In 1823, Captain José Romero and his party camped at hot springs — agua caliente — on their search for a route between the Pacific Ocean and the Colorado River. In 1853, the area was surveyed and eventually divided into one-mile square sections. Alternate odd-numbered sections were deeded to the Southern Pacific Railroad and by 1876, Los Angeles and Indio were linked by rail. With the discovery of artesian wells, agriculture flourished, with date palm cultivation encouraged by the federal government’s distribution of free date seeds. By the 1920s, the Coachella Valley had been discovered by the Hollywood elite as a quiet getaway. Subsequent decades saw a steady growth of vacation homes, winter residences and golf/tennis resorts. Visitors escaping brutal winters found the 350 days of sunshine and mild temperatures of the desert winter much to their liking and many
