Market Watch: 2016 Real Estate Trends See where the market is going and where it has been.
A New Year marks a new beginning and a list of endless possibilities for the year to come. Last year was the best year for housing since 2007 and according to a recent forecast by realtor.com, the 2016 market is poised to be even better. Continued growth in the economic sphere and increases in employment provide for greater consumer confidence and purchasing power. Building upon last year’s energy and employment projections, the market will return to a more balanced state more consistent with historical trends through steady growth in home sales and prices. Millennials represented 2 billion sales in 2015 (1/3 of homebuyers) and are expected to continue to be a major buying pool in 2016. GenXers in their prime earning years and older baby boomers approaching retirement are also predicted to play key roles.
This year, we will also see a strong influx in new-home sales and single-family construction as builders begin to offer more affordable products that appeal to the first-time buyer segment. While none of us have a crystal ball, all signs point to a bright outlook for 2016. L.A.-based Bend Goods sets its sights on creating timeless designs that defy tradition. By Lauren Gega
G
aurav Nanda, the creative genius behind Bend Goods, has made his mark on the modern furniture scene with his whimsical shapes and sustainable objects. Immersed in mid-century design from an early age, Nanda’s artistic vision became reality when he opened the doors of his L.A. studio in 2010. The Michigan native is known for his bold color selection and intricate patterns created through his signature application, “bending” — a method of shaping wire by hand and spot welding. The result of this innovative application yields pieces built for style, comfort and utility that stand the test of time. We recently sat down with the designer and entrepreneur to dig a little deeper into the Bend world and discover the real story behind what makes his goods so, well, good. YOU LEFT YOUR FORMER LIFE AT GM AS A VEHICLE INTERIOR MODEL SCULPTOR. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO TRADE IN CARS FOR FURNITURE AND HOME GOODS? Getting my job at GM was more of a decision based on necessity than following a dream. I had just graduated from design school and saw GM as a great place to hone my skills at a very stable company. It was a great job and truly gave me the product design foundation that I would need to start Bend. I am also from a very entrepreneurial family; I had watched my parents and younger sister both work for themselves, and I knew that I wanted that lifestyle for myself eventually. After leaving GM, I moved and was searching for dining room chairs for my new place and couldn’t find any wire chairs that I liked. I am a big fan of the Bertoia, but wanted something different. I noticed a need for myself and figured that other consumers could be feeling the same way, so I developed my first line, and the rest is history, so to speak. YOU’RE ORIGINALLY FROM MICHIGAN. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT L.A. LIVING? WHERE DO YOU GO TO FEEL INSPIRED? Having traveled here throughout my childhood, I truly fell in love with the vibe and lifestyle of Southern California. When I decided to get into furniture, I was inspired by the indoor-outdoor quality of life here. It just made sense to me to come here and immerse myself in that life. Now living here, there is truly no end to where I can go to find inspiration. There are streets in Hollywood and on the Westside in Venice and Mar Vista that are like time capsules, with mid-century modern homes lining them. I am also very outdoorsy and active, so Runyon Canyon or a hike up Temescal Canyon can really reset my brain. There is nothing like going to the Hollywood
Bowl to see almost any show to make you feel creative and inspired; that space is truly a magical place. AS A CHILD, YOU SPENT SUMMERS VACATIONING IN PALM SPRINGS. HOW DOES MID-CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN INFLUENCE YOUR PIECES? Those Palm Springs vacations are what made me want to do this. I feel lucky to have been able to spend time in Palm Springs in the 1970s, in the city’s true heyday. The vibe and the excitement that could be felt during that time is what I try to recreate in a modern way with my design and with our marketing and branding. Those are days that changed my perception of life and will be my influence and muse for maybe the rest of my life. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT BEND’S DRIVE FOR MAKING SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS? We spend a lot of time thinking about our impact on the environment. We make our products out of steel, which is both plentiful on earth and highly recyclable. We also construct our chairs so that the legs can be removed, which allows us to ship two per box and limit our carbon footprint. We aim to make quality furniture that is timeless in its design and built to last just as long. We like to say that we are making the heirlooms of tomorrow. YOUR WORK HAS GARNERED A LOT OF ATTENTION FROM HEAVY HITTERS LIKE HGTV, ELLE DECOR AND ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE MONTHS? We are launching our second collection to date and doing it in a very out-of-the-box way. Each month, we will be launching one piece from the collection. Our first release was at the end of January, a hybrid side tablestool that we call Switch. The rest of the collection, like Switch, is very innovative and creative. It all incorporates our signature wire but includes categories that we have never offered before. There are also some upholstered pieces toward the end of the year that we are really excited about. nown as the “architect to the stars,” Richard Landry has mastered American eclecticism — a design tradition that yields residences that stand the test of time. It is perhaps the reason why his work has drawn the praise of so many elite and celebrity clients over the years, including Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen, Mark Wahlberg, Sylvester Stallone and Dr. Dre. Their desires are the same as those of any other homeowner. They want homes that are private. They want homes that are comfortable and timeless. And they want homes in which to entertain their family and friends. “Their homes are their refuge,” he says.
Which features are a lot of your clients asking for right now? The wellness approach is becoming more prevalent in the homes we are designing right now. We are seeing a lot of requests for in-home spas, massage rooms, steam rooms and gyms. The idea is that the homeowner can do everything from exercising to relaxing without leaving the house. We’re also seeing a lot of requests for beauty salons. Homeowners like the idea of getting their hair or nails done in the privacy of their homes. Why do you think your work has appealed to so many celebrities over the years?
After 30 years and 500 residences, Landry still has star — and staying — power. The award-winning, West Los Angeles-based architect is a regular fixture on the AD100 list, and his residences have been selected as Robb Report’s “Ultimate Home” five out of the last six years. We asked Landry about the things that matter most to his clients.
I’m very discreet. Privacy is everything to me. They also appreciate quality and the creative process, since many of them work in a creative arena themselves. How has your concept of “American eclecticism” evolved over the years?
What is inspiring you right now? Over the last few years, we’ve seen more demand for contemporary houses. And yet, a lot of our clients are concerned that modern homes will become dated very quickly. So, we’re playing with hybrid concepts, where perhaps the bones of the house are traditional, yet we’ll infuse contemporary elements for contrast. You see hybrid concepts in Europe quite often — especially in the hotel and institutional sectors — since many historic buildings are protected by landmark status. The exteriors are traditional, yet the interiors are very modern. The juxtaposition of opposing styles can be very interesting. We are starting to see these ideas being applied to the residential sector here in Los Angeles. Bringing the traditional and modern together is a fresh way to look at residential architecture.
We are inspired by every style, whether it is modern or traditional. I never tell a client that we are going to create a pure Italian villa or a pure French château. We make each home our own. We research each style within the context of the neighborhood or region, and we keep making it evolve. You have mastered the art of making 14,000-square foot mansions seem understated and unpretentious. How do you accomplish that? Proportions and details. This combination is what makes a project successful.
