Q: What has been your biggest challenge to date? A: Gardenias have never shipped successfully by air before. We had to ship to ourselves for six months to perfect the process. We were incredibly fortunate in our journey as an experiential luxury startup, primarily because we received phenomenal press starting in our first couple months of business. We identified a spectacular investor and partner from Southern California on our customer list, and were able to commit to the crops we have today, open offices in San Francisco and build a brand we are proud to be a part of. Q: How would you describe High Camp gardenias’ California style? A: Untied chic – raw and soulful – from the heart Q: Recently, my boyfriend sent me a box. I was so impressed with the presentation and how beautiful the blooms arrived. What goes into the shipping process? A: There are many things coming together that we worked for six months to perfect. When I lived in Hawaii, I had 12 varieties of gardenias in my yard, and spent endless hours in my garden working with the flowers. I lived with the flowers daily, and when I returned to California, I searched for a way to replicate that experience. Q: What is the best climate for growing gardenias in California? A: Gardenias grow beautifully in California climates. Coastal or wine country are optimal, in moderate sun. Q: I’m a weekend gardener and have two mature gardenia bushes; they are my biggest challenge, they never bloom and I coddle them the most, and still no blooms. What am I doing wrong? A: It is possible the bushes are old. Gardenia bushes have a lifecycle, and at around two years, they move into peak blooming period; by five, they begin to slow down. Q: Can you describe the feeling you hope your customers have when they receive a box of California-grown High Camp gardenias? A: High Camp touches the recipient on many levels. In creating the product, I am always looking to lift the charming and simple to luxury by giving it importance and intent. It elevates the things that move us on a soulful level, and the combination touches us in a memorable way. Our High Camp customers are incredibly passionate and effusive about the experience. Because the packaging is airtight, when the lid is lifted, the fragrance is spectacular. Taking the flowers from the box and floating them in personal bowls and vases brings the recipient into the experience. The flowers are touched by individual style, expression of self. There is great joy in bringing nature into your surroundings. We hope that those who encounter our flowers enjoy them as deeply as we do.
