I made a tomato sauce, took canned olives, shredded cheese, and made a pizza. Obviously a funny one, but during Passover we couldn’t eat bread so I made this matzah pizza for myself. My brother saw it and requested one, after that my father did the same, and I ended up making them for everyone. I was very young and it was a pretty fun experience. I continued to play around in my childhood with cooking, but didn’t pick it back up till I started the food truck.
What do you cook at home? Cooking at home is a bazaar one. Sometimes I feel inspired and I go all out and make my own stock, risotto, pasta, ice cream, etc. Other times it’s just eggs and steak. Most times I use it for development though, a kitchen loses its home feel as you work in them professionally. Even my kitchen at home feels partially like a work

What would be your “last meal?” I would be too stressed knowing it’s my last meal to eat, but if I had to pick one last meal I would go with a traditional Korean soup meal. Sides of pickled vegetables, stone pot rice, sweet potatoes in sesame oil, fermented cabbage, and an extra helping of Ghochujang (Korean chili paste). Korean food is my ultimate comfort food.

Attracted by healthful air and new possibilities in the West, a dentist, Dr. Jacob Lanterman, and a veteran of the Civil War, Colonel Adolphus Williams, purchased Rancho La Cañada in 1875. Investing their hopes, they built homes, drew up subdivision maps and established a church and a school. Their descendants continued to promote the region through the coming years. The construction of a bridge across the Arroyo Seco at Devil’s Gate opened up more convenient access to and from neighboring La Crescenta and Pasadena and “tourists” from the city began to build homes and cabins in the growing town. 100

Flintridge began as a 1,700-acre parcel subdivided and named by U.S. Senator Frank Flint. After years of efforts on the part of residents, the two communities were joined and incorporated as La Cañada Flintridge in 1976.

W
hen a Westside Los Angeles couple decided to move from their spacious family home to a penthouse condominium, reality suddenly struck: their living space would be reduced by half. Their new place had to serve a variety of requirements including generous, open areas in which to frequently entertain large groups; abundant wall space to accommodate an enviable collection of contemporary art; plus, his and her offices. While the entire space was being designed to exacting specifications, something wasn’t quite right as the husband began to fret about the loss of his beloved home workshop. His was a multi-year avocation which not only featured an extensive collection of prized woodworking tools, but provided important “getaway time” from a vital life. How in the world could a workshop even be incorporated? The challenge was indeed a dilemma as spaces had been allocated. However, ingenuity struck: they would “grab” square footage from the elegant paneled library (see images at right). Architect Richard Landry and interior designer Karla Champion reworked the space and then the furnishings. Voila! A “Workshop in the Sky” was born. The husband is absolutely delighted as his love of woodworking continues, but from a slightly “elevated” perspective: the 21st floor overlooking Southern California! www.KarlaChampion.com
