We have a really great team. We care about everyone-employees and customers. With your recent hugely successful expansion into Studio City, do you have any plans for a “3rd” Joan’s on Third? Well, we are currently looking at locations in the Arts district of Downtown Los Angeles, and maybe Newport Beach / San Diego areas, however nothing is definite as of yet. You mentioned a lot of your initial recipes were your mother’s. What is your favorite childhood dish? Macaroni & Cheese-we had it every Friday! That’s the reason it’s been a signature dish on our menu since the beginning. What one ingredient do you love and believe everyone should use? Butter and salt. I can’t live without them. Summer is around the corner. Describe the perfect JOT picnic basket for say, the Hollywood Bowl? Delicious cheese, pâté, rillette, spiced pistachios, rosemary mixed nuts, dried fruits, wonderful crusty baguette, a simple salad, a friendly bottle of wine and something sweet. What is your favorite place to eat other than Joan’s on Third? Right now I am loving Manuela and Kismet. In our neighborhood, I go to Izakaya (on W. 3rd Street location) for sushi when I don’t feel like cooking. What is your “food” guilty pleasure? The Sardinian flatbread we make here at Joan’s on Third. It’s so delicious-but once I get started snacking on it, I can’t stop!

It continued as an agricultural region, with small towns cropping up to serve the slowly growing population. One of them, Harper—often confused with nearby Harperville—held a contest to select a new name. School teacher Alice Plumer won the $25 prize and Harper changed its name to Costa Mesa in 1920, sticking with that name when the city was incorporated in 1953. As the entire west coast population expanded, Costa Mesa grew as well, drawing large numbers of military personnel during World War II and becoming home for their families during the post-war period. Today, Costa Mesa is an attractive suburban community, home to the Pacific Symphony, the South Coast Repertory Theater and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The OC Fair & Event Center is also in Costa Mesa and is the site of the annual Orange County Fair, one of the largest in the United States, attracting more than a million visitors each year.

Coachella Valley Desert Empire Once a part of an enormous inland sea, Southern California’s Coachella
growth of vacation homes, winter residences and golf/tennis resorts.
Valley is today an amalgam of sparkling cities, brilliant green golf courses,
Visitors escaping brutal winters found the 350 days of sunshine and mild
untouched expanses of desert and snow-topped mountains with palm-
temperatures of the desert winter much to their liking and many retirees
studded scenic canyons. The valley’s nine cities include some of the world’s
settled there. The Coachella Valley population of 443,401 (2014) more than
most notable resort destinations: Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot
doubles in the winter and the local economy is augmented by a yearly influx
Springs, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Palm Springs and
of 3.5 million conventioneers and tourists.
Rancho Mirage. The earliest residents of the Coachella Valley were indigenous Shoshonean peoples who became known as the Agua Caliente band of the Cahuilla Indians. They lived in canyon camps and villages throughout the region for as long as 5,000 years. In 1823, Captain José Romero and his party camped at hot springs—agua caliente—on their search for a route between the Pacific Ocean and the Colorado River. In 1853 the area was surveyed and eventually divided into one-mile square sections. Alternate odd-numbered sections were deeded to the Southern Pacific Railroad and by 1876 Los Angeles and Indio were linked by rail. With the discovery of artesian wells, agriculture flourished, with date palm
