To properly clip on extensions, divide your hair into two sections and tease the lower part. Spray a bit of hairspray. Clip the extensions on the ‘teased’ section and let down the upper part of your hair. You’re done! Make sure the extensions blend in color-wise and length-wise.

Japan has been one of the capitals we watch when it comes to fashion and trends. How did this happen you might ask? It all started with the simple kimono that until this day remains in the Japanese culture. The first to adapt western clothing were officers and men and also some of the army and navy men after seeing all the English marines who were stationed in Japan.

Blazing Brazil The first thing that comes on our minds when we say Brazil is bright tropical colors and flowers. Why not incorporate it into your look? Add a bit of color and edge to your simplicity. Try a Dsquared2 coral statement necklace or a Lanvin bracelet in bright colors. Feeling risky? Try a pair of Moschino floral shorts with a plain white tee or even a silk maxi dress from Issa London in bright blue. Make your outfit stand out more with a bright red lip to match the blazing hot Brazilian weather.

Feather Festival Once in a while some of the trends tend to be on the crazy side. However, no one said we didn’t love crazy. Feathers can make an outfit appear 10 times more chic and fun at the same time, when worn correctly. Remember not to go overboard with both feathers and colors. Start easy with a colorful feather headband with wavy hair and a plain white dress. Or maybe a pair of Valentino pink feather sandals. Our favorite piece was the Isabel Marant necklace, it will bring a colorful vibe to your plain outfit and people will love it.

Or maybe a pair or Valentino rock stud leopard flats to give your look an edgy feel. Wearing too much color? Go for Versace white pointed flats. Calm and classy. Feb 86 STYLES 34
Fashion Touchdown “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.” Who hasn’t laughed at this sentence from The Devil Wears Prada? Well, florals are still here but in a different way. Intrigued? Yes we are. For this year’s Super Bowl every designer in the Council of Fashion Designers of America designed a helmet for Bloomingdale’s collaborating with both Bloomies and the National Football League. Nicole Miller went with florals and stripes inspired by her SS14 collection and we love it! It’s definitely on our wanted list.

Orchid Overload Who doesn’t love a splash of color in their wardrobe? We’re loving the beautiful shades of orchid colors all over the runways and stores. It’s such a happy color that can be easily dressed up or down and as an added bonus it’s color of the year! Don’t know how to wear it? Easy. If you’re wearing a skirt or dress, keep the accessories simple and plain, let the color do the talking. However, if you’re accessorizing with this color, you can be more risky. Not feeling the color as part of your outfit? Paint your nails in a gorgeous shade of purple, but don’t you dare match it with a similar color lipstick.

Perfume Made for Modern Kings KӦnig by Yosh Fragrances It’s that time of the year again of giving and receiving love and affection – to those men in our lives that make everyday that much better. Sometimes it’s easier said than done – and we are left wondering what that gift will be. What better way to show your King how much they mean to you, than with a scent that is fit for one? Olfactory artist, Yosh Han, introduces K Ӧnig, a perfume made for modern kings. The Yosh ‘M’ series is an artisanal portfolio of perfumes that have been created by Yosh Han, the widely recognized San Francisco born custom perfumer, whose fragrance line is fast becoming a perfume of choice for anyone and, everyone, in the know. A homage to the king within, perfumer Yosh Han, created KӦnig, a dark charismatic elixir fit for royals of yesterday and mortals of today. KӦnig takes us to a deep, black Bavarian forest during the time of medieval kings. This elegant masculine scent captures the dual nature of a man – gentleman and hunter, an alpine fragrance that evokes a king on a hunt, racing through the Bavarian forest with aromatic bitters and crisp red apples in the air. Beneath a layer of snow flowers, it opens into a white musc and deepens into the scent of saddle leather and smoky firewood. K Ӧnig, is the second fragrance in the “M” Series by San Francisco perfumer, Yosh Han. Highly sought after for her exclusive bespoke perfumes, Han says, “The “M” series is a departure from the ethereal quality of my previous collections and explores fragrances that evoke our deepest nature. KӦnig embodies the archetypal King in the mature masculine bringing the qualities of mythology into present time.” The modern man who wears K Ӧnig embraces his primal instincts while honoring the king within. Delve into any one of Han’s fragrances and open up a world where you can set moods and bring out the inner royal of Yout king – and the best part is that its not only made for the modern king, but can easily be worn by his Queen. Styling Tips by An outfit like this is ideal for an evening out, whether it’s a date with your other half or a fancy dinner with friends. You don’t want to dress over the top just to a dinner, so a beautifully colored short dress would do the talking. No need to over accessorize, choose a set of earrings that you feel would complete your look, instead of stacking up on necklaces and bracelets. Since the dress here is plain, pick a statement clutch and a hot pair of heels to keep your overall look sophisticated yet hot! Grab your coat and go on and turn heads.

Yalda Golsharifi For a chic sunny daytime look, an outfit like this would definitely be eye catching! Of course in a stylish and well-put together way! Go with a printed cropped top and a pair of high waisted demins, accessorize with a hat and let everything else be simple. Because the hat is a flashy hot red, your shoes, bag and jewelry shouldn’t be as loud. If it’s a bit chilly outside, throw on a light leather jacket and you’re good to go.

Casati Collection Marchesa Luisa Casati, the Italian aristocrat and one of the most legendary and artistically represented women in history, inspired the new CH Carolina Herrera handbag Collection. An icon and constant source of inspiration during the first few decades of the 20th century, Casati’s extravagant lifestyle, bold fashion statements, and eccentric personality captivated some of the most influential artists and designers of the era including Léon Beask, Paul Poiret, Erté and Giovanni Boldini. Considered to be the world’s first female dandy among the European high society, Luisa Casati was the muse for both renowned portraits and innovative collections, satisfying her desire for immortalization. Casati was quoted stating “I want to be a living work of art.” In the same vein, Carolina Herrera takes inspiration from Marchesa with the new accessory collection. The genuine Denver leather exterior characterized by its soft texture and flawless appearance is contrasted by the structured, linenlined interior which contributes to the modern, clean aesthetic of the Casati collection. The bags are marked by the names Marchesa, Luisa and Stampa hidden on the backside of each style making them each unique in design. Each feature a golden rectangular closure providing a common visual thread for the three different sizes, and gives a nod to Marchesa and her love for extravagant, suggestive jewelry. The color tones inspired by the modernist movement are masterfully combined in this collection which, like this particular character, is destined to be an inimitable, one-of-a-kind legend.

Bags This season, the bags have declared themselves in two large families. The new iconic Lanvin Beyond collection reinterprets a luxurious version of a pochette evening bag created by the fashion house in the 1950s: Parisian style to a tee. The new tote version of Beyond combines a double strap, as a shoulder bag or handbag, in charcoal patina-effect python and nude bijou grained calfskin. Three new Beyond Clutch bags sporting a leather side strap come in mastic caviar-grain calfskin, grained mirror black and gold goatskin or nappa lambskin and caviar-grain calfskin in black and burgundy. This season, the evening models welcome some new additions. A zip-up leather envelope, the essence of exquisite femininity is inspired by Alber Elbaz’s personal collection, accessorised by a leather buckle stamped with the Lanvin logo. The Rectangle evening minaudière bag is the perfect accessory for the Lanvin woman’s eveningwear. Craft-moulded over rigid lines, its architecture is dominated by an Art Deco metal clasp.
Heels Bursting with blissfully elegant freedom, the Chunky heel adorns a multitude of sandals following every summer mood.

Winter is so over in our books and we can’t wait to shed away a few layers that will help us prep up for the warm weather that’s heading our way. Make room in your closet for staple pieces such as the tea-length skirt and cropped sweater in a happy color. Accessories are always a must, especially in transitional seasons, who can resist those cutout heels and comfy embellished sandals – we don’t know why but we can’t stop imagining them being worn with socks. Isolda Fruits of Desire Colors, fruits, and positive vibes. This is what Isolda is all about! The fashion brand Isolda was created as a multicultural and global brand whilst the name was inspired by a great love story featuring the designer’s great grandmother and husband. Alessandra Alonso Ferreira is an architect and designer whilst her younger sister Juju Alonso Ferreira is a journalist. Also, their partner Maya Pop is a graphic designer. They love to travel and discover new places and cultures and that is what inspired the brand. The girls spent their childhood between Salvador and London, absorbing the best from each culture. Family vacations in Africa, Europe and other parts of the world were part of their routine. The three of them used to live in Horto Florestal, a neighborhood surrounded by nature, in Salvador, Bahia. There used to be a lot of fruit trees in their backyard, such as cashew, mango and guava trees. All sorts of birds and monkeys used to play among the trees. The girls met several years later and decided to establish the brand in 2011. It all began when the architect sister Alessandra decided that fashion is the way to go for her so she moved to London and started off as a textile designer. She took several art classes before enrolling at Chelsea College of Arts (part of the University of the Arts). Fashion was always part of their lives, as their mom was a huge fan of clothes and that inspired the girls to start their line. Their mom used to design her own shoes and handbags, and also identical clothes for her girls. Alessandra used to always sew her own doll clothes. And she felt like she could turn her passion into a real job and become a professional designer. In London, she started designing jewelry and she would go to Portobello Market to hunt for some Victorian jewelry, which she then mixed with other pieces and Brazilian stones to create unique pieces. For her graduation project, Alesandra decided to approach it in a professional way and started designing clothes from a specific color pallet.

Isolda is available at BoutiqueN Boutique
After the pieces were ready she showed them to her friend Juliana who then came on to become a fashion journalist who worked for Brazilian Vogue for a while before going to London. Juliana’s first project was Alessandra’s college one where they asked a friend to model for them and then created editorials and published them online. After her creations became the talk of the town and everyone was raving about them, the sisters decided then and there to make it an official business. They asked Maya to create the brand’s logo but after getting involved in the brand they asked her to become a partner. Later on, they took Isolda to Brazil! They put on a small fashion show to introduce the brand to the public. Eventually it lead to a huge success and the brand has been attracting many clients in so many different countries. Alessandra is the designer and creative director behind the brand. She says her inspiration comes from tropical imagery whether it’s cashews, guavas, fruits, orchids, or even precious stones. She is currently stationed in New York while Maya lives in Madrid, and Juliana in Sao Paulo. Even though they are in different countries, they seem to make it work! Maya mentioned that they are all connected to Isolda 24 hours a day, seven days a week!

Sparkle With Brazilian Fervor! Carla Amorim is a Brazilian jewelry designer whose creations have taken the fashion world by storm. Born in Brasilia, Carla discovered her passion and artistic talent for designing jewelry, and first pursued it as a hobby. The Carla Amorim brand was founded in 1992, and is today a reputed name in the international market offering necklaces, rings and earrings for lovers of jewels. Carla’s designs are inspired by three major Brazilian elements: Architecture, Nature, and Culture. As a native of Brasilia, Carla is continually moved by the work of famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. His influence is evident in the structural composition of her jewels. The motifs in her pieces such as flowers, wind, and water are a tribute to nature at its best. Carla gives great consideration to the flora and fauna of Brazil in her work. The cultural charms of Brazil too, are well represented in her creations such as the Bossa Nova collection of jewelry.

Contemporary, fresh, feminine, and delicate are words that would be apt to describe the beauty of a Carla Amorim creation. Colorful and precious gemstones add brilliance to the 18-karat gold she uses to craft each dainty piece. The finishing is mostly matte in yellow, white, rose or black gold. Carla’s jewels are a firm favorite on the red carpet, and have been spotted on celebrities and VIPS like Michelle Obama, Sandra Bullock, Hillary Swank, Uma Thurman, Sofia Vergara, Selena Gomez, Emma Stone, Katherine Heigl, and many others.

Metropolis
A Homage to New York City’s Architecture The voyage begins with Metropolis – meaning “mother city”; a line of 18kt yellow gold and diamond jewelry, inspired by 1920’s art deco architecture, in Ivanka’s favorite city, New York. Using a satin 18kt gold finish and diamonds of the highest quality, the geometric style for this collection has a classic, sophisticated elegance that can be seen on runways across the world. Each piece is designed with an ‘IT’ motif, signifying the Greek key – a popular architectural design during the art deco period.
Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry Debuts The Journey A series of fine jewelry collections inspired by Ivanka Trump’s passion for travel, architecture and design. Each collection within the Journey collection is directly influenced by Ivanka’s favorite locations around the globe.

Patras
The First Complete Color Collection
The second collection in the Journey series inspired by Ivanka Trump’s passion for travel. The Patras collection, named after the city of the same name in western Greece, is a reinvention of the artistic design of the art deco era from the 1920’s – 1960’s that was greatly influenced by Greek culture and history. The result is a jewelry line of white gold and blue gemstone pieces reminiscent of the crystal blue waters of the Gulf of Patras.

Toulouse
Jewelry Inspired by the Roots of Art Deco
The third collection from its jewelry series the Journey. Given that the art deco tradition began in France, the Toulouse collection couples that iconic style with the color pink, the fashion color currently seen on runways around the world. The result is a youthful, contemporary line of jewelry that truly Rocks Tradition. Lying on the banks of the River Garonne, Toulouse, France is known as La Ville Rose – “The Pink City” – for its architectural brick buildings that look pink in the sun. Originating in France in the 1920’s, the art deco style is still seen in the streets of Toulouse today. Sculptures and mosaics found along rue Alsace Lorraine helped inspire Ivanka to create a collection from this elegant city.

Aberdeen
Feminine Jewelry Inspired by the Architecture of Golf Aberdeen, the fourth and final collection in the Journey fine jewelry series. Inspired by the site of the Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen, Scotland, also the native country of Ivanka’s paternal grandmother, this jewelry line is a softer look for the Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry customer. The collection is comprised of designs reflecting the rolling waves from the Aberdeenshire coastline and the impressive sand dunes from the golf course.

Omega Ladymatic in Sedna Gold with a Mother of Pearl Inlaid Bracelet
Jaquet Droz’s Lady 8 The Lady 8, a new fine jewelry watch elegantly plays on curves, for women who appreciate the sensuality of time. The symbol of infinity and completeness, the figure 8, Jaquet Droz’s lucky number has always been present on the dial of the Grande Seconde. A permanent source of inspiration, it appears here for the first time on the case and the buckle of a very feminine model, bound to appeal to more than one lady with its playful side and jewelry. The bezel intertwined with a gem-set ribbon highlights the curves of the watch, whose simplicity and refinement catch the eye. The effects of volume and depth of the crown enhance the rounded shape of the case, while the domed sapphire glass, the dial and the hands accentuates the threedimensionality of this timepiece. A last coquettish touch: at its summit, a pearl or a round precious stone accentuates the precious aspect of the watch. Its owner finds herself irresistibly drawn to touch this ornament that matches the dial of her choice, and turn it with her finger. In order to give the Lady 8 more fluid lines, the lugs have given way to an alligator strap attached to the case, which comes in gem-set white or red gold or stainless steel. The new folding clasp, specially created for this model, also takes the shape of a figure of eight, reaffirming the striking identity of the Lady 8 on the inside of the wrist.
This Omega adymatic features a number of breath-taking design elements. It is feminine, understated and uncompromisingly luxurious. The case has been crafted from 18K Sedna gold, a rose gold alloy whose composition means that its colour and lustre will be especially long lasting. The dial is presented in pearled mother-of-pearl. On the bezel are 60 baguette-cut diamonds and a “Brilliant Omega Cut” diamond sparkles on the crown. Complementing the case and dial is an 18K Sedna™ gold bracelet whose links are inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Each inlay is so precisely cut to fit the bracelet that no adhesive material is necessary to attach them.

Blancpain Experience The Power of Discreet Elegance
Concord Saratoga The new Concord Saratoga epitomizes what an intensely fashion-influenced society expects of a great love story. Artfully rendered in 18K 5N rose gold and stainless steel, the supremely good-looking Concord Saratoga 2014 His and Hers models are a romantic nod to contemporary power couples. Like the power couple that they are, the Concord Saratoga His and Hers represent a powerful unit composed of two strong, individual masculine and feminine identities, bound together within a perfectly harmonious relationship. Steel represents the strength and power of virile manhood, emphasized in His by robust 40mm case and silver barleycorn guilloché pattern dial. The warm rose gold in Her counterpart provides the perfect foil, representing femininity, glamour and charm that are further enhanced by the dainty white motherof-pearl dial, its polished Roman numerals interspersed with 6 sparkling diamond hour markers, and signature 8-sided bezel set with 32 magnificent diamonds. Powered by ETA quartz movements driving the hour, minute and date functions. The backs of the stainless steel cases, water resistant to 30m, are embossed with the inimitable Saratoga horses emblem. Both models embrace the wrist gently but firmly on matching brown alligator leather straps. These elegant His and Hers timepieces represent the quintessential Valentine’s gift for two equally cool and intriguing people – couples who make the world a better place, simply by being together. Every year since 2001, Valentine’s Day has marked a special rendezvous between Blancpain and women, for which the manufacture annually introduces a watch featuring an unusual interpretation of love. The Valentine’s Day 2014 model lives up to expectations in a charmingly subtle manner. Reflecting the kind of feelings one prefers to privately relish rather than overtly flaunt, this three-hand watch exudes a discreetly seductive aura. The white mother-of-pearl dial – 33 mm diameterfeatures a motif composed of airy hearts – two engraved and a red transferred one – floating like dainty bubbles. It is delicately framed by an embroidery-like border. The passing of time is conveyed in keeping with the traditional design codes of the Manufacture: hour-markers at 12, 6 and 9 o’clock, interspersed with seven chatons and a date display at 3 o’clock. A row of diamonds on the bezel lends a precious touch, while the ballet of white gold hands further accentuates the featherlight overall impression. Thus exquisitely embellished, the model becomes a true piece of jewellery, a unique creation a woman will naturally wish to wear on her wrist day after day. Celebrating women in harmony with Blancpain’s vision also implies saluting their taste for mechanisms radiating a technical beauty of which they are also keenly aware. A forerunner in this domain, the Manufacture in Le Brassus has been offering ladies’ watches exclusively driven by mechanical movements ever since 1930. The iconic Blancpain Calibre 1150 chosen for the 2014 Valentine’s Day model is equipped with a silicon balance-spring that is non-magnetic and maintains a more constant rate over time.
Ebel Valentine’s Day The partnership of Ebel’s creators, married in life, is at the heart of the masculine and feminine voices that echo throughout the brand’s design DNA. Ebel’s gift suggestion for Valentine’s Day 2014 is not merely scaled versions of one watch, rather each version complements the other’s unique style. The masculine Ebel X-1 Chronograph 43mm in gleaming stainless steel features a rotating bezel with raised minutetrack and sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Its strong commanding presence with a sporty dynamic edge is also evidenced on the dial by applied Arabic numerals and indexes with Super-LumiNova. The Ebel X-1 34mm automatic, fashioned in stainless steel and warm 18K rose gold, shares the same sporty edge as its partner via a rotating bezel with engraved minute-track, three applied Arabic numerals and eight applied indexes, but its smaller scale and gold-plated wave-shaped links bring out the feminine charm of the design. This is a partnership of equals, with a focus on design, appealing to couples who share a sense of adventure and an appreciation for quality. As in all good marriages, they are not mirror images, but each complements and draws out the best in the other, enhancing their union.
Swarovksi Citra Chronograph Instantly recognizable for its unique sparkle, fashion sense and touch of glamour, Swarovski occupies a special place on the international fashion jewelry scene. Introduced six years ago, Swarovski’s watch collection further exemplifies the company’s exquisite combination of creativity, refinement, and passion for detail. As a preview of the upcoming 2014 watch collection, Swarovski unveils one of its newest designs, the Citra Chrono Watch. Feb 86 STYLES 88
Styles: Tell us a little about yourself and the vision behind opening Denim Room boutique? Dana Al Khobaizi: My first retail concept in 2006 was Closet Candy – a women’s multi brand contemporary clothing and accessories boutique. Since it’s establishment, I have introduced top denim brands to the Kuwaiti customer. Until today, no other store in Kuwait competes with our denim selection. I believe denim is the perfect culmination of comfort and style, and Denim Room is a celebration of that denim lifestyle. The raw and industrial vibe of the location, Shuwaikh Market also inspired the concept behind Denim Room. I am influenced by my seasonal buying trips in New York City. All of these inspirations shaped the vision behind the opening of Denim Room. S: What’s on trend at the moment with regards to denim wear? DK: For years, we went from one trend to another, season after season: the bell bottom, acid wash, bootleg, skinny, the boyfriend, distressed, prints, color, embellishment, etc. In this fashion era, it has become all about personal style. I see most of the denim cuts or styles in each collection in one season. What’s on trend at the moment is having your personal style and an overall relaxed look. S: Other than denim wear what will your customers discover at Denim Room? DK: Everything that goes with the denim lifestyle: graphic tees, basic tees/tanks, sweaters, cool leather jackets, scarves, hats, belts, jewelry and sneakers. S: How would you describe a Denim Room customer? DK: Our customer lives a chic lifestyle but prefers an edgy, yet relaxed wardrobe. Regardless of gender, our customer is well travelled and therefore fashion forward, denim savvy and is confident about their style. S: We love the design of Denim Room Boutique. Can you tell us the inspiration behind the design process? DK: Denim Room is inspired by downtown New York lofts, street art, an urban, hipster lifestyle, raw industrial warehouses and an overall grunge glam wardrobe. The talented Yousef Al Ibrahim, brought this inspiration to life. He drew inspiration from his travels and our shared love for New York City. Yousef thought of every detail from the permanent marker tiles in the fitting room to the one of a kind accessories. My company’s Creative Director David Klefeker who consulted on this project worked on original artwork such as “Post No Bills” and “Denim Never Dies”. I feel very fortunate to have worked with incredible talent in Kuwait, like Yousef, who I know will go so far in his career. S: In addition to the designers you carry, who are your personal favorite designers? DK: I mostly only wear black, grey, olive green, white, nude and blue jeans. So New York designers such as Helmut Lang, Philip Lim and Alexander Wang are among my personal favorites. S: In a few words, how would you describe your personal style? DK: I skip dresses and skirts as much as I can and mostly stick to pants. I love leggings, skinny distressed jeans, blazers, graphic tees and I’m all about leather this season (any every Fall/Winter). Because of my love for neutral colors, I am always bejeweled and almost never seen without colored nails. S: Are you planning on launching an online shopping platform for Denim Room ? DK: Together with our interior designer Yousef, we have created a unique, urban shopping experience for our customer and I would like to maintain that. So no plans on online shopping for Denim Room. S: Are there any plans or projects for this year that you can share with us? DK: I have teamed up with Creative Consultant David Klefeker to introduce Kor a men’s concept store launching early 2014. Denim Room is located at Shuwaikh market

History of Brazilian Clothing Each country has its own unique traditional clothing which represents its cultural and social status. The type of clothes worn by people is determined on the basis of the climatic conditions, traditions, and ethnic groups of the area. Brazil is a large country with diverse climatic conditions in different regions. Hence, the traditional clothing of Brazil varies from region to region. Brazil is known internationally for its stylish and sophisticated clothing. Brazilian clothes are comfortable, vividly colored, beautifully crafted and decorated with attractive accessories. Traditional Brazilian clothing is influenced by a combination of different races and immigrants from all over the world. In the southern region of Brazil, there is a mixture of German, Russian and Italian immigrants; The Bahia region of Brazil is influenced by African culture, hence their traditional clothing is Bordado Richelieu, which is a doily-like embroidered fabric. Therefor, people in this region mainly wear beach style shirts, bermudas and sunglasses. True traditional Brazilian attire can be seen in the countryside, where men’s clothing includes shirts, jeans and dresses made from inexpensive cotton. In Rio Grande do Sul, the southern plain region of Brazil, the cowboys wear a distinctive dress: baggy trousers called bombachas, ponchos, wide straw hats and boots. The cowherds in the Northeast region wear a coat, hat and leather chaps. In the Amazon, the native Indian/ Americans wear traditional tunics and paint their faces. However, these days, many native Americans have adopted contemporary clothing and lifestyle. In Bahia, many women prefer traditional African clothing that includes a bright colorful shawl, a long full skirt and a turban-like head scarf. In the urban areas of Brazil, most people prefer modern clothing. Jeans are the most common item in the Brazilian wardrobes. Brazilian jeans come in a wide variety of designs, styles and textures. Due to the abundance of beautiful beaches, beachwear is a very popular clothing in Brazil, hence we have Havaianas! The next time you visit Brazil, don’t forget to purchase some of these clothes to add a flash of color to your wardrobe
Sao Paulo You hear about all the parties, fashion, events, and openings that happen in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It’s been the subject of many articles and big stories in the media. Forget about the football team and dancing, this city is booming on the fashion radar! For many brands, Brazil is where they are headed to expand their brands and market. Big names like Louis Vuitton and Missoni have been opening large stores in all areas of Brazil, especially Sao Paulo! Why you might ask? The economy has been booming and as a result Brazilian brands (both ready-to-wear and accessories) are looking to expand outside of Brazil as they are doing so well. As Brazil’s economy slowly rises and the political situation stabilizes, the people have been optimistic business-wise and have been expanding over the years. A lot of things have impacted growth in the “fashion” sector of this city. A huge reason is them winning the bid to host the 2014 World cup and also the 2016 Summer Olympics. That is enough for designers to jump to this continent for growth. In addition to this, Brazilian designers have the loyalty of their people. Brazilian consumers tend to shop more at Brazilian owned stores than other foreign brands, they tend to seek Brazilian designers. Something Sao Paulo has that some places don’t is “cultural advantage.” People in Brazil appreciate the quality of design and not just the name of the brand.
Sao Paulo Fashion Week Sao Paulo Fashion Week is a semi-annual show in Brazil and is considered the fifth largest fashion week behind New York, London, Paris, and Milan. This specific fashion week brings Latin American fashion to the runway and also draws attention to many causes and campaigns to the eyes of the public. The energy that is put into this event is tremendous and that is what excites designers and encourages them to participate and let their creativity out.

Designers Now speaking of designers who are of South American descent, we’ve heard about Manolo Blahnik and Carolina Herrera etc. However, have you ever heard or Isabel Toledo? Carlos Miele? Alejandro Ingelmo? Well we’re here to educate you with the top ten Latin American designers of our generation, Yasmin Tavakoli writes.
“Today we are addressing a women who is in control of her destiny, and a woman who has a strong sense of her femininity. What’s important to the woman is a projection of her individuality, whom she is… what she can bring to the society in which she lives, and fulfill her life in any extraordinary way that she can.” – Oscar de la Renta
Oscar de la Renta One of the biggest fashion icons of this century, Oscar de la Renta, is a Dominican Republic native. He uses his homeland as inspiration for his designs. Dressing woman for more than four decades, he has witnessed a fashion evolution.
Carolina Herrera This brilliant Venezuelan designer didn’t start her fashion career until her 30’s. While known for dressing celebrities like Sofia Vergara and Penelope Cruz, she is most well known for her refined feminine designs, which incorporate bright colors, chiffon and beaded embroidery.

He later went on to receive the award for Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Rodriguez is known for a minimalistic and modern look.
“Latin men love Latin women, it is part of the culture, we celebrate women in a very special way and I think that is present in my work. I do it by making them beautiful, sensual.” – Narcisco Rodriguez
“I never consider myself a minimalist. But another word is reductionist, and that’s something I’m beginning to understand….What bothers me about the term minimalist is that it is so connected with a distinct period. It links me to the past. But I design for today.” – Francisco Costa Feb 86 STYLES 98
Francisco Costa This Brazilian designer is famed for having worked for Oscar de la Renta before becoming the sole designer for Calvin Klein’s women’s collections. In 2009, Costa won the National Design Award, beating Thom Browne and Rodarte. The award honors the best from products to fashion to architecture and was attended by Michelle Obama!
Carlos Campos Born in Honduras, and making his way to Broadway where he was a costume designer, Campos has made a name for himself due to his impeccable tailoring and strong designs. The designer is known to be a bit over the top in his shows and actually had women dress as David Bowie in his last show! In fact, his inspiration was ‘David Bowie and Iman vacationing in France.’

Christian Cota This Mexican native finds his inspiration from his homeland. He has been known to take trips to different parts of Mexico to gain inspiration for his line. Most recently Cota found inspiration from the Yucatan jungle while staying in a ‘high tech eco-cabin,’ and used tropical birds as a basis for his line of jumpsuits, tailored shorts, and strapless gowns.

Golden Globe Awards
It’s the first big award ceremony of the year, where the stars put on their’ Sunday’ best and battle it out Hunger Games style on the Red Carpet. Color, color and… did me mention color? A few of Hollywood’s finest went for solid colored frocks that demanded full attention. And of course no arrival party would be complete without some glitz and glitter on the Red Carpet. However, with all the good comes the bad, we were disappointed to see some Red Carpet champs fall to the bottom of the ranks and some that continue to repeat their mistakes. All and all it’s a good start to award season 2014.

A few celebrities were trotting around a plus one, and by plus one we mean a bun in the oven! These expecting ladies like ‘Scandal’ star Kerry Washington and ‘Rush’ actress Olivia Wilde showed off their cute baby bumps in stunning numbers, that make pregnancy look like a breeze.
Not Impressed
Our predictions were correct when we guessed that Jennifer Lawrence would be wearing a Christian Dior piece (well, duh! she is the face of the campaign), but what we didn’t expect was that she would put on this “pillowy” number. Looking back at her past appearances she takes home the award for best dressed – who can forget that striking red Dior gown she wore last year- that’s why we didn’t see this one coming. The dress even created a social media frenzy as #lawrencing. Oh! J-Law you still won big at a young age and that’s why we love you.

The Best
Sophia Vergara dominated the evening. Gearing away from the usual curve hugging mermaid silhouette, she caught us by surprise in a dramatic voluminous floor-length strapless Zac Posen gown. We can’t imagine anyone else pulling off this dress. Worn on the wrong person it would most probably over power. But that’s not the case for this Columbian born beauty, No sir! She wears the dress not the other way around. Feb 86 STYLES 102

Forget playing it safe in a black gown, these gals opted for bold solid color dresses. It’s so fresh to see an injection of color variety on the Red Carpet. ‘12 Years a Slave’ star Lupita Nyong’o really turned heads in this Ralph Lauren tangerine cape dress and Reese Witherspoon looks polished in a teal Calvin Klein number. However, falling behind is Lena Dunham, she does no justice to that zesty lemon Zac Posen gown. We just wished she would choose a silhouette that wasn’t so ill fitting. Beauty Tips from Miss Cuba
Jamillette Gaxiola Jamillette was born in 1989 in Mazatlan, Mexico. She is a beauty pageant contestant who won Miss Cuba in 2009 and represented Cuba in the 2009 Miss Earth pageant. Currently, she is Miss Cuba Grand International, and placed within the top 10 in the world. In addition to pageants, Jamillette is a very successful model, and is a star on the hit reality show The Shores on the TV Guide Channel. This exotic beauty, who is half Mexican and half Cuban/Lebanese on her mother’s side, sat down with styles to give us some of her beauty tips, Yasmin Tavakoli writes. Yasmin Tavakoli: What do you do to make sure you look your best for a runway show? Jamillette Gxiola: Hair is always very important. So I generally use a hair mask of coconut oil a day or two before a show. Also, if my hair is in an extremely ‘leave me alone’ condition, I rub hair wax on the tips of my hair to conceal split ends after I finish styling my hair. YT: Fashion week can be very brutal for many models who work non stop 12-hour shifts. What do you think is the most important thing to do to prepare for fashion week? JG: Extra sleep! Usually during fashion week, you’re running from show to show and only get minimal sleep. So it’s important to sleep a lot before hand so that you look your best for the shows. The last thing you want is huge dark circles under your eyes! YT: Speaking of dark circles, do you have any tips to combat that puffy look? JG: If you didn’t get that extra sleep in, and you have a bad case of puffy eyes or dark circles, I suggest brewing 2 green tea bags and letting them cool down. Then place them over the eyes for about 5-10 mins. That should help take some of the puffiness down, and then of course the makeup artist will do their magic with extra concealer. YT: You normally have this gorgeous glow in many of your pictures, how can our readers achieve the same look? JG: For skin glow, I exfoliate my entire body in the shower the night before for smooth gleaming skin. Not only will your skin look amazing in pictures, but it will also feel baby soft. Jan 85 STYLES 104
YT: What is your number one beauty tip? JG: The most important thing is to increase your water intake. I always carry large bottles of water with me everywhere I go. Not only does it give you a clearer complexion, it also helps with weight loss. YT: Any other tips from Miss Cuba on how to perform your best? JG: Well for me, the best way to start my day off right is a shot of Cuban coffee. A must!

S: What does beauty mean to you? DC: For me beauty is living the belief that there is beauty in everything around me.
Q&A with Nail Expert Dana Caruso Styles: Tell us a little bit about your experience as a beauty expert. How did you get your start? Dana Caruso: At a very young age, my mother used to take me into Manhattan. She used to sell evening gowns and cocktail dresses. She rented space in a hair salon in the early 1970s. I was running around Manhattan with [my mom for a while.] She used to purchase very glamorous cocktail dresses and evening gowns. Whatever the fashion must-haves were, my mother was purchasing it. So I was seeing fashion along with beauty because I was in a hair salon every day. As a young girl in the 1980’s I began my career as a Nail Technician and immediately knew that I would remain in the beauty industry, However, even at that time I was always looking ahead to go to the next level. I founded The Nail & Skin Care Institute in 1996 which was the first private Spa Training school in the US. As a Beauty Expert I work along with and provide education to the marketing team, the lab team, and the research and development team. I work closely with public relations to launch new products and make appearances at PR events all over the globe. It really grew into a position called the Coty Global Beauty Expert. DC: My favorite Salon Effects is Brattle Snake because it reminds me of a gorgeous python hand bag or shoes. The nail polish colors that are inlaid in the pattern are fresh and slightly neutral. S: Give us some tips on doing your nails at home. DC: Prep is Paramount! Thoroughly wash and dry your hands and nail surface paying close attention to the underside of nails. To keep nails strong, file nails only in one direction. File any pointed edges with a smooth nail board. Apply Sally Hansen’s Vitamin E Nail & Cuticle Oil to entire cuticle area and gently push cuticles back. Apply one coat of Sally Hansen’s Double Duty Strengthening Base & Top Coat clean dry, bare nails; let dry. Apply 1-2 coats of your favorite Sally Hansen nail color. Apply a new coat of Sally Hansen’s Double Duty Strengthening Base & Top Coat as needed for extra protection. Feb 86 STYLES 109

Collection Notes de Printemps
Crystal-clear notes, each one as light and delicate as the next. A melody that one knows off by heart or an improvised harmony announcing the arrival of spring. When the first rays of sunshine emerge, color sets the beat: pink, red and violet adorn the landscape from sunrise to sunset, like notes on a music staff. At the heart of the collection is a spring red. Fresh and luminous, this sunny red is tender and bright on lips, nails and cheeks, and plays the lead in an orchestra of notes enhancing their echo. Following the red tone, pinks and violets play up their shades in a crescendo and improvise with endless variations: Pastel pink swept over eyelids in a sheer touch or electric pink on the lips. Grey lavender for a soft gaze or violet plum lacquer on nails.

Brazilian Wax W hen Sarah Jessica Parker went all “Brazilian” in California in one of the episodes of SATC, it caused a buzz and lot’s of women wanted to try it. The Brazilian is just another type of hair removal and it’s growing popular because it is considered “glamorous” in Hollywood. Well, we don’t consider pain glamorous, but oh well… Here’s how to do it yourself!

Brazilian Blowout T ired of having to straighten your hair every morning and not getting that extra 15 minutes of sleep you really want? Well, we have a solution for you. Go to Brazil! Not the country though, go for the Brazilian Blowout. It is a brand of chemical treatments used to straighten hair. It is also sometimes called Keratin. It is only temporary but it can leave your hair feeling soft and straight for a few months! You can have it done at your local spa or salon, but if you feel like you want to try it out yourself here’s how to do it without needing anything other than your at Home Brazilian Blowout Kit:
1 3 5 7
Wash your hair using the shampoo provided in the kit. Gently dab your hair with the towel but not too strongly.
After you have applied it to all your hair, blow dry your hair while brushing it with a round brush so it straightens. It should be straight when dried.
Rinse your hair with cool water but without the use of shampoo. After, apply the Brazilian Blowout Masque all over your hair. After 1 minute, rinse your hair again.
Blow dry your hair straight and straighten again to seal the deal.
2 4 6 8
Comb your hair and divide into sections. Apply the treatment to each section from the roots to the ends.
Separate your hair into 3 to 4 sections when dried and hold using a clip. After that, straighten each section with a straightening iron.
After that, apply the Brazilian Blowout Smoothing Serum to every strand and comb the hair.
Enjoy your smooth hair!

The Health Tip List
by Yalda Golsharifi
1 3 4
Treat yourself to a monthly detox. Three days will do the trick! Cleansing your system not only boosts your immune system but helps flush out all toxins. Making your body a more efficient machine, meaning all your organs will improve in their functionality. Better skin, hair and a natural glow awaits you. There are many companies that would take the hassle off your shoulders and simply provide you with everything you need, it sure is worth the investment.
2
Sleep on a light stomach. This is a very important habit you should adapt for a healthier life. Sleep is the time your body rejuvenates. Some major processes happen in the body at this time, the last thing you would want is to burden it with the need to digest. Digestion takes a lot of energy and you may find yourself waking up more exhausted than when you went to bed. By sleeping on a light stomach you give your body a chance to heal and do some major maintenance work. But don’t sleep on an empty stomach either, doing so will mean your body has no fuel at all to do what it needs to in your sleep. A light dinner a few hours before bed is perfect.
Walk away your fatigue. You find that in the Middle East people tend to be lazier than other regions. A combination of the hot weather along with the fact that we barely walk is killer. Think about it, we sit for hours at work, sit in our car then sit at home. Put in mind that you need about 10,000 steps a day with the average adult in Kuwait walking about 3,000. Get a pedometer and find out what you are averaging. Then think of as many creative ways of increasing that number daily. It may feel impossible but just a few adjustments and you can add many steps to your daily count. There are many types of pedometers that can be worn in many ways, find what suits you best.
Feb 86 STYLES 116
The only health tip that demands repeating is this. Drink lots of water!! Its so easy to forget or replace water with other liquids. Remember the key to staying hydrated, you should never wait till you are thirsty. When you do feel thirsty it means you have waited too long. It is not a sign of needing more but a phase of dehydration. Try carrying a big bottle around with you, the uglier the better. That way you would want to finish it before anyone else sees you holding it. Two liters a day should be your minimum consumption amount. Always keep a bottle next to your bed and drink before bed and upon waking up.
Find the sauna in your gym and set aside some alone time. Research shows that using a sauna for as little as 20 minutes daily can highly improve your health. What it actually does is replicate the conditions your body would have if you were ill, as if you had a fever. Your body’s natural response would be to combat whatever the cause is, empowering your immune system. The heat also encourages blood circulation and is a miracle for releasing toxins through your skin by sweating. Another proven benefit is that the sauna gives you some alone time which does wonders to lowering your stress levels.

Power of the Plus
by Yalda Golsharifi
This month we look at the value of friendship and connection, follow these steps for a socially rewarding life.
1 3
Reconnect! Go through your phone once a week, find a name of someone you haven’t spoken to in ages. Whether you have mixed feelings about them or simply have lost contact. Call them up just for the sake of calling. Tell them they crossed your mind, that you just wanted to hear from them and that no matter what the distance they should feel you are always there for them. You will feel great! Not only would you have made their day, any mixed feelings will dissolve and you will feel so much love from them and experience reconnection. Do this weekly and you will feel so much love and that you have so many friends.
4
2
Invite one of your friends for dinner just because. Think of someone you truly love, but don’t get to see as much as you would like due to having different schedules or interests. Call them up and invite them to dinner, no special occasion necessary. When you are there, be present and truly listen to them while sharing what you have been through recently. The pure interaction would not only bring you closer, but your friend will feel indebted to your kindness and truly touched by your keen interest in his company.
Make an acquaintance, a friend. We all know many people who we see at events, know on a superficial level or just know by name. Next time you come across someone who you happen to feel good around but have always seen as an acquaintance, take their number and invite them out that week. Ask them questions, find common ground and you would realize just how easy it is to make friends. As a society we tend to be very guarded, robbing ourselves from the beautiful art of making friends and truly getting close with people.
Take a moment to tell a friend how much they mean to you. Do this to a friend you see daily and might have taken for granted at some point. When you see them just take a moment and let them know how they have effected your life and how you are so glad to know them. People love those who appreciate, and sometimes they also forget that you truly care for them. Don’t underestimate what a gentle reminder can do.
5
Make friends out of your family. Most people only see their family at gatherings and completely separate their social life and personality from their family. No one can be a better or a more loyal friend then a person who has been there from the beginning. Take a sibling or parent out, simply to discuss some issues and how you feel about them, give them a chance to be there for you and dig deep to where you could be there for them. Just how a lover needs to be reminded of how much they are loved on a daily basis, a gentle reminder to a family member could leave them feeling loved and supported.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
T
he Carnival capital of the world and home to some of the greatest art and music in the region, Rio is a must when in South America! In fact, February is when the wild 5-day celebration of carnival usually takes place. The great thing about the carnival is that it attracts more than 500,000 foreign visitors and expresses the true essence of Brazilian culture. Singing, dancing, and partying are three key components to the festival, and you will see these parties take place day and night, before and after the carnival. The celebration begins with the crowning of the “Fat King,” King Momo, who is presented with a giant silver and gold key by the mayor. Another major component of the festival is the music. Nearly all of the music is samba music, which was invented by poor Afro-Brazilians in the early 1900s. The word Samba actually comes from an Angolan word ‘semba’ which refers to a type of ritual music. So while the Samba Parade is in full effect, you will notice many Brazilians taking pride in their roots and cultural ties to both Africa and South America. The carnival provides you with an opportunity to go crazy and dress up. So you can buy costumes, wear lots of makeup, or go all out with glitter. Have fun and make sure to prepare in advance, booking both your flight and accommodation. There are actually direct flights from Doha to Sao Paulo so your trip might not be as long as you expect.

Dine
Zona Sul is very popular for carnival, Copacabana, and Leblon is a bit more upscale.

his may be the most romantic city in South America. Not only is Buenos Aires the birthplace of tango, it is a haven of atmospheric old neighborhoods filled with amazing nightlife and dimly lit restaurants. The architecture of the city reflects a long history, and places like the Teatro Colon, which is one of the best theaters in the world; remain just as they did in 1908. The city offers a lot of activities for all kinds of interest. Instead of a traditional tour of the city, you can opt for a guided cycling tour. Before you leave, you must visit the Casa Rosada in Plaza de Mayo, which is the government’s executive branch, and houses the balcony from which Evita rallied the working class. Next, check out Calle Museo Caminito, a walkway in La Boca area that is filled with tango dancers and artists. If you really enjoy tango, then head to Esquina Carlos Gardel for a delicious dinner and tango show. If you enjoy architecture, check out Calle Florida where early 20th century buildings line a mile long pedestrian mall. The Museum of Latin American Art is a beautiful non- profit art museum and cultural center that aims to promote Latin American artists. If you have children, you can take them to Palermo Viejo where you can go to the zoo or have a beautiful picnic in the lush gardens. Lastly, take a walk down Avenida Santa Fe, where you will find many shops, boutiques, and cafes.

he economic and political capital of Chile, Santiago is a growing tourist destination. While in Santiago go to Plaza de Armas to see the famous monuments, including the Governor’s palace, then head to La Moneda where you will be in the center of Chile’s history in downtown Santiago. Not only will you see the presidential palace, you will witness the grandeur of the surrounding buildings. For souvenirs, check out Feria Artesanal Santa Lucia, and Barrio Lastarria where you will find plenty of shops. A beautiful monument in Santiago is La Chascona, the home of famed poet Pablo Neruda and his wife Matilde. The love between these two was so strong that the home was known as a romantic hideaway for the two and was later portrayed in the 1995 movie, “Il Postino.” Another interesting area is Barrio Bellavista, which is home to many artists and entertainers and boasts some of the best ethnic and local cuisine in the country. Most important to see prior to leaving is the San Cristobal Hill. You can take a funicular railway, which starts in the Bellavista area and stops at the zoo halfway up. You’ll eventually end up at the viewing area of the park near the summit of Cerro San Cristobal. At the top of the hill there will be several shops that sell Mote Con Huesillo, a drink made of dried peaches, wheat, and sugar.

beautiful city in Peru known for its proximity to the famed Machu Picchu, Cusco is a city not to be missed! Peru as a whole is known for its ties to the ancient Inca culture, which cultivated these beautiful lands and left remains to be marveled. Machu Picchu itself is one of the most beautiful sites in the country, and has more than one million tourists yearly to visit the ancient ruins along the elevated mountaintop. Considered the sister to Machu Picchu, Choquequirao is also a beautiful place filled with ancient temples and palaces, and spans on two levels. The historic center of Cusco is also a wonderful place to explore, allowing you to walk in the quant colonial town while noticing ancient ruins all along your path. You can walk in the beautiful square of Plaza de Armas and possibly stop to gaze at the wonderful architecture surrounding the historic cathedral in the center. If you want to stop by all the small towns in the country, take the Hiram Bingham Train. This train is a luxurious and fun way to explore Peru, and is comparable to the Orient Express. Many hikers come to this city to take part in the Inca Trail. A windy trail through the Andes Mountains, this route is a 4 to 5 day trek from Cusco to Machu Picchu. Other beautiful ancient ruins to see before leaving is Sacsayhuaman, the Temple of Sun (Coricancha), Tipon, and Salinas de Maras. Also be sure to stop by Pisac. Not only is this a large market great for shopping, it is also set in ancient ruins and allows you to enjoy the history of the place while engaging in modern traits.

Sebs Cheer Apparel Abdulwahab Al Ansari, owner & founder of Sebs Cheer Apparel. “My advice to anyone that is thinking about starting a new business is think outside the box.”
E
veryone has an image of a cheerleader in their mind, which is pom-poms, a pleated skirt and a big letter across the top of their uniform. This is the traditional image of a sideline cheerleader. Have you ever wondered who makes these awesome uniforms? We came across Abdulwahab Al Ansari, owner and founder of Sebs Cheer Apparel. Sebs Cheer Apparel outsources and manufactures cheer apparel from Kuwait, and is considered one of the main suppliers for providing cheer uniforms to top universities in the UK. After taking one look at his uniforms we wouldn’t mind pairing one of these active skirts with pieces from our wardrobe, actually we’ve noticed an athletic dash on the Spring/Summer 2014 runways, which is one of the top trends of the summer. We had the chance to find out how Abdulwahab started his cheer apparel business. It’s not everyday you came across a business as unique as this one, Nouriah AlShatti writes. It all began when he used to coach the Liverpool Cheerleading team in the United Kingdom, and his involvement started from his second month of starting college. Abdulwahab explains how it all started, “When I entered university in 2004, the team had just been created and there wasn’t a cheerleading team before, and they needed help with gymnastics. The girls that started up and put together the team knew that I had a background in gymnastics. It took them about two months to talk me into coming in to join on of their practice sessions. I finally gave in and I immediately got involved with coaching the gymnastics side for three years. Soon after, the girls that created the team gradated, therefore the last three years of being at university was just me coaching the entire team.” During his three years of coaching, all categories from the team would enter to compete and would always be placed within the top three competitors. He changed the team from being a society sports club to being part of the athletic union, and from there, had received the proper support and funding. When he started bringing back trophies from competitions they had won, the university began to take notice. In his final year, the team wanted to change the overall look of the uniforms. They had the pleated skirts and the generic cheer apparel and wanted to update their style. They opted for the long sleeves, spandex and really glittery materials which resemble the ice-skater look. This had all happened
Feb 86 STYLES 132
right around the time he was moving to Kuwait, and he knew there was an abundance of manufactures available back home. He thought maybe he could find something cheaper as an alternative to spending on expensive uniforms that were currently available in the UK. As soon as he returned home, he looked deeper into the subject and realized that it can be feasible and could help out a lot of teams. He explained that the first thing he did was putting up a little survey on Facebook, and got in touch with his coach friends. The response and positive feedback he received gave him the green light to go start up, because there was a need for it in the market. At the time there was only two or three companies based in the UK, and it monopolized the industry. Some companies weren’t good to their clients, the uniforms were expensive, and they also wanted to apply copyrights. As a result, the clients had limited flexibility and the customer service alone was awful. “I still remember, I received an invoice over five thousand pounds, the kits arrived and they were a different shade of navy. The old members had really dark navy blue uniforms and the new members, a royal bluish color, but they were all made from the same company. So I e-mailed the company, but they didn’t take any action,” explained Abdulwahab. When asked about the challenges he faced, he mentioned that there were bumps on the road from the very beginning. One issue was the trial and error of fabrics, trying to figure out which fabrics would work and which ones didn’t. He talked about how he made a lot mistakes, but from every mistake he figured out how to fix the problem. He explained how, “One of the first issues that popped up was when we were doing Queen Mary University’s sky blue uniform order. They performed, but towards the end, had visible sweat patches, which did not look good at all. I don’t ever remember seeing that at competitions, it was to that extent. They sent me pictures and it did not look good. I was thinking to myself, ‘where am I going to find fabric like that in Kuwait?’ Fabric that would prevent an issue like that to happen. So I went through this whole mission of finding fabrics. During my search I came across a company that would custom make spandex fabrics just for me. Based on thickness and tone. Now I work with waterproof fabrics that you can literally throw water on and it will just roll off. That solved the problem of sweat patches.” Currently, Sebs Cheer Apparel is the only company in UK that uses this innovative fabric. One of the most important things he focused on was paying attention to what the people wanted and needed. He mentioned that he himself was an unhappy client for four years, which is why he focuses on listening to what the clients need and tries to make improvements as much as he can. He also became aware of the fact that some teams were beginning to lean towards a more modern look. He noticed that they started requesting more slick and curvy designs with a lot of shiny fabrics. Also, that, “The cuts are more interesting and some of the teams that are in more artsy schools really look at the lines and ask for a certain design because it gives a more slimming effect to the body when worn, and they really put a lot of thought into where they want their lines placed.” His last words and response to considering a focal point within the Middle Eastern market, “When I was considering bringing the business to the Middle Eastern market I weighed out at all of the pros and cons, and decided that it was better to keep the focus of my business abroad for the time being. However, I recently have been contacted by a few American schools here to provide uniforms for little kids that are trying to incorporate cheerleading within their schools, but nothing has materialized yet. If there is a small market here that arises that I can tap into with regards to cheerleading, I’ll definitely consider being the supplier for sure. My advice to anyone that is thinking about starting a new business is think outside the box.” Feb 86 STYLES 133

My Baby Sprinkle Experience by Yalda Golsharifi
Baby Sprinkle; A smaller scale baby shower
where guests sprinkle the parents with little necessities for the new bundle of joy. Not as blown out as a shower, but just a light sprinkle. Usually thrown for the 2nd and/or 3rd baby.
W
hen it comes to baby showers and baby sprinkles, the best friend, or in some occasions, the mother or sister help out in hosting the welcoming event of a new baby. In my case, I had my husband host my baby sprinkle! And never would I have thought a man could pull off such a thing and help turn it into the best event I’ve ever had. 4 years ago, for my first daughter, Lilly, I had a little baby shower at my mother in law’s house, I invited only about 20 to 25 guests. I had a sushi bar from Wok n Roll, a crepe station from Lenotre, a Saj station, and a selection of pastas, appetizers like shrimps and stuffed mushrooms and mini burgers from Nino, and a variety of the best salads ever from different places. And of course lots of baby themed cupcakes for dessert from Crumbs. I was so into picking out things that I knew people would enjoy, especially since we had literally just moved back to Kuwait a couple of months before the Shower, so I wasn’t really exposed to the “it” places here yet. When it came to the goodie bags, my mother in law at the time owned Fruits and Passion, (they offered scented body and home products with all natural ingredients etc) and my sister in law Fatema was running it. So she arranged the cutest pink metallic makeup bags with a little perfume, a lip balm, and hand lotion inside all from Fruits and Passion.
Feb 86 STYLES 134
I also had some cute giveaways sent from the states, like baby themed candles and pens. I basically filled up the goodie bags! We ended up playing games all night, and winners won prizes of course! Then the best part, opening the gifts with all my friends around. But for this baby sprinkle, I thought you know what, I’ll keep it simple, no games, no goodie bags, just friends socializing and enjoying a good afternoon with some good food, family and music. Little did I know that the venue we went for would blow our minds away. After weeks of anticipating whether we should have the sprinkle at our flat or a venue, we thought it would be best to just go ahead and have it at our place. I was a bit worried because this time, my guest list was over 120 people. We hated that we had to think of crossing people out, as only 50 guests would have fit in our flat! Then, literally 5 days before the date of my baby sprinkle, The Regency Hotel happened. Hassan had arranged for us to go in and meet with the manager Russell. He was so welcoming, helpful and sweet, he showed us the Ladies Lounge and pool area, and I thought oh my god this is perfect. The space was just perfect. I had to have it there; no other place would have done it for me. We decided to go ahead, to have a little BBQ on a Friday afternoon around the pool. Something light and casual, nothing too fancy. Some
pastel pink or lilac flowers here and there would have been great. Maybe even just tapas and finger foods instead of a BBQ if it rained. (The weather forecast said it was going to rain). That was it. We didn’t even have to talk much about it, we sat at the lounge and had some tea and talked about a bunch of different and random things. I was taking it easy because you know, its just a baby sprinkle, I just wanted good ambiance and a nice place for our friends to gather. On Friday the 17th, the day of the baby sprinkle, we got ready and headed there. When we walked out to the Ladies Lounge pool area, we were so wowed that my husband and I were speechless. Not what we were expecting! I thought there was just going to be a BBQ stand and that was it! Nothing more! Let me also say, that the weather was so beautiful and sunny, not too cold for January. I felt so lucky especially after thinking it was going to rain. Anyway, so back to the pool area! There was a buffet, with everything from salads to lasagna and seafood. Right after it, there was the BBQ station, with everything grilled and super fresh! On the other side of the pool we had a pasta station (which the kids loved!). And right next to it there was a shawerma stand. I was just thinking oh my god this is really over the top for just a baby sprinkle, but hey I don’t mind! I loved it!
I’m so thankful that my husband really wanted this to go well, he put a lot of effort in trying to make it happen, and he did a great job. At the end of the day it was him who was on the phone all the time making sure everything was going as planned. It actually felt so good not being the one organizing an event! I felt so stress free! The Regency hotel is officially one of the best hotels I’ve personally experienced, (and those who know me know how picky I am with hotels). Overall I didn’t have to lift a finger, everything was done and ready, they gave me no reason or chance to even question anything. It was all taken care of, and best part of everything was that I didn’t even have to do much explaining! I loved that! What’s funny is that my initial plan was to have a winter themed baby sprinkle, at home, very cozy, with hot chocolate and some delicious comfort food. A few friends to celebrate with us, and that was it. But its funny how somehow everything changed and I ended up having a glamorous, and bigger baby sprinkle than my first baby shower. Now the flowers. The florist was truly amazing, he asked me a couple of days before the event what kind of flowers I liked and the colors I was going for. I briefly explained to him what I had in mind. And that was it. When I saw the flowers on the day of the sprinkle, I thought to myself, this was exactly what I had in mind! The exact colors and everything. Even better than I had imagined to be honest. The staff was so friendly and looked so happy to be there, which I loved, you don’t want miserable looking staff to be around on a special day. Their energy and attitude was just great. Really made us happy!
Later that day at home, Hassan, Lilly and I sat on the floor, surrounded with the gifts. We started opening them one by one. We try to get Lilly involved in everything just so she doesn’t start getting jealous or feel left out. She was opening her little sister’s gifts and was getting excited! A couple of times she did ask if the baby clothes would fit her. But I guess the most important thing is to excite her about the fact that she’s going to be a big sister and help mommy and daddy out with the new baby.
I kept telling Russell oh my god you really went all out with this, and he’d just say, “well, this is how we do it at the Regency. We always go all out!”. So impressive. Nothing like I had in mind. As fancy as it seemed, I loved that it was simple yet elegant. I specifically didn’t want anything baby themed. The only thing that was baby themed was the cake! Nothing else. It was so nice having my friends come with their kids and husbands, I loved seeing my guests enjoy their time on that sunny afternoon. The music was great, so many smiley faces, and to me the best part was seeing our daughter Lilly have so much fun with the other kids. I was too busy trying to socialize with everyone, but at least I got a chance to. If I had the sprinkle at our place, it would have been impossible to talk to friends, as I would have been running in and out of the kitchen, making sure everything is fine, food, drinks, etc. And of course, no kids! The whole point of the sprinkle was that I’d invite all my friends with their kids. Feb 86 STYLES 135

February in Los Angeles is a truly amazing time! While the rest of the country is dealing with snowstorms, we get to tan and hang out in the sun. Of course we always have the option of driving a couple of hours to go skiing in Big Bear or Mammoth Mountain. If that’s the route you prefer to take, then I suggest renting a cabin to have the best experience possible. Take a group of your friends with you and enjoy cooking by the fireplace and roasting marshmallows while you rest from a long day of skiing. Aside from skiing and tanning, another reason I love February in Los
Angeles is Valentine’s Day! February 14th, better known as Valentines Day, is a day to celebrate love with those nearest and dearest to your heart. Whether you choose to do so by buying an edible arrangement or the good old fashioned chocolate and roses, make sure to make this day as special as possible for your honey. And although it’s a day meant to celebrate love that doesn’t mean it has to be limited to couples. In fact, many of my friends choose to give each other chocolates to show appreciation and caring for simply being a good shoulder to lean on in times of need. And many parents give their children decorated heart shaped cookies to make them feel special and loved. The great thing is that all the bakeries are filled with heart shaped cookies, chocolates, muffins, donuts, and cakes! So no matter what your sweet tooth leads you to, you wont be disappointed. What’s great about Feb 14th is the limitless possibility of activities you can do in LA! Everything and anything goes! Have you ever thought to take a hot air balloon ride? No problem! Use this holiday as an excuse to do something romantic and adventurous with your mate. Afraid of heights? Don’t worry! You can go to Disneyland and have a cute fairytale experience. You would be surprised how many couples actually go to Disneyland on Valentines Day! I guess it truly is the most magical place on earth. Another idea is to keep it simple and traditional. A nice dinner at one of the upscale restaurants will do. But reserving ahead of time is very important. Many restaurants become fully committed weeks in advance. Some of the most popular restaurants for Valentines Day in LA are Mastros, Spago, Cut, Boa, Nobu, The Little Door, and anywhere else with dim lighting.
I personally think a romantic weekend getaway would be the best! So take a drive down the coast and head to Bacara in Santa Barbara. Or head to the famous Pelican Hill resort in Orange County. Not only will you have a private villa overlooking the sea, you’ll have access to a beautiful golf course and an award-wining spa. If you want to stay local in LA, the Fairmont in Santa Monica or the Beverly Hills Hotel both have gorgeous bungalows that will provide you with privacy and a beautiful atmosphere. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Get creative with your plans and use the holiday as a way to mix things up. Maybe try something out of your normal routine. Not only will you have fun, your spouse will probably love the idea and appreciate the effort! So ladies, take the reign on this Valentine’s Day and show the man in your life what romance is truly about! I wish you all a beautiful Valentine’s Day!

ver since the internet has declared a takeover, online shopping has become a popular method, and online stores have become a booming business today. Online shopping not only saves time, fuel, and energy; it also gives you the opportunity, thanks to its 24/7 availability, to shop at your own pace and convenience. You don’t have to wait in line just to buy your merchandise. Another online shopping advantage witnessed is that you can shop without hassle on hours of finding the items that you are looking for; you would not even stand in long lines at the cashier to pay your bills. And the list goes on. However, and despite the success of purchasing through online shopping stores, it also has its drawbacks. The most obvious of them all is the inability to personally check the item. You can’t touch the item or feel the material before buying. And you surely can’t be sure it is the right size or if it fits you well. Of course online shopping can be a very fun experience, when everything works perfectly. But how about when things go wrong? How about when you find your four digit designer dress too tight, too lose, or too long? Trendscope February 2014 Find out what the stars have in store for you this month
Aquarius
January 20 - February 18
The Sun’s return to your sign on this month kicks off both your birthday month and a new solar year, with a chance for new beginnings and over time, a chance to develop new intentions and a new look to match. Don’t be in too much of a hurry to make any firm stands, especially on the fashion front. For it’s not until Venus, planet of beauty returns that you’ll get a sense of what does and doesn’t suit and that’s still some time off.
Pisces
January 20 - February 18
Having moved into the New Year with the Moon in your career sector, now that he’s come full circle and has returned to once more sharpen your professional instincts and engage your imagination, you’re able to make sense of many of the intentions you moved into the year with. It’s a mix of hindsight and the perspective gained from getting a feel for this new professional year that gives you a chance to redefine your objectives and get your bearings.
Aries
March 21 - April 19
As the focus shifts to more social matters this month and life starts opening up, there should be more demands on your wardrobe and even the potential for fashion emergencies. Yet with Venus, planet of beauty remaining focused on the same things she’s been focused on for nearly 3 months now, your fashion choices are likely to become easier and your tastes, likes and dislikes not only well defined, but with the confidence to be yourself.
Taurus
April 20 - May 20
While your new professional year is starting to speed up in an extraordinary way, much quicker than in previous years, it’s too soon to cement a new professional look or image. Not only will the professional journey continue to unfold for the next 6 months, it’s not until Venus, planet of beauty returns to your career sector in early March that you’ll have a sense of what does and doesn’t fit. Instead you’ll have more fun exploring your options.
Gemini
May 21 - June 20
As Venus, planet of beauty spends her last full week in retrograde motion in a passionate and change focused part of your chart, she is intensifying her efforts to encourage you to make up for lost time. It’s where you move into the New Year with the intention of big changes or even for a makeover, that the door is still open to a change of heart. If you’re already veering away from bold intentions refuse to sweat the small stuff, making the changes that you’re comfortable with.
Cancer
June 21 - July 22
As you start to get a better sense of the kind of dynamics in play in 2014, chances are you’re still procrastinating when it comes to a new look or fully embracing the season’s new options. There may even be a fear that the season will be over before you’ve made up your mind and maybe you should flag this season away all together. The problem is the expectations you’re putting on yourself. You’re far better putting some money aside, for when or if the mood takes you, refusing to create fashion emergencies where there are none.
Leo
July 23 - August 22
You have a chance to not so much take your work hat off this month but at least have it on part time, with your personal life becoming a lot more important. Our fashion choices and our wardrobe is based on our lifestyle, reflecting your needs and as life opens up and diversifies, this will change your fashion needs. Situations where you stand in front of your wardrobe and you can’t find anything to wear is not the problem you think it is and more a sign that life is opening up.
Virgo
August 21 - September 22
While your new working year is starting to take up a lot more of your time and focus, there is some serious resistance from fun and playful forces and leading that charge is Venus, planet of beauty. Venus should have returned to your work sector last year, but is instead staying back in a fun, colorful and playful part of your chart. While Venus can’t halt the march of your new professional year, she can keep a sense of fun alive, especially in your fashion choices.
Libra September 23- October 22
While work/life balance issues once more rear their heads this month, this will be in a now familiar way, allowing you to see that as life opens up and diversifies and especially if you want to have it all, that you have to put in the effort to make the right balance. Venus, planet of beauty is sitting on the side of the fence that is keeping life chilled out and relaxed, favoring those times when you get to dress down.
Scorpio
September 23- October 22
As life starts to become more complicated, the last thing that you need is to create fashion emergencies where there are none, with a need to make life as user friendly as possible. With Venus, planet of beauty now in her third month in a smart and intellectually savvy part of your chart, you should know by now how to dress smart and how to get the maximum impact and results for the least possible effort.
Sagittarius
November 22 - December 20
On a long term mission to boost your confidence Venus, planet of beauty is taking even more of an interest this month, at a time when other distractions are making her influence more obvious. With a sense of nostalgia in the air you’re able to look to the past for inspiration, looking back over old photos or memories, to looks, an image or a particular outfit that used to make you feel the way you want to feel now. It’s time to take a nostalgic trip down fashion’s memory lane.
Capricorn
December 21 - January 19
As your birthday month comes to an end all eyes will be on the future and on the new solar year you’re moving into, all that is except for Venus, planet of beauty. Not only will Venus remain in your sign, taking until early March to fully explore and cement what you want your new look for this new year to be, but still in retrograde motion your focus is still likely to be nostalgic.
