Designer Madeline Stuart re-envisions a 1951 John Elgin Woolfdesigned classic above the Sunset Strip. By Dresden Scott

“Do people find houses? Or is it sometimes the other way around?” wondered writer Guy Trebay in an Architectural Digest article he penned about a 1951 cottage above the Sunset Strip. The answer, if met truthfully, was a little bit of both. Hotelier Jeff Klein and his film producer husband, John Goldwyn, purchased the John Elgin Woolf-designed property in 2006 after staying in the house as guests. Woolf’s Hollywood Regency style — along with design elements such as walled courtyards, theatrical entries and mansard roofs — were the architect’s hallmarks, beloved by a roster of star clients that included Errol Flynn, Judy Garland and Cary Grant, among others. The “cozy yet grand” midcentury gem stood out to the sophisticated couple amidst L.A.’s modernist “McMansions.” Once part of the estate compound of filmmaker George Cukor, their vintage masterpiece got a glamorous Hollywood rebirth when they hired AD100 designer Madeline Stuart to re-envision the three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath house as a cozy yet grand retreat tucked away in the hills. Stuart, who is known for her timeless and understated interiors, got immediately to work establishing an aesthetic that was “chic and sophisticated, yet warm and comfortable.”

“There’s a place to sit and read in every room — that was important to John and Jeff,” recalls Stuart. “I also wanted to make sure to create an environment that reflected the distinctive taste of my clients while respecting the architectural legacy of the house.” She succeeded. Stuart’s restraint resulted in the creation of mercifully livable and never over-decorated interiors that pay homage to Woolf’s original design. Gorgeous natural light defines most of the living spaces, with lavish floor-toceiling windows facing onto a welcoming central terrace and formal English garden, designed by Thomas Church and, later, Mario Nievera. “We kept the backgrounds fairly neutral (with the exception of the Chinois Den, of course, done by the previous owner, the late Greg Jordan), allowing the architecture of the house to come into clear focus,” she notes. The Los Angeles-based designer also opted to highlight some of the home’s most distinctive features, such as the stunning door hardware. She painted the doors an obsidian color that accentuated the warm brass olive-knuckle hinges and knobs. In the living room, the brick fireplace and its flanking windows rise to the full height of the 14-foot ceiling and look onto dignified cypress trees. In the den, floor-toceiling sidelights flank decorative wall panels. Stuart updated the kitchen with a Sub-Zero refrigerator, a Blanco sink with Kallista fittings and a Viking range. The master, too, opens onto the garden, and an al fresco shower is just steps beyond the master bath. The guest room features a restful skylight alcove. The pièce de résistance is the oval screening room — once a garage — inspired by the design work of William Haines in Cukor’s main residence, complete with copper crown molding, suede walls and oak-and-maple parquet flooring. “John and Jeff had already initiated the construction when I was brought on board, so the basic design intent was already set,” says Stuart. “It was up to me to incorporate the elements that would complete their vision. I adore this room. It’s both serene and sexy at the same time.” Even now, the residence celebrates a sense of understatement and elegance without pretense — rare qualities in Los Angeles. It’s just the kind of magic that comes with a home steeped in Hollywood history. Fast Track The Petersen Automotive Museum roars ahead with a red-hot reopening. By Alyson Pitarre

D

rive through L.A.’s Miracle Mile, and you’ll likely see a flash of a metal-ribbon façade streaked with red. It’s the revamped Petersen Automotive Museum, and it’s already leaving marks in a city that has recently exploded with new museums, cultural institution revitalizations and transportation hubs. In a way, it’s fitting that the vision on the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax evokes the imagery of speed, movement and “the organic curves of a coach-built automobile,” as architect Kohn Pedersen Fox once remarked. The museum’s website notes: “Because the Petersen Automotive Museum is the western gateway to Museum Row in Los Angeles, its second-generation iteration needed to be a beacon.” The Petersen is also the first in a line of revitalization projects that encompasses the Academy of Motion Pictures Museum across the street, a major overhaul of the nearby Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and a new subway station next door. “L.A. is the car capital of the world,” says Executive Director Terry Karges. “We needed the architecture to match the magnitude of what the museum is trying to do — to explore and present the history of the automobile, with L.A. as the backdrop. We wanted it to be a 21st-century storytelling museum.” The museum has succeeded. After closing in 2014, the Petersen reopened on Dec. 7, 2015, with an additional 30,000 square feet, 22 new galleries, state-of-the-art car elevator and that eye-catching façade of hot-rod-red wrapped in steel ribbons. (The roaring exterior was also a nod to founder Robert E. Petersen, whose favorite color was red.) The new architecture has its champions and critics. “Art and architecture are a matter of taste and opinion,” says Karges. “At one point, France wanted to throw the Impressionists out of the country — and look now. They are some of the most celebrated artists of our time.” Even so, the response from the public has been overwhelmingly positive, Karges says, noting that the museum’s admissions have already doubled. He is also fielding calls from film producers and car companies wanting to film commercials in front of the museum. To Karges, these examples illustrate just how quickly the Petersen has become “a part of the cultural fabric of Los Angeles,” now regarded among the most iconic buildings of the city.

Of course, that’s just the outside. What about the inside? Karges suggests starting your journey on the third floor with the “History of the Automobiles” exhibit. When you’re finished, you’ll want to walk down the grand staircase to the second floor, where you’ll learn about the automotive industry and find the museum’s new immersive technologies. Here, the Motorsports Gallery features an 180-degree screen showcasing “A Day at the Races.” There’s also the Microsoft/Forza Motorsport room — a true sight to behold, with 10 driving simulators featuring racetracks around the world. Other highlights include a studio for Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design, with clay modeling, computer imaging and rapid prototyping, as well as the Pixar Cars Mechanical Institute exhibit, where characters from the “Cars” franchise guide you through the building of a virtual race car. You’ll want to end with the “Artistry of the Automobile” exhibit on the first floor or, as Karges calls it, “rolling sculpture on podiums.” Evolving shows also keep the gallery halls feeling fresh for repeat visitors. BMW, for example, is currently presenting a rotating selection of its historic Art Cars, which have been designed by the likes of Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons. Maserati is also the subject of a “Design to Production” exhibit, which traces the legendary auto from concept to finished car. And finally, the Petersen has the one and only show floor for the Ford GT Supercar, complete with a history dating back to 1966 when the GT won Le Mans. “To see all of these beautiful cars in one place and hear people express their own surprise at how beautiful the new museum is has been incredibly exciting for us,” says Karges. With the reopening in the distance, he is already eying the future. His dream car for the first floor? The Bugatti Royale. “There are only five left in the world,” he says. True. But there’s only one Petersen Automotive Museum.

Alma’s Ari Taymor and Ashleigh Parsons get a daring reboot at The Standard, Hollywood. A chef’s journey is hardly ever a straight line. The twists and turns of Chef Ari Taymor’s trajectory in the food world over the last three years began with his downtown flagship Alma being named as Bon Appetit’s best new restaurant in 2013, and quickly followed with accolades as Food & Wine’s “Best New Chef” in 2014 and a James Beard Rising Star Chef nomination — until the sudden closing of Alma late last year. Some critics asserted that the young chef (he was 26 when Alma opened) “got too famous too fast,” or he “couldn’t deliver the expectations” that the Bon Appetit title demanded. His journey has been more nuanced than most headlines suggested. It has gone far beyond the challenges of running a mom-and-pop-style operation or the subsequent legal troubles that followed. It has also been a battle between creativity and business, between the haves and have-nots, between authenticity and the suffocating pressure of expectation, between the simple desire to make good food and the machinery of innovation. More philosophically, it was a battle for soul. (Fittingly, Alma means “soul” in Spanish.) Taymor describes being “depressed” under the scrutiny of the press and “frustrated” by a hypercritical cast of bloggers and patrons who seemed more interested in writing negative reviews than being open-minded about his experimental tasting menu. “The absolute death of creativity for me is negativity,” he says.

The shuttering of Alma’s minimal South Broadway spot last October was an ending — but also a beginning. Taymor, joined by his business partner Ashleigh Parsons, has boldly reemerged with a three-month residency inside The Standard, Hollywood. While the pair has gone from a tiny 39seat hole-in-the-wall to a swanky 62-seat space on the Sunset Strip, Taymor and Parsons have managed to keep the clean flavors of Alma intact. A few favorites from the former Alma’s à la carte menu — the English muffin with uni, burrata and caviar, as well as the seaweed and tofu beignet with yuzu koshu and lime — make a dashing appearance. New dishes have their place on the menu too, like the dry-aged New York steak with sunchoke, pickled chanterelle and brown butter béarnaise — “a fun play on steak frites,” says Taymor. An almond sponge cake with Meyer lemon, strawberries and chamomile is a nod to his childhood spent in the Santa Cruz mountains, a connection to his past that he has brought into his present. “The coastal mountains have all sorts of textures and tastes and temperatures, and I’m always trying to be present with nature in my cooking,” he says.

He is grateful “to continue to create at all,” he says, regardless of the venue. “I don’t take for granted what it means to cook my own food, to source my own food and to manage my own staff,” he adds. For Taymor, now 30, the lessons of Alma are part of his journey — the kind of growing experiences that soften the edges of youth and sharpen chefs. Los Angeles and its rabid focus on newness and invention may temper idealism, but not passion. Taymor continues to be inspired by the gastronomical talent splashed across the city: Jessica Koslow of Sqirl, Bryant and Kim Ng of Cassia, Micah Wexler of Wexler’s Deli. As a diverse food metropolis, L.A. lacks for nothing in his view. Except for, maybe, one thing: “We need more passionate people who love what they do.” That’s one order the city is uniquely positioned to fill, thanks to the roads paved by Taymor and other brave chefs who have ventured out on their own.

Kamal Hotchandani, CEO and publisher of Haute Living, may live in Miami — but he knows his way around the City of Angels in a way that surprises most people. “I am in L.A. from two to three months a year,” he says. Hotchandani has a particular affinity for West Hollywood since “it’s a melting pot of creativity and cultures,” but lives for concerts at the Hollywood Bowl (“one of the greatest venues”) and relaxing days on the water in Malibu. “L.A. is becoming more recognized by the day as one of the great world cities for dining and culture,” he adds. S

o u t h e r n C a l i f o r n i a’s neighborhoods are full of architectural gems. This 1920s Spanish Revival in La Canada was literally crumbling, but luckily with its exotic Art Deco accents intact. This enabled an expansion based upon the original artistry and aesthetics which served as an inherent blueprint. The design goal was to revere the estate’s history and incorporate modern conveniences. The home was expanded to include a master suite, library, family room, bar, cook’s kitchen, wine cellar, spa, gym and home theater. By carefully restoring the façade, a design compass manifested for the added wings. Next, the entry’s floor was replaced with appropriate multicolored Italian terra cotta. New staircases with iron railings complement the original entrance doors. Then, period furnishings and art, augmented by custom case goods and upholstery were added. Finally, in the garden, new koi pond tiles were inspired by Malibu’s Adamson House of the same era. Period homes “speak” what they desire to be which makes restoration immensely satisfying (the only puzzle piece still unknown is who the original architect was). Hopefully he or she knows that a stunning residence was immensely appreciated and thoughtfully expanded to house its very lucky stewards.
