New Year’s Resolution Checklist How likely are you to stick to your resolutions this year? The more boxes you check, the better your chance at success!

This is something I really want.

Visualize, visualize, vizualie...

Your resolution is purely for your own benefit, not because you “should,” or because other people want you to, or because it’s trending on Instagram. If your resolution is to buy a new pair of heels every month, so be it! As long as it’s what you want.

You write down and visualize your resolution regularly. It’s so much harder to spend the money you’re saving for that trip to New York when your phone’s wallpaper is a picture of the Statue of Liberty and your laptop screensaver says “N.Y.C. HERE I COME!”

This is not too much for me to handle.

I’ve already mentioned my resolutions to my best friend… and sister… and coworkers… and neighbor… and the lady who does my nails…

Your list of resolutions isn’t a page long. It’s been narrowed down to two or three important goals so that you can actually focus on achieving them. Despite what others say about you, you’re not actually Superwoman.

Instead of “Exercise more,” you say “Work out on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 7:00 a.m.” Specificity is key- after all, exercising “more” could just mean going to the gym 3 times this year, instead of only twice like last year, which is probably not what you intended.

I have phrased my resolution in a positive way. You leave words like “Stop” and “Don’t” out of your resolution phrase. Studies have shown that negative phrases make it harder for the mind to process and stick to a resolution. Think about it, if you’re constantly walking around thinking, “Don’t eat fast food. Don’t eat fast food. Don’t eat fast food,” you’re far more likely to give in and order those fries, whereas if you’re thinking, “Eat more healthy snacks. Eat more healthy snacks. Eat more healthy snacks,” you’ll probably realize how yummy raw almonds or fresh strawberries can be.

I have a good plan to help me succeed. You know what steps you’ll have to take to reach your goal. You have Step A, B, and C all planned out, and you’ve even set a deadline for completing each step. Conquering a challenge is done more easily and efficiently when you divide your plan into several stepping stones.

I am prepared to change some habits. You know that saving up for that gorgeous pair of Christian Louboutin’s will probably mean cutting out your daily Starbucks run, and you’re willing to take on that challenge. You take expanding your shoe collection very seriously, so it warrants a serious change.

Illustrations by

You know what you want and it’s no secret. You share your goals and progress with people who are willing to listen and encourage you. Plus, what are you going to tell your manicurist when December comes around and you haven’t dropped a single one of the five kilos you’ve been talking about getting rid of all year?

I have done my research. You are aware that old habits die hard and new habits die easy, but this is not going to stop you. It takes approximately 21 days for an activity to become a habit. From then on it takes about six months for it to become an essential part of your lifestyle and personality, at which point you’ll be sticking to your resolution without even having to think about it. You just have to be patient and persistent.

I will not beat myself up if I slip. I can brush it off and keep going instead of losing hope and giving up completely. You have mentally prepared yourself for the inevitable: messing up at some point. There will be days when your resolutions seem to just fly out the window, and that’s okay. You are going to take this one day at a time and keep a positive outlook, especially after the occasional slip. Success is never a straight climb to the top, and the bumps along the way are just reminders that you’re only human.

Bleached Babe

You stained your hands making your own designs as a kid. But you might not have thought you’d be rocking this style again as an honest-to-goodness grown-up. And if people told you it’s now attached to pricey designer labels, you might just think they’ve been drinking from a batch of Electric Kool-Aid. But dig it: bleach-dye is back. It’s about taking colored fabric and bleaching it to remove color, as opposed to the old tie-dye that was about taking white or light colored fabrics and adding dye. ... It’s really more moody than groovy, and we think that’s what makes it more sophisticated!

Let’s be honest: Most of us don’t spend very much time lounging around on the deck of a yacht. But, just because you’re landlocked, it doesn’t mean you can’t dress the part of a boating beauty. Anchor your look with statement accessories and maybe a bold lip color to avoid looking like a children’s TV presenter, and remember, Halloween has already passed, so beware of turning your outfit into a costume! Pre-Spring 2015 Collection

The Pre-Spring 2015 collection at Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet is filled with self-assured, feminine sportswear that is a lively take on the wardrobe and discoveries of a young Jacqueline and Lee Bouvier, who documented their travels in the classic 1951 picture book “One Special Summer.” Searing hues of azure, vermilion and poppy provide the foundation for neat color-blocked ensembles. Black and white is another motif, in brazen awning stripes or high-contrast floral prints. Texture is rampant and makes classics feel new by way of a high-shine croc-stamped leather, to nude lace shot with red to create depth and richness, to knits that mimic jacquards. Print is bold and alive in raucous botanical-style prints and exploded polka dots. Prints may be mixed for a spirited, personal and high-impact effect, either in suit looks or separates. Novelty pieces appear in a naïve trompe l’oeil shift dress and a sequin-encrusted sheath with figural designs that suggest an assortment of collected souvenir badges. An enhanced photo print depicting the famous cliffside houses of Italy’s Cinque Terre invokes Bendet’s love of travel. The silhouette is typically flirty, but with a play on proportion that is still modern: full skirts, A-line dresses, shrunken bombers – this season’s statement jacket -- and perfectly matched top/skirt sets. The ample fan base of Alice + Olivia’s pants will rejoice in two new shapes: supremely fashionable culottes, available in khaki and black, and a lean trouser jean that is as flattering as it is versatile. Fans of Alice and Olivia’s other highly collectible category – the novelty intarsia knit sweater – will find plenty to love.

Fantasy & Feathers Resort 2015 Collection

Inspired by its metropolitan muse New York, DKNY celebrates city fashion with a flair for classic sentiments, rendered through modern silhouettes, always on the move. Most recently, the urban-cool and eclectic New York brand, departed from its previous effortless chic FW14 collection, to an edgier, yet plentifully playful DKNY Resort 2015 collection. Through the collection, you feel the pulse of the New York streets, on your way to a downtown Black and White Ball. City-chic tuxes and backless or sheer and ruffled jumpsuits, dress this urban fairy tale with both whimsy and electricity. A Mary Jane heel, metallic oxford or powder blue platform sneaker, kicks the glass slipper to the curb, and your blush pink lace gown receives the crowning touch of a faux-fur lined bomber or loose-knit sweater. Unconventional but undeniably fashionable, match or mash-up separates of pearl-trimmed shirts and jackets, flirty skirts and daisy-embroidered dresses with flashes of silver lame to reflect the light and bella, flame or blush to romance the skin. Ample textures and pallets are also here for your enjoyment and layering—lace and floral cutwork couple so well with fringe or feathers, and ruffles offer a soft contrast to taut white collars and cuffs. Faux-fur luxes up gray flannel or nylon bombers and sweats dress up under the sparkle of jewels. In this fun, flirty and feminine collection, it’s your world, your party – your moment to shine.

Tory Burch Resort 2015 Collection "Resort 2015 was inspired by the sun-bleached palette of Milton Avery. The mood is relaxed; the silhouettes casual, clean and structured. Pre-Spring 2015 Collection

For Pre Spring Summer 2015, the Victoria, Victoria Beckham collection looks to South America for ideas of color and craft. The color palette is strong and vibrant; lush reds, oranges, fuchsias and tropical flora prints sit alongside evocative skyline shades of fog grey, cloud white and pale blue.Whilst silhouettes are kept simple and refined, texture and surface are explored through intricate embellishments. Frayed-organza embroidery, developed to resemble multiple layers of soft petals, is presented on the textured patch tunic and the vest skirt combo mini dress, whilst the tactile jacquard drop sleeve tunic features a playful detachable 3D flower brooch. The modern floral theme is further explored this season using prints that have been hand painted in house. Vivid orchids and tulips feature on fluid silk tunics and button up skirt/shirt combo dresses. Playing with proportion, the flowers are blown-up to a point where they appear beautifully distorted and abstract. As ever, the fabrics used in the Victoria, Victoria Beckham collection are key. Sumptuous suede is contrasted with double-faced cottons on shirt dresses, while glitter and shine are incorporated in lame dresses in shimmering shades of red, orange and gem-like blue. The signature wool is re-imagined as a micro-boucle material, and technical fabrics are given a new soft feel by removing fibers through advanced printing processes and washes. The subtle influence of sportswear is also felt via multi-stripe rib collars and waistbands, bungee-cord belts on T-shirt dresses, enamel coated snap fasteners, and a tracksuit that has been reimagined as a super-soft cashmere funnel neck pullover paired with easy slim pants.

Those were the days when women looked their elegant best in relaxed tailored pieces with a feminine appeal. Key shapes like pleated maxi dresses, midi-length skirts, feminine jumpsuits, easy tunics and relaxed fit blouses embrace the grace of the fashion years gone by. Mould your wardrobe into these trends in colors like lagoon, aquamarine, blues and distress prints that simply add that charm to your look for the season. Super Surpent Prints are again big this season and you cannot miss the much sought after snake print trend which makes an appearance ever so often on the runway. Marry glamour with snake print and what you have is a collection consisting of drape maxi dress, wrap tops, east soft peplums and slim pants. Incorporate this exotic print in elegant and classy evening wear in rich colors like maize yellow, imperial purple and black. For a more chic and less edgy feel you can expect the sketchy floral prints to do the rounds as well in subtle pastels shades. Elegant Simplicity: This is a very clean sophisticated line heavily inspired by the masculine feminine look with asymmetry quite dominant in the collection. Relaxed, asymmetrical cuts and shapes are a strong feature with trapeze maxi, boxy tops, peplum shapes and drape easy tops with an overall neutral palette with one strong accent color for that pop. Masculine shapes also make an appearance in this collection with relaxed fits. It’s all about adopting a slightly masculine silhouette yet retaining that feminine charm. Pieces like double–breasted jumpsuits, box pleated skirts and structured shifts in key hues like wax yellow, black and grey are in trend under prints like marble illusions and mineral cracks. Sports Luxe: Embrace the spirit of sports and welcome the fuss-free easy silhouettes that are part of this trend. Look sporty glam in biker jackets, strappy shift dresses, asymmetrical skirts, crop tops and luxe bomber jackets. The pieces get a touch of sophistication with the use of mesh and piping in a burst of colors like tangerine orange, mustard, black and ivory. Alessandra Vicedomini Italian designer Alessandra Vicedomini has reinvented the Vicedomini brand of luxury clothing. Established in 1962 in Milan, Vicedomini is known for its sophisticated designes and refined tailoring. Alessandra now takes the brand in a new direction, focusing on chic and feminine knitwear. Also new to the brand is her range of jewelry including brooches and small accessories, as well as a footwear line. The production is still based entirely in Italy, staying true to the heritage of Vicedomini. Alessandra met with Styles to elaborate on the fresh new look of the brand. Styles: Your father’s brand has been around for quite some time, more than five decades. It was brave of you to go and take that brand and modify it to fit the modern woman of today. What made you want to take that step, and was it a challenge for you? Alessandra: Actually it just came to me. It was never my plan to take my family’s brand and revamp it. This is what happened, but it was not my initial intention. What happened is that my mother had a car accident, and the brand was left for a long time just continuing with very basic collections. That was not what my father wanted to do, so he kind of stopped production. I was getting married so I was very busy and couldn’t contribute anything, and my brothers and sisters couldn’t either. When I started to do my own thing, I wanted to do knitwear, because knitwear is easier and more casual, and it quickly went into our brand’s stores. Eventually I was requested to make collections that were richer and more seasonal. So in two years basically, I said “Okay, I need to structure myself, I need to do two collections a year, so that I can continue what has been started.” After starting in knitwear I really didn’t want to go back to fabrics, because like I said, there is so much I love about knitwear. Styles: So this is something very new that you’re introducing into the brand? Alessandra: It’s been ten years since I started doing knitwear, but it can be seen as a new division of the same brand. Knitwear is easier, there’s a large request on the market, and it’s cozier. Maybe it’s a bit personal, because it corresponds to my life, and I can relate to this kind of fashion. I’m always running around everywhere, so I need to be sexy, corporate, elegant, and comfortable at the same time. I’m always on the go. I think the women of today can buy any of my dresses. You can dress it up with a Chanel jacket and it would look amazing, or wear it on its own for a more casual look and still be stylish.

Styles: Is this the first time you’ve launched shoes? Alessandra: Yes, this is the first time I’m launching shoes, but it’s just two shapes: the pump, which is transparent with different points, and the open toe heel, which is always made with either python or suede. When you buy a pair of shoes like these, except for one style which is made from two materials but is mono-color, most of them have two colors which makes them more wearable. For example, if the shoe is gold and black, it could be worn with any color. Styles: Do you feel that just one color makes and outfit look too coordinated? Alessandra: Yes, exactly. I think previous looks were more old fashion. They were using the color coordination thing. Let’s say we have a white dress, it used to be paired with a white shoe. But the new trend it to actually mix the colors instead of matching them. For instance if we have a blue outfit, we can pair it with a pink and orange sandal. Styles: We notice you have jewelry as well. Alessandra: Yes, it’s just brooches and little jewelry. I always like just one detail, I mean I wouldn’t wear earrings and a brooch and a necklace. I’m a bit of a brooch addict; I really like brooches on dresses, on coats, everything. Last year I even did some gloves with brooches! Styles: Tell us more about this line. Alessandra: If you look at my accessory line, it’s very sensual yet minimal. I don’t want to get in competition with the big stars; I think that if a dress is elegant enough you really only need one detail, and a good shoe. I’m going to do transparent shoes throughout all seasons, for winter maybe add fur or other materials. I love exotic skins as well, like python or lizard or crocodile, it’s an essential. You can wear them with jeans, with a work outfit, or for an event. Styles: How has your experience been so far in Kuwait? Alessandra: My friends took me around to visit the malls and retailers, but I’ve been doing a lot of work towards introducing the line so I haven’t seen everything. I saw the Avenues, it was very pretty and we really had a nice time. I really enjoyed the high tea. I didn’t expect such high attendance since I’m not a well-known brand here, even though the brand is well-

recognized in Europe with a good reputation, so I was pleasantly surprised. The girls are very glamorous and beautiful here. You can see that compared to the Europeans, they really take care of themselves more. There are always details in the hair, the makeup, in their way of wearing an outfit, which tells that they really care and pay a lot of attention. They take fashion very seriously, and that’s very pleasant for a designer, because in France or Italy we usually just throw a pair of jeans and a sweater on, that’s it. Maybe with a nice pair of shoes, but we rarely think about those shoes with those socks with this skirt to pair with that belt—we wouldn’t be so attentive. You see it in the final result from the moment they walk in. I remember when I was in my twenties I was dressing up much more, but now in France most people don’t even blow dry their hair, and a lot of the time they don’t even bother to wear makeup. They just throw their hair in a messy pony tail and don’t care how it looks. It’s a real clash, but I work in many countries and I travel a lot, so for me it’s fantastic to see the differences. I can really recognize everybody. I can recognize if a person is British, I know if they’re French, of course I know the Italians, the Germans, a New Yorker, I mean everybody is different. And now I can recognize a Middle Eastern person, you guys are very sophisticated. That’s my impression so far, it seems like a happy and pleasant country. Styles: Would you come back? Alessandra: Of course, I would love to! I’d like to start collaborations on a regular basis. Especially if the product is well received, then of course I will visit more often. It takes time to establish oneself and to earn a reputation in a new country, so I hope the women of Kuwait enjoy my designs.

EMAAR Properties: Not Your

Creating the places and experiences that we love so much about Dubai

W

e sat down with CEO of EMAAR Properties, Robert Booth, to find out more about Dubai’s growth as an international fashion and lifestyle hub. This leading real estate development group is known for its large-scale projects like Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. EMAAR Properties hasn’t stopped there, though. They continue to create magnificent feats of architecture and style throughout the city of Dubai, offering a fresh and innovative place for people from all over the world to come together. Their Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience hosted by Vogue Italia showcases up-and-coming designers and celebrates the rise of the fashion industry in the Middle East. We got the unique chance to speak with Booth and find out more about the event, as well as some of the new projects going on in this pioneering city. Styles: How did it all start? Booth: Even though we are real estate developers, we really see ourselves as being in the “ideas business,” by creating experiences and lifestyles. We’re constantly looking for new ideas on how we can bring different experiences to all of our developments. I think somewhere in the world our Chairman and Franca Sozzani connected and started talking about what we can do together in Dubai, and that conversation carried on and cumulated in last year’s inaugural event. There’s a general conception that Dubai is becoming a crossroads of the world, as people increasingly want to come here to see what’s happening. So it makes sense for fashion events like these to start happening in this city. Styles: Compared to last year, how has this event grown? Booth: While the first year was a huge success, this year we asked ourselves how we could differentiate it a bit, and what new twist could we bring. There are a lot more activities and we’ve provided a whole host of different ways for the community and the industry to get engaged with the Vogue fashion event. Within an hour all the online registrations for the free discussion speaker events were fully booked, which is a huge success. Also, the 28 new designers was a great way to showcase new design talent, and as I mentioned previously it speaks to how international a city like Dubai is. If you look at the list of the new designers it really reflects the way the new world works and how we’re all connected. There are so many international people on that list. And the fashion show with the eight showcases is another way to show all this new creative young talent that’s out there in the world. The program this year is very different and it’s much more engaging. Styles: Tell us about the opera house that’s being developed. Booth: Everything that we do is about lifestyle, that’s the core of our entire business. We deal with all the top architecture firms in the world, all the top interior design firms in the world, and then beyond that we’re heavily engaged in the entire art world. We take on major initiatives around significant pieces of public and sculptural art in our buildings. Burj Khalifa alone houses over 1,000 private art installations, you can take a whole art tour within the building itself. And we’re quite closely associated with retail business and the whole fashion community. We really see ourselves in the lifestyle business and the experience business where we thread everything together. We have one last piece of land within our downtown community. We took a fresh look at it over three years ago, and we created a whole opera district. Within that opera district we will have about 10 to 15 different arts and culture venues in total, and the opera house will be the major anchor. It’s currently under construction; upon completion it will be a 2000 seat multi-form theater. We could have performances like traditional classical opera shows, or Broadway plays like The Lion King, or we could even do a concert in there. We designed the theater in such a way where it will be the most advanced multi-form theater in the world. All the seats will be able to fold down and become a flat floor, on which we can have something like a catwalk for a fashion show. And around the entire opera house and the opera district we’ll have art galleries, theaters and whole host of other venues such as recital halls, all to push this notion of bringing together art, J/A 91 STYLES 54

Average Real Estate Group fashion and culture within the place that we live. We really focus on our consumers and creating experiences for them that will be memorable and keep them coming back to the place. Styles: How do you prevent people from getting bored with the place? Booth: Cities are just like living breathing organisms. They change when they get older and you have to touch things up, so we’re constantly renovating. From a retail perspective we play with our tenant mix, creating new experiences and bringing in new ideas. We keep our hospitality business fresh, and reposition in product. We’re always looking to see that we’re relevant for today. Styles: Is it hard to keep up with the constant changes that happen on a daily bases? Booth: One of the benefits of our businesses, from a group perspective, is our creativity. Because we are in the hospitality, retail, fashion and real estate business, we are constantly travelling. I’m on a plane going to New York, Paris, etc. I’m meeting different people on a regular basis to keep these ideas fresh and put them in the context of Dubai. And beyond just our core business here at a group level, we have real estate operations in 14 different countries around the world, in over 25 different cities at a corporate level, and we are constantly exchanging ideas. Styles: Do you think the Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience will make Dubai one of the fashion hubs in the world, and maybe one day will be like other major fashion capitals? Booth: We certainly think that Dubai is going to be spoken in the same language as in all those top tier cities. If you look at it, it has become a significant major hub for the world in a rather short period of time. The speed at which the city can make things happen is president, and there’s a real desire and drive to continue to push Dubai to fashion, design, and arts industries. That’s why the government launched this new Dubai Design and Fashion Council which I’m a member of to really push these initiatives forward, to make Dubai one of the leading fashion capitals of the world. It is absolutely one of our goals. Styles: As the CEO of EMAAR properties, did you predict that the growth would be this big and fast? Booth: We are big observers of some of the trends that are happening in the world and in our business. Cities are going to get bigger, which is good for our business. Our platform of being exclusive developers of large pieces of land in these cities is truly transformative. If you look at this piece of land, especially if you’ve seen images of it from ten years ago, it’s a dramatic change. When we started it we had a simple thesis: we wanted to create one of the world’s greatest urban destinations. This was a former military warehouse base, and within ten years we’ve transformed this piece of land to make it the most visited retail and lifestyle destinations in the world. It has also become a real transformation for the city of Dubai itself. It increases the awareness of people here when we do events like the talent search and highlight new designers. It’s very impactful. Styles: As a member of the Dubai Design and Fashion Council, can you tell us a little about the local fashion industry? Booth: We certainly see there’s more and more interest and desire for people locally to get into the design industry. It’s a growing business, but the business is still young and new in the region. There’s not a lot of assistance towards the young designers that need to learn about how the business of fashion. How to do simple things like how to prepare a business plan, how to engage with the retail networks and move products. I think events like this are a great start. We find designers and

give them a venue to gain awareness. We get them highly engaged with the creative side, the retailing side, the business side, and the marketing side. So it opens up perspectives of the business aspect of fashion and gives them an opportunity to see how everything works. Styles: Future projects planned for Dubai? Booth: We recently announced a major new project which is called Dubai Creek Harbor. It’s a new major development on the Dubai Creek and it’s two and a half times the size of Downtown Dubai. It will be a long-term mix use project. We also recently announced a major project called the Dubai Hills Estate, another mix use community. Styles: How do you see Dubai in ten years? Booth: At the rate things are going, if you came back here in only 3 years’ time and stood in Downtown Dubai you probably wouldn’t recognize the place. I think Dubai is going to become incredibly important, it’s going to be a city that connects the world. I believe that ten years from now, you’ll still have your four super cities like New York, Paris London, and Tokyo, but right under that you’re going to be talking about Dubai as one of the top tier cities. I think it’s going to continue to be successful and continue to grow.

YOUR WARDROBE

Chronicles of a Part-Time Styler By Rawan Qabazard

W

hat happens when you cross a punctual engineering student with a fashion obsessed editor who can never make decisions regarding her shoes before 12 p.m.? This happens: How exciting is this?! Boxing day in London, oh the joy. Too bad it’s 10 a.m. already and I’m still in bed waiting for my breakfast to arrive. I’ve heard all about the crowds, the discounts, the activities… Hold on, where are my croissants? I’m starving! As a certified shopaholic I am pleased to say that shopping isn’t always on the top of my list. Sometimes, just sometimes, food and sleep trump a good shopping trip. After my sister tore me away from the bread and butter (smelled and tasted so good) I got dressed quickly and went downstairs. Since it was freezing I wore my thermals, Zara riding pants, Pinko black shirt, my chinchilla coat, over the knee Stuart Weitzman boots, and a floppy hat. Ok wait, maybe I should go for the black Chanel boots? Or maybe a pair of sneakers. No, no, no time for that today. As soon as I left the hotel I ran back inside for my Dolce gloves. Everyone keeps saying that winter is all about layering and is easy to dress for. Well, try wearing all that and head to Selfridges. It takes effort walking in all of this. Walking into Selfridges, actually getting pushed into Selfridges, I spotted heads. Lots of them. Why is everyone here? Spread out people, spread out. “Oy, move move!” Some random person yelled at me. I went to look at the shoes. WHAT! 50% off Jimmy Choos? Move over, move over I started yelling. After grabbing a few pairs I headed to the till. Yes, a till that’s what they call a cash register here in London. I decided that I cannot bear the crowds and headed to the exit, maybe the other shops would be less crowded. Boy was I wrong, as soon as I stepped onto Oxford Street a herd of people were pushing me into the crowd. Oh that’s exciting, I took out my phone to

J/A 91 STYLES 56

with the rest of the overexcited people, every 15 minutes they let a couple of people go inside, wow how professional of them. I was preparing my phone to take snaps of me with the so called “angel” when were let in. 1 hour 15 minutes of waiting… for what you may ask? Well, there weren’t any models. The line was to actual ENTER the store and the excitement was for the “Buy one, get one half price” promotion on bras. Seriously? These people need to get a life if that’s what excites them.

snap this moment, because you know that’s what us basic Kuwaities do in moments like these. I hear my friend yelling “they’ll grab your phone stupid, put it back inside.” But I continued taking a video “OMG you guys check out the…” I didn’t even get to finish my video when a lady behind me screamed at me “yo, don’t get me in yo Snapchat.” Umm, chill you weren’t in it. It was too cold so we decided on a coffee break, as we headed to South Molten Street, the trip that usually takes approximately 7 minutes, took us 27! As I got my usual grande skinny vanilla latte I sat at the window and surveyed the shoppers outside running to get their bargain buys, trampling over each other in the process. A few minutes later we tried continuing our shopping trip and headed to New Bond Street. Okay less crowded, but still a bit too much for me to handle. We were heading to Fenwick when I spotted the huge Victoria’s Secret store and an extremely long queue of people waiting, waiting for what I asked? “OMG there must be a VS angel coming soon let’s line up!” We waiting outside

Stepping out disappointed I decided to take a look at a few high-end boutiques hoping that there would be crazy discounts too. Entering Chanel I guessed judging by the new collection in the windows there won’t be any discounts in here. Oh well, I went in and bought myself a little present. As we headed back to Oxford Street hoping the crowds at Selfridges were less than before I heard a guy scream and I felt someone tugging at my micro Lady Dior. “Hey! Leave my lady alone.” I screamed at someone who I can’t even see. Ok that’s creepy. I continued walking in the crowd of people and I felt someone tugging at my purchases, ok I need to run. But run where?? I fought away the hand and ran into the first store I saw which was Debenhams. Ohh make-up! As people went through the clothes and shoes I spent hours at the make-up counters trying on new products and ended up buying stuff I knew I was never going to use. But you know, I’m a sucker when it comes to cute packaging and excellent marketing ploys. After that exhausting but productive shopping day I sat down at the Creperie and had my usual skimmed latte with a Nutella crepe stuffed with strawberries. After I was done I took a moment and thought about something. How hard is it to choose between shopping, eating, and sleeping? Well it’s hard enough for me when I’m on vacation because back home between choosing which shoe to wear, what time my class is, and when my article is due, I have no time for all three! Until next time… R xx

YOUR WARDROBE

The story begins like a fairytale…

I

n 1896, Estelle Arpels, daughter of a precious stones dealer, marries Alfred Van Cleef, who comes from a long line of Dutch craftsmen specializing in cutting precious stones. He is 24, she is 19, and both have been part of the world of fine jewelry since childhood. Youthful enthusiasm, a passion for jewelry, a taste for taking on a challenge, and constant family support: all combine to promote the partnership of the two families. Their new company will “serve as an enterprise to create and sell jewelry”. In 1906, they register the name “Van Cleef & Arpels” and set up shop on the Place Vendôme. Today, Van Cleef & Arpels is still located at 22, Place Vendôme. The former private salons have been replaced by a boutique which is undergoing a stunning redesign to celebrate its centennial year. And if Van Cleef & Arpels is now ranked one of the pioneers on the Place Vendôme, it is because the House has always trusted its intuition. It is also because the House has perpetuated that special sense of fraternity born of the union of two families who were committed to devoting their best efforts to a project that would eventually surpass even their own dreams. This is the unique spirit of Van Cleef & Arpels. The two families shared with their customers a certain Arpels and Alfred philosophy of life dominated by respect for the past as well as Estelle Van Cleef marry in 1896. a love for beauty, a passion for travel and a quest for harmony. These are fundamental, timeless values which continue to link Van Cleef and Arpels with those who wear the House’s creations. Sophistication and an effortless natural elegance with nothing obvious about it, that’s what characterizes the style of Van Cleef and Arpels.

Five Variations on the theme of renewal Times change, the spirit remains. The loyalty to the House’s values means that new collections and creations are born but the traditional craftsmanship is carried on from generation to generation. Van Cleef and Arpels expresses this perception of time as renewal through five special themes, together or separate: Nature, Couture, the world of Fairies and Ballerinas, Art Deco and Transformation.

Van Cleef & Arpels, 22 place Vendôme, Paris.

Années Folles necklace, Couture collection, 2004

1. Springtime, the soul of Nature Synonymous with freshness and vitality, youth and spontaneity, movement, desire and creativity. The creations portray colorful bouquets, rustling palm leaves, plump peonies and roses in full bloom, dragonflies with their shimmering wings… the House dares the unexpected in a quest for lightness, adapting its materials so that nothing ever seems fixed or lifeless.

2. The seasons of Couture Another world continually being renewed is that of Couture. Glowing gold lacework, tassels of precious stones, sparkling embroidery, ribbons scarlet with rubies, magical zippers… the House ceaselessly explores the world of fashion and fine fabrics. In every piece of jewelry, gold, platinum and precious stones have been completely mastered by the jeweler’s hand, as fine fabrics are mastered by great fashion designers.

3. The art of Transformation

Spirit of Beauty Fairy Clip, 1944.

Because every woman loves jewelry that can adapt to any ensemble or mood. The Passe-Partout necklace, Cadenas jewelry, the famous Zip necklace and between the finger rings all illustrate this multifunctional touch that the House appreciates so much. Many of the pieces express the art of transformation; pieces can be detached, worn as hair clips, or some as ear clips, worn together or worn separately, thus, the magic of transformation.

4. Fairies and Ballerinas Who better than fairies and ballerinas to symbolize a marvelous world eternally being renewed? Inspired by dance, dreams and poetry, the creations are magical. In 2004, the house created the Midsummer Night’s Dream collection, inspired by the famed Shakespeare comedy, which included poetic clips featuring fairies and elves with diamond faces. In 2006, the House celebrated its centennial with, among others, a new High Jewelry collection featuring a theme inspires by the magic of dance with new classical ballerina and modern dancer clips. Boule ring in Mystery Setting ruby, since 1935.

5. The sobriety of Art Deco Motivated by curiosity and a sense of innovation, Van Cleef & Arpels has always created links between past and present, for example concerning the pure lines of 1930’s designs. In that era, form followed function and colors were combines in unconventional ways. The Mystery Setting technique was particularly appropriate for the sober lines of Art Deco, and example is the Boule ring in which the revolutionary setting makes an absolutely pure form even more sublime.

Seek, explore, invent.

Ruban Dentelle necklace, Mystery Setting ruby and diamond, 2005

For Van Cleef & Arpels, the spirit of innovation is essential. This spirit leads the House to perpetuate its matchless artistry while also questioning its craft and inventing new procedures and techniques. It also takes the House well beyond the Place Vendôme to travel throughout the world. Since the art of fine jewelry means never calling attention to one’s techniques, Van Cleef & Arpels developed a unique new setting, the Mystery Setting. Another technical achievement of a very different type was the Minaudière, which involves a variety of refined details.

The Mystery Setting Precious stones in a piece of jewelry with no visible setting: this is the Mystery Setting created by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1933, patented in 1934 and perfected ever since. A masterpiece of virtuosity, a piece of jewelry involving the Mystery Setting requires months of work by the House’s most accomplished jewelers, known in the Van Cleef & Arpels Ateliers as the “Mains d’or” (golden hands). The secret of the Mystery Setting is an extremely delicate web of gold on which precious stones are set one by one. The Mystery Setting is employed in a number of classic pieces, including the Boule ring and the Ruban necklace, and continues to feature in new creations like the Millenium clip whose blooming flowers seem to tremble in the breeze, or, more recently, the Forêt ring.

The Minaudière One day, as Louis Arpels’ friend Florence Jay Gould, wife of the railroad magnate, was hurrying out the door, Charles Arpels saw her quickly toss her powder compact, lipstick, handkerchief, comb, lighter and keys…in a little white metal box. In that moment he decided to create an elegant, precious box to carry all these items and make them easily accessible. The Minaudière was born. An elegant precursor to the vanity case, the Minaudière was also a tribute to Estelle Arpels, who, according to her brothers and husband, loved to “minauder”: to simper in a very feminine fashion. In a rectangular shape and made from the most precious metals (platinum, black lacquer) and with clasps adorned with jewels that could be removed and worn as clips or on a belt, the Minaudière, in versions to match any ensemble, quickly became an indispensable accessory for fashionable women.

YOUR WARDROBE ADVERTORIAL

Annelise Michelson “I don’t want to make women look pretty and harmless,” explains Annelise, “Women are sexy, desirable, and complex. I want to give them weapons.” She expresses this attitude in her edgy jewelry line, which features pieces that can turn even the daintiest girl into a force to reckon with. Annelise’s jewelry has been worn by influential people such as Alexa Chung, Rihanna, MIA, and Lady Gaga (to name just a few), and is taking the fashion world by storm. Styles spoke with the designer to learn more about her and her line. Styles: How would you describe your personal style and how would your jewelry fit into it? Annelise: I change my look every day, so I cannot say that there is only one way to wear the pieces. It is up to you, your state of mind. It could be with the little black dress, super sexy. Or it could be something very colorful and extravagant, it is really about you, and what you want to express. Styles: Who would you consider to be your muses? Annelise: I have many muses– Grace Jones, Alison Mosshart from The Kills, Debbie Harry from Blondie, FKA Twiggs... And all strong women with striking personalities and style; they are my everyday inspiration. Styles: Who would you envision wearing your work? Do you think about this when you work on your designs? Annelise: I am very happy that so many great and inspiring people are already wearing my pieces. Any woman with style and personality wearing my pieces makes me excited and inspired. It’s not always about the popularity, but of course it’s nice when someone famous wears your pieces. To see someone who has good taste liking your pieces is just the best compliment you can get.

Designer Annelise Michelson

Styles: How do you approach a new collection? Where do your ideas evolve from? Annelise: Sculptures, furniture, design. Everything I can look at that catches my attention. It could be random stuff, like something that I see on the street or an interesting tool. The more graphic the better, but it is also about shapes. And what I I’m trying to express. Styles: What is your jewelry philosophy, how do you like to wear your favorite pieces? Annelise: Too much is not enough! Styles: What is your favorite material to work with and why? Annelise: Bronze, because it’s a noble mix of metals and it always reminds me of sculptures. Styles: What aspects are you most interested in exploring these days in terms of design? Annelise: I’m trying to create new and differently designed pieces. I want to keep people surprised and amused! Styles: Your works are not inspired by the traditional idea of handcrafted jewelry. Annelise: I don’t look at jewelry from the past. I try to look at jewelry that doesn’t yet exist; jewelry of the future. Stepping away from the ready-to-wear, I have more of a ‘’fashion’’ way of looking at jewelry. It has to be a part of an outfit, a feeling, part of what is going on. It’s like trying to catch the times and put them into a shape. Styles: Tell us a little bit about Annelise. Any habits you wish you could change? What do you do in your spare time? What are some things you can’t live without? Annelise: Doing more sports would be nice. I travel a lot, that’s what I enjoy the most. It is also very important for me to keep in touch with all the other platforms of creation, such as all aspects of design, performance, exhibits, concerts, etc. It keeps me excited about what I could do and what I want to express. The one thing I can’t live without my favorite epicurean habit, the best French way of chilling after work: 8pm terrace with friends! J/A 91 STYLES 67

The design of the Arceau Automatic watch embodies an authentic signature, combining elegance and style, with harmoniously balanced proportions. The centre of the opaline silvered dial is stamped with the herringbone motif, while two slender hands sweep around the twelve sloping numerals characterising the Arceau line. Designed by Henri d’Origny in 1978, the Arceau is the most classical of Hermès watches. Inspired by the characteristic elegance of horses, its asymmetric lugs echo the shape and curve of a stirrup. The spirit of the house is perfectly reflected by the line – it is after all an object born of creative passion and carefully mastered production, evidenced from the design of the case to the craftsmanship on the strap, and in the making of exclusive hand-finished movements.

Van Cleef & Arpels

Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantée Poetic Complication Inspiration: the grace of Van Cleef & Arpels’ ballerinas Depicting a female figure – part dancer, part butterfly – this creation perpetuates the tradition of ballerinas and fairies to which the Maison is so attached. It dates from the 1940s, when Van Cleef & Arpels developed a reputation for these playful yet graceful clips, which immediately began to draw the attention of collectors. Louis Arpels (one of Estelle Arpels’ brothers) – who was settled in New York at that time – was a passionate devotee of dance and opera. At his prompting, the Maison created a multitude of ballerinas inspired by legendary personalities such as La Camargo, the 18th century dancer, or the well-known Russian prima ballerina Anna Pavlova. The dance theme still exerts an influence over the Maison today. For its Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantée watch, Van Cleef & Arpels has drawn inspiration from a quote by Anna Pavlova which echoes the imagery of the Maison: ‘‘I’ve been dreaming that I was a ballerina, and that I was spending my whole life dancing as lightly as a butterfly…’’

A double retrograde movement with time on demand With this double retrograde movement with time on demand, the Maison once again emphasizes its poetic vision of time. On a watch with a retrograde display, the hands – instead of turning about an axis – trace an arc before returning to their initial position to begin another cycle.

Savoir-faire: lightness and depth A true miniature figurine, the golden ballerina is sculpted in relief and set with diamonds, emphasizing her waist and face. The layered veils of her tutu, light and transparent, create the magic of the piece. While an inner corolla of champlevé enamel clothes the dancer, the outer veils – like a pair of openwork wings – come to life to display the time. This elegant tableau stands out against a guilloché background, whose radiating motif adds to the dial’s vitality. Several layers of translucent Grand Feu enamel are then applied to lend depth and brilliance to the ensemble.

Here, when the user presses a button at the 8 o’clock position, the ballerina’s tutu comes to life. The veil indicating the hours rises first, followed by the second veil which positions itself against the minute scale. They remain in place; enabling the time to be read, then return simultaneously to their initial positions. One of the feats of this complication lies in its fluid movement: the ballerina appears to move her wings with grace and poise.

A world of elegant, innovative jewelry that speaks Italian Fope is an Italian goldsmith, an international company, a tradition that has evolved to become one of the world’s most sought-after jewelry brands. Its headquarters - management and production - are located in Vicenza, Italy, where the company was established in 1929 and where a continuous progress proudly takes place thanks to the skilled craftsmen and to the precision of the machines, most of which are custom-made. Tommaso Foralosso, Marketing Director at Fope, told Styles, “We are here now to introduce one of our top collections, Mialuce. It’s quite new, especially for Kuwait. Mialuce means “My Light,” and it consists of rich Italian gold with the best quality of diamonds.”

Every day, every jewel is created in-house with love and passion under the guidance of the third and fourth generation of the founding family, and then it is shipped to the best stores around the world. “This collection is much related to the classic jewelry, but we use the latest technique of gold craftsmanship,” explained Foralosso. Fope is famous for its innovative production of flexible gold jewelry, a technique which has never acheieved in the past. “I believe it can be very suitable to the Arab countries, because it’s quite bold, you can see it,” Foralosso said, “We pay a lot of attention to the little things; the luxury is in the details.” Communication-wise, Fope has always had a distinctive tone: from the most ironic advertising campaigns in the 90s to the recent collaborations with four high-caliber Italian artists, consumers are used to enjoying the brand’s original messages and highly recognizable visuals. The protagonist of the 2013/2014 advertising campaign is Anna Valle, an Italian actress with a Miss Italia background who has proved her acting talent in Italian theatres, TV series and movies, becoming a beloved celebrity. Her natural elegance and genuine beauty make her the perfect spokesperson for Fope. J/A STYLES 72

The setting of all the five visuals is Palazzo Bertolini, an inspiring Renaissance gem set in the heart of Vicenza’s historic centre where high ceilings with wooden beams and original frescos are paired with some striking contemporary furniture. A choice that celebrates Fope’s Italian roots and innovative soul. These days Fope is also launching a new wider project called “A tale of beauty”, one which will revolutionize the company’s communication. Consumers will be engaged in a journey through the essence of Italian style, thanks to Fope jewelry and to the experience of a landscape which is both physical and sentimental. Nature, culture, roots and visions of the past entwined with contemplation of the present… Fope presents a plot that keeps renewing for each season that passes, with the gold and diamonds of its collections that define new rules of style for our times. In terms of the brand’s arrival in Kuwait, Foralosso said, “So far we’ve gotten a good response from the Kuwait consumers. We are a gold company, we deal with gold craftsmanship. It is clear that gold is an important part of this country. In this case, more is more, rather than less is more. This line’s jewelry is bigger and more expensive of course. We hope it is well-recieved here.” Fope is available at Damas Boutique AlRaya Mall

Originals “Wings 2.0” Fragrance Jeremy Scott is known for his wacky collaborations with Adidas Originals but this next project is something we haven’t seen from the pair yet – a fragrance. The very limited edition Eau De Toilette will come in the shape of the much loved Jeremy Scott x Adidas Originals “Wings 2.0” sneaker (what else would you expect from the king of out-of-this-world sneakers!). The unisex scent, which was created by famed perfumers Philippe Roques and Maurice Roucel, opens with the feminine top notes of rose and Calabrian bergamot but the heart of the scent, however, consists of the more masculine white pepper, incense, and cashmeran. The resulting whimsical aroma perfectly represents designer Jeremy Scott’s eccentric personality and will be limited to just 10,000 exclusive bottles.

ashion can be categorized in different ways. Different people have different styles, wear different things, have different limits, etc. But everyone has their own limits, what you may consider over the top might be okay for someone else. From completely sheer dresses to ponchos and over the knee boots, fashion has not seen any limits yet and we’re guessing 2015 is going to cross that imaginary red line for everyone. Celebrities and style icons have paved the way for us to experiment with what we like to wear. Identity and personal style are so deeply intertwined that even trends are asking us to be ourselves. Fashion rules are a bit confusing. We all feel social pressure to follow specific norms which differs in every society. Some people talk about morality while others argue that it’s all about self-expression. For example, a basic little black dress, we might style it with a pair of Gina sandals and a fur vest and a red lip. Another person might add a pair of purple tights and a leather jacket with nude makeup and a slick ponytail. The question is how far are you willing to go past your red line this year?

J/A 91 STYLES 76

Through the years designers go past traditions and come out with something that will excite some, anger some, or just fool some. Going against traditions and beyond the norms isn’t something outrageous nowadays like it used to be. Designers such as Yves Saint Laurent brought out a lot of social issues such as feminism whilst designing. He introduced the modern tuxedo for women. A photograph of model Marlene Dietrich wearing a blazer that, at the time, was merely for men only was shocking for everyone. At the height of femininity, this imposed a huge message that people took in and changed a lot of how people thought of the issue. Another designer who took a huge leap was Christian Dior. At a time when women were used to showing skin he designed a collection of dresses that covered the legs. Women were outraged at this and considered it offensive.

JUST BREATHE Woody Wonders LADY GAGA Eau De Gaga Dangerously daring, Eau De Gaga represents the future of a scent that appeals to both men and women; nothing is off-limits. The fragrance is built around a beautiful heart of white violet, an intoxicating flower that fuses male and female attractions. To counterbalance this opulent woody-floral intensity, the scent opens with an invigorating burst of sparkling lime that exudes dynamic vibrancy. And it evolves into a sensual trail based on leather, adding a primal quality to the scent.

CARTIER La Panthère Eau de Parfum Légère A radiant, sun-kissed version of the La Panthère perfume, this Eau de parfum légère unveils a new side to the feline floral accord, both magnetic and luminous.

SALVATORE FERRAGAMO Tuscan Scent – White The fierce wilderness of this untamed flower generates a fragrance with a strong powdery touch. White Mimosa is inspired by the sensual burst of the Mimosa flower that fills the Tuscan fields with its rare noble grace.

ROBERTO CAVALLI Oud Al Qasr This voyage begins in the Atlas Mountains with the majestic power of cedar. The oud accord that forms the heart note of the fragrance prolongs this woody opening but adds a warm and sensuous dimension, a sense of luxurious mystery. The ambery base note comes from Labdanum, a handharvested gum extract that has been used in perfumery for more than 3000 years. Facetted with pure vanilla, it gives depth and opulence to this uncompromisingly rich elixir.

Beauty Workshop Interview with Fyza Ali

A beauty workshop was recently held by Beidoun featuring the famous sisters Fyza and Sonia Ali who were taught by one of the world’s finest make-up artists who also happens to be The Kardashian’s make-up artist. While Fyza was the make-up artist and Sonia is the muse; the pair really do know their stuff! We enjoyed a three day seminar which was fun and also educational at the same time. We also had a few minutes to have a chat with Fyza about how she started off and also gave us a few tips for us to share with you guys! Styles: Where do you get your inspiration from? Fyza Ali: I started off when I was at school. I used to do a lot of artwork, I used to find it fun and realized that I wanted to do fashion sketches at the time and my mom said that it was too much of a hard industry to get into. Then I went into hairdressing straight after and in hairdressing I started learning color correcting and the color wheel and that’s when realized I wanted to do makeup because I used to practice on my sister all the time. S: Who are some people that inspired you throughout your career? FA: I started reading a lot of books by Kevyn Aucoin and Scott Barnes they were my main inspiration because Scott Barnes was the one who created the Jennifer Lopez glow and that’s why he’s a big inspiration. Kevyn has a lot of great books and he’s the one behind the under-eye highlight glow and contour. S: How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start in the industry? FA: Professionally since the age of 17 but I started off at 14. By 17 I knew more than most people my age would know about makeup. S: What do you love most about makeup? FA: I love how you don’t have to change your features by getting surgery and getting fillers you can work with what you already have rather than changing yourself. Make-up enhances women and I like the fact that when they look in the mirror they look beautiful because it makes me feel really good making another woman look really good and bringing out the best in her.

J/A 91 STYLES 82

S: If you weren’t a makeup artist, what else would you do? FA: A Police officer S: How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists? FA: A brown glittery smoky eye using kohl pencils, pressed shadows, baked shadows, with a lot of black eye-liner and individual lashes. A quite contoured look with a matte pinky nude lip and a bronzy glow on the skin. This is the most requested by all the brides. I focus on skin; others focus on perfecting the smoky eye and contouring. Color correcting is my main focus and color correcting someone’s flaws like dark circles or pigmentations. I think that sets me apart from the others because I kind of study their face before I get into it. A lot of makeup artists kind of do the same thing for every face, I like to look at everyone in a different way and I like to mix high-end and drugstore products. S: If you were in a hurry and you had only 5 minutes to do your makeup, what would you have on? FA: Tinted moisturizer with my fingers from Laura Mercier, I put on my Tarte concealer which is a stick because you literally just put it on and blend it with your fingers, my Kiko mascara, and baby lips by Maybelline. S: What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women in this region? FA: Prepping your skin before makeup and skincare is really important. Use a good exfoliator like the Lush cosmetics one. Also, knowing your skin type will help you a lot with your makeup.

“I study their face before I apply makeup” S: What are the common beauty mistakes that women make? FA: Taking the contour and blusher too low and the colors for the nose contour look too dirty and too orange. S: What products do you think should be a staple in every woman’s purse? FA: Perfect nude lipstick and a really good mascara for volume and lengthening. S: Who is your favorite beauty icon and why? FA: My favorite makeup artist would be Kevyn Acoin. He brought out the idea that you can go as heavy as you want with the base without having people say oh you have a lot of makeup on. He is also one of the oldest makeup artists. He had his own techniques and a lot of books about the face. As for celebrities, Kim Kardashian would be my pick. She kind of paved the way for Middle Eastern girls for having dark hair and tanned skin in the West. Also, her make-up is always flawless. Another I would pick would be Jennifer Lopez because of her healthy glow which I love.

Favorites:

Makeup brush: 138 by MAC because I use it for most things. Lipstick: Velvet teddy by MAC. Foundation: Makeup Forever HD Foundation.

BEAUTY REPORT Fierce Falsies

The beauty industry is strongly influenced by the fashion industry who’s influenced by… etc. The list goes on! We saw a lot of fierce lashes and strong eyes on the runway this season and we came to a conclusion that lashes are a must! Enhance your own or put on a pair, whichever makes you feel confident and sexy. Let’s start from the basics and work our way up:

1 2 3 4 5

If you have naturally long lashes or you’re not a fan of falsies, go for an extreme volumizing and lengthening mascara. Line your lash line with black eye shadow or a black kohl pencil and apply the mascara generously to your top and bottom lashes. Wait for it to dry before you start batting them! If you want ultra-long lashes, we suggest putting on a strip of falsies after your eyeliner. How to? Add glue to the edge of the lashes, wait 10 seconds for them to dry, stick them on using a pair of eyelash tweezers. Apply mascara after to make your natural lashes stick to the falsies for a more natural look. A different approach would be using the individual false lashes. With these you can control how long your lashes are and how much volume you would want. For a natural look, just fill in the spaces between your lashes. If you’re going all out apply a full set.

Eyelash extensions are a big thing nowadays; some may last for 2 weeks while others would last for 2 months! Imagine waking up with a full set of voluminous long lashes. Now that’s a look we’d love. However, do be careful because pulling off one of those lash extensions can cause permanent loss to your natural lashes! While all the false lash application gives you the perfect lashes, using all that glue and mascara can damage your natural lashes. Apply castor oil to your lashes every time to keep them naturally beautiful and healthy! Now go ahead and as Sebastian from The Little Mermaid had said “You gotta look your best! You gotta bat your eyes like this… You gotta pucker up your lips like this..!”

Apply onto clean skin and massage for a minute, then apply another layer and let it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse and apply your moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

If you have really dry skin, warm up a spoon of honey and mash with a banana until its smooth and can be applied to your face. Leave on for 10 minutes then rinse and apply your moisturizer.

A good hydrating and exfoliating mask is banana, honey, lemon and cucumber. Take half a banana, and half a cucumber in a food processor and mash. Then add the other ingredients and blend. Spread this mixture on your clean face for half an hour. Then rinse! Your skin will feel so nourished.

To treat acne, mash up a banana and add ½ tsp. of baking soda and ½ tsp. of turmeric powder and mix. If the mixture is too thick, add a little bit of water. Apply on clean face using a brush because the turmeric may stain your fingers. (The turmeric has strong antibacterial properties which kills bacteria to prevent acne). Leave on your face for 10 to 15 minutes then rinse with cold water and moisturize.

Sleep Like a Pro The obvious solution to waking up earlier and easier is to get enough sleep in the first place. When we’re sleep deprived, our reaction times are slower, our blood pressure rises, and we tend to eat more… who wants that?! Keep the electronics away. Remove all reminders of work-related stress from the bedroom, including laptops and phones. It’s also best to stop using all electronics 45 to 60 minutes before bedtime (Instagram can wait ‘til morning!). Position yourself right. Many doctors agree that sleeping on your back is best to prevent back pain, while sleeping on your side is best at preventing heartburn. Sleeping on your stomach may help stop snoring, but can lead to neck or back pain in some. Watch out for danger foods Spicy foods can cause heartburn or indigestion, chocolate has sneaky caffeine that could keep you up, and protein-rich foods like red meat are difficult to digest which may disturb sleep. It’s best to stay away from foods like these close to bedtime and instead have a cup of tea (try chamomile or lavender) or warm milk before snoozing. Grab a book Snuggle up with a novel or some nonfiction before bed to help tire out your eyes and wind down. Alternatively, you can grab a journal and write down your thoughts for a few minutes.

Howtoto How Become Become a Morning

a Morning

Person

Person

You’ve tried getting yourself into bed before midnight, setting your alarm to blare heavy metal, and downing a gallon of coffee before even opening your eyes in the morning. But becoming a morning person is more than just forcing yourself to rise with the sun. People who wake up earlier tend to feel more optimistic and proactive, and can even be healthier and less stressed than those who stay under the covers until noon. So if you hate the morning alarm clock but wish you didn’t, here are some tips to wake up on the right side of the bed every morning.

One of the best ways to become a morning person is to get yourself used to waking up and sleeping at the same time every day – which includes weekends (sorry!). If you start going to sleep and waking up at the same time daily, your body will naturally begin to feel tired and awake at those times. Start slowly. Pick a time you’d like to be awake by and gradually work towards it. Want to wake up at 8 but can’t get out of bed till 9? Start by setting your alarm for 8:45, and move down in 15-minutes increments every couple of days. Set some happy tunes. Skip the beeps and blares and set an alarm tone that’s something soothing or fun, like your favorite upbeat song. Don’t lounge. Make sure to get some movement in soon after waking up, which will naturally make the body feel more energetic. Even if you just have time for a few jumping jacks, your body will get the message that it’s no longer sleepy time. Have a routine. Shower, breakfast, read the morning news. Creating and maintaining a morning routine will make getting up easier and more enjoyable.

Take a warm shower Stepping out of a warm shower and into a cooler bedroom will cause a slight decrease in body temperature, which triggers a tranquil, drowsy feeling. Listen up Listening to white noise, nature sounds, mellow music, or an audiobook can help lull you to sleep in no time.

Wake Up Like a Boss

Try doing these things and we guarantee that you’ll be an early bird in no time. So go home, have a warm cup of tea, and get to bed, ladies!

Skip the snooze. Hitting the snooze button always sounds like a great idea, but in reality it can actually disrupt your sleep cycle leading to less restful sleep. Falling back asleep for those few extra minutes leaves you feeling more tired than if you got up with your first alarm.

Around the World Festivals Capetown January Festival

K

aapse Klopse, the cultural festival of music and dance , floods the city with colors, songs and drumbeats. This carnival takes place every 2nd of January in the mother city and is also known as Capetown Minstrel Carnival, Sara Masouh writes. The public is invited to watch a thousand locals of the Cape divided into well trained mistrel troupes which march through the city’s roads from Zonnebloem to the Bo-Kaap covered in glitter and with their faces painted , hats and parasols, blowing on trumpets and playing on banjos performing their musical style called the Ghoema. This parade is known as Tweede Nuwe Jaar (Second New Year) and the reason is very clear; what tourists may not realize is that after the open air celebrations take place, the festivities turn into competitions that run Every Saturday until Mid February at the Athlone Stadium in the Cape Flats. Each of the teams are identified by a unique colour scheme – these teams then compete in a wide range of different categories (best dressed team, best band, combined chorus, male solo, drum major, minstrel song and many more) for trophies, pride and the winning title. The Tweede Nuwe Jaar street party first started back in the colonial era when slavery was widespread. Local slaves – the ancestors of many of today’s Cape Minstrels – had only one day a year when they would dare to relax celebrate life. That day was the 2nd of January, when their masters sleep off the New Year’s parties the day before. The troupes have been influenced by a blend of African, European and Asian influences – to create the uniquely Capetonian sound of ghoema, as it’s known today. Interestingly, the Kaapse Klopse was known before as Coon Carnival, but the name was officially changed to avoid offending people whose face paint made them look like racoons. As history plays such an important role, today, the carnival is as much about raucous revelry and entertainment as it is about preserving an age-old custom. It goes on today because of tradition, and it will go on for the next 100 years because of that too.

The first climb is from 7am to 8am and the second from 10am to 11am. While on the climb you will have cables next to you for added security, but will have to pass some very narrow tunnels. Be prepared for a thrilling activity with beautiful views. Make sure to be physically fit before embarking on the hike and be certain to know how to use cables as the climb is quite challenging and isn’t recommended for beginners.

his dormant volcanic mountain in Tanzania is the highest in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world! Considered one of the most challenging climbs, only the brave and adventurous dare to take on the big mountain. There are seven official routes and trails for the mountain: Lemosho, Machame, Marangu, Mweka, Rongai, Shira, and Umbwe. The most scenic and most popular is Machame. The hike itself takes 6 to 7 days and is by far the most physically exerting. The easier routes for non-professional climbers are Rongai and Marangu. The first is the least scenic and the second tends to be very busy. The low temperatures, high wind chill, and altitude makes the hike extremely challenging and dangerous, so be sure to take the appropriate precautions and consult with a doctor before making the decision to pursue this adventure. If you want to take on something a bit less challenging try the Lemosho trail which can be done in two days, or take on a day trip to explore gaming and wildlife.

Bring back the spark, bring back Date Night! Date night can renew your feelings of romance by taking you back to when you were first dating and madly in love. It works, and it’s fun. Dating is a century-old tradition – let’s not let it die. Take a chance! Invite your significant other to dinner. Get nervous. Feel the butterflies. See a movie. Create a memory (even if it’s a terrible one; the story will be a delight to relive). Take your spouse or long-term partner out for a date night, so you both can focus on just each other. Dating is supposed to be fun, remember? So go out. Really, just go out. Maybe you’ll fall in love all over again. One night could change everything. Every month we’ll give you ideas on where to go, what to do and even advice on what to wear! How amazing are we? Pretty amazing. This month we decided to revisit an old favorite date night spot which has recently been reopened after some beautiful refurbishment. This place was the crème de la crème of restaurants back in the day and is now back and even better than before. Peacock restaurant at Radisson Blu is our obvious choice for this issue. Peacock is known for its romantic ambience and chic clientele, the patrons of the restaurant look like they walked off the runways of Paris Fashion Week and the food would even give the amazing French chefs a run for their money. We were greeted at the door with a warm welcome and smile by none other than Mr. Hari, who has been restaurant manager of this establishment for decades. He kindly offered to advise us on what dishes to order, and judging from our empty plates I think I’ll pass this advice onto our readers. Since the weather is pretty chilly recently, we opted for soup to start. You can’t go wrong with the chicken and corn soup which was a perfect start to the evening. If you prefer something with a kick, then the spicy hot and sour sauce soup is also a great option. As for appetizers, the deep fried prawns on toast were absolutely delicious and the vegetable spring rolls are a tried and tested classic. For our main course we opted to order 3 dishes to share. Make sure you order the small portions if you want to share the main dishes as the portions are quite big. First we ordered the Lobster Szechuan style (can also be prepared with black bean sauce), it slightly verged on the spicy side but was not in any way uncomfortable, even for someone who’s not a fan of spicy food like me. The classic sweet and sour shrimp was delicious, as was the magnolia beef. We were pretty full after all that great food but as the saying goes, there’s always room for dessert! To satisfy our sweet tooth we opted to share the banana fritters served with honey and vanilla ice cream which was a light and satisfying choice, or if you want to keep it old school, pick one of the desserts off Peacock’s retro dessert trolley. As we enjoyed our meal we chatted and enjoyed the quiet and romantic atmosphere. This date felt very “grown up” compared to some others, and while that might sound a bit strange, it’s true…It was definitely a place that felt like it was made for cozy, romantic conversations. not often that a date night out affords you a little escape of that sort, and Peacock restaurant at Radisson Blu definitely managed to do just that.

Relationships 101 Tips to strengthen your bond

By Yalda Golsharifi

1 3

You want to be his future, act like it. We base our decision on the perfect guy when he ticks all the right boxes. Our primal instinct is to go for the leader of the pack, the guy who will protect us most and has the most potential for our survival, according to what we want to achieve of course. Similarly with him, his choice for the perfect lifetime partner is the protector of his legacy, the one who will empower him to “take over the world” Which isn’t done by only being beautiful (bringing him good looking offspring). But also how powerful you make him feel. Keep in the back of your mind that you want to add to him and not to take away, men have a way of logically falling in love much more than us women. So on paper you should sound as good as you are in real life.

Be the push he needs but never asks for. Men have something in common, they always want to achieve more, but somehow get lazy or fall short just a little. Be the extra push he needs that gets his goals done. If his goal is to save money, make it easy, if its to lose weight, cook him healthy food. Asking him what he wants is not the way, because then you become a helper, you are not that, you are his push. He will thank you later, but if its something as little as helping him lose his belly fat, he will feel with you he can achieve anything.

Just how we love to be on the cover of Vogue magazine, he wants the cover of Forbes. Why wait for him to feel validated through a magazine. Be his audience and his biggest fan. This will allow him to be himself more, boost his confidence and that’s where all his potential is. When he feels he is more successful around you, chances are he will be addicted to you. After all, people don’t care what you do, they care in how you make them feel. Above feeling loved, make him feel strong, you can leave the loving to his mother.

Contrary to popular belief men are more vocal than women. We love big gestures of love and a man that would climb mountains for us. For them, they don’t really need you to do much, but more importantly than doing is how you talk to him. Remember this doesn’t mean focus on what you say, but rather how you say it. We are the emotional creatures and they need for us to be the intelligent ones when it comes to love. So no matter what mood he is in, I guarantee you can change it with your tone of voice. Even with each other, men focus on how they talk rather than what they say; this applies twice as much when it comes to the ones they love.

The V-Kool Racing Team™ of 13 Kuwaiti women rocked the racing grounds in their maiden appearance alongside 18 experienced, all-male racing teams and finished the race to the amazement of the cheering fans. The all-women racing team, assembled for the first time in Kuwait and perhaps the GCC, exhibited patience, rigor and stamina in their very first competitive outing. The V-Kool Racing Team™ team was coached and managed by Mubarak Al Rumaidhi, the 2012 Kuwait Drifting Champion and a passionate motorsports professional. “They were amazing,” he said about the all-girls team, “They listen to every rule, they take the coaching seriously and they do it right. That’s why we got zero penalties.” The team members led by Captain Najat AlSayegh included Aisha Al-Abdulkareem, Dalal Al-Jassem, Dana Jbara, Fatima Al-Shaya, Haya Al-Eisa, Lulwa Al-Sayegh, Noor Al-Sayegh, Rawya Al-Hajeri, Rabaa Al-Hajeri, Sara AlShaban, Suad Al-Fraih & Shaikha Al-Suraiya

The team gave a scintillating performance with 2 individual members Sara Al-Shaban and Dalal Al-Jassem turning in outstanding record performances. Al Rumaidhi was extremely proud, saying, “One of our drivers, Dalal Al-Jassem, stayed on the track for two hours and twenty-two minutes. Usually drivers stay for a maximum of two hours. She kept pushing for an extra twenty-two minutes, and that proved a point; that girls can do it.” Sara Al-Shaban rose up to the challenge and clocked the fastest lap by a woman earning the title of “Miss GulfRun 2014”. She started the race for the V-Kool Racing Team™ team and gained her team a comfortable position throughout her first stint of almost two hours. Fellow teammate Dana Jbara joyously stated, “Sara is our fastest driver, we call her our MVP. She’s hardcore. And she gives other drivers tips and advice; she’s the eyes for the other drivers. Sarah is the one that got the 41 seconds, which like a second away from the professionals.” Dalal Al-Jassem, gave another truly remarkable performance driving for a total of 2 hours and 22 minutes non-stop – an admirable demonstration of endurance and stamina comparable to international standards. Dalal exhibited great skill and concentration and proved to be an extraordinary sportswoman.

The enthusiasm, courage, perseverance, teamspirit and determination of this glorious band of thirteen astounded everybody. Suad Al-Fraih described the experience as “an adrenaline rush.” She went on to say, “I’m very proud to be in the first all-girls team in GulfRun, it’s such a great honor. The best part was finishing the 24 hours to prove that girls can do it, not just guys. And hopefully next time we’ll be even better and beat our current record. Most important of all is that we all worked together, our teamwork is truly amazing.” Rumaidhi remarked, “The endurance race is all about having focus and perseverance and this team has shown it has it all during the long practice sessions.” Rabaa Al-Hajeri, a team member said “although the team is new and had virtually no experience in competitive events, the natural ability of a woman to focus and concentrate for longer time spans and our well-planned approach into this race, allowed us to complete it.” Najat Al-Sayegh the team captain quoted “On behalf of the team I would like to express our joy to be a part of this historical moment, when an all-women team has come to exist and participate in an open competition. We are very thankful to our title sponsors V-Kool who have believed in our talent and given us a platform to compete in such a physically demanding race. We also thank our gold sponsors Nexen Tires, Giordano & Pastamania for supporting our initiative.”
