angelo custode By Ahmed Al- Ashab “Life is a beautiful struggle.” Choosing to think that on a daily basis is my utmost motivation that keeps me trudging the road to success... Some may think to keep a consistant postive mindset is not easy to acheive. Well, nothing comes easy and if does, then it doesn’t last a long time. I like to think it’s rather simple than easy, it is as simple as living the moment, regardless of what’s going on around me, doing what I’m supposed to be doing and being honest with myself and addmitting to myself what’s good for me and what’s not, even if I do what I’m not supposed to be doing, being honest with myself and no one else, is what gets me to reach doing what’s good for me in the end. It’s ok to go through downs, but there are alwasy ups. Not reacting based on feelings or certain events that occur in my daily life, helped me give myself a chance to change the way my brain works, and yes, it is possible to do that! So it is as simple as a choice. What I choose to believe and do on a daily basis makes me what I am with time. So you decide, the choice is always yours and that is what freedom is.

MANDELA AN ASTONISHING MAN

Chris Moncrieff / Press association / The Interview People

As the world comes together to mourn, and celebrate, the incredible life of Nelson Mandela, Chris Moncrieff reflects on his remarkable journey from young activist and prisoner to the man who changed history.

S

o many millions of words have been written about Nelson Mandela, and so many more millions are surely yet to be written, that it’s verging on the impossible to find much new to say about a man whom many people seriously regard as eligible for sainthood.

Whatever words are used, however, their ultimate purpose and conclusion is the same - that Mandela was a true hero of his time and, while his loss is great, his legacy is even greater. One of the most astonishing things about this astonishing man is the way that his critics suddenly changed their tune after his release from in prison.

Indeed, on Thursday, December 5, within hours of his death aged 95, tributes began flooding in from all over the world, and mourners gathered in the streets outside his home in Johannesburg.

Mandela first went on trial in the late Fifties for treason, a few years after he’d qualified as a lawyer and played a part in setting up South Africa’s first black law firm. He was acquitted, but in early 1960, the police had killed 69 protesters

Mandela in Sharpeville and, fearing retaliation, the government had banned the African National Congress (ANC). The organization formed a military wing, led by Mandela. Two years on, he was arrested again, this time for attempting to leave the country illegally and incitement to strike. While in prison, along with seven others, he was charged with sabotage and, in 1964, handed a life sentence. It was probably at this point that he was in the greatest peril of facing execution. For the first 18 years of his imprisonment, he was incarcerated in Robben Island, and then in Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town. As time went on, pressure mounted for an end to the apartheid regime. In 1990, President F W de Klerk finally lifted the ban on the ANC and, that same year, in the February, after 27 years in prison, Mandela was freed. Not everybody had supported the campaign for his release. In fact, put simply, some critics had regarded him as little more than an anti-apartheid terrorist who was lucky to escape the gallows in his youth. But they changed their tune when, on television, they watched live coverage of he and his wife, Winnie, greeting cheering crowds. From that day on, Mandela displayed not a shred of bitterness or resentment towards those responsible for throwing him into jail. It was that absence, on his part, of any malign thoughts, which suddenly persuaded those who, until that point, had vilified him, that here was a great man. It was incredible that Mandela, who had been shut off from the world for virtually half a lifetime, should emerge totally devoid of self-pity or rancor. His unmistakable quavery voice may have belied his unquenchable appetite finally to kill off apartheid, which, at the time of his release, was already in its death throes. His ardor had not diminished one iota. It was President F W de Klerk who’d ordered his release, a step towards the dismantling of apartheid. His decision was probably not made in the interests of humanity, but more likely because he and his colleagues feared mass unrest in South Africa, and opprobrium abroad, if Mandela had died in prison. Once free, Mandela, by now in his early seventies, immediately embarked on a series of nationwide speeches.

He and President F W de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and, the following year, in a true mark of change for South Africa, for the first time ever people of any race were permitted to vote in democratic elections. Mandela became the nation’s first black President. He helped to establish a constitution, which was acceptable (although not always with open arms) to every political group in the country except the most extreme Afrikaners. In the space of four years, he managed to achieve a peaceful transition to multicultural rule, something that even his sternest critics had to accept, because of the hostility of the world outside South Africa towards the continuation of a policy of apartheid. As the years went on, as well as changing history in his own country, Mandela became a figure of great fondness, all across the world. Pomposity and bombast were foreign to his nature. He delivered his speeches in plain, straightforward language and never resorted to histrionics, and yet he could sway an audience better than any politician I have ever seen. The acclaim - verging on adoration - which he enjoyed was enhanced by his salty wit and sense of humor. Once he said, in reference to his own position: “In our country, you have to go to prison first, and then become President.” And when, about a decade ago, he visited Westminster to address the Houses of Parliament in Westminster Hall, he told the then Speaker, Betty Boothroyd, “When I enter the pearly gates, the first thing I will do is join the local branch of the African National Congress”. It was on that same visit that Mandela, who by then was a little shaky on his legs, was told in advance to be extremely careful about descending the steps in Westminster Hall. His response was to head there secretly at 6 a.m. that morning to see for himself where the perils lay. In the end, in front of the huge audience, Mandela gingerly descended the steps hand-in-hand with Boothroyd - so a calamity was averted. World leaders would fall over each other to be seen in his company. They concluded that a photograph of a politician shaking hands with Mandela and included in

future general election literature was a sure-fire vote-winner. Indeed, one of the first things that David Cameron did on being elected Conservative Party leader was to fly to South Africa seemingly for no other purpose than to have his photograph taken with Mandela. This explanation for this there-and-back trip has never been denied. And I once witnessed Alastair Campbell, who was Tony Blair’s spin doctor, roundly and loudly rebuking some people who started to chat during a Mandela speech. Mandela’s smile was rarely absent from his face. But there were occasions when it would disappear, if only temporarily. One such occasion was when he described George W Bush as “A President who can’t think properly”, or Tony Blair as “the United States foreign minister”. He was no less grim when, during his trial for treason, he said he was prepared to die for the principle of a free South Africa. In the place of that famous smile, there appeared what has been described as “a glint of steel”. It is difficult to think of anybody, politician or otherwise, who had greater moral authority in the 20th century, with the possible exception of Mahatma Gandhi. Nelson Mandela will surely go down in history as one of the most remarkable people ever to have set foot on the planet. He was, without doubt, the savior of South Africa and a beacon of hope to millions of people around the world. His memory is indelible.

Failure

5 Tech-

Startup Mistakes

the market

Many small businesses start out as an idea having belief that customers need this service or product. That’s the goal right? To create value in any form or way, in which customers would pay for. Up to to this point, all these ideas and visions are hypothesis, and untested ideas. Facts live outside the office, where your customers and clients work and live. And that’s where you need to go. It’s extremely easy to develop an application or to create a website, but knowing exactly what your customers need is quite challenging and many businesses fail to put in the time and effort to do so. Lesson: Leave the comfort of your office and get outside to know your customers.

Trying to create the wrong results

2

The most crucial mistake most business do is not creating a Minimal Viable Product, or an MVP. They spend years perfecting every detail of their website or application and discover they were either too late in the market or made an error in targeting their customer base. Instead of being lean and launch with an MVP, they spend thousands of KDs and years perfecting their business. Try to build as little as possible while delivering the maximum value to your customers. In doing so, not only do you test out your product/service but most importantly, people know you exist. You can always validate your learning and create better versions and updates for your business later on. Lesson: Build as little as possible while delivering maximum value.

Assuming the product

will sell itself

Your website might sell the most amazing products, and offer valuable services, but if people don’t know that you exist, you won’t sell anything. Nothing will generate more business to your website than wordof-mouth. Cultivating a loyal customer base to generate such a buzz requires more than just relying on one form of marketing.

Businesses often make the mistake of focusing on the bottom line, driving their entire effort and business model to increase their profits rather than focusing on growing their business. There is no one right metric to use for your business, and figuring out what exactly to measure is more of an art than a science and usually specific to each business. But generally, focus on growing your business and worry about making money later on. Lets not forget that Facebook bought the famous photo sharing application Instagram in 2012 for $1 Billion. At that time Instagram had 30 Million users and hadn’t generated a single dollar in revenues.

Lesson: Explore all marketing methods.

Lesson: Focus on growing your business, not your profit.

Businesses often think that rock bottom prices will generate skyrocketing sales. It doesn’t usually work that way unless your customer asks for it. Before making commitments and dredging it for a long period of time, do your homework. First, Calculate your costs and make sure you come up with a margin you feel comfortable with. Second, test out the prices to selected clients and customers and see first hand what your customers think. Most importantly assess what your customers value the most and will be willing to pay for. There is no harm in creating iterations and pivots to your business model. It’s encouraged. Lesson: Price according to the value you offer to your customers.

Key Questions

for F1 Next Season

CAN ANYONE STOP RED BULL/ SEBASTIAN VETTEL?

WILL THE NEW REGULATIONS PRODUCE EXCITING RACING?

WILL TIRES STILL BE A BIG FACTOR NEXT SEASON AND SHOULD THEY BE?

Red Bull start next season as favorites. No question. They are at the peak of their game. They have a stable management, the best designer, loads of money and a quadruple world champion driver. That said, they can be knocked off their perch. Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes are not there to make up the numbers. They have deep pockets, too, and with the biggest regulation changes in a generation coming up in 2014, the opportunity is there for someone to swoop in.

This is a big question and one to which no one knows the answer. I have been through engine regulation changes before but nothing quite as dramatic as next season’s switch to 1.6–liter turbos allied to vastly more potent energy recovery systems. Some fans are worried that it might become an ‘efficiency’ formula rather than an ‘all–out racing’ formula, but let’s wait and see. I think there may be some reliability issues at first but as teams get used to the new power units, we will see them push harder and harder.

Pirelli’s tires provided the biggest deciding factor this year. Red Bull, and in particular Vettel, got the most out of them. Next year the power units will play a much bigger role but there is no reason to suggest the tire issues we saw this year will go away. With more torque, there will be a lot more stress on the rear tires. But again, it is a big unknown. As a result of F1 politics, Pirelli has not even been able to test its 2014 tires yet. So I predict more controversy.

CAN HAMILTON ADAPT TO THE NEW REGULATIONS, SEE OFF ROSBERG AND CLAIM HIS SECOND TITLE?

IS BUTTON OVER THE HILL AND CAN MCLAREN BOUNCE BACK FROM THEIR ANNUS HORRIBILIS?

HOW WILL ALONSO V RAIKKONEN PAN OUT AT FERRARI?

Yes, yes and yes. Lewis Hamilton is a world–class driver and I have seen nothing to suggest that he is incapable of adapting. His win in Hungary proved that he could work the tires, drive quickly and sensibly, and claim wins in this formula. As Hamilton’s team–mate, Nico Rosberg has been a handful for him – perhaps more than many people expected – and the German clearly enjoys the mental challenge of this new style of racing. But I am sure that if Mercedes give Lewis a car with which he is comfortable, he can win his second title.

There is no question in my mind that Jenson still has it. He is 33, one of the fittest drivers on the grid, and as soon as he has had a sniff of a result – like he did in Brazil – he has been right on his game. But McLaren are a mighty team, they have a great facility and pots of money. Both they, and JB, can bounce back and it will be fascinating to see how Jenson fares against his rookie teammate Kevin Magnussen. Who is to say that the 2014 regs might not suit youngsters such as Magnussen at McLaren or Toro Rosso’s 19–year–old Dany Kvyat?

Everyone in the paddock is looking forward to this contest. My hunch is that Fernando will have too much over the course of the season. He is embedded in Ferrari, speaks Italian and has no weaknesses as a driver. That said, he did tie on points with Lewis during their season together at McLaren and lost his cool in the process. Kimi does not do the political stuff so I do not think this relationship will be as volatile. I expect Fernando to prevail though.

ADIDAS UNVEILS

BRAZUCA: THE OFFICIAL

MATCH BALL OF THE 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP BRAZIL™

field

Design of brazuca inspired by vibrant colors, passion and heritage of Brazil. The ball was revealed with a spectacular 3D light projection launch event held at the iconic Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro. brazuca was named back in September 2012, following a public vote in Brazil involving 1 million football fans; the name “brazuca” is an informal local term which means “Brazilian”, or to describe the Brazilian way of life. The colors and ribbon design of the ball panels symbolize the traditional multicolored wish bracelets worn in the country (fita do Senhor do Bonfim da Bahia), in addition to reflecting the vibrancy and fun associated with football in Brazil. brazuca went through a thorough testing process over a two and a half year period involving more than 600 of the world’s top players, and 30 teams in 10 countries across three continents, making it the most tested ball ever by adidas and ensuring that it is suited to all conditions. Clubs involved in testing included AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Palmeiras and Fluminese. Players involved in the process included global football stars Leo Messi, Iker Casillas, Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Zinedine Zidane. The ball has already been tested in competitive international matches at the FIFA U-20 World Cup™ with a different print design, and was also used in a friendly match between Sweden and Argentina in February 2013. The technology incorporated into the bladder and carcass of brazuca is identical to the Tango 12 (UEFA Euro 2012™), Cafusa (FIFA Confederations Cup 2013), and the ever-popular UEFA Champions League™ Official Match Ball. However, a new structural innovation with a unique symmetry of six identical panels alongside a different surface structure will provide improved grip, touch, stability and aerodynamics on the pitch. brazuca has been thoroughly tested to meet and exceed all FIFA metrics for an official match ball, ensuring top performance for every condition. adidas has called on players and fans to “Love Me or Lose Me” with the unveiling of brazuca as part of its “All In or Nothing” World Cup campaign. adidas is launch-

ing @brazuca on Twitter, where fans will be able to track the build-up to the FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil through the eyes of the ball as it travels the world and offers an alternative take on the game. brazuca will visit footballing nations, meet players and celebrities, and take part in major cultural events before landing in Brazil for the first game in June, and will be tweeting all the way. Brazilian star Dani Alves said: “My first impression of brazuca is of a ball that is fantastic and we’re going to have a lot of fun with it. adidas has created an incredible-looking ball fitting for a tournament as big as the FIFA World Cup. Most importantly, it plays well on the ground and in the air. I’m sure all the players will love it. It’s increased my levels of excitement even further and I honestly cannot wait for the opening game!” FIFA World Cup™ winning Spanish captain Iker Casillas said: “brazuca has a stunning design that feels inspired by Brazil. Now the ball has been launched the tournament feels a lot closer. I’m looking forward to playing in Brazil with a great ball. Hopefully with brazuca we can get the same result as in 2010.” The launch of brazuca marks the next phase of adidas’ “All in or Nothing” 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ campaign, following the launch of seven national federation FIFA World Cup™ kits and the Samba Collection, a Brazilian-themed football boot collection. The FIFA World Cup™ is

the world’s largest football event and the ultimate platform for the adidas state-ofthe-art apparel, hardware and footwear. adidas has made every FIFA World Cup™ ball since 1970, and recently extended the partnership with FIFA until 2030, including the supply of the official match ball. brazuca is available to purchase globally now in selected adidas retail outlets, associated stockists. Ronaldo

Success in Brazil

If a country has ever been picked up and carried across oceans to another continent, it was Portugal in Sweden recently. The clue was Ronaldo’s goal in the first leg (he scored all of his country’s four over the two fixtures). His diving header in the 1–0 win in Lisbon expressed a sense of destiny. Ronaldo has reached the transcendent state where great players are in charge of their own plot. You could see it in his face, his movements, and his determination to sweep Sweden out of his path.

Portguese capped glorious year against Sweden to suggest he can carry his nation to World Cup glory. A good player can only hope to win a vital game with his talent. A great one can decide to. Zlatan Ibrahimovic raised Sweden to the cusp of World Cup qualification. Cristiano Ronaldo lifted Portugal right on to the gilded stage.

Ronaldo has always had one advantage over Lionel Messi, his rival for the title of world maestro. Unlike his Argentine counterpart, who has always bathed in adulation, Ronaldo has reached the age of 28 with something to kick against. Barcelona were superior to Real Madrid for a long time. Argentina are a bigger football power than Portugal. Messi’s personality is easier to warm to. Ronaldo, though, is now hurdling all these obstacles of perception and reality in the style of the game’s No 1 thoroughbred.

Could Seal Legacy with

Ronaldo 4, Ibrahimovic 2 is a neat aggregate of the difference between brilliant and immortal. Forced to choose, the majority of us would rather see Ronaldo glow in Brazil’s summer light than Ibrahimovic, though both would have been preferable. In language, culture and playing styles, Portugal are natural qualifiers for this World Cup, and Ronaldo is needed on those pitches, where the two big South American giants are expected to call the shots. Sweden’s nemesis has self–applied a badge: “I’m Cristiano and I’m here to help.” After his fifth hat–trick of the season he told his country’s broadcasters: “I know Portugal needed me in these matches and I showed that I am here.” This statement conveys a mix of personal and patriotic intent. At 28, in his prime, Ronaldo simply had to be true to his own virtuosity by finding a way to deliver it to football’s spiritual homeland in June. Second: he knows there is a special luster attached to the role of national magician, as there was for Eusebio before him.

field Portugal are a connoisseur’s team. They are a bottle of port to England’s pint of stout. But their potential is unfulfilled. They finished third in the 1966 World Cup and were semi–finalists in Germany 40 years later. On the continent they were beaten by Spain on penalties in the semi–finals of Euro 2012 and turned over by Greece on their own soil in the final of Euro 2004. A 57th–minute goal by Angelos Charisteas at the Estadio da Luz condemned the young Ronaldo to his first great disappointment in the international arena. That game, which produced a head– shaking outcome, seemed to confirm the curse of the ‘golden generation’, under which a Portugal team adorned by Luis Figo, Rui Costa and Joao Pinto found the conversion of youthful promise into senior international honors beyond them. For years the idea took root that Portuguese football was a pretty sideshow that would always be bulldozed by more organized and ruthless nations.

Ronaldo’s rampant form for club and country raises the tantalizing possibility that his talent could carry Portugal all the way to the final in Brazil, and perhaps even to victory, much as Diego Maradona’s did for Argentina. A caveat is that better–resourced countries than Sweden will not allow him to counter– attack with the freedom he was granted in Solna, where all three of his goals were scored on the break, and with exquisite concentration. Tournament football is hardly daunting to him. He has already scored in two World Cups, three European Championships and the 2004 Olympics in Athens. His career haul now is 401 goals, with 226 of them coming in 216 games for Real Madrid. And the recent hat–trick brought him level with Pauleta on 47 goals for Portugal. The gulf in class between Ronaldo and the former player he shares that record with is vast. His tally for 2013 alone is 66 and he has scored 13 times in six outings since Sepp Blatter, the Fifa president, expressed a preference for Messi as the Ballon d’Or winner. If Ronaldo failed to win this year’s ballot the whiff of injustice would have permeated the game for a generation. There can be no withholding of recognition after a year like this one. Mostly the acknowledgement needs to be made that Ronaldo is now winning games on his own both for Real Madrid and Portugal. This is an immense and rare kind of power. It allowed him to say in effect to his Portugal team–mates: “I’m going to Brazil. I need to be there. And you’re welcome to come with me, provided you put the ball where I need it. I’ll do the rest.”

Good players want to be at World Cups. Great players refuse to miss out. This logic will probably never work for Gareth Bale, with Wales, just as it failed to apply with George Best and Northern Ireland. Hardly surprising, on either count. But Portugal are a big enough vehicle for Ronaldo, who made his decision in those two games against Sweden. Brazil’s World Cup would not start without him.

Three Crucial Goals •Tuesday Feb 13, Madrid Real Madrid v Manchester United

Ronaldo showed his athleticism when outjumping Patrice Evra to head Real’s equalizer after Danny Welbeck had opened the scoring at the Bernabéu. The remarkable aspect of this goal was the height Ronaldo attained for the header. •Friday Nov 15, Lisbon Portugal v Sweden

Ronaldo settled a tense World Cup play–off first leg with a diving header. He escaped defender Martin Olsson and, despite the risk of a boot in the face, won the ball and the game for his country. •Tuesday Nov 19, Stockholm Sweden v Portugal Joao

Moutinho’s pass was a crucial aspect but Ronaldo’s blistering pace, with which he escaped Olsson once again, enabled him to break into the penalty area, where he beat Andreas Isaksson with a searing left– foot shot into the far corner.

All-New Macan Takes

Porsche into New Territory World premiere for the compact SUV from Porsche. he all-new Macan signifies Porsche’s pioneering steps into the compact SUV segment and is poised to set new standards in the field of driving dynamics and enjoyment, both on and off road. The sporty DNA of the Macan, as with all Porsche vehicles, is immediately recognizable in the design. The Sports Utility Vehicle is unrivalled in its flat and broad profile on the road. The wrap-around bonnet and gently sloping roofline accentuate the overall impression of sporty elegance and powerful dynamics. Many of the design elements have been taken from other Porsche sports cars and enhanced for the Macan. Three models comprise the Macan product range at market launch. The Macan S is equipped with a 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine delivering 340 hp and also features an active all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled, map-controlled multi-plate clutch. This allwheel drive is fitted on all Macan models. From the outset the Macan will boast the Porsche (PDK) which transfers power as required and almost free of interruption in tractive force. This enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds (or 5.2 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package fitted). The vehicle reaches a top speed of 254 km/h, and its NEDC fuel consumption figures are between 9.0 and 8.7 litres/100 km, which corresponds to a CO2 emissions level of between 212 and 204 g/km. The Macan S Diesel is the economical long-distance runner of the three Macan models. Its 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine achieves NEDC fuel consumption figures of between just 6.3 and 6.1 litres/100 km, which corresponds to a CO2 value of between 164 and 159 g/km. Nevertheless, the Macan S Diesel accelerates from 0 to 100 km in just 6.3 seconds (or 6.1 seconds with the Sport Chrono package fitted) thanks to its 258-hp engine, and achieves a top speed of 230 km/h. As the top derivative in the Macan model line, the Macan Turbo is set to be the most powerful vehicle in the compact SUV segment. The 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine, which is being used in a Porsche model for the very first time, achieves an unrivalled 400 hp and catapults the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. With the Sport Chrono package fitted, this speed can be reached in just 4.6 seconds. Although the top speed is 266 km/h, the Macan Turbo delivers NEDC fuel consumption figures of between just 9.2 and 8.9 litres/100 km, which equates to a CO2 value of between 216 and 208 g/km. A glance at the performance specifications reveals that the Macan has been designed with agility in mind. The range of equipment fitted on the Macan as standard is extensive, and includes the all-wheel drive, PDK, multi-function sport steering wheel with shift paddles, large wheels, high-performance audio system and an electrically operated tailgate. The Macan features the air suspension system as the only vehicle in its segment and it comes as standard. The list of optional special equipment offers further highlights, such as the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) system, which has been specially tailored to the Macan.

When

Meets Safety

GulfRun. When you think of car racing and speeding through life in the fast lane one thing might pop into mind, Formula One. But here in Kuwait, I personally can only think of one thing…GulfRun, Iman Abuasba writes. During a two-day event held in early January at 360 Mall, an array of cars were being showcased to the public before their participation of this year’s GulfRun9 competition that took place in Bahrain at the Bahrain International Circuit during January 23-24. Whether you’re into motorsports or not, the details and precision that go into driving one of the cars at an extreme speed, in addition to other drivers in their cars going just as fast as you are is a little heart throbbing no matter how much of an adventurer or adrenaline seeker you are. Getting the chance to get near some of the cars alone made me a bit hesitant. But that is obviously because I do not race for a living. Aziz Al-Mudhaf, CEO and founder of GulfRun explained that, “our vision and aim is to provide people with the necessary proficiency that it takes to drive safely and responsibly. We want to provide a place where automobile enthusiasts who are interested in racing can do so after learning the proper instructions in order to qualify for the ability to perform on the circuits and in a safe environment.” To say that these drivers just get into their cars and race off is an immature way of looking at the whole perspective of things. It takes a lot of practice, talent, awareness and accuracy to start off, let alone actually winning a trophy for something of this stature. “What we want to do is to get people off the streets who are doing this and onto the racetracks so that everyone is safe, even the driver,” Aziz added.

Come and meet with the drivers and check out the vehicles participating in GulfRun. These Kuwaiti enthusiasts for motosports have helped raise awareness and professionalism to young drivers who might have dreams of making this their profession. For the men behind GulfRun to organize and take initiative to create and generate this type of driver safety and offer such incredible competing opportunities shows a tremendous amount of respect and value not only for the drivers, but everyone around them.

“No money is worth

sacrificing your

happiness”

Elvish Charm

feature It’s so nice to see you back in action in Hollywood. You kind of went away for a while after “Lost” ended, why was that? I really needed a break after “Lost”. I was tired, I was exhausted. I was riddled with anxiety during the TV show, I suffered from insomnia. Sounds like your job made you physically sick? You know, I am an A-type personality. With that comes this urge for perfection. I used to constantly scrutinize myself; I felt a lot of pressure, every day. And that was difficult for me. It gave me a lot of health problems. That’s why you needed a break from Hollywood? Yes. I needed to step away from it all. I didn’t want to be like that for the rest of my life. No amount of money or fame could have changed that. No money is worth sacrificing your happiness and your health. And you became a mother as well… Yes, I did. I became a mom as well. Did that change your perspective on life? Absolutely. The fact that you go home at the end of the day to a newborn baby helped me a lot. There is no time to scrutinize your performance. I can’t waste my energy on that. What made you fall in love with acting again?

Are you like that in your personal life as well? I like to be around people that like to have fun, that are light and not take themselves so seriously. I like down to earth people.

So, can we expect to see you more often again on TV and/or the big screen? I fell in love with acting again, and yes, I am currently looking at other projects. I think you will see me again.

But you are a big movie star… It comes down to this: We play house for a living, that’s all we really do. There needs to be trust, that’s important. It’s the same in a relationship. It takes a lot of energy. My average day is between 14 and 20 hours. And I’d rather spend the day with humor and feeling good. Do you still suffer from insomnia? No, I don’t. My son, my little bubble of bliss can be acknowledged for that. I can sleep very well now. No more time for insomnia for this mama. How do you balance life as a working mom? My job was made more difficult as a mom. I started working on this film when my child was three months old. I was still a nursing mama. What was the biggest challenge then? It’s hard for me to hang on to calories. I need to eat a lot to hang on to my calories. And my son had a great appetite. He wanted to eat all the time. So I was trying to feed him and to feed me. I ate these insanely big meals, but people didn’t understand. My baby was huge. And he was hungry all the time.

Peter Jackson did. This man is a genius. No matter how serious your character is, no matter how dire the scene there is no better elixir than laughter. And Peter knows that. You need to laugh to be able to function well? Look, Peter Jackson has zero respect for the craft of acting. It’s wonderful. There is no pressure. He goofs around. When people treat acting like a sacred art, that’s like saying you are about to perform magic. And I have no clue how to perform magic. I find that terrifying.

things to know

ProveLov Your e

E E

very girl wants to be spoilt. No matter what you may think, we are not always certain that you love us. Telling us once in the relationship does not give it lifelong validity. Your gestures of love expire, and they expire quickly.

It’s not merely because we are attention seeking creatures, which to a certain extent…is true. But it involves more of us being insecure, so there is a need to be constantly reminded of your love, more specifically, that we are still your one and only love, and your heart belongs to us. So forget everything you think you know and follow these steps to melt her heart over and over.

1 2

LISTEN. Believe it or not, this is the best way to say I love you. I hate to break the news, but your level of love purely depends on how good you make us feel, proving you know just what to do and are willing to do it to make us happy. You know she loves to express and share, a concept you may not be familiar with. Listen to her fully with all your heart and allow her to be herself. This is not advice; it’s an order! Don’t underestimate the extent to which she needs it.

Hold her hand. Do it in times she least expects it. While you are in the car, walking from one place to another, or simply in the same room. It takes minimum effort to extend your hand and show her that holding her is essential to your comfort. You now have the opportunity in any situation to let her feel connected to you and assure her blessed heart that she is present in your mind always. In the long run, she will feel she can trust you.

3 4 5

“I love you because.” You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that you should say those three little words all the time, but instead of just saying, “I love you” tell her a different reason as to why you love her each time. Convince her that your love extends to every aspect of her and that you are in fact noticing all the little efforts and cute stuff she does, no matter how manly and unfocused you are. The more detail you show her you notice, the higher you climb on the perfect husband and/ or boyfriend ladder. Call just because. If she didn’t have a pretty voice, chances are you are unable to get to this point of being in a relationship. Enjoy her voice just for the sake of it. Call her randomly throughout the day, while you are at work, or running errands, just because. If you place this phone call while you are with your friends… Then you will really earn some serious husband and/or boyfriend points. Seriously. No joke.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but any gift is just as valuable. Get her something a few times a week. Wait, don’t run away just yet and hear me out. It doesn’t mean you have to buy her anything expensive, or even spend money at all. But since the beginning of time, giving has been the ultimate form of expression of love. Whatever it is, a meal, a card, or even your time. Show her that you are willing to make a gesture of love as often as you can. This point is pure gold; tattoo it on your hand as a cheat sheet. After all, you know what they say…”happy wife, happy life.” This also applies to non marital, boyfriend and girlfriend relationships, if you want to keep her that is.

to its Limits By Circuit+ What is CrossFit? “CrossFit itself is defined as that which optimizes fitness (constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity). CrossFit is also the community that spontaneously arises when people do these workouts together. In fact, the communal aspect of CrossFit is a key component of why it’s so effective,” as defined by Crossfit HQ.

Another Definition: CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program designed to help people gain a common sense of broad and general fitness. CrossFit programming concentrates on constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity to achieve overall physical fitness, so people are prepared for any physical challenge. Greg Glassman, founder of CrossFit, says: “Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, and presses to handstand. Pirouettes, flips, splits and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc., hard and fast. Five or six days a week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.”

Metcon: •20 min EMOM •Odd-Sprint 100m •Even 10 pushups/5 over Box jump (or object) EMOM stands for Every Minute On (the) Minute. So in this case you would sprint 100m on minutes 1, 3, 5 etc. and perform 10 push ups and jump over an object 5 times on minutes 2, 4, 6 etc. In the Gym 1. Filthy Fifty – A CrossFit staple, the Filthy 50 is a brutal series of taxing exercises that’s likely to seem endless if you’ve never done it before. The circuit includes 50 reps of 10 different exercises, all done as quickly as possible. Do 50 Box Jumps with a 24-inch box, 50 Jumping Pull-ups, 50 Kettlebell Swings, 50 Walking Lunge Steps, 50 Knees to Elbows, 50 reps of Push Press with 45 pounds, 50 Back Extensions, 50 Wallballs using a 20-pound ball, 50 Burpees (dropping all the way to the floor), 50 Double-Unders. 2) Strength – Squat Clean 5x5 sets Start with the barbell on the ground and violently extend using triple extension upward receiving the barbell in the front rack position (your shoulders) and in full squat position (butt below your kness) then stand the bar up just like a front squat. Build up to a difficult but do-able set of 5.

Metcon:

Metcon (Metabolic Conditioning Workout): •12 min AMRAP •20 min OH Lunge 45/25 •10 Burpees AMRAP stands for As Many Rounds As Possible. In this WOD we have a couplet (two movements) of a walking lunge with an OH (Over the Head) carry and a Burpee. A Burpee involves dropping to the ground and getting back up as smoothly as possible. 2. Strength/Skill – Max Broad Jump Send your hips and arms back then violently extend your hips while throwing your arms. Try landing quietly (athletically) and not stomping the ground.

•Fran •21-15-9 •Thrusters •Pullups Once again we have a couplet. This time it is pairing Pull-ups with Thrusters. Pull-ups are usually performed with a gymnastics kipping motion to allow them to be performed more quickly. Thrusters are a combination of a front squat and an Overhead Press in one violent motion. 21-15-9 means that you would perform 21 Thrusters, 21 Pull-ups, and then move on to performing 15 Thrusters, 15 Pull-ups etc.

Health-To-Go This month is about having that busy life. The one that doesn’t allow any time to even think about what to eat and no time at all to exercise. Most of us do run a busy life or even when we are not really doing much, it still seems like we never find the time for anything. Usually a person with such a hectic schedule would not have time to read an article such as this. But if you are reading now then congratulations! There is hope! Hassan Al-Mosawi writes.

Before wasting any more time let’s schedule in some steps you can adopt immediately that will change the course of your habits, and with time, improving both your mental and physical health. 1.While getting ready in the morning, without scheduling any specific time, go through your plans for the day in your head. Imagining the best possible outcomes. You can do this while you brush your teeth even. This exercise trains your expectations and generally helps make you a more positive person. 2.Have a protein shake for breakfast. Want to save time and don’t have much energy to waste deciding what to eat? Get a cereal bar, or healthy snack bar ready and have it with a protein shake. This will kick-start your metabolism and keep you full for longer so you don’t resort to binging throughout the day. It will save you time and mental energy. 3.Throughout the day, be sure to take a picture of everything you eat. This will get you in the habit of keeping a diary of all your food intake. Reviewing your choices for 5 minutes at the end of the day will make you very conscious of what you eat and will push you to make better choices the next

day. Comparing day to day consumption will help show if you are on the right track. 4.Take a moment to go through your whole to do list, and find one item you can do on the move. Whether it be phone calls you have to make, or a lecture you need to listen to. Do it while walking. Instead of setting aside time to walk, merge it within one of your activities. 5.Last but not least, before sleeping, review your progress, aim for a better tomorrow and use your imagination to realize what other things you could do to better your efforts.

POWER OF FOUR

SCENT OF A MAN 4 3

1 JAY-Z GOLD

A new standard of measure, Gold Jay Z is inspired by an Icon: a fragrance destined to be a legend. The scent exudes a golden freshness, perfected through a layered blend of tailored modern style and refined with a gilded, noble sensuality. It opens with the brightness of grapefruit and ginger warmed with cardamom. At the heart, a masculine vetiver and the spice of pink pepper balance the flora of lavender and violet leaf. The base of rich amber and smoky myrrh is tempered with teak wood and bourbon vanilla.

2 Cartier

Pasha Edition Noir A modern and charismatic reinterpretation of the Pasha de Cartier iconic fragrance, Pasha Edition Noire speaks to the modern yet refined man who exudes freshness and elegance while maintaining his bold aura of masculinity. Fragrance notes: Mint, Amber, and Cedarwood.

3 Tom Ford Noir

TOM FORD Noir Eau De Toilette presents a dynamic new expression of Noir as pure citrus oils and herbal notes come to the forefront, brightened and heightened in their impact. An olfactory portrait of cool and unstudied confidence that hints at carnal sensuality beneath the surface, it offers a fresh and energized way to wear the TOM FORD Noir fragrance.

4 Davidoff Game Intense

The Game Intense was designed by perfumer Lucas Sieuzac. It belongs to the fresh aromatic woody family. A variation on the original DAVIDOFF The Game perfume, it retains the same core olfactive pyramid: a sensual and distinctive accord of Gin Fizz followed by a sophisticated heart note of textured orris and a refined base note of strong and virile blackwood. But The Game Intense adds to this unique palette a rich and powerful heart note of black patchouli essence and a very virile and leathery base note of labdanum absolute.

chopard The Race The Mille Miglia – famous vintage car race turned into legend over the years – was born in 1927 under the impetus of two young Italian, Brescia-born counts. This prestigious, epic event featuring endurance racing cars sets off every year in May from Brescia to Rome, traveling more than 1,600 km through Italy’s most beautiful landscapes. The Mille Miglia is today one of the most highly anticipated events in Italy. Combining elegance and precision, Chopard has been part of the adventure since 1988, carrying on the dream and the tradition of this illustrious annual event by celebrating each year’s race with a limited edition “Mille Miglia” watch. Taking its inspiration from the race and watch collection, the House of Chopard is now opening a new olfactory chapter with a Mille Miglia fragrance for men.

The Fragrance Seductive, sophisticated, this oriental fougère created by perfumers Olivier Polge and Bruno Jovanovic (IFF) boasts a self-assured character. The fragrance rushes forward with floral lavender notes refreshed by bergamot, while notes of Juniper berries come to accentuate the freshness. The first gear passed, and green notes of herbaceous and violet bring strength to the heart; a fresh, invigorating scent modernized by a leather and asphalt accord. As it speeds off, this heady contrast unfurls in an oriental base of amber, wood and coffee beans, leaving behind an intensely warm, addictive trail. 58 RAW

Interview with THE CHOPARD Marketing UNIVERSE How would you describe the Chopard brand and spirit? Chopard is an international prestigious jewelry house with a long history of excellence, passion and craftsmanship. In the male universe, the brand sets itself apart from others with its unique precision and know-how of Swiss watch-making traditions in a bold spirit. The Scheufele family has been involved for many years in a number of patronage and charity activities covering variety fields including research, ecology, art and culture. Specifically, Chopard has served as official partner of the Cannes Film Festival, and Chopard craftsmen have redesigned the Golden Palm award.

cess and part of Chopard’s best sellers. Therefore it was obvious that we needed to enter this passionate partnership with a fragrance. What were your main inspirations when creating Mille Miglia? The Mille Miglia Man and his passion for elegant and performing cars is our source of inspiration. From the precision and sophistication of the material used in vintage cars and watches to the beautiful landscapes of Toscana, we translated these images into scent notes to make this legendary fragrance come alive. We also used the graphic and color codes of 1000 Miglia such as the logo and the vivid red in line with the original codes. This unique spirit is the inspiration for a timeless signature fragrance for men.

How would you define Chopard Fragrances and the existing perfume line?

What core values/key words would best define this fragrance?

We have a strong Chopard female fragrance portfolio. With Mille Miglia, we want to establish a strong masculine pillar, exploring a new territory that appeals to every man: action & sportive elegance.

We wanted the fragrance to embody values of Chopard Mille Miglia watch range such as: precision, performance and elegance. On top of that, Mille Miglia Eau de Toilette is both vibrant and addictive. This very masculine scent mirrors the right balance between the tension of the race and the elegance of a man animated by vibrant sensuality.

THE CONCEPT Why did you decide to partner with Mille Miglia to create this fragrance? Chopard sponsors the Mille Miglia car race since 1988 and took this opportunity to develop a 1000 Miglia watch range, editing a new model each year. It is a suc-

Italian car race and the heritage of the watch collection. We wanted the fragrance to convey values of performance, passion and extreme precision. Perfumers chose an original & evocative asphalt violet accord. They were then able to sublimate this raw accord and compose an elegant and unique signature for Chopard by adding relief, contrast and addiction. THE MAN Who is the Mille Miglia man? Could you describe him in terms of age, values, interests, and character? Full of energy, he’s passionate about life and enjoys every challenge. Whether he is running his own business, or at the wheel of his car, his energy is compelling, his optimism contagious. Chopard 1000 Miglia is for this man with a winning attitude to Life.

How did you brief the nose? Were there any specific requirements? We asked Bruno Jovanovic and Olivier Polge to reflect the story of 1000 Miglia RAW 59

fahad almarzouq

ahad Al-Marzouq, a good friend of mine and the first name that crossed our mind to be featured on our cover. RAW magazine is about the men of Kuwait who have contributed and pushed the limitations we face in our society. Fahad has been a major player in our fashion industry, placing Kuwait on the map globally when it comes to high end fashion and design. One look at this fashion guru and you would know that living ordinarily is something he is incapable of. His personality has an even bigger impact than his style. His charming persona and friendly vibe are very inviting, making anyone want to enter the fast paced forward world of Fahad Al-Marzouq, Hassan AlMosawi writes. Tell me about the birth of the idea, you were always seen as a fashion icon in Kuwait; what made you go into designing glasses? As many people know, Khaleda and I have always been obsessed with sunglasses. The more unique the better! They can take any look to the next level. You could be wearing a simple t-shirt and jeans and take that look into high fashion status with the right pair of shades. This obsession lead us to befriend the owners at Linda Farrow who must have seen something within our outrageousness, as soon after they asked us to design a line of sunglasses for them. We jumped at the opportunity to work with them and knew we had to make an iconic line.

cover story

Why the cat eyes? The idea of cat eyes is very personal with us. Within our friendship we have always loved the theme of cats and on many occasions discussed our love for feline symbolism, the regal yet edgy quality that is desired by us all. The unique feature of the glasses is that they have double the lenses as traditional glasses. As with anything we both do, we needed to push the envelope of what is seen as the norm. Tell me more about the chemistry between you and Khaleda, it seems like you two have an incredible bond. We have been friends for over 10 years. We clicked early on and our friendship has been a treasure for us both. The two of us are designers and in comparison to others, we tend to be a bit out of most peoples comfort zone. Our edgy personalities have helped us inspire each other’s imagination and make sense of craziness that is involved when trying to take fashion to the next level. We are two peas in a very over the edge pod. Your sunglasses have made quite the impact in the fashion industry, is this a one off project? This is just the beginning. Without mentioning details, we have a line coming up in 2015 that will make history in the sunglasses world. We have really pushed limits with this one and are anticipate the line becoming the first of a larger global movement of how people view sunglasses in the future. It’s going to be big. If you had to dress from only one designer, who would it be? Balmain! Their edginess suits my taste, yet their range of clothing I believe can satisfy each and every occasion. What’s your favorite clothing item, what can really make or break an outfit? Sunglasses and shoes! Spend 5 dollars on your whole outfit, yet if you have the right shades and shoes, you can turn heads wherever you go. As for women I believe the right

bag also has a great impact on the look you are trying to pull off. What is your number one winter essential this season? Fur. It’s my number one essential every winter. Which is your favorite type of fur? I have many favorites, each with a unique feel and for a different occasion. Matching furs with outfits is my specialty. I can’t get enough of them and have always been fascinated to the impact they have on any winter look. You have always been out of the box, a bit too forward for Kuwait, how do you handle resistance to your style? Firstly my confidence is built with the love and support which I have always received from my family. Pushing limits has been very organic to me, it’s simply me following my passion, and I don’t go out of my way to look different. But after receiving global recognition, I do feel that I must be doing something right, and I am honored by the influence my designs are getting and the support from people around, I am ready to take things to a different level. Any other projects in the making? 2015 will be a big year. Not only my collaboration with Khaleda for our new sunglasses line. I will also be launching a leather jacket line and my shoes and bag collections. I’m excited to share what’s been in the works for a while now and can’t wait to show you guys what I got up my sleeve. Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time? I think with how things are looking on an international scale, I would be relocating to one of the fashion capitals like Paris or Milan. Not only for my brand’s sake, but I think I need to be in a more fast paced society for my full potential to emerge. Being in a place as such will surely inspire more from me. Is there a certain philosophy you live your life by? Have fun in everything you do, and don’t be distracted by anyone while doing it.

A slatted shelf underneath makes it a perfect storage piece at the end of the bed or in an entryway. Also, the solid pine frame with aniline-dyed, top-grain cognac leather has been lightly distressed. The Dimensions are 54” wide x 18” deep x 18” high.

Atmos Hermès Clock

Stemming from a collaborative endeavor between Hermès, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Les Cristalleries de St. Louis, the Atmos Hermès Clock (KD 11,860) vividly demonstrates that time is a true ally: one that has enabled the three Houses to combine their expertise in order to create this 176-piece limited edition crystal clock that quite literally lives on air. The astonishing crystal sphere thus houses a unique, almost perpetual movement developed by the Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre. Since 1928, the mechanism of the Atmos clock fascinates by its exceptional mode of operation with no battery, no electric current and no winding. It lives on air by means of an ingenious principle: a hermetically sealed capsule containing a mixture of gases that expands when the temperature rises and contracts when it drops.

Patterson Leather Armchair

The exquisite top-grain leather of the Patterson Leather Armchair (KD 425) is carefully dyed to accentuate the natural variations that are unique to each hide. No artificial finishes are used to mask the leather’s natural imperfections. It features a corner-blocked kiln-dried hardwood frame, and solid foam–core seat cushion is wrapped in a down-blend and supported by high-gauge steel sinuous springs. Should you ever need to purchase a replacement cushion, you can place in an order at any time.

Sansaire Sous Vide Circulator

The Sansaire Sous Vide Circulator (KD 60) immersion circulator is the only tool you need to cook. Just place the Sansaire in a pot or basin, add water, and set your cooking temperature. The Sansaire maintains the water temperature, ensuring that your foods will cook perfectly every time without being too expensive for home use. Sometimes you want to cook a full rack of ribs; other times, you just need room for a few eggs. The Sansaire is ready for both. Clip the unit to the side of any basin, such as a stockpot or food storage container, like a Cambro. The Sansaire will perform like a champ for baths up to 6 gallons.

Dartboard Set

Perfect your bull’s eye with the wood Dartboard Set (KD 85) that’s modeled on an antique found in a London pub. It is 45” wide x 25” high x 5” deep. The case is made of poplar wood, MDF and veneer with a black painted finish. The dartboard is made out of Bristle, and features six stainless steel darts. Chalk, an eraser and mounting hardware are also included. In regards to ordering, this item is only available through the company’s website

Library Media Station

The solid oak Library Media System (KD 930 – KD 1,130) is constructed with the same care as a custom builtin. Product details include, solid oak construction, crown-molding trim, mortise-and-tenon joinery, weathered oak finish, versatile, space-saving design. It features 2 bookcases and a center media console with wire management and a single fixed shelf. Each bookcase has 3 adjustable shelves; each base cabinet has a single fixed shelf, and is equipped with pull-out trays. Bases are fitted with cast antiqued brass-finished hardware and key lock entries. The 95” Media System accommodates a TV up to 52”, and the 77” Media System accommodates a TV up to 37”.

Strand Mirrored Sideboard

Recalling the streamlined simplicity of French Art Deco furnishings, the Strand Mirrored Sideboard (KD 450) strikes a harmonious balance between understated glamour and functional design. Constructed with waterfall edges, the mirrored surfaces are aged for an antique patina that’s complemented with dark metal trim. Featuring an antiqued mirror surface, burnished metal trim, solid wood frame, and constructed with waterfall edges. Also, a cutout in the back accommodates cords for electronics.

Muir Way National Park Maps

Using clean design and a mix of colors, Muir Way National Park Maps (KD 10) have recreated the traditional National Park Map so you can either enjoy the memories of one of your greatest adventures, or fantasize about where to go next. Select any of their 22 designs and match them to the color palette of your choice for the next National Park you would like to design, plus you can choose from a range of sizes from 13 by 19, to 24 by 36, with each printed in high quality inks that are meant to last for a long time. Ratio Eight Coffee Machine

There are coffee machines that make great coffee and there are coffee machines that look great. Ratio (KD 115) is the first coffee machine that is truly both, combining form and function. Sometimes you just want a great cup of coffee without having to think about time, temperature, and other variables. Which is why Ratio has just one button and no complicated programming. The materials chosen for the Ratio machine juxtapose the precision of high tech with the irregularity of natural finishes. Die cast nickel-plated aluminum contrasts with Oregon black walnut and borosilicate glass. Ratio consistently delivers water at the ideal temperature of ~200°. Inspired by the precision of manual brewing with pour-over kettles, Ratio uses a unique showerhead design to uniformly saturate the coffee grounds. This means a more complex cup of coffee for you – without extra complexity in your routine. Hot water poured over fresh roasted coffee causes a bubbly interaction called a “bloom.” The control board of Ratio applies a bloom cycle that allows the bloom to settle down before delivering the rest of the hot water. The New York Times Archive – Horse Race – 1968 (Wall Art) A masterful example of photojournalism and artistry, this photograph captures the last leg of the grueling Belmont Stakes race in 1968. In the foreground, the favorite, Forward Pass, seems on his way to victory, but Stage Door Johnny coming up from behind will beat him down and win. And the last horse running in the distance offers artful counterpoint to Forward Pass’s legs in the very front, giving the photograph a sense of harmony and balance in the midst of frenetic moment. The New York Times Archive – Horse Race – 1968 photograph comes in 3 different sixes, 12 x 14”, 16 x 20”, 20 X 24” and is priced ranged at (KD 199 – KD 115).

36Hours in Évora

Mary Luissiana / The Daily Telegraph / The Interview People

Where to stay Special treat The gloriously restored 15th–century Convento do Espinheiro (00351 266 788 200; luxurycollection.com/evora) rises in white–washed splendor on a hill just north of the main city walls. It has 92 luxurious rooms, a beautiful chapel and a restaurant in the old stone, vaulted cocktail cellar. Doubles from KD 60. Mid–range For location, you can’t beat the Pousada de Loios (00351 266 730 070; pousadas. pt), which faces Évora’s magnificent Roman Temple. Another monastery dating from the 15th century, it has 36 monk’s cells converted into small but comfortable rooms, retaining a sense of place and history. Doubles from KD 50.

Why go now? Évora, in the Alentejo region of Portugal, comes into its own at this time of year, basking under ravishingly blue skies and brilliant sunshine. Within its old medieval walls, crisp cool air, enticing colors and flavors fill the historic centre, which is listed as a Unesco world heritage site. Chestnuts are roasted in the cobbled squares, while the leafy trees have turned a warm orange and excellent, unpretentious restaurants offer hearty dishes of local game, such as hare or wild boar, paired with rich regional drinks from the vineyards.

On a budget M’Ar de Ar Muralhas (00351 266 739 302; mardearhotels.com) has its pretty garden and pool framed by the old city walls. Its spacious, pleasant rooms are excellent value for money options. Doubles from KD 30. On arrival 7:30 p.m. Go straight to the jewel in Évora’s crown, the granite and marble Roman Temple, in Largo Conde Vila Flor, which dates from the first century and is one of the best preserved Roman Temples on the Iberian peninsula. Just off this square, newly opened Cartuxa (Rua Vasco Gama 15) is an outlet of the local drink collection, and the perfect introduction to the region’s gastronomy.

Day one 9:00 a.m. Start in the main square, Praça de Giraldo, the centre of the Unesco world heritage site. Cafés and bakeries (Pastelaria) spill on to the square from the surrounding white–washed arcades and you can enjoy an excellent Portuguese coffee and a breakfast of queijadas, bite–sized cheesecakes (KD 1), before looking at the 16th–century Church of Saint Antão and the square’s central water fountain, also from the 16th century.

*EXPERT TIP* Coffee is seriously good in Portugal at any corner café, a hangover from the days when Brazil was one of its colonies. A bica is the equivalent to an espresso and a galão similar to a latte. 10:00 a.m. Leave the square at Rua da Republica and walk down to Largo de S. Francisco and the 15th–century San Francisco Church (closed lunchtimes). Its huge structure incorporates Mudéjar elements and a Chapel of Bones (entry KD 1), where 5,000 skulls line the walls where monks contemplated the ephemeral nature of life, emphasized by the inscription over the door: “Us bones that are here, for yours we wait.”

Pause to regain your appetite, then head over to Divinus (divinus.pt). This excellent regional gourmet shop stocks black presunto, cured sheep’s cheese, honey topped with pine nuts and a good selection of drinks. But for an interactive overview on drinks, go to the Alentejo Wine Route office (Praça Joaquim António de Aguar, 20–21; vinhosdoalentejo.pt; closed Sun), a 10–minute walk across town, which gives an excellent insight into the drink selections, as well as tastings. 1:00 p.m. Just round the corner, at 45a Rua Cândido dos Reis, is the cozy Tasquina do Oliveira (00351 266 744 841), where Évora’s traditional scrambled eggs with asparagus (KD 6) is worth the stop. Wash it down with a glass of Herdade Dacalada and finish with the region’s own liqueur, poejo (pennyroyal). 3:00 p.m. Walk through the old Moorish quarter, along Rua da Mouraria and on to the University of the Holy Spirit (7). Founded by the Jesuits in 1559, its classrooms boast magnificent 18th century tiles depicting the subject taught in each room. 4:30 p.m. Wander down the artisanal shopping street, Rua 5 de Outubro. Note the pretty painted wooden furniture adorned with flowers, typical of the region, and the elegant, colorful cribs at O Cesto. Find your presents at Gente da Minha Terra, which has original, local handicrafts with a modern twist, such as sardine–shaped ceramic incense burners. 7:00 p.m. Dine at the tiny Botequim de Mouraria (Rua da Moraria 16a) (no reservations; opens for lunch at 1:00 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m.; closed Sat eve and Sunday), where the 10 seats go to the first through

free jetter the door, who will be rewarded with tasty rustic fare (about KD 10 per person). Alternatively, book at Fialho (Travessa dos Mascarenhas 16; 00351 266 703 079; restaurantefialho.com; closed Tuesdays), which has long been an institution here. Try their traditional clams (KD 12). 10:00 p.m. Walk home, admiring the floodlit, 16th– century Aqueduct of Silver Water, which runs along nearby Rua do Cano and was mentioned in Os Lusiadas, the 16th–century Portuguese epic poem by Luís Vaz de Camões.

Day two 9:00 a.m. Breakfast on local hams and cheeses in the old cloisters of the Lóios Monastery, now the Pousada (see Where to Stay), then head to Évora’s 13th–century cathedral (KD 1; closed at lunchtime). The organ, added in the 16th century, is the oldest in Portugal. Find the 15th–century stone Virgin Mary, unusually both painted and pregnant, commonly known as Our Lady of the O, due to the round form of her belly. 11:00 a.m. Located in the old Episcopal palace, the Évora Museum (at Largo Conde de Vila Flor (00351 266 702 604; museudevora. pt; open Wed–Sun 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.; entry: KD 2), covers the rich history of this city from Roman times to the Portuguese early modern period. One of its highlights is a 15th–century Flemish polyptych of the Virgin Mary’s life. Évora Checklist •If you drive from Lisbon, you will pass Montemor–o–Novo, where L’And Vineyards (l–and.com) has just won the region’s first Michelin star. •Regular trains (journey time: 80 minutes; KD 5) run from Lisboa Entrecampos station. Eco-friendly tourism might be a prevalent thing in the West, but now it’s sweeping across the world. Take, for example, the splendid sleepy resort of Vaamika Island. An eco-friendly hotel that caters to both carbon-footprint-aware travelers, and luxury-driven tourists. Situated amidst the tranquil lakes of suburban Kochi, the resort is truly a diamond in the rough. It offers a type of solitude that is not very evident in mainland India. It’s a holistic island that is uncluttered and made to fit every aspect of coziness there is for a romantic or relaxing getaway 74 RAW

The chalets are literally an all-in-one treat. They are equipped with spacious rooms, outdoor bathrooms, a sun patio, a message room with equipment, an infinity pool, a sitting area, a lush garden and even a room for a stay-in butler. All meals are supplied and included in the deal. Being eco-friendly, some of the fruits and vegetables incorporated within the meals are grown on the island itself. The service is up to par and the 20-minute boat ride to the neighboring suburbs are ready to go whenever a visitor and/or guest requests. And if that isn’t enough, the island has its own museum that many Kochi tourists visit who are not staying on the island. The modern style, in this case, does not forfeit the comfort of the space. This is truly a place not to be missed. RAW 75

I am a traveller

Mubarac

I am a traveller. I like to explore, to broaden my perspective of matters I never thought could be seen differently, and this comes from my love for understanding what makes people who they are. In my experience, it’s a combination of culture, morals, religion, and general outlook on life. These factors make the people I see in front of me when I visit a new country, city, town, village, or island. It’s the people who make the lasting impact. I know of a place. It is probably not the most known or most visited, but it’s certainly different. Special is a word I’d use. The oceans are calm and enticing, the land warm and inviting. The people that reside there, known for their generosity and trustworthiness, are a helping, supportive people. The relationships are so closely knit that the locals are bound to know one another, and the degrees of separation are far less than six. But don’t let this fool you; they’re neither small nor vulnerable. They are a mighty crowd, ambitious in nature, and courageous in spirit. They are proud ones; proud of their history, of their story, and of their stature. Their scars may sometimes be visible to those who are foreign, for they fought a gruesome war, and these things take time to fully heal. But like the phoenix that rises from the ashes, not only did they rise, but they sprung back to life; flying, soaring, past anyone’s expectations of a place that’s so little in size. They’re educated, well spoken, cultured, and are confident of their morals and ethics. They’re a people who aim high, who strive for excellence, and who will settle for nothing less. Like a falcon soaring towards the sky, you can see them rising, prospering, flourishing, and the world will see them when they spread their wings up high. I am comforted when I hear about the achievements of its youth, the triumphs of its history, the wisdom of the wise, and the beauty of its spirit. I feel this way because I see that all of this, the mixture of all traits, are what make me proud of the people I see before me, and make my heart beat when I hear of them. For they do say home is where the heart is, and I am proud to call this place my home, my Kuwait.

New La Montre Hermès Arceau Le temps suspendu Model “It’s time to dream again” The awe-inspiring Hermès Arceau Le temps suspendu collection provides a chance to experience a break, an interlude over which time has no hold. Behind a simple and playful gesture lies a complex mechanism capable of making the wearer forget time, via a subtle play of extremely sophisticated technical features. Since its launch in 2011, the collection has been extended with its latest edition, the exceptional Arceau Le temps suspendu 43mm platinum version with baguette diamonds for men - limited to 24 pieces, is now available in the Middle East. At the push of a button, the Arceau Le temps suspendu conceals time and erases it from the dial – and with that, time is suspended. Both the minute and hour hands move to almost 12 o’clock, although the movement continues its invisible march. Pressing the button once more sets time running again. To ‘play with time’ is a beautiful possibility in today’s hectic and constant time-keeping world. This incredible horological complication was developed exclusively for Hermès and is a world first. The pioneering collection has become acclaimed the world over, winning numerous awards and accolades such as ‘Watch of the Year’ 2011 as well as the prestigious Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix’s ‘Best Men’s Watch’ for the 43mm men’s piece.

It gives contemporary shape to the passage of time, furnishing the mechanical precision it deserves. Two new models joined the Pontos stables this year. Equipped with self-winding mechanisms, they each illustrate the creativity of Maurice Lacroix in their own way. A sportier model, the Pontos S Extreme is made of POWERLITER, a new alloy used exclusively by Maurice Lacroix that lends it both durability and its light weight. An active lifestyle whether in the world’s oceans, soaring above the clouds or firmly planted on terra firma, necessitates a handsome timepiece capable of withstanding the challenges posed by an adventurous wearer.

Pontos S Extreme When traditional watchmaking is combined with high-tech solutions and materials, time takes on a whole new dimension. The Pontos S Extreme impresses from the very first glance. 43 MM CLIFTON CHRONOGRAPH The power of balance An absolute concentration of power and urban chic, this latest addition to the Clifton collection by Baume & Mercier, is a self-winding chronograph, and reveals its full potential when confronted with the trials of everyday life. Its understated, dynamic design is an expression of the strength of character of the person wearing it.

84 RAW

A CHRONOGRAPH INSPIRED BY HISTORY On first sight, the trained eye will note the historic inspiration of the Clifton timepiece and in particular the hallmarks of the “golden fifties”, a period considered by watchmakers as the golden age of wristwatches. The chronograph has been thoroughly reworked by the Baume & Mercier Design Studio to demonstrate balance through every detail of its design.

CLIFTON 10123

CLIFTON 10129

CLIFTON 10130

Its complication, specially developed to measure very short intervals of time, will satisfy the highest precision requirements of various professional and leisure activities. Featuring blued hands against sun satin-finished silver dial, this model contains a turdy, durable self-winding caliber, and is mounted on an alligator skin strap with large square scales fastened by a triple folding buckle with safety catch. This elegant watch will satisfy urbanites in search of a timepiece poised to triumph when confronted with any test.

This chronograph has an undeniably traditional character, featuring a sun satinfinished silver dial to contrast with its golden hands and golden digits. The effect is further accentuated by a full grain brown alligator skin strap with large square scales, fastened by a triple olding buckle with safety catch. The most precious and undoubtedly the most «vintage» of the collection, this 43 mm steel watch contains a self-winding caliber known for its sturdiness. It will be the obvious choice for ficionados in search of a precise timepiece that age cannot alter.

With its 43 mm steel case liberally inspired by a 1950s model, this chronograph plays on a tastefully sporty note, with a flexible steel strap made up of fine steel links. It will fulfill urbanites in search of a distinctly masculine timepiece or those living in humid regions. Water-resistant in five atamospheres, this efficient watch contains a Swiss-made, selfwinding mechanical movement (ETA 7750) known for its durability. The trained eye will appreciate the open display in the three o’clock position that simultaneously gives the day and date.

The Longines

Heritage 1968 Elegance in a Square Case

longiness Fully refurbished in 2012 to mark the brand’s 180th anniversary, the Longines Museum houses many treasures including a magnificent square timepiece that was the inspiration for the Longines Heritage 1968. Chic and avant-garde, this new model, available in two sizes and two different materials, is a further addition to the brand’s Heritage line, and offers a journey through time. With its daring aesthetic aspect, the Longines Heritage 1968 was inspired by the collections in the Longines Museum. Located at the heart of the Longines head office in St-Imier, the Museum was completely refurbished in 2012 to mark the brand’s 180th anniversary. The exhibits are evidence of Longines’ rich history, based around its core values and themes, namely elegance, watchmaking tradition, innovation, sport and adventure. Among the exceptional pieces on view in the Museum, a square timepiece dating from 1968 was the inspiration for this new creation. Available in two sizes – 26 x 26 mm and 33 x 33 mm – and in steel or rose gold, the Longines Heritage 1968 boasts a timeless beauty. The grey-brushed dial features black, finely painted Roman numerals and a chapter-ring around the outside. A fine line of black varnish on the minute and hour hands echoes the lines of the numerals, providing a delicate contrast. While the square case is at first glance more classical, the Longines Heritage 1968 reveals an interesting profile with its slightly beveled glass that protrudes over the middle. Moreover, the trapezium-shaped date aperture lends the watch a fresh, avant-garde air that contrasts with the more stringent lines of the case. The watch is fitted with a mechanical movement, L595 and the whole is mounted on an elegant black alligator strap.

LANGE 1 TOURBILLON

PERPETUAL CALENDAR HANDWERKSKUNST

A. Lange & Söhne is re-launching its horological opus magnum with the two epony-mous complications – it had its debut just last year – in a special HANDWERKSKUNST edition limited to 15 timepieces. It leverages the entire spectrum of artisanal skills mastered by the eminent Saxon manufactory.

The LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR HANDWERKSKUNST combines two classic complications with the typical design of A. Lange & Söhne’s most famous wristwatch: the LANGE 1. Intelligently arranged around the time indications, the calendar displays with the patented peripheral month ring deliver a host of information at a single glance: date, day, month, leap year, and moon phase. A decisive asset: all perpetual calendar displays advance instantaneously. They are so harmoniously integrated in the dial architecture that it takes a second look to grasp the technical complexity of this horological masterpiece. To assure crisp legibility, the refined tourbillon mechanism with the patented stop function can be observed only on the caseback side. The dial is crafted from solid white gold and in this special edition is decorated with a rare combination of tremblage and relief engraving techniques. The manual work involved extends into the realm of the smallest details: For the first time in a Lange timepiece, the blue numerals of the outsize date display are handpainted.

a.lange & sohne

Limited to six pieces, its density of complications represents the pinnacle of Lange watchmaking artistry. The highly demanded timepiece is priced at almost Euro 2 million.

A sound of inimitable purity Every fifteen minutes, when set to grande sonnerie, it first indicates the full hour on the low-pitched gong and then the quarter-hours with a double strike on both gongs. In the petite sonnerie mode, it indicates the elapsed quarter-hours with one, two, or three double strikes on both gongs. At the top of every hour, it strikes the time in hours on the low-pitched gong. The chronograph is a monopusher type with a rattrapante function and flying seconds. This rare supplementary function makes it possible to freeze stopped times to fifths of a second. A calendar for eternity The perpetual calendar mechanism not only knows the different durations of all months in the course of a year, it is also aware of the fact that February has 29 days in leap years. The mechanism first needs to be corrected by one day in the year 2100. The duration of each month is coded into a 48-segment wheel with recesses that are mechanically sampled by the date switching lever.

A. The Lange & Söhne’s Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase

tracks the lunar cycle

The new GRAND LANGE 1 MOON PHASE gives the moon-phase display, which is designed to remain accurate for 122.6 years, distinctive prominence on the dial. A patented coating process for the lunar disc endows this astronomical complication with a remarkably lifelike appearance.

Never before has the moon phase been as prominently showcased as in the new GRAND LANGE 1 MOON PHASE. It provides vividly realistic proof of how closely the moon-phase display tracks the actual orbit of our planet’s companion. This is because the display is connected with the hour-wheel continuum. As a result, it is constantly in motion, just like the moon itself. The moon-phase display indicates the time that elapses from new moon to new moon with an accuracy of 99.9978 per cent. The average synodic month lasts 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 3 seconds. For the sake of simplicity, most classic moon-phase displays round this cycle down to 29.5 days. The resulting deviation of 44 minutes and 3 seconds per lunation adds up to one day in merely two and a half years. The GRAND LANGE 1 MOON PHASE features a combination of an off-centre dial, the outsize date, and a lavishly finished manufacture caliber.

REPLAY WINTER 2014 For winter 2014, Replay has put together a collection inspired by a concept of URBAN FUSION. A mix in other words, a blend of some of the strongest current trends with a strong modern urban personality. Of course, without moving away from the brand’s historic tradition, deeply rooted in denim, shirts and casualwear. The result is a collection with a strong sense of mixand-match and post-modern contamination, that explores and reworks the world of denim and casualwear, then shifts towards an idea of new romance and ethnic, via outdoor wear through to military and biker worlds. The common denominators of this journey are experimentation, attention to detail and the brand’s valuable heritage.

David Beckham

stars in new campaign for H&M. Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn David Beckham will star in a new campaign to launch the spring collection of David Beckham Bodywear at H&M. Shot by director Nicolas Winding Refn, known for his movies Drive and Only God Forgives, the campaign made its debut during the US Super Bowl.

In the action-packed plot, David is locked out of a photo shoot on a rooftop in just his underwear, with no way down. He has to go to any lengths to get to safety, performing all his own stunts in the process. David has filmed two alternative versions, which will be put to a vote on hm.com to find the people’s favorite. Voting starts on January 27. “It was so exciting to work with one of my favorite directors, Nicolas Winding Refn, on my new campaign for H&M. Nicolas pushed me hard to create an action-packed film, which shows off this season’s new heritageinspired bodywear at its best,” says David Beckham. “I loved working with David for his new campaign. He is natural in front of the camera, and was fearless when performing his own stunts. The campaign is funny, smart and spectacular showing the many different sides of David’s personality,” says Nicolas Winding Refn. The campaign features pieces from the Spring David Beckham Bodywear collection, which sees a fresh take on heritage. Stripes of varying widths are introduced on long-sleeved Henleys, vests and trunks, as well as varsity-style lettering on the back of long-sleeved raglan tops. Also debuting will be David Beckham Bodywear pieces for kids. A mini-me collection for boys includes Henleys, vests, trunks, long johns and pyjama shorts. The collections will be available in selected H&M stores and online from January 30. RAW got an exclusive Q&A with the Great David Beckham himself to talk about his new – Spring 2014 campaign.

David Beckham

Can you tell us about your new campaign for your David Beckham Bodywear range at H&M? These new pieces join the core David Beckham Bodywear collection, which has already become a staple in the wardrobes of men worldwide since its launch in February 2012. I had such a great time filming last year’s campaign with Guy Ritchie that I wanted to push myself this time to see what more I could do. I have always loved the films of Nicolas Winding Refn, particularly Drive and Only God Forgives, and so I was thrilled when he agreed to direct my new campaign. From the beginning I asked him to come up with an action filled story that also had a great sense of humor, in which I could also do all my own stunts. What is it that you like about Nicolas Winding Refn? His films are so incredibly tense and are full of action, yet they are also so stylish. I remember when Drive was first released, and everybody was talking about it. He manages to get so much packed into his films, and yet it all feels effortless. When it came to thinking who’d be perfect to shoot my next commercial, I knew he’d be right for the job. Tell us the story in the commercial – what happens? The commercial is set in a photo studio in East London, where I’m shooting a Bodywear campaign. It’s on the top floor of a building, and during a break I step outside onto the roof to get some air. The door shuts, and I get locked out, on a roof, in just my briefs and vest. I have to do whatever it takes to get myself down from the roof. What was it like doing all your own stunts? Nicholas and his team worked hard to create a storyline that allowed me to be in every single scene. I’ve learned so much about the work and preparation that goes into even the most straightforward stunt. It takes incredible dedication from a whole team to make it all look natural, while also being safe for everyone involved. When it came to film the stunts, I was nervous, but I also knew I was in the best hands. When we had filmed them, it was such a thrill.

Is it true that there are going to be alternative endings? Yes, it’s true. I wanted there to be another twist to the campaign, and so we’ve filmed two alternative endings for the story. Visitors to HM.com will be able to vote for their favorite ending, with the winning version being debuted during the Superbowl on February 2nd. I can’t wait to see which ending everyone around the world chooses to see! Talk us through the new Spring range of your Bodywear collection. We’re introducing lots of new styles to the Bodywear collection at H&M, which continue with a heritage feel. I love the new stripes on pieces like long-sleeve Henleys and vests. There are two different types of stripe, one with a very thin stripe that feels like an update on classic undergarments, and then a wider stripe that is more like our take on preppy sportswear. There’s also a new poloshirt shape, and a long-sleeved raglan top that’s got a playful large letter B on the back. It’s great to be taking these ideas from vintage pieces and making them feel fresh and contemporary.

introduced it back in 2012. At the time it felt like something very new to create a bodywear range that was based around fit and cut rather than on branding. It’s been so satisfying that men around the world have responded so enthusiastically to the collection. It shows that it was the right decision to take, and that men are really looking for new classics to be in their wardrobe. What’s next for David Beckham Bodywear? One of the most enjoyable parts of creating the collection is seeing what else can be included in our idea of bodywear. For instance, I love the loungewear pieces that are in the range, and which I love to wear when I’m relaxing at home. We think long and hard before we make any additions to the range, because we want everything that we do to be just right. We have a really exciting new addition to the collection coming this summer, which I can’t wait to tell you about.

What about the seasonless collection - is it still available? Yes absolutely. At the heart of my Bodywear range is a core collection of pieces, which will always be available, no matter what season. I wanted to create a collection that men could come to rely on, and would be available to them at every H&M store that sells menswear, no matter where they are in the world. What do you think about the reaction to your Bodywear collection? I’m overwhelmed by the reaction to my Bodywear collection at H&M. It’s been an immediate success from the moment we

Pages The Book of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks By Bethany Keeley From the sarcastic to the suggestive, here are quotation marks as we love them best, doing horrible damage to the English language. Who wouldn’t have second thoughts about ordering the “hamburger” on the diner’s menu? Would it be best to skip the “blowout” sale at the department store? What hidden price must be paid for something marked “free”? Assembled by the creator of the wildly popular “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks, this book surveys the havoc wreaked by quotation marks on signs, menus, placards, and posters that leave reality upended by supposed “facts.” This smarty-pants guide is “perfect” for desperate grammarians, habitual air quoters, and anyone who appreciates a good laugh.

Crash and Burn By Artie Lange & Anthony Bozza (Contributor) Veteran comedian and radio personality Artie Lange turns an unflinching eye and his signature wit on his perilous descent into narcotic addiction, life-threatening depression, and ultimately, his recovery, in the follow-up to his hilariously raw debut, #1 New York Times bestseller Too Fat to Fish. At a high point in his career, Artie Lange played a sold-out show in Carnegie Hall and totally killed—yet during his standing ovation, all he could think of were the two bags of narcotics in his pocket. In the midst of a deep, self-destructive depression, addicted to narcotics and prescription drugs, he lashed out at everyone around him— from his fellow cast members on The Howard Stern Show, to celebrity guests, his longtime friends, and even his own family. By turns dark and disturbing, hilarious and heartbreaking, and always drop-dead honest, Crash and Burn lifts the curtain on Artie’s dangerous slide, and offers a new, crystal-clear window into the mind of the addict. For the first time, Artie reveals all: the full truth behind his now legendary Stern Show meltdown, his suicide attempt (which he relates in terrifying detail), surprising stints in rehab, and painful relapses. With Crash and Burn, Artie Lange goes all-in, confessing a story that is as shocking as it is funny, ever tempered by his characteristic humor, self-awareness, and inimitable way with words.

The Discovery of Middle Earth: Mapping the Lost World of the Celts By Graham Robb A treasure hunt that uncovers the secrets of one of the world’s great civilizations, revealing dramatic proof of the extreme sophistication of the Celts, and their creation of the earliest accurate map of the world. Fifty generations ago the cultural empire of the Celts stretched from the Black Sea to Ireland and the Highlands of Scotland. In six hundred years, the Celts had produced some of the finest artistic and scientific masterpieces of the ancient world. A pioneering history grounded in a real-life historical treasure hunt, The Discovery of Middle Earth offers nothing less than an entirely new understanding of the birth of modern Europe. LAn Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth By Chris Hadfield Colonel Chris Hadfield has spent decades training as an astronaut and has logged nearly 4000 hours in space. His own extraordinary education in space has taught him some counterintuitive lessons: don’t visualize success, do care what others think, and always sweat the small stuff. You might never be able to build a robot, pilot a spacecraft, make a music video or perform basic surgery in zero gravity like Col. Hadfield. But his vivid and refreshing insights will teach you how to think like an astronaut, and will change, completely, the way you view life on Earth-especially your own. Johnny Carson By Henry Bushkin A revealing and incisive account of the King of Late Night at the height of his fame and power, by his lawyer, wingman, fixer, and closest confidant. From 1962 until 1992, Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show and permeated the American consciousness. He was notoriously inscrutable, as mercurial (and sometimes cruel) off-camera as he was charming and hilarious onstage. During the apex of his reign, Carson’s longtime lawyer and best friend was Henry Bushkin, who now shows us Johnny Carson with a breathtaking clarity and depth that nobody else could. From the moment in 1970 when Carson hired Bushkin (who was just twentyseven) until the moment eighteen years later when they parted ways, the author witnessed and often took part in a string of escapades that still retain their power to surprise and fascinate us. Johnny Carson unveils not only the hidden Carson, but also the raucous, star-studded world he ruled.

Joe’s Café

I

t feels almost too long overdue, but I was still so excited to hear that Joe’s Café has come to Kuwait. Once again I can be reunited with my very dear and missed friend, the Chicken Risotto. The last time I had that work of art was back in London, hoping that each bite during my review would bring back a waterfall of memories. I spent many celebrations in Joe’s Café, London and have become quite the fan. There is a fan inside of me that really has high hopes and wishes that the high standards of the brand would be present in my experience, Hassan AlMosawi writes. At first glance I was delighted, the atmosphere and design was even better than I had anticipated, with higher ceilings and a fresher feel, I can imagine that Joe himself, whoever he is, would be proud! The ambiance was definitely my style, as I love eating in a bright environment that has a sense of cleanliness and freshness.

Sitting down, watching the waiters run around serving the many exited looking diners, I couldn’t help but notice that every second dish was a Risotto. It looks like I wasn’t the only person excited about Joe’s for the same reason. After a few minutes of trying to figure out what magic is in that sauce, my food arrived. I started with a Prawn Salad and their Rocca Salad. My wife has been trying to get me to enjoy salads, I somehow tried to but with the two salads I was devouring, I can now find it easy to love them. The prawns smothered in a buttery sauce seemed to melt in my mouth. Rich with flavors that my only complaint was, there weren’t enough prawns. The Rocca salad was so light and fresh, cleansing my pallet and teasing my appetite. After resting my cutlery on the plate I noticed one of the waiters with that gorgeous orangey Risotto headed my way. I could see the pride in his face as he brought me the dish, as if knowing exactly how good it would taste. “Hello old friend, you did not change one bit.” The next few minutes I don’t remember clearly, just eating spoon full after spoon full until the plate was clean with no trace of even the sauce. The rich yet not overwhelming sauce, with its addictive quality somehow tasted just like the good old days. This was the main deciding factor that determined the level of accuracy Joes Café has in executing Joe’s dishes. My hosts were kind enough to fill the table with almost their entire menu. Challenge accepted. I managed to dig my fork in every dish and they got better as I went through them. There were however a few star dishes amongst the variety of dishes that were served to us that night. The few dishes that no matter where I am in the world, I would head to Joe’s to have. The ones I would schedule into my week, or anticipate on date night with my wife. The top choice being the Chicken Risotto, and shortly following behind it, would be the two juicy steaks, the Wagyu and the Rib Eye, both of which I took to-go, as I had to finish them. You can’t go wrong with any of the salads but I do recommend the prawn salad the most. The pastas are heavenly, especially their pesto pasta, which is usually the special of the day on Fridays. I personally would actually call beforehand and make sure they are making it before my visit.

Kuweat in Dubai

By Essa Behbehani (Follow him on Instagram: @KUWEATS)

I

usually don’t listen to people’s suggestions when it comes to fine dining, especially coming from Kuwaiti definition of ‘fine dining’. As I grow older, travel and work more and more with different styles and types of food, I try to educate myself with different types of cuisines. I decided that my aim would be to try something new every time; food I would never have eaten prior to my journey. Never asking for extra sauce, or without this, or add that, just ordering the food as it is, and experiencing a chef’s art. Le Petite Maison is a sister restaurant to ZUMA, which I consider one of the best restaurants in the world. So, someone who can establish a restaurant like Zuma and own a French restaurant with such an endearing name ‘Le Petite Maison,’ meaning ‘The Small House’ should be amazing. When I asked the Operation Manager of Zuma Dubai about the place, he simply stated, “It will be the freshest food you will ever try.” I was eager to go, and after my first visit, I was hooked. Ordering literally the whole menu (not an exaggeration), I challenged myself to eat everything; loving some dishes and others, although fresh, weren’t to my personal liking. First of all when someone thinks of French cuisine you ultimately think CHEESE. Though I’m not a cheese person, I kept getting suggestions to order the Burrata; my friend suggested I order two, one for my left hand and another for my right. Well, get this. The day I ordered the Burrata, I ended up ordering three. One for my right, one for my left, and one to share with the wife… That’s how amazing the Burrata Buffalo cheese was. It’s as fresh as it gets, topped with tomatoes, and basil leaves. The Crab Lobster salad was simply one of the best salads ever with an amazing flavor and after taste that you would want to have the whole day. I also ordered the Abergine, which is eggplant, but of course it was something really different, with the eggplant being so fresh, rightly sized, full of delicious flavors and tangs with prawn and tomato paste on top.

Kuwait in dubai Next up was the warm prawn with olive oil. Speaking of the olive oil, let’s take a moment and give the green goodness a standing ovation. The oil they use to cook is also at the table, simply one of the best olive oils I’ve tried. Thought of actually drinking it. Yes. It’s that good.

Moving onto the entrees… When I see a baby chicken on the menu, I end up going crazy. So of course ordered it. It looks like a chicken, but it was lighter than a feather, you can’t tell which part is which, meaning that the meat is super tender. The sole fish, which is one of their signature dishes, was superb. When it comes to fish however, they are really famous for their Sea Bass. The Rib Eye and Lamb Chops are both amazing, but always order it medium; otherwise you won’t get the right taste. With whatever I decide to order, I have to order the Potato Gratinee, a side dish that’s creamy and goes well with everything. Thinking I wasn’t going to be impressed with the dessert because of how good the food was; I was definitely proved wrong. From their fresh warm Chocolate Soufflé, oozing with chocolate goodness to their creamy Crème Brulee, I fell in love with Le Petite Maison even more. The cheese is the best Cheesecake I’ve ever tasted in my life. The only two negative things about this place are their Pastas and service. Both were average. Kuweat there. Seriously.

When I asked the Operation Manager of Zuma Dubai about the place, he simply stated, “It will be the freshest food you will ever try. Grading: A-
