orget the iconic submarine car in “The Spy Who Loved Me” or the wooden fishing boat in “Quantum of Solace.” The next James Bond now has a much more stylish maritime ride: the 37-foot Aston Martin AM37 powerboat, just unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show this week. The new day-cruiser — offered in two versions — marks the iconic British motoring brand’s thrilling entry into the nautical world.

The gorgeous powerboat is everything you’d expect from a luxury automaker that has been Bond’s sports car of choice for over five decades. Clean, sleek lines. The latest technology. Bespoke craftsmanship. According to Matthew Clarke, general manager of marketing and communications for Aston Martin in The Americas, “the AM37 is intended as a translation of our brand DNA into a maritime concept.” The idea, he says was to challenge the status quo. They succeeded.

Still, we are dying to know how this enviable, high-octane water vessel came to fruition … and just how, and when, can we get our hands on one?

BEHIND THE DESIGN The AM37 is the result of two years of research and development. Aston Martin brought together its most experienced designers and master craftsman — who worked on iconic cars such as One-77, Aston Martin Vulcan and the new DB11 — to create a truly unique powerboat that reinterpreted their automotive experience for the water.

“This powerboat still reflects the same values of power, beauty and soul and maintains Aston Martin’s purity in design language and proportion,” says Clarke. “At the outset of this project, our design team, led by chief creative officer Marek Reichman, set the goal of ensuring that the boat design was as beautiful and timeless as our cars.”

Reichman and his design team collaborated closely with naval architect Mulder Design to bring their ambitious vision for a powerboat to fruition. Together, they brought their creative expertise and specialist skills to Quintessence Yachts, which engineered the Aston Martin design. Said Reichman: “It was important to us when considering this project to make sure that the boat design was as beautiful and timeless as our cars, the AM37 is a striking boat with fantastic proportion and elegance.”

Now, here’s where the AM37 is truly Bond-worthy. While it is a day cruiser, it can also be transformed into an overnight berth by transforming the table into a comfortable bed.

INTERIOR In the well-appointed cabin, aspiring 007s will also find absolute comfort onboard via mood lighting, air-conditioning, a refrigerator, microwave oven and coffee machine and a lavatory. The rear seating, crafted from the finest leather (another Aston Martin calling card), can accommodate up to eight people. (An absolute must for entertaining).

EXTERIOR Like Aston Martin cars, “the exterior of AM37 features dynamic proportions in a design that is simple, yet immaculately executed,” says the brand. A wraparound windscreen, created from a single piece of sculpted glass, is fluidly draped over the AM37’s foredeck. The extreme double curvature “sets a new industry standard,” according to the brand.

Sliding deck technology allows owners to cover the cockpit of the boat completely at the touch of a button. Bond-like transformations and tech innovations abound. Three lightweight carbon panels, operated by the AM37 key, fold under the aft deck when the cockpit is uncovered. An electro-hydraulic carbon fibre bimini top is stowed under the engine hatch when not in use and, extending from the aft deck, a swim platform allows for easy access to the water.

AT T H E H E L M Echoing styling elements from Aston Martin’s most advanced sports cars, the AM37’s carbon fiber dashboard includes fine leather with a steering wheel, throttle handles and joystick in polished metals. The boat’s navigation, control monitor and entertainment systems are all integrated, with advanced multimedia functions.

TWO VERSIONS The 37-foot model is available in two versions. The AM37 comes with an estimated top speed of 45 knots and a choice of two 370 hp Mercury diesel or two 430 hp Mercury petrol engines. The AM37S version has an estimated 50 knots, thanks to its twin 520 hp Mercury petrol engines.

A NEW BAR The AM37 has set a new bar for luxury powerboats, and for other luxury motoring brands who may be eying the water as their next design destination to conquer. Katia Bassi, VP of AML & Managing Director of AM Brands, summed it up best: “The Aston Martin Art of Living is a way of life that captures the very essence of the Aston Martin brand, and AM37 is a fine example of this philosophy.”

Soon the pier (one of five in Santa Monica) was built, movie companies captured the scenery and Douglas Aircraft set up shop in a former film studio. The stretch of shore north of the pier came to be known as the Gold Coast, with its wealth of newly-built private clubs and celebrity homes. By 1930, the population had reached 32,000 and the city was graced with handsome hotels, department stores and impressive commercial buildings.

by Bret Parsons ew York City-based Ferguson & Shamamian Architects is at the top of their field for high-end traditional and classical residential design. The firm has built an extensive body of work across the country with several projects in Los Angeles. Of particular interest is this world-class estate in the Holmby Hills enclave north of Sunset Boulevard. (Actor Bob Cummings once quipped, “Beverly Hills is a holding pattern until you’re rich enough for Holmby Hills.”) This celebrated property, owned by a prominent entertainment industry couple, counts Fanny Brice, Alan Ladd, Jr. (who grew-up across the street), and Sandra & Jerry Moss as past stewards. Poised on nearly two acres, each element of the estate was thoughtfully updated and renewed with quiet confidence: a majestic Hollywood Regency main house, beguiling guesthouse, secluded pool with cabana and gym, lighted tennis court (a rare find today), and lush, verdant grounds.
