But there is one tradition that has never lost its luster: the Golden Globes at The Beverly Hilton. Home to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association-bestowed awards since 1961, the landmark hotel has been a constant during awards season — an elegant yet familiar presence that has played witness to more than its fair share of historic Hollywood moments. This weekend, The Beverly Hilton will once again open up its red-carpeted grand circular driveway to one of Hollywood’s most exclusive events. he Mediterranean’s ancient villages certainly have a mythical quality with their pastel-hued palazzos, tucked-away piazzas, dreamy gardens and sweeping blue-water vistas, but Malibu holds its own allure. The town’s rocky cliffs, swaying palms and epic stretches of white sandy beaches have long cast a spell on celebrities, A-listers and even Hollywood filmmakers. It is a place where seclusion and privacy exist in equal measure, where the promise of being worlds away provides the backdrop for all earthly pleasures. Richard Weintraub had a distant time and place in mind when he first came across a largely untouched swath of land just off Pacific Coast Highway. The same family had owned the property for decades, and to Weintraub — president of Weintraub Real Estate Group — it was virgin ground. “It was the closest thing to being in the Mediterranean that I had ever seen,” recalls the longtime Malibu resident, who bought the first 1.7-acre parcel in 1993 and followed it up with additional purchases in 1996 and 1998 to bring the total to nearly 7 acres. “People who come here to this day often comment that they feel totally transported to Greece or Italy.” He is talking about “La Villa Contenta,” his Italianate estate and popular filming location spread across a majestic bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Designed by architect Robert Shachtman, the property is nothing short of cinematic, encompassing a lavishly furnished, 9,000-square-foot main villa, guest house, office building, staff house, European-style natatorium, saline infinity swimming pool, tennis court, outdoor kitchen, greenhouse and some of the most meticulously landscaped grounds in all of Malibu. The three-story main residence includes four bedrooms, eight-and-a-half baths, nine fireplaces, two laundry rooms and an elevator. Priceless furnishings and ancient artifacts, statues and sculptures collected from all over the world blend in two spacious living rooms and a gourmet kitchen, terrace, library, dining room, solarium and loggia. The lower level houses a unique billiards room paneled in English pine and bamboo, wine cellar, furnished screening room, fully equipped gym, powder room and laundry room. The upper level offers three bedroom suites and a master bedroom suite with a terrace for enjoying ocean views and his-and-hers bathrooms. Beyond the main residence, there is an office (which can also be used as a six-bedroom house); a guesthouse with a living room, bedroom and bath; and a staff house with two bedrooms and two baths. The grounds boast priceless specimen trees, rare plantings, an exotic desert garden, a rose garden with over 1,000 rose bushes and an organic fruit and vegetable garden that is bountiful year-round. “The idea was to create a mix of eccentric Renaissance architecture styles from Spanish, Italian and early California, and apply those elements in the best and most appropriate areas of the home,” says Weintraub, a once-staunch traditionalist whose tastes have evolved to include more contemporary stylings in recent years. “Robert is so great to work with — he pays attention to every detail. No corners were cut in the construction or design of this house.” Perhaps there is no greater example of the detail and craftsmanship displayed at La Villa Contenta than in the famous pool pavilion. Completed in 2006 (about eight years after the main residence), the pavilion was designed in the neoclassical style tradition by Tony Duquette Studio — known for stage and film designs — with interiors by Scarlett Abbot. The pair worked closely with Weintraub to create an “underwater baroque fantasy” with over 800,000 seashells lining the interior walls, 20-foot glass ceilings, shell-encrusted chandeliers, a Murano glass tiled lap pool, an onyx fireplace and two changing rooms — one for ladies (“Venus”) and one for gentlemen (“Neptune”). Each is paneled in rare onyx and adorned with lounge areas and steam showers. It took over 100 craftsmen and artisans to realize this whimsical vision. Fans of HBO’s “True Blood” may immediately recognize the interiors as the Vampire Queen’s domicile. To that end, La Villa Contenta has true star power. The estate has been featured in the 2009 film “Funny People” with Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen, as well as “I Love You Man” with Paul Rudd, Jason Segel and Rashida Jones. Brad Pitt also famously shot a Hermès commercial onsite. “Everyone comes here and wants to shoot here,” says Weintraub, who rents it out as a filming location about 16 days a year on average. “The house itself is a celebrity.” For a villa that seems worlds away, it feels delightfully close. he red carpet is not exactly a place for the faint of heart, nor for those who prefer the shadows to the spotlight. But it’s just the sort of platform where some people thrive — like L.A.-based fashion designer Lorena Sarbu. Since 2009, Sarbu’s gowns and dresses have graced the red carpet and have been donned by Emma Stone, Jennifer Lopez, Kate Walsh, Blake Lively, Nicole Ritchie, Taylor Swift, Minnie Driver, Carrie Underwood, Allison Janney and Andie MacDowell. The Romanian-born designer is known for embellished looks that dazzle during awards season. Forget unimaginative black frocks. No — when you wear a Sarbu dress, you are making a statement in texture, in fabric, in color, in silhouette.

dining room, so both rooms connect visually. It’s inviting and lively — a happy place. It’s where I do all of my entertaining. It’s very “me.” Were any rooms in your home inspired by one of your collections? The living room was inspired by the colors in my resort collection — the turquoises and lavenders. The media room — which is red with a dark ceiling and has gold, oversized Asian-inspired knobs — was a nod to my first collection. Where do you seek inspiration?

Now that the 2016 awards season is officially underway, we asked Sarbu about everything from making her gowns stand out at the podium to how she translates her design aesthetic at home.

For me, it’s everywhere. I am frequently inspired by my travels. I’m even inspired by old movies! I love the Grace Kelly period and those classic silhouettes. It’s an internal process, but inspiration happens all the time, as I am living. Creativity never sleeps.

Do you have a muse? What do you love most about creating custom and couture gowns? I design for myself. I design for a woman who has confidence — a woman who wants to stand out at a party. She is elegant, tasteful, timeless.

That’s my favorite thing to do — to create a custom piece. I love the collaborative process. Sometimes I work with a stylist; sometimes I work directly with the client.

What has been your most memorable red carpet moment to date? Can you walk us through the custom design process? The very first one. I wasn’t established at the time when I worked with Iranian actress Shohreh Aghdashloo — who won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress for “House of Saddam” in 2009. It was an ethereal dress in blue Italian silk chiffon. I didn’t think anyone was going to take notice — but they did. If you could give only one piece of red carpet advice, what would it be? I would give this advice to friends or a stylist: dress for your body type. A lot of times, people want to be too trendy, and they forget what fits their body type.

First, I need to understand the event, where she is going and, most importantly, who she is. If I’m working with a stylist, she could be very specific with her requests — e.g., she wants to use a certain color palette, a certain fabric or a certain silhouette. Then, I create a number of designs based on the client’s personality. We select a few designs out of that batch and narrow it down from there. Once the client has selected the design she loves, we start with fabricators in New York and India. Our turnaround time is about four to six weeks. What trends can we expect to see on the red carpet during this year’s award season?

What are your basic design principles? It’s important to match the right dress to the right person. If a gown is overly designed, it can take away from the person. I don’t want people to see the dress first. I want them to see the person first. How has your design aesthetic impacted your style at home? My home is a Tudor home in Beverly Hills. I worked closely with interior designer David Dalton to create a classic look, but with unexpected colors and sparkle inside. Each room has a different theme based on color. For instance, my living room has a lot of blues and turquoises, while the floor is dark-stained and the ceilings are white. It’s a crisp environment, with a sparkly Swarovski chandelier. We pulled crystal embellishments into the adjoining

I expect the sheer trend to once again continue into the upcoming awards season, as well as neutrals and metallics to have a large presence. What can we expect from your red carpet designs this year? I’m going to be sticking to my signatures — sexy, feminine silhouettes paired with delicate embroideries. Are you going to be dressing anyone? I’m looking forward to seeing several of my designs on the red carpet this upcoming awards season, but I won’t be revealing who you can expect to see! You’ll just have to watch.

Fabio Viviani’s guide to creating a delicious awards-viewing party menu. Awards season has officially arrived, and you know what that means — it’s time for the annual rotation of awards-viewing parties. Whether you happen to be a guest for your neighbors’ Golden Globes potluck (Jan. 10) or you’re hosting friends in your media room for the Oscars (Feb. 28), it’s time to do something different with your party menu this year. We turned to “Top Chef” extraordinaire Fabio Viviani for some refreshing ideas on awards-viewing party dishes. If you were hosting an awards-viewing party at home, what would your menu look like? I would have a lot of finger foods — nothing that requires taking your eyes off the TV! Forget big, showy dishes like lasagna. With dishes like that, you need to look down at your plate to make sure you’re not making a mess in your lap. For a simple appetizer, I’d go with a crostini with burrata and prosciutto. If you want something more elaborate, maybe tuna tartare on a piece of cracker. I also like small meatballs on a skewer or maybe a cherry tomato and cheese on a stick. Do you have a simple go-to dish for the dreaded potluck party? You know…something tasty, but easy to transport. For a cold dish, I would bring an al dente pasta salad with meatballs cut in half. For a hot dish, I would bring braised short rib mac and cheese. And for the guest who is always dieting and doing her best to look red-carpet ready? Anything on the lighter side? The key to eating lighter is moderation. You can still eat pasta. Cook the dish you love, and if you must, cut back on the salt. You can add spices and herbs packed with flavor without the calories. For me personally, though, I would rather have a good meal than eat like a goat for three weeks! What’s the ultimate crowd-pleasing pasta dish in your house? In my house, I can make fresh pasta in three minutes. All I need to do is crack four eggs, and add 12 to 13 ounces of flour and a pinch of salt and pepper to create the dough. Then I roll it out and press it with my thumb to make orecchiette pasta, which is one of the quickest pastas. From the moment I crack the egg to the moment I plate, it’s 15 minutes. I like to add mushroom and pork to my pastas. Another favorite is fettuccine with roasted mushroom, veal broth and Grana Padano cheese. For a simple appetizer, I’ll set out a plate of cheese and prosciutto San Daniele. You must have that. It’s a little milder than prosciutto di Parma, which is more common. It’s great for snacking. You’ve partnered with Bertolli Olive Oil to inspire consumers in the kitchen. Do you have a recipe from your Let’s Cook! app with Bertolli that would be suitable for an awards-viewing party? Well, my personal favorites from the app are the Caprese Salad with Zucchini and Pork Chop with Apple Salad, but those aren’t necessarily suitable for a viewing party. T

wo years after graduating from SCI-ARC, Kevin Cozen received an ultimatum from his first client: construct the home you designed for us or we scrap the project. Cozen quickly opened Classical Progression and has since created a dramatic array of luxury “recycled” homes and commercial projects. The Santa Monica-based firm is known for deftly fusing architectural salvage and recycled building materials with innovative construction techniques and building technologies to create timeless environments. His family’s Malibu home is a virtual case study of the firm’s philosophy. After connecting with the feeling of weathered equestrian buildings in France, Cozen designed the residence to recall a rustic French barn. The façade is composed of stone and concrete walls, steel windows, recycled doorframes, wrought iron balustrades, and a reclaimed-wood pivot door to create a theatrical entrance. Inside the Great Room, discarded bowed trusses support the roof, while an Ionic column, cast-concrete fireplace, eclectic furnishings and decorative objects lend character. From the concrete floor to the antique furnishings, every component was layered by Kevin and his interior designer wife Carolyn to achieve an imaginative and comfortable haven in which to reside. www.ClassicalProgression.com
