Actress Sela Ward brings new life — and a Southern soul — to an artful French Country estate in Bel Air.

Where am I? Bali?” This was Sela Ward’s first reaction when she visited the sprawling 8-acre Bel Air estate and its verdant gardens teeming with jasmine, bougainvillea, succulents and redwoods in 2003. The Mississippi-born actress and her husband, venture capitalist Howard Sherman, initially intended to remodel the 1940 property and sell it. They immediately embarked on a renovation. “We were excited to get started,” she says. “We could ‘see’ all sorts of possibilities.”

Those possibilities eventually inspired the art- and architecture-loving couple to stay — permanently. They knew it was a serendipitous real estate find when they discovered a magazine article from 1954 featuring the house as a post-modern design by architect Samuel Marx, who also hailed from Mississippi. The synergy between their Southern pasts and Southern California presents was almost palpable in the house. Marx’s astute attention to detail, modernist fusion of design and architecture, gracious living spaces and indoor/ outdoor integration were all Ward’s cues to set up residence in the 13,932-square-foot interiors. “We were able to see that walls had been created, fireplaces had been hidden, an interior light-well covered,” Ward recalls. “After we stripped away past remodeling, we discovered that at the core was Samuel Marx’s vision of a quality of life. It was more than just a home that offered one-of-a-kind charm.” Ward commissioned architect Robbin Hayne to repair the home’s structural issues and expand its original footprint, and her friend, designer and fellow Mississippian Ann Runyon Carter, to reimagine the interiors. An art major in college, Ward was passionately involved in the design process. All three were unified in their goal to “not build yet another cookie-cutter home,” and “use the highest quality of materials to create a sense of history and warmth while combining various contemporary elements,” says Ward. In all, they spent two years collaborating on design decisions and taking their time, “gradually bringing all of our follies and imaginings to life,” she says. The result is a masterful French country refuge with a Southern-meets-Southern California soul. Hayne’s concept drew upon Marx’s original creation, while Ward and Runyon Carter peppered the interiors with art and unique finds from Ward’s two favorite destinations — New Orleans and Paris. Reclaimed 100-year-old wood beams from Louisiana and Mississippi, heart-pine flooring, antique armoire doors used for cabinets and McCarty pottery blend with Paris flea market finds such as antique chandeliers, stainless steel doors, a pharmacy cabinet for displaying dishware and a wood beam that became the anchor for the kitchen stove hood. Even the kitchen islands were crafted out of Parisian chocolate factory counters. Reveals Ward: “I’m surrounded by reminders of the delight of the search and all of the adventures along the way.” Ward says her main vision was to create “a sophisticated yet relaxed and cozy enclave where our young family could thrive, smack-dab in the middle of big city living and everything that goes along with this crazy entertainment business.” The home’s effortless flow from room to room is the evidence. The living room, dining room, and large kitchen, sitting area and breakfast room invite a sense of openness and warmth. A spacious family room and game room (with bar) open to a terrace with a three-sided infinity edge pool — a nod to the Southern California indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Ward and Sherman also added a number of elements for fun and quality of life, like an outdoor pizza oven, a screening room, an orangery outside the kitchen where the family grows citrus and herbs, a pond with a sandy beach, an organic vegetable garden and an outdoor amphitheater. “You have the sense that you have left the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles for some other part of the world,” says Ward. “To us, it feels like an exotic retreat. assion is one thing that is in abundance at Laurence Graff’s office on Albemarle Street in London’s tony Mayfair district. The jeweler — ranked among Forbes’ top billionaires in the world — has spent the last six decades innovating the fine art of diamond cutting, building one of the top jewelry businesses. His company has handled more important gem-quality diamonds than any other jeweler — a fact not lost on his clients, who have included Elizabeth Taylor, the Sultan of Brunei, Donald Trump, Oprah Winfrey and Larry Ellison. Graff’s eye for beauty and aptitude for uncovering the rarest stones even earned him the title “King of Diamonds” in the press, not to mention an award from the Queen of England. In 2013, Her Majesty honored him with the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), only two rungs down from a knighthood. We were equally as honored to interview Graff’s head in the United States: Henri Barguirdjian, president and CEO Americas, Graff Diamonds. Here is an excerpt from our dialogue. What’s the Graff secret to cutting rough diamonds? We are truly the only ones with genuine vertical integration. From the moment a rough diamond comes from the ground to the moment a client places a diamond around her neck, the stone never leaves our hands. The secret is mainly this: Mr. Graff never compromises on the way a diamond has to be cut. Mr. Graff won’t hesitate to cut a perfect 8-carat diamond from a 24-carat rough stone. Most jewelers will try to maximize the yield. Because, after all, the more it weighs, the more it is worth. But Mr. Graff believes in the beauty of the stone. He is not afraid to cut a smaller stone to produce a better jewel. It’s almost like a work of art. Yes, exactly. A beautifully cut diamond is a work of art. And how do you price art? How do you say that a Picasso is worth more than a van Gogh or a Jeff Koons? It’s a matter of beauty, rarity and perception. It’s almost impossible to quantify on a piece of paper. What are some of the qualities that Graff typically looks for when acquiring diamonds? We look for the biggest, purest, whitest color in a rough stone that we can find. However, this is just in theory. We’re dealing with Mother Nature, after all. It’s almost like making wine. One year, a winery can create a great vintage because of the rainfall. The next year, not so much. That’s an excellent analogy. You might have a good summer with a lot of rain and humidity. And the next year, you have grape juice. Just like the world’s great winemakers, we are beholden to what Mother Nature gives us. Looking back at some of the most famous Graff diamonds in history, which ones particularly stand out in your mind? There were so many! If I had to pick one, it would have to be the Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond, a rare blue diamond from the 17th century. I was fortunate enough to be involved with the exhibition at the Smithsonian in 2010. It was the first time in more than 50 years that the Wittelsbach-Graff joined the Hope Diamond. To reunite those two stones was an exceptional event for a jeweler. I was proud to have both of those stones in my hands.

Years ago, there was a trend developing where diamonds were considered an investment. Are high-quality diamonds an investment today? Or still a passion purchase? It’s both. It’s a passion purchase, for sure. But it is also an investment. Not in the sense of stocks, where you can sell it tomorrow and make a 5% profit. It doesn’t work that way. However, it will appreciate in time because it is very rare and precious. Most of our clients keep their diamonds, which eventually become family heirlooms. We have clients who keep diamonds as an investment. And some people collect diamonds like art. People buy diamonds because they like to own them or wear them. It’s linked to a happy moment: a birth of a child, anniversary, marriage, promotion. They also buy them because they love to look at them — in the same way people buy art. The value keeps appreciating as well, which adds to the equation. Where do price and demand for high-quality diamonds rest as of now? The demand is global. There is a real thirst for anything that is rare and fine and will appreciate in value. Everyone understands and appreciates how rare and special these stones are. It’s a worldwide phenomenon. Where are the biggest growth areas for your business? China, Indonesia, India, South America and the United States. However, the next continent we will see emerging is Africa, since it has the natural resources. When you see diamonds setting records, does that solidify your view? It’s a confirmation of how special those stones are. It never ceases to amaze us. Recently, there was a 9.75-carat pear shape blue diamond that sold for $33 million. That’s $3,350,000 per carat. There is no end in sight for price appreciations. The demand is far greater than the supply. What’s the next benchmark? You tell me! It all depends on what Mother Nature gives us.

Architect Richard Landry continues to make his mark on Hollywood with his American eclecticism.

nown as the “architect to the stars,” Richard Landry has mastered American eclecticism — a design tradition that yields residences that stand the test of time. It is perhaps the reason why his work has drawn the praise of so many elite and celebrity clients over the years, including Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen, Mark Wahlberg, Sylvester Stallone and Dr. Dre. Their desires are the same as those of any other homeowner. They want homes that are private. They want homes that are comfortable and timeless. And they want homes in which to entertain their family and friends. “Their homes are their refuge,” Landry says.

Which features are a lot of your clients asking for right now? The wellness approach is becoming more prevalent in the homes we are designing right now. We are seeing a lot of requests for in-home spas, massage rooms, steam rooms and gyms. The idea is that the homeowner can do everything from exercising to relaxing without leaving the house. We’re also seeing a lot of requests for beauty salons. Homeowners like the idea of getting their hair or nails done in the privacy of their homes. Why do you think your work has appealed to so many celebrities over the years?

After 30 years and 500 residences, Landry still has star — and staying — power. The award-winning, West Los Angeles-based architect is a regular fixture on the AD100 list, and his residences have been selected as Robb Report’s “Ultimate Home” five out of the last six years. We asked Landry about the things that matter most to his clients.

I’m very discreet. Privacy is everything to me. They also appreciate quality and the creative process, since many of them work in a creative arena themselves. How has your concept of “American eclecticism” evolved over the years?

What is inspiring you right now? Over the last few years, we’ve seen more demand for contemporary houses. And yet, a lot of our clients are concerned that modern homes will become dated very quickly. So, we’re playing with hybrid concepts, where perhaps the bones of the house are traditional, yet we’ll infuse contemporary elements for contrast. You see hybrid concepts in Europe quite often — especially in the hotel and institutional sectors — since many historic buildings are protected by landmark status. The exteriors are traditional, yet the interiors are very modern. The juxtaposition of opposing styles can be very interesting. We are starting to see these ideas being applied to the residential sector here in Los Angeles. Bringing the traditional and modern together is a fresh way to look at residential architecture.

We are inspired by every style, whether it is modern or traditional. I never tell a client that we are going to create a pure Italian villa or a pure French château. We make each home our own. We research each style within the context of the neighborhood or region, and we keep making it evolve. You have mastered the art of making 14,000-square foot mansions seem understated and unpretentious. How do you accomplish that? Proportions and details. This combination is what makes a project successful.
