Today, approximately 32 million millionaires – those with a net worth of $1 million or more – make up about 7% of the adult population. There are also 1,770 demi-billionaires – those with over $500 billion in assets. Among the most popular ZIP codes for millionaires in Southern California are Laguna Niguel (92677) in Orange County and Rancho Palos Verdes (90275) in Los Angeles County. Notably absent from the top 20 most-expensive ZIP codes is Beverly Hills’ renowned 90210. The report found that the most common age group for today's

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN LUXURY ON TAP By Kevin Mark Lodie Sherle Wagner International has designed extraordinary fixtures for the bath since 1945. Its eclectic offerings, luxurious materials and attention to detail have transformed the utilitarian bathroom into an architectural cornerstone. I recently met with Vince Geoffroy, who leads the firm. Son-in-law to the founder, he brings a passion for art and architecture that continues the brand’s legacy of exquisitely inspired form and ornament. We discussed design and what determines taste today. How do you approach design? Design is an opportunity to bring simplicity, function and personality to a space. Some bathrooms are designed as a single sculptural unit, free of ornament. Those spaces are beautiful, but often cold. In our work, we look for opportunities where simple touches – a faucet, a hinge, a door knob – crafted in materials like burnished gold or platinum can impart warmth and personality to even the most streamlined contemporary designs. The room is not separate and impenetrable; it envelops you. Are today’s discerning clients following or leading trends? Our clients have the confidence to pursue their own individual style, so we enable them to express that. Sherle Wagner’s first creation was a dolphin faucet in 24-karat gold. Clients still request it for ornate settings. Others seek contemporary designs such as our Steps collection. In both cases, we provide the option of tens of finishes, including some in a precious metal. Clients can further personalize fixtures with elements in carved rock crystal or amethyst, or with inlays of malachite, tiger's eye or other semi-precious stones. Making those decisions calls for not just individuality, but sophistication. Our clients are often guided by a designer… but only to a certain degree. Consumers today are more sophisticated. The internet has increased exposure to art, architecture and design, and that has cultivated a higher level of taste. Today’s mass market has more of a luxury eye. So have Instagram and Pinterest replaced the Grand Tour? Not quite. Social curation and consumption have an effect, but ideally, they prompt real experience, not replace it. Sherle and his wife Rose traveled extensively and brought those experiences to every new design. Viewing art at museums, strolling through historic neighborhoods and experiencing how the old and new are juxtaposed in cities can continually teach and inspire.
