oday, affluent homeowners are making grander design statements with their baths. Whether it’s adorning the bath with a one-of-a-kind backlit onyx sink or a monogrammed crystal-inset faucet, it is
increasingly common to see bath customizations that are tailored to a homeowner’s exact desires and tastes. “Wealth has grown tremendously in last 20 years,” explains Pedro Uranga, North American director for THG Paris, a French manufacturer of bathroom fittings and accessories. “To have a home built exactly to your measure with the finest of materials and finishes, from top to bottom, has become more than a passion project today for high-net-worth individuals — it is a standard requirement.” Uranga would know. ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN LIGHT AND SCALE By Kevin Mark Lodie This year’s theme at the Venice Architecture Biennale, “Freespace,” proposed that architecture is the play of light, air, gravity and natural resources, and therefore, the natural environment is the architect’s principal client. We see this throughout Los Angeles, where abundant sunlight and cinematic landscapes have informed the design of homes such as the Eames House in Pacific Palisades, Pierre Koenig’s Stahl House and Richard Neutra’s Lovell Health House, to name just a few. Of course, the more traditional client, the actual resident, also merits consideration. In the 1940s, French architect Le Corbusier put man at the center of design with his Modulor system, a human-based range of proportions “universally applicable to architecture and to mechanical things.” To understand how to best manage the prerogatives of these two “clients,” I met with architect Erik Petersen of PHX Architecture. For Petersen, the challenge comes down to two governing considerations: light and scale. “Where sunlight enters a home is crucial to situating and designing a space that doesn’t fight against nature, but instead embraces it to create a natural flow and collaboration between indoor and outdoor spaces,” says Petersen. His organic approach to design is very much influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, at whose firm, Taliesin Architects, Petersen honed his skills. Equally important to Petersen’s process is a Corbusian approach to scale. When living in and moving about our homes, we experience a spatial relationship with the home’s design that affects us both mentally and emotionally. The right adjustments can make us feel either more or less at home without necessarily understanding why.

From PHX’s Beverly Hills office, Petersen shared a few tips about working with natural light and finding the right scale for you: • Pay attention to where the sun touches your home at different times of day. Knowing this will help you make decisions that optimize your home’s design to enjoy better flow, more even light and improved energy efficiency. • Test how you respond to a space by visualizing (or testing in actual rooms) what proportions work best in the areas you use for sleeping, eating, working and entertaining. Go with your gut reaction. It has to feel right. • Assess your home’s vanishing points – the open lines of sight that extend beyond a room or beyond the home to the outdoors. If potential views are blunted, consider ways to open barriers to improve flow and feel more connected to the place you live.
