Steve Feldman, Founder and President of Renovation Angel, is hitting the hammer on home renovation. Instead of tossing luxury kitchens and other high-end fixtures out with the proverbial bath water, these items are collected by the non-profit donation program, turning wasted items into something that benefits the greater good. Seems like a pretty smart and conscientious alternative to throwing it into the dumpster. “What many people don’t realize is that a luxury kitchen may have more value to that homeowner through the removal savings and tax deductions than a 6-year-old Mercedes-Benz,” says Feldman.

Recycling designer kitchens—what a brilliant concept. What inspired you to start Renovation Angel? Why did I start Renovation Angel? I wanted to “give back” after my life was given back to me. Here’s my story – I am a recovered addict whose life was saved 28 years ago. I was in the radio business for 18 years, winding up as the Senior Marketing Manager for Imus in the Morning Clear Channel station in Providence, RI. I left radio in 1998 to do fund-raising for the outreach projects that saved my life. In 1999, I was introduced to my first donor in Greenwich, CT. Unfortunately, the market crashed in 2001 – so the donations disappeared. I saw a “Demolition in Progress” sign at the former residence of Farah PahIavi, the Last Empress of Iran. I drove up the driveway to discover the 10,000 square foot Rockefeller Mansion was gone. So I had an idea ... why not start a demolition donation program and earn the money rather than ask for it? In 2005, I started Renovation Angel with a little “seed money,” It was just a part-time administrator and myself. Today, we are the premier recycler of luxury kitchens throughout North America. The organization has a very unique process. How exactly does it work? What are the benefits for recycling a kitchen? Donors receive four valuable benefits with our luxury recycling program: 1) thousands in tax savings, 2) free, white-glove professional, insured removal/pack/transport, 3) reduced

What’s next for Renovation Angel? Expanding – recycling more luxury kitchens, creating more jobs, earning more funds for charity. We achieve our goals by growing our referrals of luxury recycling projects.

A Fresh Point of View on Home The Grassless Garden: New Look for California Homes
California’s drought has inspired a whole new approach to the modern garden. The new “California Style” drought tolerant landscaping — also known as “The Grassless Garden” — mixes sandy paths and unique succulent clusters with the rich hues of giant Agave, pride of Madeira and bursts of bright colorful Bougainvillea. Conscientious Californians have begun replacing their water-wasting artisanal fountains and garden bird baths with creative vignettes filled with flower shaped succulents, Box wood hedges and Festuca Blue. Pebble paths are placed where grass once grew. Ceramic pots add pops of color where water thirsty perennials once were planted. This dynamic landscape design complements all architectural styles — whether a home is a Cape Cod, Mediterranean or modern beach house. As an avid gardener myself, I’m always searching for new ideas for my outdoor spaces. One of my favorite Southern California landscape architect and designers is the wildly talented Stefan Hammerschmidt in Venice. I recently caught up with Hammerschmidt to find out about his latest inspirations for the Grassless Garden.
It seems like we are in for another hot summer, and the drought is still a major concern. What impact or change has the drought had on your approach to landscape design? I’ve actually been attracted to the aesthetics of drought tolerant and California native plants since I arrived in California from my native Austria. The California drought and the ensuing campaign by the governor to preserve water usage has brought with it a renewed openness by clients to embrace design solutions that involve sustainable design. I consistently educate my clients that they can still have a lush, beautiful garden while modifying water usage. Since you are on the pulse of all things garden, what do you feel is the current garden trend?

A lot of clients are taking “farm to table” eating to the next level, by planting raised beds where they grow their favorite vegetables. I even I helped a client integrate a chicken coop into the landscape. Is it ever a good idea to use artificial turf? Yes, it is. Whether its pets and children or perpetually shady plots, there are many circumstances where artificial turf is a great design solution. It’s important to know that there’s a new generation of artifical turf that looks and feels so much more real than the turf of yesterday, and in a wide variety of colors. Finally, artificial turf can also be mixed into a planting strategy. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. When artist Robert Irwin designed the Central Garden for The Getty Museum in the 1990s, he established distinct aesthetics for all the different seasons. What is your favorite California season and why? I love the winter in Southern California. There’s a difference in light. The air is cooler and there’s actually a range of trees that are deciduous. Cities and their landscapes can be quite intimate in winter and Los Angeles is no different. Are chain link fences making a comeback? Yes, they are and there are real design benefits to using chain link. When planting climbing hedges, you actually get a thicker, more natural-looking hedge because light can enter the growth from both sides, becoming more transparent than a wood fence, for example. There has also been an exciting evolution in colors and spacing with new models of chain link. France has perfectly groomed “French Gardens” and England has lush “English Gardens.” How would you describe the “California Garden”? In a word – “romantic.” I find California gardens as incredibly textural and extra sensory. Think about sages, sumacs,
manzanitas, California valley oaks, sycamores and citrus, to name a few. They collectively bring a romance to our gardens. They beckon outdoor living and gathering. I’m a weekend gardener and I have a quirky habit of leaving my clippers throughout the yard, thus causing them to rust and ruin. What is your odd gardening habit? I love this question! I garden every day, but I often have scheduled meetings with clients where I don’t want soiled earthen hands so I use heavy duty plastic garden gloves (i.e. they call them “Marigolds” in England). I end up placing them in a different place every day – on my bean poles or vacant trellises, for example. For me, nature and “get lost day trips” up the coast are huge sources of inspiration. From what — or where — do you derive your inspiration? Inspiration can come from a number of sources. A leading one is travel, both here in California and abroad. A drive up Highway One can reveal sweeping color palates that change across each coastal zone. I also love gardens that integrate sculpture into their design. A favorite recent was Piet Oudolf’s “Open Field” at Hauser and Wirth’s Somerset gallery in the United Kingdom. I visited in the autumn after the meadow’s bloom, where there were still amazing textures and colors. Other than green, what color should every garden have? Surprise answer here – grey! Greys can be very sexy and there’s a whole kaleidoscope of greys with California natives (e.g. sage, manzanitas, agaves, aloes, blue oat grass, etc.) Before we say goodbye, what is the most unusual thing you have ever “dug up” while working on a project? A rubber figurine of a renowned comic book hero – the Green Lantern. Perhaps its original owner thought it had a green thumb and buried it for perpetual fertility.

While Wicks’s vision didn’t materialize, Abbot Kinney was having greater success just to the north with his Venice-by-the-Sea. As visitors flocked to the beach on the Red Car line, automotive races

became a huge attraction in the area between Venice and Playa del Rey. By the 1920s, the landscape was dotted with pumping oil wells. Still, the idea of a harbor persisted, with many starts and stops, and in 1949 the Army Corps of Engineers proposed a plan for a vast marina. President

In the new book, “Fifty Under Fifty: Innovators of the 21st Century,” nine of the 50 international architecture firms profiled are located right here in Los Angeles. These unparalleled firms include: Ball Nogues; Baumgarten-Urlu; Freehand Buck; John Friedman Alice Kimm; Minarc; Johnston Marklee; P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S; Patrick Tighe; and Tim Durfee Studio. Those represented in “Fifty Under Fifty” are innovators of our time. After a world-wide search of top firms, lead author Beverly Russell, along with Eva Maddox and Farooq Ameen, assembled a unique body of work; all partners in these firms are 50 years old or under, and represent a forward-thinking generation of creative practitioners, aware of global issues that urgently need solutions through imaginative design. Tigertail The 3,200-square-foot (297-squaremeter) residence is located in the Crestwood Hills neighborhood of Brentwood, California, a postwar development of modest mid-century homes. The design response is driven by pragmatic aspects of the topography and more complex three-dimensional manipulations of form. The architecture is a direct result of the various conditions inherent within the site. The peculiar
geometry of the second-story volume is a result of the existing site conditions and the current building setback regulations. Openings to the views and the need for solid walls for shear and privacy were also factors that defined the building envelope. The building is low and unassuming at street level and in keeping with the scale of the neighboring homes. The residence opens to the courtyard with
walls of glass. A series of bent, steel moment frames straddle the existing one-story structure and are expressed in the building. The folded planes of the walls and roof are an extension of the rolling topography of the hillside site. Frank and Kim Residence The Frank and Kim Residence is located 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) north of downtown Los Angeles on a hillside property in Pasadena. The existing two-story single-family house is placed at the end of an elongated property, on the edge of the hillside with a large terrace and a pool overlooking San Marino. The main feature element for the front yard is a large canopy to be used for receptions and social events, which articulates a new dynamic entrance to the house. The 65-footlong (20-meter-long) cantilevering steel structure is clad with a white translucent fabric. The canopy is lit from the inside with a combination of white and colored LED light fixtures to illuminate the garden with a soft
