Caren Rideau, founder of The Kitchen Design Group in Pacific Palisades, knows a good deal about what constitutes the perfect kitchen. Since founding her kitchen design studio in 1992, she has designed and renovated hundreds of beautiful kitchens in some of the most notable luxury estates in the area. Here are a few of Rideau’s observations on current custom kitchen trends: Statement-Making Ranges and Range Hoods With a renewed interest in cooking, there is increased demand for cooking performance and more powerful appliances. At the same time, homeowners have become intrigued with adding color in brilliant hues – blues, greens, reds – in the kitchen. As a result, topof-the-line European ranges are being paired with customized range hoods that have become a design element unto themselves. Together, they are now considered to be the “jewelry” of the kitchen. Some manufacturers are even adding Swarovski crystals.

Visually Expanding Interior Kitchen to the Outdoors Inspired by So Cal’s temperate climate, many of Rideau’s recent kitchen renovation projects have included installing large sliding doors – a minimum of 12 feet – and replacing small windows with large glass panels. The intent is to create a visually expansive area that connects the interior with the exterior. Dividing the Kitchen into “Stages” With people spending more time in their kitchens, Rideau says she is breaking up kitchens into “stages” – areas that meet her clients’ specific needs and interests. For wine aficionados, she has incorporated sommelier sections where they can properly share their special bottles with guests. For people who love to bake, she has created baker’s corners with professional ovens as well as custom baking racks and shelves. Clients also have requested small greenhouse attachments for homegrown herbs and mini-pizza parlors, complete with wood-fired pizza areas and marble-top or stainless-steel counters to roll out the dough.
