camera; I was hooked. By the time I was 13, instead of going off to summer camp, I stayed home and took a summer photo class. That really inspired me. At age 15, I opened my first image and photography studio called Vantage Photography. After I earned my BFA at the Rochester Institute of Technology, I moved to New York City and undertook an apprenticeship with the iconic photographer Mary Ellen Mark, before working with many other noted photographers in the New York image-making scene of the 1990s to gain real-world experience as a photographer. In order to take my career to the next level, I relocated to Los Angeles to attend California Institute of the Arts, where I obtained my MFA. All these experiences compelled me to become a photographer and to learn how to tell stories with images. How did you come to specialize and work in capturing great homes on camera? I started out as a people and portrait photographer, but I was never what you might call a studio photographer; I have always been interested in environments. While working in Los Angeles as a professional photographer after earning my MFA, I met interior designers through my work in portraits, and one of them asked me to photograph an interior design project he was working on in the Hollywood Hills. That experience opened up a fascinating new world for me to explore as an artist and a visual storyteller. It was a natural fit because of my longtime appreciation for art, architecture and design. And it also provided the perfect outlet to exercise my perfectionist tendencies, because shooting a home or space is so detail oriented.

What do you look for? One-of-a-kind details, caliber of design, art and craftsmanship, and the absolutely essential element of light. Has technology changed the way you take photos? After studying photography as a traditionalist and being trained in all the predigital skills of taking, developing and printing photographs, I was in a great place to apply those skills I honed to new methodologies and technologies. Although the tools used by photographers have changed radically since I began my career, the rendering and study of light, composition and storytelling components are classic and unchanging. Regardless of technology, I always strive to perfect the image of the scene within the camera as the cornerstone of my work. I approach the use of the latest technologies as additional tools to be utilized, but they do not determine the end result. How do you infuse your photos with passion? Photography is my passion and means of creative expression. I love what I do, so I think passion is a natural emotion expressed in my photographs. It has been said many times that every person should find out what he or she loves to do and pursue it. That’s how I feel about photography. I love it and have found my calling and career.

How do you capture the spirit of a home in an entirely still-life shot? The things I always keep in mind at the beginning of every shoot are: appreciation of an environment, conveying integrity and respect, and light. I set out to capture what it feels like to actually be in any given space. This is the core of what really matters, not documenting every square foot of a space like a blueprint. Every space is unique, so I try to take a unique approach for each one. Some spaces are built to showcase extraordinary architecture, so in that case the actual design of the building would become the focus. For other spaces that are less distinct and perhaps more traditional, utilizing vignettes that feel alive and inviting, as I would for an editorial layout in a home design magazine, can be very effective in piquing the viewer’s interest. Do you have a method for approaching and framing a space? Each individual space has its own story to tell. So I evaluate every room to find what makes that particular space unique. After sharing ideas with my team, we discuss different options and make creative choices that will work best for that particular space, taking into consideration an agency, client or owner’s needs. What is your most memorable (or favorite) photoshoot? One of the things I like most about my work is I have the privilege of assessing and shooting so many incredible spaces while working with talented people. Every assignment brings a new set of challenges and opportunities to do and try something different. I love that. And I really enjoy visiting the amazing locations and settings that my work takes me to. If I had to pick one among many, it would be fair to say being on assignment in Anguilla was one of my favorite shoots. I have a soft spot for beautiful white-sand beaches and unspoiled tropical islands. What do you think is often missed in home photography? Intimacy, comfort and ease, enjoyment and livability. When approaching photographing a home, we should remember that these are places, spaces and environments where people choose to live and enrich their lives. I

t was the smartest question he ever asked. Architect Whitney Sander had designed a simple 10,000sf (square foot) warehouse in San Francisco. His contractor asked him if he wanted to use a Pre-Engineered Metal Building (PEMB), also known as a Butler Building. “What’s a Butler Building?” Sander asked. And so it began. PEMB’s are pre-fabricated, light-gauge structures that are entirely green, incredibly economical, can span long dimensions, and, be assembled quickly. Since then, Whitney has used dozens of these shells in everything from 2,500sf houses to a 10,000sf state of the art concert hall in Idyllwild (for just $4.2M), to a 260,000sf recycling facility. He calls this method Hybrid Construction, part prefab, all custom™. Perhaps the most significant project to date is a 10,000sf house in Palm Springs, which is that city’s first net-zero residence. Other completed Hybrid projects can be found in Los Angeles, Oregon, and St. Kitts. In design now at Sander’s office is a 300-foot-long residence and barn in Healdsburg, California, plus 10 houses in Sun Valley, Idaho. And, serendipitously, Sander learned recently that he’s related to the original Charles Butler...seems Sander’s great aunt was Butler’s last (and, the family insists, best) wife! www.sander-architects.com
