Add a pop of leopard into your outfit. This is a good way if you want to start smoothly, maybe just a scarf or a head wrap to spice up your outfit. A leopard print handbag will also look good with a simple outfit.

Many people get confused on how to wear leopard prints, some just forget about it altogether because they don’t want to do it the wrong way. Well, here are a few tips on how to wear it:

DOLCE & GABBANA Embossed Leather Top Handle Bag [luisaviaroma.com]

If you decide to go with a shirt or any other piece of clothing, pair it up with neutrals like black, white, beige, etc. Jeans are a good idea too. SAINT LAURENT Sequin embellished Silk Chiffon Dress [mytheresa.com]

4

JUICY COUTURE Leopard Print Skirt [Juicy Couture Boutique]

5

If you’re more on the wild side, pairing your leopard print attire with screaming block colors can also work if worn correctly. Red, green, and fuchsia will are good color combos! However, remember to tone down the make-up and accessories if you choose to go with this look.

Lastly, if you want to stand out why not pair your leopard print with another print? Let’s take stripes for example. Black and white stripes are considered neutral and would transform your outfit to class chic immediately.

JUST CAVALLI Jersey Leopard Print Dress [stylebop.com]

MOSCHINO CHEAP AND CHIC Cropped Leopard-Print Stretch Pants [net-a-porter.com]

Balmain

2 3

Avoid overwhelming people with the print! It looks best when worn as one item, not leopard all over. We don’t want people thinking you’re heading to a Halloween party. Stick to accessories at first then try out a dress or maybe a shirt.

CHARLOTTE OLYMPIA Pandora Leopard Box Clutch [mytheresa.com]

CASADEI Pnyskin Leopard Blade Pumps [luisaviaroma.com]

Now all you have to do is start the hunt for your leopard attire.

Mad About Madballs Jeremy Scott X Longchamp Fabulous or fearsome? Gorgeous or gruesome? The answer, surely, is both. One thing’s certain: Le Pliage® Madballs, Jeremy Scott’s latest limited edition of Longchamp’s iconic foldable travel bag, is set to start a style debate. Drawing on his encyclopaedic knowledge of pop culture, the American designer took inspiration from Madballs, the bouncy rubber balls with horrendous faces that became a playground craze in the 1980s. Madballs sweaters were a standout at Jeremy Scott’s recent New York fashion show, and now the impish designer has had two of his favourite characters printed onto the canvas of Le Pliage®. Will you dare to carry one?

Introduces The #DKNYRamadan Capsule Collection 2014 Donna Karan popularized the concept of the capsule collection in 1985 and today has nurtured the brand’s evolution by identifying the cultural sensibilities of DKNY’s global consumer market as well as reaching out to fashion forward communities on a more personalized level. In addition to The Ramadan Capsule campaign, the launch of the DKNY Middle East website fortifies their position in the regional market and in their ongoing plans for expansion. The summer capsule collection includes a selection of items that represent DKNY’s striking color palette and key looks for the season. It is cool, feminine and authentic - created for women that aspire to a more personalized style for the holy month of Ramadan. An exclusive photo shoot accompanying the DKNY Ramadan Capsule was shot in Dubai by Emirati photographer Saeed Al Khalifa and was a spirited collaboration between leading New York stylists for DKNY and two social media sweethearts of the Middle East - Yalda Golsharifi and Tamara Al Gabbani. The bloggers selected apparel from the summer collection to create a unique set of looks for Ramadan, all of which convey a fresh, urban style, synonymous with the brand’s identity. It’s No Pretty Little Lie… Ashley Benson is the new face of H&M Divided! Hey fan girls, here’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for, Ashley Benson is officially the new face of H&M Divided. The junior line is perfect for Ashley as it is similar to her taste in clothing in real life and on screen. Here’s what Ashley Benson has to say about the upcoming collection and also a few style tips for how to dress it up for certain occasions. How was it to shoot the campaign in Los Angeles for H&M? It was so fun shooting this campaign. We shot it on sunset Blvd. in LA at Siren studios. We were onthe rooftop mostly so it was so hot out. But so much fun. And the photographer, Mariano, let’s just say it was love at first sight. What is your favorite piece that you show in the campaign? My favorite piece from the campaign. I have a few. I loved all the cropped tops. And high waisted skirts. Loved all the graphic tees. Everything was super cute. How would you describe your personal style? My personal style varies a bit. I guess it depends on how I’m feeling that day. I love to dress down and comfortable. But also love a good chance to get dressed up. I always have my leather jacket and a pair of boots with me. What is the must have accessory? Must have accessory is a leather jacket and a good bag. What do you wear on a gala night? Hmmm for a gala night I would always be down for a long gown. Always a good excuse to really dress up.

J/A 91 STYLES 60

What do you wear on a night out with your friends? On a night out with friends, I’ll wear jeans with heels. Probably all black. usually in black most of the time. What are your best style tips for women? Best style tips for women. Ummm wear what makes you feel comfortable and what makes you feel confident. You should always dress for you and no one else. Tell us about your greatest holiday memory. Greatest holiday memory. Last year for Fourth of July I went to Positano Italy. It was so nice. Anytime I can get away I always want to go to Europe. I love it there. You share beauty advice on your official web site, what are your latest tips? Latest beauty tips, always wash your face. I love my clarisonic. Especially because I wear so much make up during the week for work. It gets every ounce of makeup off. I love coconut oil. I put it all over my face and body and in my hair. It helps condition your hair and skin. One of my new favorites. What action do you do in order to save the planet and think sustainably? Turning off my lights, not letting water run while brushing my teeth, recycling and making an effort to reuse as much as I can of an item before throwing it out.

The Iconoclasts Cindy Sherman Since the mid 1970s, Cindy Sherman has redefined boundaries as an image-maker and filmmaker. Using herself as a character actress/model/ wardrobe mistress/make-up artist/ hairstylist/director/author/cinematographer and photographer, Cindy Sherman is arguably the greatest living female artist.Best known for her photographic portraits, where Cindy Sherman herself assumes the role of different individuals, both female and male, she frequently presents herself as an icon, yet iconoclastically questions the role of women in the media. Exhibited widely and internationally —including a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 2012— Cindy Sherman was the recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 1995, the so-called ‘Genius Award’. She is also the proud owner of a parrot. J/A 91 STYLES 62

Christian Louboutin Raised among women, Christian Louboutin developed at a very young age his love for femininity and a fascination for the iconic lines of high heels. After teenage years full of the spirit of Parisian nightlife, showgirls and adventurous travels that all still inspire his work to this date, he made a job out of his passion by opening his first boutique in Paris in 1991.The brand now has 90 stores around the world and has added to its repertoire Bags and a Men’s line. With a continuously renewed enthusiasm, Christian Louboutin conquered the heart of women and made his trademark red sole a symbol of seduction around the world.

Karl Lagerfeld As a fashion designer and creative director, it is not an over-estimate to say that Karl Lagerfeld has revolutionized his field. His iconoclastic approach in redefining fashion, particularly predicting and understanding the importance of ready-to-wear and knowing how to revitalize and reinvent brands, could be seen as the blueprint by which many of the fashion houses operate today. Beginning his career at 17, working for Pierre Balmain and later Jean Patou and Chloé, while immersing himself in and expanding his knowledge of history, art, architecture, music and particularly 18th century French furniture, has given Karl Lagerfeld the unusual combination of being preeminent designer, fashion troubleshooter and contemporary Renaissance man. Collaborating with Fendi since 1965, and working for many years as its creative director, has meant that label’s perpetual reinvention and constantly evolving, contemporary nature. Since 1983, Karl Lagerfeld has held astonishing tenure as the chief designer and creative director of the house of Chanel. A true icon in his own right, as well as an iconoclast, Karl Lagerfeld never rests —amongst other pursuits he heads his own house, is an accomplished photographer, sits on the LVMH Prize jury in search of young talent, is a book publisher and the proud owner of a cat.

Frank Gehry

Going beyond existing ideas of structural definition, utilizing the unexpected and everyday, making humble materials such as plywood, chain-link and corrugated metal siding into forms simultaneously spectacular and modest… Frank Gehry could perhaps be seen as the ultimate, iconoclastic architect at work today.

Marc Newson

Rei Kawakubo

Initially studying sculpture and jewelry design before being self-taught in industrial design, Marc Newson’s route might be seen to have contributed to his iconoclastic approach and the embracing of a distinctly personal design signature. Now, widely acknowledged as the most influential industrial designer of his generation, Marc Newson has worked in numerous industries ranging from aerospace and technology to furniture and fashion. Instinctively and personally driven in his approach, iconoclastically collapsing the boundaries between disciplines and idiosyncratically embracing a wide range of design work as a totality, Marc Newson could be seen as a unique figure in his field. His Lockheed Lounge piece, initially made when the designer was only 23 years old and had just graduated, has gone on to become one of the true design icons of our era.

After originally studying art and literature, Rei Kawakubo quickly changed tack, working for a textile company and then becoming a self-taught fashion designer. Believing that there are no limits to creativity in the fashion process, she has constantly radically pursued and iconoclastically achieved perpetual progress in her field, breaking the rules and forming new ones that the entire industry has paid attention to.These features have become the hallmarks of Comme des Garçons, the label that Rei Kawakubo founded in 1969 and incorporated as a company in 1973. Rei Kawakubo has an input into all areas of the creative process, from graphics, advertising and store interiors to designing and making clothes and accessories; each is inextricably linked. In 1981 she staged her first, and now legendary, Paris show for Comme des Garçons. After an initial outcry, her iconoclastic aesthetic and her love of black changed the wider global — and more commonly perceived— notion of beauty in fashion forever. Rei Kawakubo called her label Comme des Garçons —‘Like the Boys’— just because she liked the sound of it.

Pre-Fall 2014 Collection For the Pre-Fall Collection, Riccardo Tisci Showcases geometrical Bauhaus shapes with ethnic patterns, an evolution from the women’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection. Tisci pushes the boundary between masculinity and femininity as seen in a wood frame print top paired with a long pleated wool skirt accented by triangle cut-outs. The mosaic pixel print, inspired by Gustav Klimt’s use of bright colors, is worn as a men’s pantsuit or mixed as a full-look s in dresses, tops and skirts. Red, Beige and black intertwine with earthy tones of okra, copper and saffron. The horizontal striped top and skirt in knitted jacquard juxtaposes a bikers men’s coat. The pyramid bags in mink and leather adopt a taller shape for a more urban look. The new Rave bag is paired with a printed and sequinsembroidered dress.

The Paris-Dallas Pre-Fall 2014 Collection The Paris-Dallas 2013/14 collection brought up memories and nostalgia from pre-Civil War Texas to the refinement of early 19th century America. Karl wanted to bring the history back to life. The Wild West was shown in terms of brilliant details that showcase expert craftsmanship and impeccable taste. The collection featured embroidery, feathers, fringe, pleats and frills. Lagerfeld expertly showed a feminine twist to the typical Dallas home-on-the-range style. Suits consisted of a loose-fitting jacket with fringe embellished with stars and a mid-calf cowgirl skirt to be worn over boots. The urban yet unrestricted silhouette is topped with thick woolen ponchos and capes, winter coats fastened at the waist and worn over jackets, a leather topstitched cowboy shirt worn with pants and a leather coat with fringe detail. Eveningwear showed beautiful gowns in velvet and tulle. It also included satin shirts with flared sleeves and pleated skirts with a little bit of lace. All these were topped off with delicately embroidered tops. The basic Chanel color palette of white, beige, red, navy, and black is enhanced with more browns, grays, and some pink accents too. The little black jacket features Wild West shoulder pads. Tweed, leather, knit, denim, cashmere and muslin are speckled with Native American geometric symbols and stars –a favorite Chanel motif, and a nod here to the “Star-Spangled Banner.” Accessories are also given a romantic western treatment: bags and gloves with fringe detail, branded purses, Civil-War-era-inspired Stetson hats, pantyhose branded with a trompe l’œil cowboy boot print, and mid-calf and knee-high boots set to take on open prairies and city streets.

Jimmy Choo Introduces Choo.08o in Conjunction with Pre-Fall 2014 Collection

J/A STYLES 76

Jimmy Choo, under Creative Director Sandra Choi, introduces CHOO.08O a new classification to address the ever changing modern woman and her increasingly fast-paced life. With Sandra Choi’s style aesthetic now spearheading the design, Pre-Fall 14 heralds an evolving direction with a collection that speaks to the edgy spirit of the brand. Originating from Sandra’s personal style aesthetic, CHOO.08O features a wardrobe of shoes such as Biker boots, brogues, smoking slippers and trainers all with the signature Jimmy Choo personality. The name CHOO.08O takes its inspiration from the brand’s creative centre in London. With the design studio positioned on the longitude of -0.08 O, CHOO.08 O refers to a new orientation, a shifting dynamic that pivots the alignment from that of the high heel to a new centre of gravity, one with a greater sense of movement, freedom, and a new energy. This numerical reference codifies the inspiration in London and reaffirms the city’s dynamism as the heartbeat for this new aesthetic. CHOO.08O includes some of Jimmy Choo’s beloved styles, including the Biker boot, Demi, a slip-on skater shoe in matte black python or antique brushed gold finish, and Wheel, the signature smoking slipper. These styles are now complemented by a full range of styles. New for Pre-Fall is Marlin a winklepicker Rocker boot with a contrasting centre of snake detail, Mackay, a chunky heeled T-bar shoe with zipper detailing, and Harley, an urban roper boot with a lustrous distressed finish.

Heritage Meets High-Fashion

Styles talks with Head of Design at Aigner, Christian Becks Christian Alexander Beck learned classic tailoring as a first step in his career. After graduating with a degree in fashion design at a young age, he started working for renowned fashion brands such as Burberry and JOOP! where he gained valuable first experiences. In 2006 Christian Beck moved on to work as an accessory designer for the German luxury label Goldpfeil. In May 2008, Christian Beck became part of the leather lifestyle brand Aigner where he was responsible for leather goods. Two years later he was appointed Head of Leather & Accessories. In early 2012, he took over the entire creative responsibility as the Head of Design at Aigner. Styles: Aigner is a brand with great history. Is it difficult to create something new and follow old tradition at the same time? Christian Beck: Aigner turns fifty in 2015 and we have a great deal of history and tradition to work with. It is an advantage to have so much history to take inspiration from, almost like having a strong family behind you. Each season presents a new challenge to find a harmonic balance between the Aigner DNA and the latest fashion trends, but it is a challenge that we love to achieve. S: What is most valuable for the women while choosing such an important accessory as a bag? CB: The Aigner woman knows what she wants out of life. She is strong and independent. She identifies with quality and timeless designs and chooses to show class with a horseshoe logo. S: What are the main features of Aigner’s leather goods? CB: Aigner’s main features are tradition and quality but we are also acutely aware of the requirements and trends of the latest fashions. S: It’s not easy to impress clientele these days. The market is filled with a big variety of famous brands. Could you tell us please, why women are always loyal to Aigner? CB: Our clients have developed a strong connection and loyalty to Aigner over the years. The Aigner brand has become an integral part of their personal lives and a faithful friend with timeless worth.

J/A 91 STYLES 80

S: Tell us more about your new collection and of course about Cybill bag. CB: This model is a homage to the unmistakable accessories of the 1970´s and is dedicated to Sibylle Schön, CEO of Aigner. It combines traditional, Italian craftsmanship with the requirements of a modern business handbag that’s available in a multitude of bold colors. Whether you are attending meetings, lifestyle events or business lunches – she is always by your side. S: What inspired you to create such a bright and colourful palette for Spring/Summer 2014 bags collection? CB: “Brazilian Beats” is the motto of our Spring/Summer 2014 collection. From street culture to the Amazon; this collection takes you on a journey into the heart of Brazil. The colors of this leather collection echoes the intense and varied hues of South America. S: Tell us about women who wears an Aigner Spring/Summer 2014 bag? CB: The collection embodies the beauty and power of South American woman. Woman who are confident and empowered are likely to wear the Cybill bag. However, no matter the personality or character, a Cybill bag can inject a little bit of the South American feistiness into your life. S: Everything changes very fast in the world of fashion. Is it the same about the bags? Can we say that the bag of certain shape and color is not fashionable today? CB: Generally fashion knows no true or false. We are always watching trends closely, but fortunately Aigner does not have to follow every upcoming fashion gimmick. S: Each designer, creating a new collection, should make a choice between own creative ideas and customer’s demands. How do you manage this? CB: I know the demands of our international clients very well. Every demand has its right and should be taken seriously. The Aigner leather collection has a wide spectrum – there is enough space for high-fashion and heritage.

Eye Candy on Candice As we tour around Africa and look at different designers, let’s not neglect other talents such as our dear Candice Swanepoel. Candice, who you may recognize from Victoria’s Secret, is a South African model that came in 10th on the Forbes top-earing models list! Why all that popularity you might ask? Well, this blue eyed beauty’s resume includes numerous covers and editorials and also walking the runway for some of the biggest names in fashion. Swanepoel’s earnings were estimated at $3.3 million. She started with Victoria’s Secret in the year 2007 and she was the first South-African model to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Candice did a lot of work in fashion but mostly lingerie and swimwear. Makes sense since she was ranked 6th in the Top Sexiest Models list by models.com. Some of the covers Candice was featured in were Australian, Brazilian, Mexican, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, and Italian Vogue. Also a couple of Elle covers and a couple of GQ covers too. Some advertisements include Nike, Diesel, Guess?, Tom Ford, True Religion, and Versace. She’s also walked for DVF, Elie Saab, Chanel, Fendi, Oscar de la Renta, Christian Dior, and many more too. Now her work for Victoria’s

J/A 91 STYLES 82

Secret is another story. She was the featured model in the 2010 “SWIM” catalog that created a lot of buzz. Other models that were alongside her were Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Behati Prinsloo, and Erin Heatherton. That was the same year she was awarded her “wings” and was officially made a Victoria’s Secret Angel. Candice was chosen to wear the Fantasy Bra in the 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. It was worth $10 million and was created by Mouawad. The bra and belt included 4,200 different gems. Rubies, diamonds, sapphires, you name it!

Getting a little bit more personal, Candice was born in Mooi River in South Africa. Her family was African of Dutch origin. She speaks English, Afrikaans, and Portuguese. Swanepoel met her Portuguese boyfriend in Paris, Hermann Nicoli when she was 17 and dated ever since. Being a Victoria’s Secret Angel had it perks but Candice wants more, she mentioned that she wanted to be taken more seriously as a model. A few months back she went a bit overboard and dyed her hair platinum blonde. When interpreting why she went for that, people in the media started commenting that she wanted to

be taken as a serious model not just a Victoria’s Secret lingerie model. However that doesn’t mean she isn’t happy where she is. Some of her closest friends are fellow VS angels and models such as Behati and Rosie. Lastly, this model is on the rise. There’s no stopping for Candice Swanepoel! Since the age of 16 until 5 seconds ago she’s continuously surprising us with all the photo-shoots, editorials, and charity work on the side too. We recently came across an article where she was rumored to be leaving VS. However, they turned out to be false. That was a relief! Imagine tuning in the annual VS fashion show and not seeing our favorite angel taking over the runway with her flawless hair, perfect figure, and oh-soinnocent smile! That’s Candice Swanepoel for you.

the PIECE

This isn’t just a handbag; it’s a piece of art. We have no idea how Mr. Lagerfeld was inspired to build this beauty but we love it. This saddle-like bag is perfect to throw in your things and grab it and go, while also making a huge statement at the same time. It’s one of those bags that even if you’re in a football jersey with fluorescent leggings, the attention would still be on this masterpiece! The Chanel Cruise 2014 Dallas Collection is currently available at Chanel stores worldwide. Go grab it while you can!

Masterpiece Square Wheel in Pink Pearl A Square That Revolves A square wheel? It sounds a crazy concept, especially when you consider that it was expected to turn and interface with another wheel located adjacent and that second wheel was clover-shaped. However, Michel Vermot, a watchmaker and engineer at Maurice Lacroix, invented this concept. The teeth on the two unusually shaped wheels would have to mesh perfectly to ensure reliable operation. Each tooth would require a unique angle to engage faultlessly without any loss in power transmission. Initially, the technology to create the unusually shaped, and very complex, wheels did not exist and the idea was simply recorded on paper. When it was actually launched, the Masterpiece Square Wheel (formerly the Masterpiece Roue Carrée) astounded the world of watch making with its inno-vative depiction of time. The open-worked square wheel revolves to indicate a value, proving not only stylish but legible and reliable too.The hypnotic effect of the moving components, communicating time with a playful flourish of style, has won many admirers. Clean and simple in appea-rance, the Masterpiece Square Wheel has become an iconic member of the Masterpiece family. With its patented design, the Masterpiece Square Wheel remains the only watch with a functional square wheel mechanism. Now the story continues with a new model, the Masterpiece Square Wheel “Pink Pearl”.

Jean Paul Gaultier Fashion – is the freedom to express. And the French couture house of Jean Paul Gaultier courts this art with much intensity and soul. It is for his “unconventional” fashion antics that Monsieur Gaultier is in true element the “wild child” of fashion. Daring it up by using older men, full-figured women, pierced and heavily tattooed models in his shows and campaigns that has earned him both criticism and enormous acclamation. Fashion after all isn’t supposed to be a portal of just daffodils and roses. It is also the “real” elements of life - be it ugly or a silhouette of sins – it is the art of expressing oneself and not just about playing it safe. In keeping true to his sculpts of independence and emotion, Jean Paul Gaultier has gone very sailor with the debut collection of timepieces. The new timepieces are each a concoction of retro meets modern. The timepieces are all Swiss Made and swell-up with elements that are each inspired by the crafter’s strokes of genius. This collection will mark Jean Paul Gaultier’s debut in the world of Swiss horology and the timepieces are now available at Trafalgar stores.

The display will be held in the Sala del Fiorino of the Galleria di Arte Moderna of Palazzo Pitti in Florence, Italy. The exhibition opens on June 19 and will be open to the public until September 7, 2014. The exhibition will feature 18 exceptional works from the house of Damiani, each of which has received the prestigious Diamonds International Awards. Considered to be the Academy Awards of the jewelry industry, Damiani has the distinct honor of being the only jeweler in the world to have received so many awards. The brand’s Masterpiece collections, which were created as a tribute to the 90th anniversary will also be displayed at the exhibition, alongside other award-winning designs. The Masterpieces collection comprises ten exclusive models made in nine copies each, nine of which trace the history of Damiani since the 1920s. Some of the exciting designs include the Cascade from the 30s, the Bloom from the 70s, and the Damianissima from 2010. The legacy of Damiani dates back to 1924, when the company was established in the heart of the goldsmith district of Valenza Po in North West Italy by Enrico Grassi Damiani. His marvelous skills as a goldsmith quickly became apparent, and he became the choice jeweler for important families. His children and grandchildren continued the family’s honored tradition by joining the company. In November 2007, Damiani scaled new heights by getting listed on the Milan Stock Exchange. Presently Gabriella Damiani is Honorary Chairman of the company, while Guido is President and CEO. Silvia and Giorgio are Vice Presidents at Damiani. Today, Damiani offers stunning occasion-wear pieces, as well as dainty and chic everyday lines.

The Book To celebrate the occasion, Rizzoli publications will also launch the much-awaited book ‘Damiani - Alchimia del Desiderio’ (Damiani - Alchemy of Desire) to coincide with the exhibition dates. African fashion has been talked about and referenced for years but no one ever stopped and thought where it all started and how it evolved to what it is today. The first thing that comes to my mind is animal prints; they have taken over the runway season after season. Another aspect is how Western clothing has inspired their traditional wear too. Africa is divided into many countries and we’re digging deep into the motherland to find out more.

n North Africa, for example Egypt and Morocco, their traditional wear is influenced by the Middle Eastern “daraa’” but they call it Jelabiya. It is a type of kaftan that’s very breezy and suits the weather conditions well. In other parts such as Nigeria women tend to wear head ties with their Senegalese kaftan and the famous boubou. They can be plain or colorful same as the kaftans and are worn prominently all around the regions. The designs may differ but they have the same concept. In East Africa, women usually wear the kanga and the gomesie. The kanga is a large piece of printed cotton fabric that is wrapped around the body to cover all parts. Whilst the gomesies are heavily embroidered shirts. In South Africa, they are known to wear the shirts they are famous for which is the Madiba shirt. The same with Zimbabwe and their safari shirt. Lastly, in the Horn of Africa, primarily Ethiopia, women wear the habesha kemis that is a short flow printed kaftan sometimes having embroidery too. Now reviewing the history and looking through pictures we can instantly spot which designers chose this area as inspiration for their lines and collections. The fashion industry is a 400 billion dollar industry in the U.S. Our obsession is continuously fed by the media, stores, ads, people on the streets, it is an industry no one can escape. When looking at inspiration, European influence in fashion is said to be the cornerstone of the fashion empire, therefore neglecting the rest of the world. Let’s pause for a second and think about the material used, prints printed, and accessories used to complete these so called European influenced collections. If you were asked to create a mood board that just describes the word “Africa” in terms of fashion you’d have a pile of colorful ethnic fabrics and a few headpieces perhaps. We never realized that there is a lot more than that. African influence introduced vibrant designs and well-constructed outfits that are staples in our wardrobes.

Some African designers have used their heritage and also modern day clothing, as their inspiration to their collections, here are a few designers we came across that we loved: Korto Momolu: Korto is a Liberian designer who had joined Project Runway’s fifth season. Her designs were bold and “in your face” but in a nice ethnic way. She always used vibrant colors and rich fabrics and the African influence was clear in all her designs. Samilia Colar: Colar is a Nigerian accessory designer who is famous for her handbags and accessories. She is known for her colorful designs and her handcrafted pieces.

Josephyn Akioyamen: Josephyn is a Nigerian-Canadian designer that is definitely known for her designs influenced by her Nigerian roots. The colors and texture she used in her designs prove that. She started out in 2009 and is progressing in the fashion industry tremendously.

Back to the global industry, models in New York, Milan, London are marching on the catwalk to an African Beat! How? Well, let’s start with the basic animal prints. Designers such as Roberto Cavalli and Dolce and Gabbana have staples in their collections that are produced every season, what are some of these staples? Animal prints! From Dolce’s leopard prints to Roberto’s snakes and tiger prints. As Diane Vreeland had said “I’ve never met a leopard print I didn’t like.” Diane was the woman who popularized animal print, when YSL showcased them early on she pushed them to the public. Other designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg also showed a lot of African inspiration for her Spring/Summer 2014 collection. DVF created a “tribal tattoo desert sugar” wrap dress, she used fabrics from Lamu and Zanzibar to create it. Also, Elbaz showed a lot of bead neckpieces and feathers at Lanvin’s Fall/Winter 2010 show. These designers amongst many others are trying to mix African techniques with high-end fashion.

African fashion has always been a source of inspiration for some of the biggest names in fashion. Gucci had a few zebra prints, whilst Burberry Porsum included wax print dresses. Michael Kors went all out with an entire safari park on the runway. As you can see, the influence is all around us we just need to grab it and read into it. There’s more to the leopard print than just the dress and there’s more history in the beads in that neckpiece than we would ever imagine. As a fashion critic once said, “Imitation may be the highest form of flattery, but it’s time for the fashion establishment to give African designers the credit and exposure they deserve rather than just ripping of their heritage.

From the Streets of L.A. In a city with a multitude of cultures, it is no surprise that Los Angeles has a plethora of African influence. African American culture has had such an impact in L.A. over the years that everything from music to fashion to food with African roots can be found throughout the city. One of the most interesting areas in L.A. is Little Ethiopia. This little African haven can be found in the center of the city on Fairfax just south of Wilshire. The first time I went there I was astonished to see the authenticity of the area. There are several traditional restaurants with typical Ethiopian cuisine. The restaurants are decorated in African style and all the wait staff is originally from Ethiopia! This might not seem like a big deal but if you’ve been to L.A. then you have witnessed the Mexican chefs at a sushi restaurant and the European chefs at a Mexican restaurant, so the authenticity of the staff being from the country of origin is a huge plus!

Dynamic Dazzlers

Once you finish your meal, you will notice several shops on the same street with a choice of fabrics for clothing, decorative pieces for the home, and herbal remedies for ailments. If you enjoy African culture you will definitely not be disappointed by your findings. A friend of mine had decided to have an African themed party and was able to cater from one of the restaurants, decorate her venue with authentic African fabrics and furnishings, and provide her guests with traditional Ethiopian clothing to wear at the event. The prices are also fairly reasonable, so much so, that you will actually feel like you are in Africa, and aren’t being sold items that have been shipped across the world at an inflated cost.

If you want to understand African culture and experience the essence of what it is to be African then check out the California African American Museum in downtown Los Angeles. This museum not only has a large art exhibit, it also has live performances depicting traditional folklore and tribal dances. In addition, they also tend to bring famous African American celebrities to promote African culture and shed light on some traditions that are still upheld in the community. Throughout the year there are many festivals celebrating African Culture. In fact, next month the famous Watts Summer Festival will have a carnival, ethnic food, and an array of performances showcasing African American culture. In the fall and winter months, the Pan African Film Festival, Hollywood African American film festival, and Leimert Park Village African Art and Music Festival all celebrate the great impact African American culture has had on the art and film community in Los Angeles. These events lead up to Black history month in February and are a great way to experience and understand the impact the black community has had in both Hollywood and in Los Angeles as a whole. If you simply don’t feel like going to a festival or museum, then head to Venice Beach. This area was birthed on Rastafarian culture coming from both Jamaican and African roots. The concept of ‘one love’, freedom of individuality, and an overall laidback approach to life came as a result of the ethnic struggle of black vs. white in the U.S. Bob Marley was a huge advocate for peace, love, and understanding between the two races and as such still has a huge impact on the community in Los Angeles. Various forms of graffiti art, and music preaching equality can be found in Venice Beach. Take a stroll down the boardwalk and find what appeals to your taste. Again, many beautiful art pieces and tribal clothing can be found in this area. And if you happen to be a fan of reggae, you will find up and coming musicians and hear some great music as you

Next time you try to put on those shades to shield your soul in order to blend in, remember that more people are drawn to your ethereal beauty when mystique is created.

Olivia Palerm o

We wear them now during spring, summer, fall and winter to accessorize an OOTD (outfit of the day). But what about when we feel under the weather or need to make a quick run to the corner store or don’t want to be being seen on some days? Of course, we don our favorite sunglasses. When we wear sunglasses our vision is slightly impaired and lighting becomes dim. Figures appear muted due to the effect of the sunglasses. This may unconsciously tell your brain that onlookers rarely notice you because you now rarely notice them thru sunglasses. However, according to research sunglasses have the opposite effect. Onlookers tend to notice the person in a pair of sunglasses because of the current celeb-culture. They wonder if the person is a celebrity of some sort. Sunglasses tend to suggest a mystique as if one is surrounded by light.

DSq ua

Are you wearing sunglasses? Is it truly a fashion statement? What about the old saying “the eyes are the window to the soul”? If we’re wearing sunglasses are we pulling the shades down on the window to the soul?

Makeup nowadays is designed as per skin tone. For dark skin toned ladies, lips should not be pale and nude. Stick to plums and bright colors to bring out your natural skin color nice and bright. A lipstick that would look absolutely fab is for summer. As for eyes, golden and bronze eye shadows work well. Also, play around with colorful liners like aqua liquid eye-liners or maybe purple. The beautiful colors will give you a fresh look. Lastly, choosing the right blush color is crucial. Try colors like peach, bronze, deep orange, and rose. Choose whichever suits your skin tone and stick to it.

Ancient African Beauty Rituals by Yasmin Tavakoli

1. Argan Oil A popular oil derived from the fruit of the Argan tree in Morocco, this beauty product is used to reduce acne scars, prevent future acne, and prevent stretch marks. The oil is very moisturizing and is great for dry skin. The oil has become very popular across the western hemisphere as a hair treatment. The ‘Moroccan oil’ is used in the hair to provide shine, strength, and aid in regrowth.

2. Baobab Oil Used in Eastern and Southern Africa, this oil is known to cure aches and rheumatism. In certain parts of Africa, the oil is placed in a baby’s bath to promote smooth skin and treat eczema and psoriasis. The oil is very hydrating and is great as an anti aging treatment to promote regeneration of the skin. Because it doesn’t clog pores, many people with acne can use this as a moisturizing treatment without worrying about breakouts.

3. Fenugreek Seeds

Use a teaspoon of dried fenugreek seeds and a quarter cup of sweet almond oil to create a youth serum used in ancient Egypt. Crush the seeds and add the oil, allowing it to soak for at least half an hour. Use the oil on your skin daily as a youth preserver. If you decide to use it as a mask, try placing two chamomile tea bags on the eyes to de puff. Ancient Egyptians used to use the petals of the plant to take down puffiness.

4. Buchu 5. Black Soap* Many Moroccan women swear by this product and claim that if used biweekly, the skin will continue to glow and will prevent from premature aging. Moroccan hammams use black soap to exfoliate and replenish the skin, scrubbing away dead cells and revealing a smooth glowing overall complexion. The soap derives from the peels of plantains, which are known to be used as an anti-inflammatory. In addition, the soap is used to clear acne, get rid of eczema, and clear up psoriasis flare-ups.

J/A 91 STYLES 108

The leaves of this South African plant are commonly used to heal bruises. Some people crush the leaves and apply it to treat rheumatic pain. If eaten, the plant will help strengthen the body and relieve it of any illness and will actually boost the immune system. Buchu is also great for the skin because it is high in calcium and iron and prevents oxidative skin damage.

6. Milk and Honey A common beauty regimen for Cleopatra, the combination of milk and honey was used for bathing to soften the skin. Milk also is known to rid the body of brown spots, while honey moisturizes while serving as an anti-bacterial, antifungal, and anti-viral for the skin. And because honey and milk are known to be cooling and great after sun exposure, the treatment worked wonders after being in the scorching Egyptian sun.

7. Marula Oil 8. Moringa Oil 9. Rooibos In Mozambique, this oil is used as a moisturizing body lotion and as a massage oil for babies. Up until recently, many tribes in Africa used Marula oil instead of water to bathe themselves. Many tribes in Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa have used the oil as a key part of their diet to ensure good health and great skin. The oil is also used to preserve meat for up to a year and is considered a delicacy to be added to an array of traditional and modern recipes.

This oil comes from the Moringa tree, which translates to ‘miracle tree.’ In many African cultures, this oil was used to heal the skin of harsh irritants, and replenish the skin of its natural oils. In ancient Egypt, many placed vases of the oil in their tombs. Today, you can find the oil in many scrubs, lotions, and bathing products.

Though it has become popular in tea form, this plant actually has been used in South Africa for centuries to treat allergies. The plant itself is high in antioxidants, and as a tea, Rooibos acts as an anti-allergen. It protects the skin from harsh toxins and radicals found in the atmosphere and treats inflammation, rashes, and dermatitis. So the next time you reach for the Benadryl, try drinking some rooibos tea instead.

10. Shea Butter* The most popular of African rituals to spread across the continents, this beauty secret is commonly found in cleansers, body washes, and creams. It is heavily hydrating and is perfect for dry and flaky skin. Some women even use it in their hair after heavy exposure to the sun or after coloring their hair. Some pregnant women claim that it aids in preventing stretch marks! And because of the fatty acids found in shea butter, it is a great remedy for tired skin and those suffering from eczema. * Pure shea butter and black soud is available at Tifani Hairstyles@tifanihairstyles

Your Skinn Only Better

Skin Care for all Skin Types

As the temperature rises, under all that make-up your skin is crying for some moisture and hydration. Various skin types needs different skin care regimes to keep your skin looking fresh and glowing. You might be taking good care of your skin by using cleaning products but you aren’t getting the full benefits because it doesn’t suit your skin type. We’re here to help of course. First, check below which category your skin falls under then follow the skincare regime to go with it, you’ll be seeing results after just a week.

Skin types:

Dry S

kin

BOOTS NO7 Beauiful Skin Radience Exfoliator for Normal to Dry Skin BOBBI BROWN Hydrating Rich Cream cleanser

Dry Skin: Your skin can be flaky and easily irritated. It’s also more sensitive. If your skin has these qualities and also tends to react to some of the skin products you have tried, you have dry skin. Oily Skin: The primary test for determining if you have oily skin is is to do a blot test. By using a tissue to blot your skin, if you notice your face gets slick by midday, you have oily skin, if its way later in the day then you’re in the clear. Oily skin is usually prone to acne.

CHANEL Gel Purete Rinse Off Foaming Gel Cleanser

Combination Skin: If the description of dry skin matches your cheeks, but the description of oily skin matches your “T-zone” (nose and brow area), you have combination skin.

Combinat ion Skin

How to care for your skin type? Dry Skin: For dry skin you should use a gentle cleanser and only in the evening. Before moisturizing apply a product that contains hyaluronic acid to maximize hydration. After that you can apply moisturizers. Look for a moisturizer that contains phospholipids or any fatty acids.

CLARINS Gentle Foaming Cleanser with Cotonseed for Normal or Combination Skin

Oily Skin: For your skin type cleansing should be done in the morning and evening using a gentle cleanser. Applying a salicylic acid product ion your oily areas will minimize the acne. Use an oil-free moisturizer with SPF to avoid breakouts and wrinkles. Combination Skin: As for combination skin types stick to gentle cleanser (not the medicated ones we want to keep it mild). Add salicylic acid products to the oilier areas only every other day. Moisturize with oil-free products and add a heavy moisturizer to only the dry parts of your skin.

During his journey through Brazil, Olivier Baussan filled page after page of souvenir notes: name of a painter, lists of ingredients, a sketch of a flower, a phrase… the L’Occitane au Bresil project began to take shape. Three words and the decision was made: Feito no Brasil- made in Brazil. In these sun, fragrance and body care lines, each beauty product is associated with three Brazilian elements: biome (bio geographical region), ingredient and artist. In Brazil, spoilt for choice, such is the incredible diversity of the Brazilian ecosystems, L’Occitane has adopted two new ingredients: Jenipapo, a fruit tree from the Cerrado and Vitoria Regia, a giant water lily from Amazonia. Day Flower: A Fresh, Green Floral Scent The Vitoria Regia flower sleeps during the day, its petals folded over as if to protect itself from the rays of the sun. Night Flower: A Powdery, Green Floral Scent During the night, the lily transforms. It blooms in the soft light of the moon and releases a sophisticated floral scent, dominated by green and powdery notes. The next day, it fades away, giving its place to a new one.

Jenipapo

The Jenipapo range was born from the jenipapo fruit tree, which grows as tall and as quickly as possible, in order to rise above the canopy and soak up the energy of the sun. Jenipapo is a line of suncare and fragrance products for the face and body, inspired by the protective and moisturizing properties of the jenipapo fruit. Ultralight, sensual suncare formulas to help prevent sunburn. Apply generously – and often! The jenipapo releases a scent with green, floral, fruity notes. Citrus, water melon and pina colada are followed languidly by a few sprays of lily of the valley in the shade of frangipani trees. The final lingering scents blend musk, sandalwood and vanilla in a captivating, sensual, feminine fragrance. J/A 91 STYLES 116

Face the Transition into Fall Every summer we await these make-up endorsements and campaigns expecting flashy make-up and flashy colors. Some of us might get excited about going a bit brighter for summer but others prefer to tone down the shades but still look good. Put away these neon pink lipsticks and bright peach blush, it’s time to take a peek at this season’s make-up color trends.

1

Golden Olive: Time to brighten up those eyes with this new shade of green! Throw away your emerald green eyeliner. Adding shimmer into your eye is just the thing you need to give yourself an instant makeover. It’ll go with any shade of color you mix it with because it has a natural undertone to it.

3

Navy Blue: We were expecting more turquoise and bright blue this summer but they surprised us with navy blue! Now this is a beautiful shade of blue to play around with. From strong eye-shadows to strong nail colors. However forget blushers and lips for this color.

Deep Plum: Let’s take a break from lilacs and bright purple and say hello to plum! However we aren’t only sticking to nails. Why not try an eye-liner in this color to brighten up your eye? Or a dramatic deep plum lip. A glittery eyeshadow in this color would be great for a night out.

4

Rusty Orange: A mix of red and orange with a hint of gold is what this color is about. This color is seriously skyrocketing to the top of our “favorites” list. It will instantly maximize your tan and give you a glow you haven’t dreamt of before this shade of color! Try a bit of eye-shadow or maybe a lipstick in this color but don’t overdo it, a little bit of this color on your eyelids will do the trick. Add some volumizing mascara to draw attention to the eyes.

5

Chocolaty beige: Somewhere between cocoa and beige there’s a color that we simply cannot get enough of. It’s a type of nude that just instantly enhances your look and complexion. It has a creamy undertone with a hint of color. Try an eye-pencil in this color for something soft for the morning, or a lipstick that can be worn on a daily basis.

Micaroon

T

he women behind the new yummiest make-up line to hit the market is Rima Khoreibi. She’s an Arab-Canadian, born in Beirut and raised in Saudi Arabia. After ten years of growing up in the region she moved to Toronto, Canada. Upon completing her degree in Cultural Anthropology, Rima married and moved to Amman, Jordan with her husband. After four years of living in Amman, in 2001, along with her husband, and their two sons she moved to Dubai. Rima always had a love for cosmetics. Therefore, when the idea of Micaroon occurred to her around four years ago, she was excited to toy around with the concept as she saw it as the perfect opportunity to create a business through something she’s passionate about. After endless research and travels around the world to attend exhibitions and visit manufacturers she was able to launch Micaroon. S: What inspired you to start your on beauty line? RK: There were several factors that inspired me to start my own beauty line. I love cosmetics so that was a good place to start. I felt that I could offer a new cosmetics brand in the market that’s young, fresh and different from the other brands that were already available. Micaroon Make Up is the first of its kind to be manufactured in the UAE, and I am very proud of that. The UAE has very stringent laws regarding their factories, thus we operate under strict international laws using FDA approved ingredients. Micaroon uses only excellent quality products, packaged beautifully with competitive prices. The packaging of our brand is inspired by the gorgeous macaroon cookies, famous for their colorful and delicious taste. That said, Micaroon Make Up is inspired by feminine beauty and our displays of the brand will put a smile on anyone’s face. S: In your own words describe the philosophy of Micaroon. RK: The philosophy for Micaroon Make Up is ‘glam on the go!’All our make-up products are cream based, so applying it is super easy. Our pocket size packaging makes it easy to take anywhere, day or night, fitting perfectly into your smallest clutch. Our brushes are also retractable so they’ll fit in any small pouch. Also, they won’t ruin the lining of your make-up bag as they each one comes with a cover. Perfect for the busy woman on the go, who cares about looking good, but only has a couple of minutes to spare. S: What are some of the challenges that you faced while launching the brand and how did you overcome them? RK: Challenges are a given for any business, especially a start-up like Micaroon Make Up. Sometimes deadlines are not met from your resources, therefore causing delays. Certain procedures suddenly pop up out of nowhere that have to be dealt with to ensure everything is in order and are ready to sell, and that can often be time consuming. You learn to be patient. Great tip I’ve picked up along the way is to constantly follow up, follow up and follow up! Also, it’s very important to hire a team that will fulfill the vital positions that will navigate the brand in the right direction. J/A 91 STYLES 122

S: What are your best-selling items? RK: I’m very happy to see that all of our products are popular. Of course there are some colors more popular than others. Age groups play a big role in what’s our best sellers. Most of our products are a big hit with women in their 20’s, while teenage girls are more into our lip glosses and mascaras. S: What sets Micaroon apart from other beauty brands in the market? RK: Micaroon Make Up is not just your average cosmetic brand on a shelf or counter, it is an entire concept. It is based on a macaroon bakerylike concept. Shopping for our brand is a unique, happy experience. Normally, shopping for cosmetics usually means testing the colors, or browsing the color palette, with Micaroon Make Up, it doesn’t just stop at the palette. The entire brand is eye candy! The display of our packing, the set up of all of our products, the entire feel is up lifting. People of all ages stop by our stands and take their time experiencing the concept.

S: Are there specific needs or concerns that Arab women have when it comes to beauty and make-up that other women don’t? RK: Arab women are known for their beauty and for their glamorous and stylish ways. They are massive consumers of cosmetics and therefore make up is a big part of their daily lives. It is very important for us to offer the Arab woman high-quality products that gives a soft glam look for day or a sexier night look. They love shimmery and pearly effects, and that’s what we offer them. S: Can you share with our readers beauty tips for a fresh summer look? RK: We have a wonderful range of gorgeous colors that are fresh and perfect for all seasons, especially for warm climate of this region. We just launched our new summer colors and they are the perfect combination to use to create that perfect summer look. Our lipstick, HMU, a stunning hot orange is our it summer shade a stunning hot orange, making it your number one companion for those fun summer nights. Our lip gloss, Coo, is a fresh, soft shimmery coral, perfect for looking pretty by the pool or beach. Our eye shadow, Cleo, is a stunning deep bronze shade that is made for the queen in you, and is already a huge hit. And, our gold blush/ face high-lighter will ensure a gorgeous, summer glow. On top of all that we offer a little clear pouch that you can easily pop into your beach tote. S: And last but not least, what is your favorite macaroon flavor? RK: My favorite macaroon flavor is orange blossom, hands down! It’s so yummy and the taste reminds me of delicious desserts from this region.

Watermelon Not only are watermelons juicy and refreshing during the summer heat, but also rich in antioxidants and great for your skin. They protect your skin from aging and sun damage and are natural exfoliators. To help keep your skin looking young and fresh, here are a few tips on how to make the most out of watermelons! By Yalda Golsharifi

1 3

With all the dust and pollution outside, a good way to cleanse those pores is to mix watermelon with crushed mint leaves and freeze. Rub the ice cubes on your face. This will close open pores and give such a soothing effect.

Protection from sun burns- A great way to heal your skin from sun burns and sun tans is to mix some watermelon and cucumber pulp (equal amounts) and apply on your face for 20 minutes.

To prevent wrinkles, mash up an avocado and mix it with some watermelon juice to make a face mask. Leave it on your face for about 20 minutes then wash. This is a super strong anti aging mask full of antioxidants which help fight signs of your skin ageing.

If you have dry skin, combine 1 tablespoon of honey with 1 tablespoon of watermelon juice. Mix well and apply to your face and neck and wash off after 20 minutes. The honey nourishes your skin while the watermelon hydrates it. Philosophy Melon Daquiri Shower Gel

Power of the Plus By Yalda Golsharifi

1. Ask yourself empowering questions! We all face difficult times and moments where we feel stuck or powerless. Asking yourself the right question at this time can really change your perspective! Whenever you experience a small failure quickly ask “what can I learn from this?” or “how can this be to my advantage?” Your focus will immediately shift to solution based thinking and that’s the road to success! Great business leaders are shaped by their hardships not their successes but it’s what we learn and do with our hardship that makes all the difference. Try it for yourself and realize how beneficial this shift in focus actually is. 2. 50 percent of feeling good is looking good! No matter what it is you have planned, take the time to get ready and feel good about yourself, even if it’s a short trip to the supermarket, when you feel good you act differently and all your interactions will be with higher confidence. Another great secret to success, you know what they say, don’t dress for the job you have, dress for the job you want! If you were a high flyer wouldn’t you need to be glamorous at every moment? 3. You are what you eat. Over the years we tend to forget that eating is a way of fueling our body, but with our busy lifestyles and unstable diets, we are doing the opposite, our bodies our working harder to digest the unnatural ingredients and fatty foods. Considering that digestion takes up a lot of your energy, you will find yourself much more alive and energetic when you watch what you eat! You are as alive as the food you eat, salads are your friend, they are filled with life and will give you that extra boost of energy you need in your busy life. 4. Find your music. Research shows that people who listen to music are much happier people. But don’t wait for the radio to put your favorite song once every four hours. Explore your library and make that perfect play list. Choose songs that make you feel energetic and engage you. Driving to work with the right song can change your whole day. Another play list to unwind is also a great idea. 5. Random Acts of Kindness! Although we all have a heart and most of us will go out of our way to do something for others, why not schedule it in your daily routines? If we place a goal to do 3 acts of kindness daily we will find many more opportunities to do so. Seek and you shall find, how much more rewarding will your life be when you sleep knowing you have touched three people that day, and every day. Be creative and you will soon be addicted to the feeling of giving, money can be a last resort. A genuine compliment can sometimes change a life more than anything else!

Elite Body Sculpture: “No Needles, No Scalpels, No Stitches” What if you could get liposuction with virtually no downtime, no ugly scaring, and all while being awake? Well, you can do exactly that at Elite Body Sculpture. Dr. Aaron Rollins is the pioneer in inventing and patenting a new method of liposuction, which requires minimal invasiveness! So all the moms out there that want to get their bodies back, this might be the procedure for you, Yasmin Tavakoli writes. Styles: Doctor Rollins, when did you invent this new technology and how does it work? Dr. Rollins: I invented the Airsculpt Laser Liposculpture and patented it in February 2012. Since then our offices have performed thousands of surgeries with this proprietary equipment. It basically works in 3 steps: first the fat is numbed by a 2mm hole placed on the entry site, then the laser melts the fat and tightens the skin, and finally the airsculpt power buffs the fat out. Styles: What’s the biggest benefit of using this technology as opposed to traditional lipo? Dr. Rollins: You don’t have to be put to sleep. With traditional liposuction, patients are put to sleep which can sometimes cause complications. This procedure is safer and less painful with less bruising. Most importantly, the results are faster and look smoother and more natural- more artistic. Styles: How long is the procedure? Dr. Rollins: The average procedure takes an hour and the great part is that you can have a friend or a relative in there with you. Not only do you not have to be fully undressed, but we like to give our patients a fun spa like experience. So you can listen to whatever music you like during the procedure, anything from gangster rap to Arabic.

Into the Wild Time for summer picnics! Never neglect dressing up your gardens or outdoor area. By dressing up we don’t mean throwing around haute couture gowns on your grass, we mean furniture-wise. A few sofas and a table is all you need to get that gorgeous picnic set-up. Accessorize with vases and candles to achieve the “romantic picnic” mood. Now what should the hostess wear? A loose print dress with comfortable (but stylish) flats is all you need for this occasion.

Your living room will look fresh especially if you add wooden tables. Another idea is curtains! Nur Kaoukji and Noor Al-Sabah

W

e caught up with Noor Al-Sabah and Nur Kaoukji, the founders of ecru, where they talked about the upcoming of their brand and their latest collection, ‘Take Me to the

Tropics’. They also spoke about the technique used to make this brand very unique and this is what the girls had to say: Styles: Tell us a little about yourselves and how you became friends? Noor Al-Sabah and Nur Kaoukji: We were born friends. We grew up together and although are particularly different, we are also very much the same. Most importantly we make each other laugh, a lot! And we have the same appreciation for things that are beautifully made. We both co-founded ecru a year ago. Noor also works as Fashion Director at Al Othman and Nur lives in Jaipur most of the year taking care of production and development for ecru. Styles: What was your a-ha moment to start ecru? Noor and Nur: We always knew that we would one day create something together. Both of us studied different subjects and were going in completely different directions professionally. However, we both loved to dream about our own homes, about the beautiful objects we would collect, lively picnics we would hold or magical parties we would host. As Nur was already living and working with artisans in Jaipur, these dreams slowly started to become reality and ecru was born. Styles: Why linens? Noor and Nur: We absolutely love developing our own prints and what better way than through linens! They immediately add a mood to a table setting, by having the ability to alter the ambiance of an entire

J/A 91 STYLES 134

room. They can also be used for picnics or on the beach, which is very practical. Both our mothers have linens from their childhood that they’ve preciously kept and which hold strong, priceless memories. They’re also pieces that never go out of fashion or age dramatically. Styles: What inspired you to create the ‘Take Me to the Tropics’ collection and what new prints will we come to discover? Noor and Nur: We were dreaming of going somewhere balmy and romantic this summer. We both have a passion for old movies, one of our favorites being ‘Fly Me Down To Rio’ with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, a musical with a carefree elegant vibe. This movie was our main inspiration until Noor actually took a trip to Brazil. Between her photographs and the dancing stars of the 30s we were all set. Our prints embody this feeling that they’re happy and timeless. Styles: Talk to us about your print process and materials used. Noor and Nur: We are proud to work with incredible wood block printers in Jaipur. Wood block carving is an ancient form of printing, where a design is carved in reverse from a slab of wood that is then dipped into pigment before being stamped onto fabric. It requires extremely delicate skills. What is interesting is seeing the variation in technique according to artisan, each one of the printers has their own style of printing, some stamp harder than others making the print bolder in some instances, others are more light on their fingers so you really can’t tell where the print begins or ends. So the fabrics are very much alive. We work with organic cottons and linens that we source from India and choosing these fabrics is as much fun to us as designing the prints. Styles: How has ecru matured since you first launched the brand? Noor and Nur: We’ve definitely become bolder in both our design and our business decisions. Styles: What does your brand offer other than linens? Noor and Nur: We cover various materials from fabric, brass, and glass to wood, which we use to create items for table service, children’s wear, clothing, lighting, carpeting and much more. Our product line covers most home and bathroom essentials including beautiful accessories that we produce in collaboration with embroidery house Sophia 203. Styles: If you had the choice to live in a specific era which one would it be? Noor and Nur: Right now we would both love to be dancing under .the moonlight in Brazil during the 1930s To learn more about ecru visit their website at www.ecruonline.com J/A 90 STYLES 135

South Africa

O

ne of the most popular destinations in the African continent is undoubtedly Cape Town. This city is not only one of the most beautiful in the world, it is also full of relaxation, adventure, and pretty much anything you could want from a trip in South Africa. The most popular attraction in Cape Town is probably Table Mountain. This huge slab of sandstone is more than a 1000 meters high and is right in the middle of town. What’s interesting about it is that the tip is commonly hidden among a layer of clouds, which makes the picturesque setting look like something out of a movie. To get to the top you have an option of hiking along the trail or taking a cable car. Once at the top you will see tons of wildlife and greenery and will be able to enjoy a nice lunch while gazing at the coastline. For those who seek more adventure, you can paraglide back down from the mountain if you choose. While in Cape Town you can take a trip to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years, take a stroll through the town, or plan a mini safari excursion. Cape Town is also famous for diving with sharks, but be careful great whites are known to be aggressive and even the cages can’t keep them out for long. For some local craftsmanship head to the Greenmarket Square where you can find beaded jewelry, African masks, and bone carved household goods.

f you enjoy tradition and ancient culture, then you will love Djenne. This city was founded in 800 AD and is one of the oldest cities in Sub-Saharan Africa. The city itself is located on an island in the Niger River delta and used to be a main hub for traders between the forests of Guinea and Mali. Djenne is also a center of Islamic teachings. The market square has a beautiful Grand Mosque, which serves as the epicenter of the city. The Mosque is actually the largest brick mud building in the world, which makes it look somewhat like a beautiful sand castle. Most of the town is comprised of mud-brick buildings, which are painted. So you can literally spend hours exploring the town, finding ancient traditions still being used for architecture. If you happen to be there on a Monday then definitely check out the Grand Marche, where you can find thousands of traders from all over the region selling their unique goods. The great thing about the city is that it is located just a few hundred kilometers from Timbuktu, so if you have time you can explore another enchanting city during your stay. The best time to go to Djenne is during August or September when the city turns into an island. The rest of the year is quite rainy and won’t allow you to experience the full splendor of the ancient city. The accommodations in the city are quite basic, so keep that in mind when you are choosing a hotel.

y far the most popular destination in Africa for safaris, Kenya offers the most amazing wildlife and is the typical setting of what you would expect an African safari to look like. The Masai Mara National Reserve is the most famous wildlife park in Kenya and was established in 1961 to protect Kenya’s wildlife from hunters. Located just over 200km from the capital of Nairobi, the park attracts millions of tourists per year. The most interesting thing is that the number of cars is limited per day, so you might have to book in advance to ensure availability. The park is located on the border of Tanzania, situated on the Rift Valley, which runs through the Serengeti Plains. Because the Mara River runs through the park, there are hordes of hippos and crocodiles all along the water. Also, there are over a million wildebeest and thousands of zebras all throughout the reserve. The area feeds itself from 8 months of rainfall, which allow the hilly grasslands to house hundreds of bird species in addition to the larger mammals. On the safari, you’re sure to see lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, impalas, baboons, war hogs, buffalos, and elephants. If you go between the months of July and October you might end up seeing a lion praying on a zebra, as in those months there is the highest concentration of zebras. After the safari, you can visit a traditional Maasai village. Also, you can experience hot air ballooning over the reserve, something not to be missed!

Zanzibar

Z

anzibar- the name itself hints at its origins. The history of this beautiful place centers on the Arab slave trade as well as the hugely successful spice trade. A blend of African, Indian, Arab, and Moorish cultures are present in this Unesco World Heritage site. In fact, the Stone Town, which is one of the most popular attractions, is actually an old Arab town, built by those in the spice and slave trade. While in the town see the House of Wonders and the Arab Fort. The market place is one of the most vibrant open-air markets where you can find unique items like ‘elephant garlic.’ There also happens to be the old slave market where you will see the holding cells and witness what it was like to buy slaves hundreds of years ago. If you love snorkeling and feel like entering a secluded paradise, go to the Mnemba Island in the Indian Ocean. This island is completely private and is part of the Zanzibar Archipelago best known for incredible snorkeling. For those who enjoy a beautiful trail, take a walk through the Jozani Forest where you will find the nearly extinct Red Colobus Monkey. Zanzibar is also known for elephant tours and well as a unique butterfly species, which can be found in certain parks. Interestingly enough, in addition to saffron, cardamom, and other spices, the city contains a large seaweed market, which boasts some of the best seaweed in the world. The most incredible place to stay is the underwater room in the Manta Resort, which was designed by the Swedish company Genberg Underwater Hotels. You are literally somewhat submerged and can see sea life four meters beneath the water.

OTZ Shoes is inspired by Oetzi the iceman, who lived about 5,300 years ago. His frozen body was found in September 1991 in the Ötztal Alps between Austria and Italy. He was fully clothed and wearing one of the oldest pair of shoes ever discovered. They are currently displayed in the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy. The shoes were quite remarkable considering the time period -made of deer skin stitched to a bear skin sole with an internal woven net filled with dried grass and moss for warmth and comfort. Caroll

Caroll, known for its high quality products is capable of reinventing itself continuously, and has always found a place in the heart of women’s dressing rooms. They’re experts when it comes to combining chic and sensual style with a modern twist. Caroll’s aim is to make women even more beautiful while looking conservative: The brand has a great reputation and a true capital for understanding women’s style throughout the years.

The Saga of the French brand 1960: Pullovers

Caroll knitted itself into the lives of women after the creators of the brand, Raphaël Lévy and Joseph Bigio had an image of a beautiful woman being free, sensual and lively. A woman that has confidence in the clothes that she wears. The first boutique opened in 1963 in Paris with a collection that was entirely composed of knitted articles. From ultra-feminine light pullovers to warm and enveloping cardigans.

1980: The uprising of the brand

A dynamic and modern ready-to-wear line has been launched by the brand. In a time where women wanted to assert themselves in a professional environment, which was still very masculine, the brand was the answer to the working women. The Caroll woman embraces every collection whether it’s square shoulders, belted jackets, which cultivates elegance, audacity, and are the proof of a relaxed mood that does not lack in spirit.

1990: In the Heart of Women’s Lives

Times have changed and women found a balance between family and work life. Caroll evolved towards a collection that mixed the two categories, in order to accompany women in their journey. Their communication evolved towards a less impertinent tone, which promoted positivism, carelessness and friendliness.

2000: An Impertinent Fashion Sense

2013: Sienna Miller becomes the first muse of the brand Caroll decided to take a new step to be more aspirational chic and sensual by choosing Sienna Miller to become the very first muse of the brand in Europe for the Spring/Summer 2013 collection. An advertising campaign hugely relied on the French press who loved the idea that an easy chic brand with French codes joined together with one of the most fashionable it girls.

“Elegance with a twist”, is how Caroll has defined its style. The brand cultivated an allure, a certain shift with a touch of impertinence; the true chic is to never take oneself too seriously. The brand launched an accessory line that completed the looks with a touch of sensuality, sexiness or simply casualness, according to ones personality and the wishes of every woman. Season after season, certain accessories have become indispensible must-haves.

2010: New stylistic direction; a new campaign

Caroll enjoyed reinventing important classics with elegance and modernity for an allure that translated an “effortless chic”. The brand created a wardrobe that is ‘intelligent and chameleon-like’, in which every article can be mixed and matched, and overlap according to ones mood and the occasion. The clothes reveal every essence of a woman every moment, and accompanies women in their every day lives. Caroll launches their new advertising campaign, produced by Zoé Cassavetes, focused around this daily complicity that is embodied by women.

The exclusive French chocolatier will be showcasing its savoir-faire and craftsmanship through its legendary chocolates, each created by hand with inimitable know-how and limitless innovation. Our values of excellence and creativity, together with our passion for all things chocolate drive our vision, and we are proud to be expanding our horizons in the region together with our partner,” said Geoffroy D’Anglejan, Managing Director of La Maison du Chocolat. La Maison du Chocolat is a brand close to my heart as it has been a personal favourite for many years, and I look forward to continuing in our feat to promote gourmet craftsmanship across the region.” La Maison du Chocolat has taken the science of balance and associations to an art form, creating perfect harmony on the palate and a unique experience of excellence. This is the perfect month to delve into some research, with some online window-shopping giving you plenty of ideas to mull over. VALENTINO [luisaviaroma.com]

While this is a month that you’re not only feeling a lot more confident but also more creative, which is going to impact your fashion choices and how you dress, this is less about discovering a new sense of confidence and a new sense of creativity and more about recapturing something lost. The door opens to second chances on both fronts this month, with a chance to tap back into a sense of nostalgia and some of your old spunk.

November 22 - December 20

If the first thing you want to do is put out the ‘do not disturb’ sign and the last thing you want is to make fashion more complicated than it needs to be, then finding a happy medium needs to be your aim this month. This is the month where you’re likely to find that all your romantic and creative passions come to the surface, fighting to be heard, making anything that isn’t vibrant appear dull and lifeless.
