THOMAS LAVIN The L.A. native and proprietor of style gives us a glimpse inside his ultra-chic world. By David De La Marca
W
hether it’s highlighting the linear perfection of a Christian Liaigre coffee table or sporting the minimalist cut of his own Dries van Noten ensemble, interior design impresario Thomas Lavin has proven that he has an indefatigable eye
for design. Fuse that eye with his razor sharp commercial prowess and a charmingly cultivated personality and what you have is the winning formula that has fueled his continued success as the owner of Los Angeles’ preeminent interior design showroom.
And though Mr. Lavin combs the world in search of the finest furnishings and accessories, this third generation Angeleno is always happy to return to his 1958 modern home in L.A. located in an area he has qualified as truly “Heaven on Earth.” With its close proximity to downtown Los Angeles and its unexpected touches of local wildlife, the Hollywood Hills provides him with peace and relaxation whilst being just a stone’s throw away from the eclectic, urban vibe of Melrose Avenue and West Hollywood. We recently caught up with Mr. Lavin at his Pacific Design Center showroom to learn more about his personal style, his home and some of the international trends that are shaping the future of Southern California style.

What would you say are some of the key trends in interior design that seem to be influencing your clients as well as the brands you represent? Wallcoverings - When I started in the industry 22 years ago, wall-covering was a rarity. Sometime prior to that, people decided that plain walls were the fashion. However, and excitingly, wall-covering continues to become an important category. For example, we represent the august company, Maya Romanoff. While Maya Romanoff is a major company in the industry, they provide bespoke product that is more evocative of a boutique. A few of our textile companies have also introduced wallcovering that coordinates with their fabrics: Galbraith & Paul and Cloth. Out of San Francisco, we bring Surfaces by David Bonk to the marketplace, which is a hand-screened product that is elegant yet passes the rigors of hospitality.
When you need your own retail therapy, what are your go-to shops? I reconnected with one of my friends from high school at Barney’s — she has become “My Lady” when it comes to Fashion. We get to hang out and she keeps me dressed properly for work and play. Garde in Los Angeles is a visual delight with fashion, jewelry, and home accessories. They curate like none-other in the city and I stop in often to see what they have

Tuell & Reynolds based in Healdsburg, California created a museum quality bronze cabinet that we have on our floor (located in my office for protection and joy). James Magni designed and made a limited edition cast glass table two years ago that we sold almost upon receiving it at our Los Angeles outpost. The Design Process - Another realm in which I have experienced changes is the process itself. Consumers are increasingly knowledgeable about home furnishings and are more engaged in the process. Through this, they can sometimes drive a project that would have been anathema when I first started. We can already see how Millennial culture is beginning to affect how the global luxury consumer lives and shops. Do you think your younger clients have a different perspective on interior design? We continue to learn about the younger clients. I feel that the design industry is finding its way vis-à-vis technology and viscerally. At our price point, the consumer often prefers to see product before purchasing. However, all preliminary work is conducted on the Internet. Due to the expansion of our “global village,” we have more international customers than ever before. They shop around the world and Los Angeles is a major destination for travel. As retail home furnishings have grown and provides appealing goods, our challenge is how we introduce our furniture, textiles, and lighting to the end user. Similar to high-fashion luxury brands, the companies that we present are exclusive and made for a discerning clientele. Though many of the brands that you represent are international, would you say that the selections you make for your Los Angeles showrooms reflect a particular Southern California style? Are there any local designers that you recommend discovering? I think as a born and reared Angeleno (even having attended UCLA for university), my point of view is Southern California. We are not formal, enjoy our outdoors most of the year and strive for comfort even in elegance. Certainly as a culture that blurs the boundaries of the interior, outdoor fabric or “high-performance” is the fastest growing segment of the textile market. We represent Giati, Chella, and Link, among others. Giati and Chella are born in Southern California while Link hails from Texas. Each provides a different point of view on what a highperformance fabric may be. You have been quoted in saying that your home in the West Hollywood Hills is truly “Heaven on Earth”. Tell us more about why you love it so much. My home evokes quintessential California — on a cul-de-sac in the hills. The only human sound I experience is the Sunday paper hitting the driveway. Otherwise, I hear the hawks and owls that nest nearby; see quail, raccoons, deer, and a lot of coyotes (whose haunting night call is something to behold). And while I can hide out, I can get downtown in 20 minutes for dinner or the Philharmonic. Gary Hutton designed my interior when I moved in, having designed my last house. Gary “got” me more than I did myself. The interior is understated, masculine and modern while incorporating family antiques, 20th century, and my collections of 19th Century Komai work, as well as Arts & Crafts silver.
to tease. Down the street from Garde is Hotel de Ville, owned and operated by my friend Javier Brambila. His not only designs eye glasses but brings in the latest from Europe as well as vintage dead stock. If I am in San Francisco, my favorite clothing store in North America, MAC, in Hays Valley. Owned by a brother/sister team, they have the most discerning point of view (and to my liking, have the largest Dries van Noten and Commes des Garçons buy on the continent). As a native Angeleno, I am sure you are equally passionate about dining out. Any recommendations? My friends and I try what’s new. Maude by Curtis Stone is non-pareil when in our fair city for haute cuisine. A sublime experience of molecular gastronomy presented in a California atmosphere. My regular stop is Lucques; Suzanne Goin turns out perfect food at every meal. They have even created the “TL” special for me, which is vegetables of the day. The Broad Stage A True California Treasure California’s performing arts are a vibrant and exciting scene for a bounty of performers. Since opening its doors in 2008, The Broad Stage (not to be confused with The Broad Museum in downtown Los Angeles) has become a formidable California cultural institution and community hub; presenting the world’s finest musicians – from classical, popular, jazz and world genres—theater companies, opera soloists, documentarians and photographers, dance troupes and innovative performing artists to a diverse and growing audience in Santa Monica. Every audience member can find something of interest in their distinct and high quality lineup. No other performing arts center west of the 405 can boast such consistently stellar lineups of performers. This local California treasure with its two intimate and cozy venues consists of a 500-seat state-of-the-art main stage space (The Broad Stage) and 99-seat versatile space (The Edye). Recently I reached out to Ms. Jane Deknatel, current director of the Broad Stage, to catch up with her on this California performing arts treasure in the heart of Santa Monica. As director of the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, CA, how do you feel the “California lifestyle” has influenced and/or played a role in the design and function of this local treasure? Everything about The Broad Stage reflects bringing performing artists from around the world and the nation that would have something to say to our audience here in Santa Monica, and to celebrate theatre and dance companies from our area. It is a quintessential California way to view the arts. The entire venue, with its open feeling of light and air in the lobby, though the blonde wood interior, breathes a welcoming atmosphere of the building itself that says California to me – since we are about a mile from the beach, the spacious lobby was actually conceived without air conditioning to take advantage of the Santa Monica ocean breeze, providing a kind of natural comfort that we enjoy here. Recently I was at The Edye, a smaller performance space with 99 seats, to see Cuban pianist Alfredo
Rodriquez and I was in awe of how intimate and private the setting was. Why has the Broad Stage chosen to support several smaller venues rather than have one large stage? When the buildings were originally conceived there was always the thought that there should be two performance spaces – a larger, 500-seat space, which would provide a full measure of intimacy, but provide enough seating for a larger community to enjoy a performance, and then a smaller very intimate space, that was extremely versatile, and could be used for emerging artists – like Alfredo Rodriguez – or work that was more experimental. The space – a traditional theater “black box” – can be configured for a traditional concert, or configured in any way a director could imagine! As the current director of this Westside gem, what is the best part of your job? I have been with the organization for seven of its nine years – moving from development advisor to director. It has great strengths as an organization – a board that is dedicated to its mission of presenting the community with first class performances, and a history of wonderful artists– including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Helen Hunt in Our Town, Plácido Domingo, Judd Hirsch in Freud’s Last Session, F. Murray Abraham in The Merchant of Venice, five visits from Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre from London, Handspring Puppet Company performing A Midsummer’s Night Dream, Judy Collins, Ben Vereen, Hal Holbrook in Mark Twain Tonight!, Esperanza Spalding, Sir James Galway, Andre Watts, Bobby McFerrin, Colin Hay, Denis O’Hare in An Iliad, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Kelli O’Hara. For first time patrons, what do you feel is a “must see” of the 50 attractions for the 2016-2017 season? Of course, I think all of our attractions are all “must sees” – there is jazz pianist Joey Alexander, the sensation of this year’s GRAMMY telecast and one of the most important current breakout performers in any genre, and then the legendary musical theatre performer Chita Rivera, who came to fame as the original Anita in West Side Story. And then there is Glee star Matthew Morrison; two of the most important LA dance companies – DIAVOLO, celebrating its 25th anniversary and performing its
new work Passengers, and BODYTRAFFIC. There is MacArthur Genius award winner Kyle Abraham’s vibrant company Abraham.In.Motion, and seminal musicians like Brad Mehldau and Joshua Redman, and Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn. One of my favorite attractions is the Celebrity Opera Series co-produced by the LA Opera, it is a terrific opportunity to expose young and old to Opera, are there any plans to expand the series? It is amazing to hear these voices, trained to fill opera houses, in our intimate venue. This season’s Celebrity Opera Series, made possible by the generous support of the Lloyd E. Rigler-Lawrence E. Deutsch Foundation, includes Vittorio Grigòlo, Angela Gheorghiu, Piotr Beczala, Diana Damrau, and one of Opera’s breakout stars -- the 2014 Richard Tucker and 2014 Beverly Sills Awards winner Michael Fabiano. Each of these performers is accompanied by a full symphony orchestra. What we are able to book and how often is about a different set of parameters than other attractions. We have a wish list of course – but these highly in demand performers book their schedules ahead for five years, so we are constantly working with the most important opera managers in the world figuring out when their schedules match our open times in the theatre. For me there is nothing better than listening to live music, or experiencing live theater, the Broad Stage offers an intimate setting with world class talent. When people come to the Broad Stage to experience an event, what feeling or experience do you hope they take home with them? I think a lot about what our audience gets to take home with them – certainly spending a few hours in the company of one of the world’s great performing artists, whether we are entertained, enchanted, given a lot of consider, or just the beautiful sound of music or the human voice. It all has great value. But in our show we have a chance to celebrate love, in a world gone mad. A few hours of love is beyond measure or our system of value.

AR C H I TEC TU R E & DESIGN ART: IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER…OR THE INSTALLER?
by Bret Parsons dgar Degas is quoted as saying “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” Well, if you’re lucky enough to have a collection of works by Claude Lalanne, Jean Dubuffet, Claudio Bravo, Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Fernando Botero, David Smith or Louise Nevelson, you’ll need a highly skilled design practitioner to help “make others see.” That’s when you call interior designer Jeffrey Hitchcock who’s arranged extraordinary collections for clients. However, for a mere mortal’s assortment, his display techniques still apply. First and foremost, scale is critical. Does the piece “fit” the room? A tiny painting in the middle of a long hallway will never be appreciated. Second, the flow: how does one’s eye travel from one piece of art to another? Is it jarring or soothing? Third, arrange disparate collectables together and forget “matchy matchy” which is inherently boring. Next, there’s balance. Distribute pieces evenly through the entire space and not simply grouped over the fireplace hearth. Fifth, once the final arrangement pleases you, light it properly! This aspect is often overlooked yet makes all the difference. Finally, place artifacts in unexpected places such as bathrooms, kitchens, and even near the back door. Art nourishes the soul--position it where you’ll see it often.
