he beauty of a glass house is in its unobstructed views and the seamless blending with Mother Nature’s glory. It’s always been an architectural marvel, and a benchmark of purist modernism. When Philip Johnson designed his famous 1949 Glass House in New Canaan, CT, he stunned the architectural world, which generated questions about maintenance, insulation, durability, breakability, security and of course, privacy. It was indeed a landmark moment in architecture. Today, glass has become a singular art form and is clearly not the same product it once was. Enter Sky-Frame, a Swiss-based company (the U.S. branch is in Culver City) that is creating state-of-the-art aluminum sliding glass door systems that contain a self-cleaning track which disappears quietly into the walls of one’s home. The glass material is so advanced that it’s nearly impossible to discern any sort of barrier between the resident and the great outdoors. "A view, not a window," is their motto, as there's hardly a trace of hardware in sight.
