ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN CLEAR INNOVATION Translucent and seamless, glass is the ultimate agent of minimalism in contemporary design. Houses predominantly constructed with glass have garnered praise from critics and architects around the world for their free-flowing spaces and virtuoso triumph of weightless volume over mass. They are the progeny of the “International Style” brought to life by Philip Johnson’s iconic Glass House and so many of Los Angeles’ renowned Case Study Houses, including the timeless Stahl House in Hollywood with its endless views of the entire city. But when it comes to the transparent pane, there is, of course, more than meets the eye. With even the most streamlined windows and sliding glass doors, the manufacturer’s pursuit of perfection is multifaceted. To understand this better, I met with Nic Neumann, CEO of Sky-Frame, Inc., a leading innovator in the manufacture of glass for the architectural and residential design markets. Typically, we look through glass. What should we look for? First, clarity. As with precious gems, clarity is a measure of quality. We source materials from Europe, where the level of iron extracted from the glass is exceedingly high. This creates a very clear glass, without any green tint.

Some of your sliding glass doors are more than 20 feet wide. Are weight and traction an issue? Perhaps for some. Our research and development team is continuously innovating to provide a light user experience with a smooth glide. We then further ensure quality through a barrage of additional tests with Eidgenössische Technische University, the “MIT of Switzerland.” We have also designed a special deflection mechanism, so years after installation, when a home settles (deflection), a glazier can easily adjust the pane and tracks without damaging the structure or surrounding finishes. Does flexibility in design mean the materials are a bit less airtight? The opposite. Energy efficiency is a top priority. Our ability to make adjustments at any time ensures flush insulation. And the frames themselves are “thermally broken,” meaning there’s almost no exchange in temperature through the frames. You can keep the weather out but bring LA’s mountain and city views in!
