Men of Kuwait, “The chief beauty about time is that you cannot waste it in advance. The next year, the next day, the next hour are lying ready for you, as perfect, as unspoiled, as if you had never wasted or misapplied a single moment in all your life. You can turn over a new leaf every hour if you choose.” Arnold Bennett

So December is really here? It feels like this whole year has flown by so quickly, and to be honest, there have many accomplishments within our publishing office and our magazines, but if we take a look at our individual accomplishments, one by one, I don’t think any major accomplishment has occurred in our lives. This is why the quote above is so relevant to the whole New Year’s resolution, and “new beginnings” hype that happens every year, and is made by every person. So let’s say that we make a New Year’s resolution starting January 1st, 2014, which gives us ‘til December 31st, 2014. Like the quote says, “The chief beauty about time is that you cannot waste it in advance. The next year, the next day, the next hour are lying ready for you. You can turn over a new leaf every hour if you choose.” So you made your resolution, starting over and making new beginnings, it’s January 1st, 2014, the first day of a book that consists of 365 blank pages. Don’t be discouraged when it’s February and you’ve either given up already, or haven’t even started yet. Stay focused, don’t get too distracted, life happens, things spur up from left field sometimes that we don’t expect. Your only part is to explore all of the things you would like to happen in your life in 2014. Write them down, then cross out them out as you accomplish them. The key to writing a story is by setting goals. We hope you enjoy our last issue for the 2013 year. We look forward to a whole new 2014-year of new issues that as always, are full of the latest and greatest content, which separates RAW from every other men’s magazine in Kuwait.

The rare bunch By Ahmed Al- Ashab “A true friend never gets in your way unless you happen to be going down.” Arnold H. Glasow Twenty nine now, and still meeting new people everyday! Looking back at my past relationships, the people I was surrounded by affected me the most. There was a point where I wouldn’t see if they were good or bad, and that caused a great chain of events in my life and major changes. Through experiencing new things and meeting new people, I came to realize that one has to go through his own journey to learn what kind of people, places and things are good for them, Some people learn quickly, others take time, but eventually, drastic changes have to occur, you just have to be patient and do what you think is right for you. I tend to observe at the moment, I try to be a listener; there are people that pull you up and make you feel good about yourself and what you do, and there are others that pull you down, not to say that its other peoples problem. I think the love has to start within, I learnt to start loving my self in order in order for me to love others. of the NSA: No Detail Too Small in Quest for Total

Surveillance

The NSA gathers intelligence to keep America safe. But leaked documents reveal the NSA’s dark side – and show an agency intent on exploiting the digital revolution to the full.

Barack Obama hailed United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon as a “good friend” after the two had sat down in the White House in April to discuss the issues of the day: Syria and alleged chemical weapons attacks, North Korea, the Palestinian conflict, and climate change. But long before Ban’s limousine had even passed through the White House gates for the meeting, the US government knew what the secretary general was going to talk about, courtesy of the world’s biggest eavesdropping organization, the National Security Agency. One NSA document – leaked to the Guardian by whistleblower Edward Snowden just a month after the meeting and reported in partnership with the New York Times - boasts how the spy agency had gained “access to UN secretary general talking points prior to meeting with Potus” (president of the United States). The White House declined to comment on whether Obama had read the talking points in advance of the meeting. Spying on Ban and others at the UN is in contravention of international law, and the

December 2013

US, forced on the defensive this week over the Snowden leaks about worldwide snooping, ordered an end to surveillance of the organization, according to Reuters. That the US spied on Ban is no great surprise. What is a revealing is that the disclosure is listed in the NSA’s ‘top-secret’ weekly report from around the world as an “operational highlight”. It sits incongruously alongside other “operational highlights” from that week: details of an alleged Iranian chemical weapons program; communications relating to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria and a report about the Mexican drug cartel Los Zetas. Bracketing the benign, US-friendly Ban alongside drug traffickers and weapons in the Middle East and Central Asia points to a spy agency that has lost its sense of proportion. The incident is consistent with the portrait of the NSA that emerges from the tens of thousands of documents leaked by Snowden. Page after page shows the NSA engaged in the kind of intelligence-gathering it would be expected to carry out: eavesdropping on Taliban insurgents planning attacks in remote Afghanistan valleys, or listening in on hostage-takers in Colombia.

RAW

Portrait Of The NSA But the documents reveal, too, the darker side of the NSA. It is indiscriminate in the information it is collecting. Nothing appears to be too small for the NSA. Nothing too trivial. Rivals, enemies, allies and friends – US citizens and ‘non-Americans’ – are all scooped up. The documents show the NSA, intent on exploiting the communications revolution to the full, developing ever more intrusive programs in pursuit of its ambition to have surveillance cover of the whole planet: total command of what the NSA refers to as the ‘digital battlefield’. ‘Graying and shrinking’ When the NSA was founded in 1952, its task was primarily to target the Soviet Union. And so it did, decade after decade, until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the end of the cold war soon afterwards. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the NSA entered a decade of uncertainty. Morale slumped. The mood is caught in a document dated February 2001, only a few months before 9/11. In it, the agency admitted its capacity for intercepting electronic communications had been eroded during the 90s. “NSA’s workforce has been graying and shrinking. The operational tools have become antiquated and unable to handle the emerging signal structure,” it says. “Ten years ago we had a highly skilled workforce with intimate knowledge of the target and the tools to analyze the data. We have now reached the point of having a workforce where the majority of analysts have little-to-no experience.” Tellingly, in the light of the attacks on New York and Washington six months later, the document

complained about a lack of linguists and analysts covering Afghanistan. The same pool of experts covering Afghanistan as a whole were the same that “assist NSA’s Office of Counterterrorism in following the Taleban-Usama bin Laden relationship”, it said. ‘Sanitize personal effects’ The attacks on New York and Washington ended the NSA’s decade of torpor. Suddenly, it found funding, and staff recruitment was no longer a problem. Since 9/11, expansion has been rapid. The NSA was one of the main beneficiaries of the doubling of the intelligence budget since 9/11. Its proposed budget allocation for 2013 is $10.8bn, with 35,000 staff and bases in Georgia, Texas, Colorado, Hawaii and Utah adding to its headquarters at Fort Meade, Maryland. Its antennae can be found on the rooftops of 80 American embassies around the world. It has large posts in the UK, Australia and Japan, but also operates elsewhere, sometimes covertly. In one country, Americans are secretly present at a base where exposure of their presence would provoke a major diplomatic incident, as it is in breach of an international treaty signed by the NSA’s host nation. Agency staff visiting the base have to hide their real identities, posing as contractors working on communications equipment and carrying fake business cards to back up their story. A PowerPoint briefing warns staff heading to this secret base: “Know your cover legend”. It urges them to “sanitize personal effects” and to send no postcards home. Nor should they take souvenirs home with them. The NSA briefing

makes an exception for jewelry, because “most jewelry does not have markings identifying it” as coming from that country. The NSA refers to the people it serves as “external customers”: the White House, the State Department, the CIA, the US mission to the UN, the Defense Intelligence Agency and others. Its remit for those customers has become ever more complex. During the cold war, the NSA mainly targeted state institutions: the political, military and intelligence structures of Russia and Eastern Europe. Today, the main targets – alQaida and its related groups – are much more diffuse and elusive. The NSA sets out its mission statement in its current five-year plan. In it, the agency insists Sigint (signals intelligence, or the interception of communications) will adhere to the highest standards. “Sigint professionals must hold the moral high ground, even as terrorists or dictators seek to exploit our freedoms. Some of our adversaries will say or do anything to advance their cause; we will not.” Summing up the reason for its existence, it says: “Our mission is to answer questions about threatening activities that others mean to keep hidden.” But its actual scope goes well beyond that. It is hard to see where surveilling Ban Ki-moon, or German chancellor Angela Merkel fits into answering questions about “threatening activities”. Mission creep At a press conference in August, Obama defended the NSA and defined its role in narrow terms. He described the agency’s remit purely as counter-terrorism. “We do not have an interest in doing anything other than that,” he said. The remark was striking. Counter-terrorism has been the justification for huge budget increases, but the agency is involved in much more than that. The NSA discloses in one leaked document that only 35% of available resources are dedicated to the ‘global war on terrorism’. Obama later amended his statement. The NSA was not only engaged in counter-terrorism, he said, but also cyber-security and combating weapons of mass destruction. Even this does not begin to capture the sheer variety and reach of NSA operations. Its own list of strategic targets includes: support for US military in the field; gathering information about military technology; anticipating state instability; monitoring regional tensions; countering drug trafficking; gathering economic, political and diplomatic information; ensuring a steady and reliable energy supply for the US; and ensuring US economic advantage. It boasts it can collect information from “virtually every country”.

RAW

Global Affairs Hundreds of the documents show the NSA engaged in activities that would generally be applauded. One credits the NSA’s Texas base as intercepting 478 emails that helped to foil the Jihad Jane plot to kill Swedish artist Lars Vilks over his depiction of the prophet Muhammad. Another shows the NSA, during a deadly takeover of the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul by the insurgent Haqqani group, able to listen in, minute-by-minute, to what the gunmen were saying. There is an account, too, of the NSA’s part in disrupting a human trafficking racket based in Fuzhou, China. It led to two arrests at New York’s JFK airport. One of those lifted allegedly carried details of the smuggling routes in his pocket. Remote surroundings might fool some into thinking they are beyond snooping. An alleged drug smuggler might have thought he was relatively safe aboard a yacht in the Caribbean. But he failed to take account of the fact that his partner, also on board, was chatting on Facebook, providing valuable information about the boat’s location and planned landfall; information intercepted by one of the NSA’s intelligence partners. Nor is the Iranian leadership beyond reach. In 2009, the NSA was able to track almost every move made by Iran’s supreme leader, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on a rare visit outside Tehran to the mountainous Kordestan province. The most valuable service the NSA has provided for America and its allies since 9/11 is in support of the military in Iraq and Afghanistan. A 2007 NSA file, called ‘State of the Enterprise’, is typical of many of the spy agency’s documents, which list wartime successes. “Specific results included the identification and location of a sniper targeting personnel inside the Baghdad Green Zone; the confirmation that a CIA asset was operating as a potential ‘bad actor’.” Other intelligence agencies such as the CIA complain privately about the degree of cooperation from the NSA in sharing intelligence, but in the end, like most other intelligence agencies, it is generally thankful for it. There are complaints, too, from soldiers in the field that live information is not always transferred to them fast enough, but they, too, express gratitude for snippets passed on about potential Taliban attacks. The NSA, according to one document, overheard a Taliban figure, Mullah Rahimullah Akhund, known on the US military’s kill-or-capture list by the codename Objective Squiz Incinerator, instructing an associate to buy and organize components for a roadside bomb, suicide vests and a Japanese motorbike. The appreciation of Americans and their allies in Afghanistan for such information is summed up in this letter back to headquarters: “You guys/gals probably have no idea how much we rely on your tool for enabling our CT (counter-

December 2013

terrorism) capture operations in Afghanistan. It really does help us get our enemies off the playing field, so to speak.” Technological spread When the NSA, the CIA and other parts of the intelligence community spied illegally on American anti-war protesters, civil rights leaders and trade unionists in the 1970s, there was at least a technical limitation of their actions. The difference today is that technological revolution allows them to spy on almost everyone. The expansion in surveillance that accelerated under George W Bush has continued under Barack Obama. And this growth has not been matched by any corresponding reform of the legal framework or political oversight.

One document shows the NSA engaged in a massive snooping operation targeting a United Nations climate change conference in Bali in 2007. Ban, speaking at the conference, which attracted thousands from around the world, described combating climate change as “the moral challenge of our generation”. However, the NSA’s Australian base at Pine Gap was less interested in combating climate change than collecting the numbers of Indonesian security officials in case of a future emergency. “Highlights include the compromise of the mobile phone number” for one senior Balinese official, an NSA report boasted. “Site efforts revealed previously unknown Indonesian communications networks and postured us to increase collection in the event of a crisis.”

While there are frequent warnings in the documents reminding NSA staff of rules for protecting the privacy of Americans, other documents show repeated violations. Such violations are almost inevitable given the way the NSA collects so much, the technology and analysts unable to distinguish between data on foreigners and American citizens.

This effort-filled collection of the cell phone number falls under the category of information that spies have always gathered. The rationale is: should there be an attack at the conference or some future outrage, such numbers could be valuable. The counter-argument is that Indonesia is a friend of the US and might be expected to share information in the event of an attack, so why does the NSA devote grand resources to harvesting such numbers?

The NSA says in public it only collects a tiny percentage of internet traffic, smaller than “a dime on a basketball court”. But there is a gulf between what the NSA says in public and what it says in documents, in which technicians and analysts express their glee at finding novel ways of cracking into electronic communications and expanding their reach in ever more imaginative ways. The question critics of the NSA raise is: just because it has the technical ability to do these things, should it?

One of the biggest criticisms of bulk data collection is that the agency cannot look at, let alone analyze, all the data it is collecting. One document echoed the problems the agency faced in 2001 when it lamented the lack of linguists pre-9/11. An officer, after checking some messages that might have been from a terrorist group, admitted: “Most of it is in Arabic or Farsi, so I can’t make much of it.”

RAW

Portrait Of The NSA tion elements, particularly content-related metadata (CRI) – information derived from the message body – is content or metadata? For example, are email subject lines metadata or content? What about an email’s signature block or telephone numbers within a message? Questions like these are not necessarily clear-cut.” Gaining access to the huge classified data banks appears to be relatively easy. Legal training sessions – which may also be required for access to information from Australian, Canadian, or New Zealand agencies – suggest that gaining credentials for data is relatively easy. The sessions are often done as self-learning and self-assessment, with “multiple choice, open-book” tests done at the agent’s own desk on its “iLearn” system. Agents then copy and paste their passing result in order to gain access to the huge databases of communications. Conclusion

The 5-Eyes The NSA operates in close co-operation with four other English-speaking countries - the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand - sharing raw intelligence, funding, technical systems and personnel. Their top-level collective is known as the ‘5-Eyes’. Beyond that, the NSA has other coalitions, although intelligence-sharing is more restricted for the additional partners: the 9-Eyes, which adds Denmark, France, the Netherlands and Norway; the 14-Eyes, including Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Sweden; and 41-Eyes, adding in others in the allied coalition in Afghanistan. The exclusivity of the various coalitions grates with some, such as Germany, which is using the present controversy to seek an upgrade. Germany has long protested at its exclusion, not just from the elite 5-Eyes but even from 9-Eyes. Minutes from the UK intelligence agency GCHQ note: “The NSA’s relationship with the French was not as advanced as GCHQ’s … the Germans were a little grumpy at not being invited to join the 9-Eyes group”. Significantly, amid the German protestations of outrage over US eavesdropping on Merkel and other Germans, Berlin is using the controversy as leverage for an upgrade to 5-Eyes. The NSA’s closest ties are with the GCHQ. Documents suggest the British contribution is significant. In a random selection of NSA documents monitoring weekly reports, the British agency is frequently listed alongside the US agency’s biggest regional bases such as Texas and Georgia. GCHQ operates a vast internet tapping operation based on partner-

ships between the UK government and telecoms companies based in the UK and overseas. This allows the NSA to “touch” about 90% of the traffic crossing the UK. Given the UK’s location, this is a huge proportion of the internet: the UK hosts one of the major transatlantic internet cables, as well as numerous cables connecting Europe and the Middle East. Each day, a quarter of all internet traffic traverses the UK. The information collected and stored by the program, codenamed Tempora, is stored by GCHQ for up to a month, with NSA analysts granted direct access to the intelligence. The NSA – in theory at least – operates inside a legal framework that requires warrants to target Americans. But the Fisa court turns down few such requests. GCHQ operates in an even looser environment. One GCHQ document, referring to UK oversight, says: “So far they have always found in our favor.” A GCHQ legal briefing suggests some of the distinctions stressed in policy documents and public statements by staff of both agencies may not be so rigorously enforced in practice. A lengthy legal training slideshow includes several slides explaining the often-complex differences between content and metadata, which requires substantially different handling, especially under US law. However, the notes for the presentation say: “GCHQ policy is to treat it pretty much all the same, whether it’s content or metadata.”

The NSA, once the most secretive of the 16 US intelligence agencies but now embarrassingly penetrated as a result of Snowden, is facing more scrutiny that at any time since its founding, even more than during the domestic spying scandals of the 1970s. It is being challenged in Congress. It is being challenged in the courts by an unholy alliance of the liberal American Civil Liberties Union and the right-leaning National Rifle Association. It is coming under pressure from the internet companies to be more transparent. And there is review panel announced by Obama in August. There is also pressure from Germany and France, Mexico and Brazil. In spite of the furore, reforms may prove modest. The agency is hardly likely to easily relinquish its new-found capability of snooping almost everywhere. In one of the leaked ‘State of the Enterprise’ documents from 2007, an NSA staff member says: “The constant change in the world provides fertile ground for discovering new targets, technologies and networks that enable production of Sigint.” The official happily embraces this: “It’s becoming a cliché that a permanent state of change is the new standard. It is the world we live in – navigating through continuous whitewater.” It’s an environment in which the NSA thrives, the official says. And adds: “Lucky for us.”

The blurred boundaries are acknowledged, too, in NSA documents, one of which states: “It is often unclear whether individual communica-

A New Genetic

Revolution

* Jaw-dropping’ breakthrough hailed as landmark in fight against hereditary disease * Scientists can engineer any part of the human genome without harmful side-effects A breakthrough in genetics — described as `jaw-dropping’ by one Nobel scientist — has created intense excitement among DNA experts around the world, who believe the discovery will transform their ability to edit the genomes of all living organisms, including humans. The development has been hailed as a milestone in medical science because it promises to revolutionize the study and treatment of a range of diseases, from cancer and incurable viruses to inherited genetic disorders such as sickle-cell anemia and Down’s syndrome. For the first time, scientists are able to engineer any part of the human genome with extreme precision, using a revolutionary new technique called Crispr that has been likened to editing the individual letters on any chosen page of an encyclopedia without creating spelling mistakes. The landmark development means it is now possible to make the most accurate and detailed alterations to any specific position on the DNA of the 23 pairs of human chromosomes, without introducing unintended mutations or flaws, scientists said.

Steve Connor / The Independent / The Interview People

The technique is so accurate that scientists believe it will soon be used in gene-therapy trials on humans to treat incurable viruses such as HIV, or currently untreatable genetic disorders such as Huntington’s disease. It might also be used controversially to correct gene defects in human IVF embryos, scientists said. Until now, gene therapy has had largely to rely on highly inaccurate methods of editing the genome, often involving modified viruses that insert DNA at random into the genome — considered too risky for many patients. The new method, however, transforms genetic engineering because it is simple and easy to edit any desired part of the DNA molecule, right down to the individual chemical building-blocks or nucleotides that make up the genetic alphabet, researchers said. “Crispr is absolutely huge. It’s incredibly powerful and it has many applications, from agriculture to potential gene therapy in humans,” said Craig Mello of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, who shared the 2006 Nobel Prize in medicine for a previous genetic discovery called RNA interference. “This is really a triumph of basic science and in many ways it’s better than RNA interference. It’s a tremendous breakthrough with huge implications for molecular genetics. It’s a real gamechanger,” Professor Mello told The Independent. “It’s one of those things that you have to see to

A New Genitic Revolution believe. I read the scientific papers like everyone else, but when I saw it working in my own lab, my jaw dropped. A total novice in my lab got it to work,” Professor Mello said. In addition to engineering the genes of plants and animals, which could accelerate the development of GM crops and livestock, the Crispr technique dramatically “lowers the threshold” for carrying out “germ-line” gene therapy on human IVF embryos, Professor Mello added. Germ-line gene therapy on sperm, eggs or embryos to eliminate inherited diseases alters the DNA of all subsequent generations, but fears over its safety, and the prospect of so-called “designer babies”, has led to it being made illegal in Britain and many other countries. The new gene-editing technique could address many of the safety concerns because it is so accurate. Some scientists now believe it is only a matter of time before IVF doctors suggest that it could be used to eliminate genetic diseases from affected families, by changing an embryo’s DNA before implanting it into the womb. “If this new technique succeeds in allowing perfectly targeted correction of abnormal genes, eliminating safety concerns, then the exciting prospect is that treatments could be developed and applied to the germ line, ridding families and all their descendants of devastating inherited disorders,” said Dagan Wells, an IVF scientist at Oxford University. “It would be difficult to argue against using it if it can be shown to be as safe, reliable and effec-

tive as it appears to be. Who would condemn a child to terrible suffering and perhaps an early death when a therapy exists, capable of repairing the problem?” Dr Wells said. The Crispr process was first identified as a natural immune defense used by bacteria against invading viruses. Last year, however, scientists led by Jennifer Doudna at the University of California, Berkeley, published a seminal study showing that Crispr can be used to target any region of a genome with extreme precision with the aid of a DNA-cutting enzyme called CAS9. Since then, several teams of scientists showed that the Crispr-CAS9 system used by Professor Doudna could be adapted to work on a range of life forms, from plants and nematode worms to fruit flies and laboratory mice. Earlier this year, several teams of scientists demonstrated that it can also be used accurately to engineer the DNA of mouse embryos and even human stem cells grown in culture. Geneticists were astounded by how easy, accurate and effective it is at altering the genetic code of any life-form — and they immediately realized the therapeutic potential for medicine. “The efficiency and ease of use is completely unprecedented. I’m jumping out of my skin with excitement,” said George Church, a geneticist at Harvard University who led one of the teams that used Crispr to edit the human genome for the first time. “The new technology should permit alterations of serious genetic disorders. This could be done, in principle, at any stage of development from sperm and egg cells and IVF embryos up to the irreversible stages of the disease,” Professor Church said. David Adams, a DNA scientist at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge, said that the technique has the potential to transform the way scientists are able to manipulate the genes of all living organisms, especially patients with inherited diseases, cancer or life-long HIV infection. “This is the first time we’ve been able to edit the genome efficiently and precisely, and at a scale that means individual patient mutations can be corrected,” Dr Adams said. “There have been other technologies for editing the genome, but they all leave a `scar’ behind or foreign DNA in the genome. This leaves no scars behind and you can change the individual nucleotides of DNA — the `letters’ of the genetic textbook — without any other unwanted changes,” he said. TIMELINE: LANDMARKS IN DNA SCIENCE Restriction enzymes: allowed scientists to cut the DNA molecule at or near a recognized genetic sequence. The enzymes work well in microbes, but are more difficult to target in the more complex genomes of plants and animals. Their discovery in the 1970s opened the way for the age

of genetic engineering, from GM crops to GM animals, and led to the 1978 Nobel Prize for medicine. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR): a technique developed in 1983 by Kary Mullis in California, allowed scientists to amplify the smallest amounts of DNA — down to a single molecule — to virtually unlimited quantities. It quickly became a standard technique, especially in forensic science, where it is used routinely in analyzing the smallest tissue samples left at crime scenes. Many historical crimes have since been solved with the help of the PCR test. Mullis won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1993. RNA interference: scientists working on the changing color of petunia plants first noticed this phenomenon, which was later shown to involve RNA, a molecular cousin to DNA. In 1998, Craig Mello and Andrew Fire in the US, demonstrated the phenomenon on nematode worms, showing that small strands of RNA could be used to turn down the activity of genes, rather like a dimmer switch. They shared the 2006 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine for the discovery. Zinc fingers: complex proteins called zinc fingers, first used on mice in 1994, can cut DNA at selected sites in the genome, with the help of enzymes. Another DNA-cutting technique called Talens can do something similar. But both are cumbersome to use and difficult to operate in practice — unlike the Crispr technique. December 2013

The Rise of Ronaldo:

Galactico Who Did it the Hard Way Paul Hayward / The Daily Telegraph / The Interview People

After winning 7-3 in midweek, romantics were reminded of the great Real Madrid side that won the European Cup by the same score in 1960, and with Ronaldo at their helm, comparisons are irresistible.

If Gareth Bale scores two, Cristiano Ronaldo will help himself to three, and so on until nobody in Madrid has any doubt about who is the real “commander on the field of play”, as Fifa’s Sepp Blatter described the world’s second most expensive footballer. The first, by a few million Euros, is Bale, dismissed as “irrelevant” by the Spanish press after his underwhelming Clásico debut, but applauded for his brace in a 7–3 victory over Sevilla that stirred the ghosts of Real Madrid’s greatest European Cup win, by the same score, against Eintracht Frankfurt in Glasgow in 1960. A landslide recent league win in October bears no real comparison to the era–defining pageant of 53 years ago, except that Ronaldo’s 22nd hat–trick offers a chance to say that he is the great lone star at a club who like to arrange them in clusters. His relatively meager Spanish trophy collection of one La Liga tile and a Copa del Rey only emphasizes the point that Alfredo di Stéfano, Ferenc Puskas, Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane were infinitely more fortunate than Ronaldo with the quality all around them.

The 1950s and 1960s gang who dominated European football were built around not only Di Stéfano and Puskas, but Francisco Gento, Raymond Kopa and José Santamaria. The second great wave of galáctico–buying brought to the Bernabéu not only Figo and Zidane, but also the Brazilian Ronaldo and David Beckham. Roberto Carlos was already there, as was Raúl, who took 16 years to reach a club–record 228 league goals (Ronaldo has totted up 158 since 2009). Manchester United’s replacement for Beckham has accumulated goals mightily and relentlessly, in the shadow of a Barcelona side commonly described as the finest club team in history, and one constructed for the benefit of Ronaldo’s only serious rival in the world football: Lionel Messi. Old pros often ask the question: if you placed Messi in this Real Madrid starting XI, would he be quite as good? And if Ronaldo was transferred to Barcelona, would he inflict even more havoc with his bustling counter–attacking style, impeccable professionalism and sadistic finishing? All we know is that Ronaldo has done it the hard way. Conspicuous Consumption Era No1 for president Florentino Pérez also found room for Thomas Gravesen and Jonathan Woodgate; but there is simply no comparison between the

The Rise Of Ronaldo The pincer of Ronaldo and Bale will crush many opponents. But however well Bale adapts to the circus life of the Bernabéu it remains hard to imagine him surpassing the stratospheric levels of Ronaldo, a marvel of self–improvement who taught himself first to dazzle and then to dominate. His physical transformation from trickster to terror has been the most impressive personal leap of the past 10 years. His brilliance is attached these days to a bulldozer. Messi, on the other hand, is an older, more mature version of the boy–genius you see in his family’s early videos. The essence of his game has not altered. At United, then in Spain, Ronaldo became the player Blatter tried to describe with his military analogy. The best Real Madrid sides have been collections of world–beaters. This one rely on the consistent, pummeling power of a counter–striker who is adept with both feet, heads the ball like an English centre–half and decided, somewhere inside, that he will just have to go it alone if his team–mates cannot join him on his supremely high level. Can Bale? Could anyone?

job spec handed to Zidane and Figo and the one carried out so conscientiously by Ronaldo, who mocked Blatter’s harmless “commander” remark by military saluting each time he scored against Sevilla. History tells us Ronaldo likes to have something to kick against: brutish full–backs and Ruud van Nistelrooy in England, Messi and now Blatter in Spain. Bale, you feel, is another provocation he will welcome. A charitable team–mate might have allowed the young newbie from Wales to take the penalty for Real’s third goal to complete his hat–trick. No way. Sometimes the game throws up a great player who perpetually looks as if he is trying to prove a point. Ronaldo has that stamp. A point we all should concede is that he has carried this second Pérez–funded Real side for much of his four years at the Bernabéu. Raúl, who won six La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns, was the beneficiary of symphonic attacking football, orchestrated by Zidane. In that period Real were set up as an entertainment troupe. The team embellished by Ronaldo are more modestly constructed. Luka Modric, Sami Khedira and Karim Benzema are classy types, but Madrid have struggled to cope with the Barcelona of Messi, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and now Neymar.

World premiere of the Bugatti Legend

“Meo Constantini

December 2013

RAW

Meo Constantini Bugatti is presented the third model in its six-part edition “Les Légendes de Bugatti” at this year’s Dubai International Motor Show. This Legend car, which like all cars in the series is based on the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, pays homage to Meo Costantini. Costantini was a close friend of the company’s founder, Ettore Bugatti. He was the head of Bugatti’s factory race team for many years and was also a driver, winning the Targa Florio two times in the Bugatti Type 35, one of the most successful racing cars of all time. The Legend Edition “Meo Costantini” is priced at €2.09 million, excluding taxes and transport. As with all Bugatti Legend cars, the production run is limited to only three vehicles.

Bartolomeo “Meo” Costantini, born in 1889, was the head of Bugatti’s racing team for eight years. He developed an interest in racing cars and began racing at an early age. It was after the First World War that he first came into contact with the Bugatti brand, when he was involved in modifying a Bugatti Type 13. This is the car that Meo would drive during his first races in 1920-21. It was through these races that Ettore Bugatti first became aware of the young Italian’s talents, and he invited him to Molsheim in 1923. The two developed a close bond, and Costantini worked for Bugatti as a racing driver and advisor from that time on. As a member of the factory team in 1925 and 1926, he won the most famous and important race in its time, the Targa Florio in Sicily. In 1926, he also drove to victory at the Spanish Grand Prix and the Grand Prix of Milan, and took second place in Monza. Shortly afterwards he ended his active racing career in order to manage the Bugatti racing team, a post which he held from 1927 until 1935. Costantini stayed at Bugatti until 1937.

Bugatti Legend Car “Meo Costantini” The car is based on the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse. Its 8-liter W16 engine achieves an unparalleled torque of 1,500 Nm from 1,200 hp at 3,000–5,000 rpm, and can accelerate from 0–100 km (0 to 62 MPH) in 2.6 seconds. The Vitesse was driven to a top speed of 408.84 km (253 MPH) with the roof down in April 2013, making it the fastest production roadster ever built.

Design Exterior. The body of the Vitesse Legend “Meo Costantini” is primarily constructed of carbon fiber. The wings, doors, the parts behind the doors, the “medaillons” (French) and corners of the front bumper are rendered in aluminium. The blue paintwork on the carbon fiber parts references France’s classic motor sport color, as well as the Type 35. The new paint color “Bugatti Dark Blue Sport” has been specially developed for the vehicle. The aluminium parts are hand-polished and coated with clear lacquer. Bugatti is the only production manufacturer to offer polished clear-coated aluminium bodywork. Another special feature of this car is that individual parts have two different paint finishes. This requires great skill, and is particularly impressive to see on the wings, which are finished in both clear lacquer and blue paint. As a reference to Costantini’s victory at Targa Florio, the silhouette of the historic race course is painted on the underside of the rear wing (air-brake) in “Bugatti Dark Blue Sport.” Another feature that pays tribute to the illustrious racing driver is his signature, which is laser-engraved into the aluminium tank and oil caps and painted in silver. Interior. The interior of the Legend Vitesse “Meo Costantini” is completely upholstered in leather. The roof, footwell, center sections of the seats and rear wall are all in the color “Gaucho”, a sophisticated cognac tone. The seat’s side cushions, arm rests, extended center console, door panels, dash panel, instrument panel and steering wheel are all trimmed in dark blue leather in the “Lake Blue” color. The decorative stitching in contrasting light blue (“Bugatti Light Blue Sport”) lends an expressive touch. A brief glance into the interior makes it immediately clear to whom the car is dedicated. The head restraints are embroidered with Meo Costantini’s signature in “Bugatti Light Blue Sport,” whilst the cover of the rear center box features the eye-catching silhouette of the Targa Florio race route. The silhouette is portrayed in a milled and polished aluminium relief that has been attached directly below the EB logo on the cover, itself crafted from dark blue clear-coated carbon fiber. A special highlight of the interior is the racing scenes and vintage car motifs on the doors, which have been laser-engraved into the leather trim with the utmost precision and attention to detail. These images illustrate the most glorious moments of Meo Costantini’s racing career and the exciting world of motor racing in the 1920s. The interior trim of the door pockets and door handle recesses in “Bugatti Light Blue Sport” adds a dash of color. The Vitesse Legend “Meo Costantini” also shares several features with the other Legend cars in the Edition, including the inlay in the extended section of the center console, crafted of clear-coated carbon fiber and sporting the Legend logo with the famous Bugatti elephant, and the door sill strips displaying the likeness and signature of Meo Costantini.

Bugatti Type 35: One of the most successful racing cars of all time The Bugatti Type 35 numbers among the brand’s most outstanding vehicles. With more than 2,000 victories, this is one of the most successful racing cars in motorsports history. In line with the motto “Race on Sunday, sell on Monday”, the Type 35 brought a golden era to the Molsheim-based company, with Ettore Bugatti selling many Type 35s directly to wealthy racing drivers directly after the races. In its time, the Type 35 was the only car that could be driven both on the race track and on public roads. Meo Costantini achieved almost all of his victories in a Type 35. The racing car draws its power of approximately 100 hp from a 2-liter, straight eight engine. Its weight of 750 kg including the body is distributed perfectly across the axles (50 to 50 percent), giving the car incredible manoeuvrability. With its characteristic racing car body in tear-drop shape, this is a car that continues to capture the imagination right up to the present day. December 2013

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars CENTENARY ALPINE TRIAL AWARDED BEST RALLY OF THE YEAR Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has announced that the 2013 Centenary Alpine Trial, supported by the company earlier this year, has won ‘Best Rally or Tour of the Year’ at the prestigious International Historic Motoring Awards in London. On 14 June 2013, 47 vintage Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts departed from Vienna, wafting through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy before returning to Vienna on 29 June 2013 – exactly 100 years to the day since privateer entrant, James Radley, emphatically completed the original event, helping to cement the marque’s reputation for peerless reliability and mechanical excellence. The cars tackled 1,800 miles over some of the world’s most spectacular and challenging mountain passes. Echoing events a century ago, a Rolls-Royce Works Team took part in the trial. The original ‘James Radley’ 1913 Silver Ghost, was joined by a contemporary homage created by BeDecember 2013

spoke designers and craftspeople at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England. Finished in an exterior hue that takes inspiration from the Radley car, the 2013 Alpine Trial Centenary Ghost features exquisitely crafted Bespoke touches that elegantly tell the story of the 1913 Trial. The clock displays the stages of the rally and timings, whilst inlays to rear picnic tables and the front fascia express the topography and distances of the Alpine route. A hand-painted coachline referencing the four Rolls-Royce motor cars that took part in the 1913 Alpenfahrt and headlining, color-matched to the hood of Radley’s car, completes a beautiful tribute. “The Centenary Alpine Trial embraced the spirit of adventure that is synonymous with Rolls Royce, and this award is a wonderful conclusion to an extraordinary event,” said Andrew Ball, Corporate Communications Manager. “The 1913 Alpenfahrt led commentators to declare that Rolls-Royce built the ‘Best Car in the World’.

The 2013 Centenary Alpine Trial reinforced that message, and demonstrated that the Company continues to do so to this day.” The International Historic Motoring Awards are the most coveted awards in the classic car industry, showcasing excellence, rewarding innovation and providing the benchmark by which the world of historic cars judges itself. The ‘Best Rally or Tour of the Year 2013’ trophy was received by Nick Naismith and Tim Forrest of the 20 Ghost Club at the event. The 1913 Radley car and the 2013 Alpine Trial Centenary Ghost were reunited at the BMW Museum in Munich in November for the unique ‘Night of the White Gloves’, where visitors were issued with white gloves and invited to explore the cars close up. Both cars will remain on display until the New Year.

Zaid Al-Khaled, Fajhan Al Mutairi &

Taher Al Khateeb When did it all start for you guys and what are you trying to achieve? We have been working on the project for about a year and a half. We officially opened June 3rd, 2013. We wanted to make a tabletop gaming store that is on par with any of the best game stores worldwide. We not only want to carry every game worth carrying, but also have fully recognized tournaments with exclusive promo prizes. Basically, we wanted to deliver what we always wanted to have growing up, a place to hang out with friends and play games all night. As expected, we went through a rough learning experience starting our own small business. We had a lot of passion for our hobby, which definitely helped us overcome the realities of setbacks, delays, and things generally not working out at all as we had intended.

At Good Game, they are all about imagination and community, where like-minded people can get together for an afternoon of good gaming. Whether you want to lead an army of superhuman space soldiers, or sneak into a dragon’s den to steal her horde, you can always find people to share the experience with at Good Game. All of their games are stories waiting to be played. Whether you want to compete or cooperate, Good Game is the place for you. I got the chance to meet the guys behind this amazing concept store, and I know where I’ll be having fun most of my weekends, Hassan Al-Mosawi writes. What exactly is tabletop gaming? Tabletop gaming is a general term used to categorize all the games that you typically play on the table, on the floor or in person. The most recognizable things in this category are board games, but it also includes card games like Magic, miniature games like Warhammer and Role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons. Games you have to play with an actual human being next to you.

Good Game

Tell me a little bit about your history and how you guys became partners. When I (Zaid Al-Khaled) was 15, I found out about a group of gamers who would get together each week and play Dungeons and Dragons together. I couldn’t resist trying to join in and immediately started working all night on my character and convincing my other friends to join me too. After the first Dungeons and Dragons session, our whole group immediately clicked. I remember thinking that our groups had many different backgrounds and age differences, but none of that mattered. One of my partners, Fajhan Al Mutairi, used to be the Dungeon master in those sessions. My other partner, Taher Al Khateeb, also knew us from that time, and is a high-level chess player and part of the Kuwaiti National team. It was natural that we would work together on establishing Good Game. How did the idea for the store come about? We have been playing all manner of tabletop games for over half our lives. It didn’t take us long to realize that we were spending quite a bit of money as a group. We would pool our money together to get large discounts.

That lead us to think that we couldn’t possibly be the only people who love and care about these games. Finding a space to play and new people to play with was a constant issue. So we finally decided that we should become “that place”, where people play and meet each other. It was something that we should have thought of much earlier to be honest. We were probably too busy playing. How has the Kuwaiti market reacted to your store? It has been much better than we could have expected. It really feels like we were all little drops of water on a plate separated from each other. Now all those droplets are starting to meet and merge into a big community. It is very satisfying to witness, and even more fun to be a part of. What are some of the main obstacles you face owning such a concept store in Kuwait? A lot of what we are doing is new. A lot of what we sell is new to Kuwait too. So dealing with some of the bureaucratic measures in Kuwait is definitely the most challenging obstacle we have faced, and in some ways, are still facing. I imagine that it was like that for all the people doing something for the first time. Especially before people understand exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish. Where do you see tabletop gaming in 5 years’ time in Kuwait? I hope to see it become part of the entertainment culture of Kuwait. Kuwaitis are very social, if we indulge in stereotypes for a moment, then tabletop gaming gives us all one more reason to get together. Fajhan, Taher and I are all gamers and always have been. I love video games, but I will always choose to sit in front of a friend of mine and play a card game, or role-play for an entire afternoon, creating my own game that is not limited by anything but our own creativity. I would love it if tabletop gaming became one of the most popular ways for people to get their entertainment and escapist fix. What is the most popular product you have? That is a good question…and that has more than one answer. There are many different kinds of gamers. The casual or family gamers love Dixit because even your grandmother could play that and have fun. The hardcore players love Magic: The gathering, which I’ve been playing since 1993. And the pop culture savvy type like Game of Thrones, the board game. Who doesn’t want to backstab their best friend for a night?

Would you say tabletop gaming is becoming more commercial with time, or will remain as a niche hobby enjoyed by true enthusiasts? Tabletop gaming is currently experiencing a renaissance. Many companies are booming and new creative games are being made all the time. The quality of the games has never been better, which is great for us gamers, but I do think the commercialism will creep up. Many video games, movies, books and TV shows immediately get made into board games, and sometimes these products are good, like the star Wars based X-wing, and sometimes they are just cash in trash that clearly have no love or design put into it. What’s the next step for you guys? Hopefully we can grow into a bigger space and provide what we always envisioned for our community. A place you want to be at every week and unwind. We eventually want to have every game you could possibly want and every accessory you could possibly need. Our goal is to eventually do everything as good, or better than any tabletop game store anywhere in the world.

Adriana Lima Profile Famous as: Supermodel Birth Name: Adriana Francesca Lima Birth Date: June 12, 1981 Birth Place: Salvador, Bahia, Brazil Claim to Fame: Victoria’s Secret Summer 2000 Swimwear Catalogue model

Adriana Lima has been stamped with the “Sexiest Woman” label ever since she started modeling as a Victoria’s Secret Angel. The Brazilian bombshell is undeniably one of the most beautiful women in the world. The reach of Lima’s fame has extended even beyond Victoria’s Secret and their many campaigns, leading to her involvement in numerous modeling campaigns, runway appearances and acting projects that include designers like Armani and Versace. Alongside Gisele Bundchen and Marissa Miller, Adriana Lima has been ranked as one of the top five earnings models in the world.

Going back to Victoria’s Secret, her most iconic appearance on the runway was in 2008, when she wore a $5 million Fantasy Bra, which was made up of 1,500 carats of diamonds. In 2010, Lima wore a similar bra with a different label called, “Victoria’s Secret Bombshell Fantasy Bra”. The bra weighed in at 142 carats, 60 carats of white diamonds and 82 carats of topazes and sapphires. It is said to be worth 2 million dollars. The Brazilian beauty is also a multilingual model, knowing French, Portuguese, English, a bit of Italian and a pinch of Spanish. When she isn’t strutting down the runway or taking over magazine covers, Lima finds time to donate to the causes she believes in. She is an avid reader and supporter of the Ways of Light orphanage in her birthplace of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. In addition, she also participated in a local broadcast of Deal or no Deal to help Turkish children with leukemia.

Lima had also been famous for her love life, having remained a virgin until after marriage; she is definitely not your typical runway model. She experienced her first kiss at the age of 17 and refused to go further, and although she has dated a few men, none seemed to ever meet her expectations of a good husband, until one day, when Serbian former NBA player Marko Jaric whisked her off and they got married in 2009, two years after dating. The couple have two daughters together. One of Adriana’s famous covers was for GQ’s April 2006 cover, and was the magazine’s top-seller of the year. The magazine had named her, “The World’s Most Voluptuous Virgin.” Although she is married and that label has definitely been shattered, her captivating eyes and curvy figure make Lima one of the most beautiful of God’s creations. Other magazines and covers she appeared on were: Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, Arena, Vogue, V, and Esquire. She also appeared in the 2005 Pirelli Calendar and became the face of Italy’s cell phone carrier, Telecom Italia Mobile, a move that earned her the nickname, “the Catherine Zeta-Jones of Italy.” After winning one of Brazil’s biggest modeling competitions at age 15, being Ford’s “Supermodel of Brazil”, Lima didn’t quite stop there and went on to become second place at Ford’s “Supermodel of the World” competition. She had started modeling for Victoria’s Secret in 1999, and she was quickly upgraded to “Angel” status in 2001 when she received her wings. She has opened the show a total of five times and participated in promoting Victoria’s Secret nationwide in a tour called, “Angels Across America”. She was part of a five-angel team including Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen and Alessandra Ambrosio. She also made an appearance during Super Bowl commercials for BMW and Kia. Lima also has a variety of modeling contracts from Maybelline, Armani, and Givenchy. She is definitely one professional hottie. From runways to photo-shoots, Lima will continue to thrive.

Adrinan’s Advice to Men “Don’t try to be what you’re not. If you’re nervous, be nervous. If you’re shy, be shy. It’s cute” “I like jealous men. I love jealousy. I do.” ”A man needs to be polite, not just to me but to everyone. I watch that. How does he treat the waiter? How does he treat the coat-checker? How does he treat the driver?” “It’s wrong for a guy to have no personality, no heart. Because I don’t cause care about style or money.” December 2013

Scoring Big

The Hottest Wives and

Girlfriends of Athletes Whether these men are hitting golf balls, shooting hoops, scoring touchdowns, bending it like Beckham, or in the ice rink, one thing is for sure, they’ve all got insanely hot arm candy cheering them on from the stands. These women aren’t just your average girl either, they are all successful actresses and supermodels, which goes to show that jocks and athletes always have the hottest women on their side. So start picking up a sport and maybe one day you can score a model or two. Here’s our list of the hottest wives and girlfriends of athletes.

Vanessa Laine Bryant Amazingly, Vanessa Laine Bryant is neither an actress nor a supermodel. Vanessa and Kobe Bryant got married when she was just 17 years old. She may not be an actress or a supermodel, but she definitely still looks great.

Veronica Varekova

Abigail Clancy Abigail Clancy’s sumptuous curves have appeared in sizzling spreads in Maxim, FHM, Nuts, OK!, GQ, Sugar, Arena, The Sun, The Daily Star, and The Daily Mail. Admirers of her voluptuous body will be pleased to know that Abigail Clancy’s luscious wall calendar was made available in 2007. The drop-dead gorgeous lingerie model married her boyfriend of four years, footballer Peter Crouch in 2011. December 2013

Brooklyn Decker

A native of Olomouc, Czech Republic, Varekova is the wife of Petr Nedved, a former player of the NHL. She has been featured in the swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated magazine eight times, landing the coveted cover spot in 2004. She has modeled for Victoria’s Secret, Guess, Pantene and Chanel. She’s also been on the covers of magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire and Harpers & Queen.

It’s not very often that a guy goes out of his way to beg a girl to go out on a date with him, but in the case of tennis star Andy Roddick and model Brooklyn Decker, that is exactly what happened. The two were first introduced when he saw a picture of her in the pages of Sports Illustrated. He must have really liked what he saw, which resulted in his perusal to get her to go on a date with him. The two then tied the knot in 2009. Jessie James Broncos’ wide-out Eric Decker is currently engaged to the dazzling country singer Jessie James. He has become quickly one of the league’s best pass catchers and now has one of the hottest country signers by his side.

But that’s girl talk, on to more important things, you might know her from the 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She was also seen recently strutting down the runway during the 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Is She The One? Girls always talk about the feeling they get when they meet “THE ONE”. Guys on the other hand, don’t really share their feelings with one another. But there are some scientific studies that have shown the signs and qualities in a woman that men will flag during a relationship, which will make them realize she is the one. So what are the signs and qualities that help you determine if she is the one? Read on to find out, Iman Abuasba writes. 1. Do you feel like your life is better when she is around?

Does she make you want to be a better person, push you to reach your goals, help you organize your thoughts and weigh out the important things in life? She has your back and you’ll feel supported by her. Things will start to fall into place with her in your life, and just knowing that she is there offers you this sort of comfort, because you know she will always give you honest feedback with your best interest in mind. 2. Is she a charmer?

Not in a bad way, but you’re smitten by her charm and your friends and family see the charm in her as well. It’s nice to know that she can get along with the people in your life and they look at her the same way you look at her. She makes you laugh and you two have the same sense of humor. She laughs at your jokes and you laugh at hers. You can act silly together and tease one another, but you can also have serious moments, which is very important. 3. Is she motivated?

Does she have a life of her own, a successful career, future goals and objectives that she is determined to reach? That means she is someone you can depend and rely on to get things done. And if you two are on the same page as far as what you want in life, that’s even better. Timing is everything and if you can talk about the more serious side of your future together, and ask “deal-breaker” questions (for example, kids, traveling, living locations), you’ll find out you might have more in common, which is always better. 4. Do you get a little jealous?

You trust her, but there is always this kind of jealousy, which isn’t a bad thing. It is important to be a tad bit jealous, all within limits and not too extreme of course, because it shows that you actually do care about her. Face it, she is a beautiful woman, has a great character and personality, so men will desire her. That doesn’t mean she is going to cheat on you with every guy hitting on her, but it’ll feel good to know that your girlfriend is hot and at the end of the day, she is going home with you. 5. Does she make you feel like a man?

Being an independent woman is very important and you don’t want someone who relies on you 100 percent, that is a lot of weight to carry on your shoulders. But does your chemistry and desire for one another make you feel like you want to be her knight in shining armor? If she tells you she feels safe with you and better when you’re around, you know she turns to you as her main man.

Men Don’t

Leg Day

Most of the time men’s workouts target the upper body muscles (biceps, triceps, chest and abs). Focusing on the upper body while ignoring your lower half will result in a disproportioned body image. Basically, you’ll end up looking like Johnny Bravo with chicken legs. So, next time you hit the gym, make sure to incorporate any of the following leg exercises. You’ll burn more calories and boost your metabolism as you get your heart pumping during these leg workouts. Let me just state that after my trainer makes me go through any of these exercises, my legs feel like jelly, so, you’ve been warned, Iman Abuasba writes.

Leg Challenge #1

Leg Challenge #5

This exercise relates to the FITT principal. FITT stands for Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type. The circuit involves squats, burpees and shuttle sprints.

This is a split squat, but with a twist. Instead of performing the split squat the regular way, this exercise requires your front leg to do most of the work and holding a dumbbell in one hand will increase the difficulty in your balance.

Circuit 1: 20 air squats Circuit 2: 20 burpees Circuit 3: sprint to 9 meters up and back, then sprint 18 meters up and back, then sprint 27 meters up and back Time yourself while you perform this circuit so you can compare your results the next time you perform the circuit. Leg Challenge #2 This exercise includes two very familiar exercises, pushups and squats. However, again, this workout involves performing them at a fast pace and at a three-minute time limit. Set your timer and do the following:

#5

Grab your dumbbell, place the top of your back foot on top of the bench, keep your front leg in the center, and hold the weight on the side where your front leg is on the floor. Stay tall up top as you lower down as far as you can because your back leg is elevated. Power through the hip and heel, then control down again. Do as many as you can on one side, then switch legs and perform the same count.

#1 #2

Perform 3 squats as fast as possible and then immediately jump into performing 3 pushups. Get up, and perform 6 squats, again, followed immediately by 6 pushups. Continue to add one squat and one pushup per round until your three-minute timer goes off. Keep count of how many rounds you can complete so you can compare your results the next time you perform this exercise. Leg Challenge #3 This exercise involves performing a walking lunge, however by adding dumbbells and holding the weight above your head, will work every muscle in your body. It targets the muscles in your arms, shoulders, upper back, and core. Start in standing position, legs straight while holding the dumbbells above your head. Then step into a lunge, keeping the dumbbells above your head the whole time, keep stepping into a lunge and do it as far as you can and as fast as you can.

#3

Leg Challenge #4 This exercise involves performing a single leg squat, which is one of the most difficult moves to perform. It challenges your strength, flexibility and balance.

#4

Get a nice wide stance as your starting position; hold a light medicine ball in front of your body to help with counter balance, so you can get into a deep position. Sit your hips back and down to one side, keep your foot flat on the floor, and go as low as you can to ideally where your hamstring is back on your calf. Try not to shrug your shoulders, keep your shoulders down. Pause for a count, push back up into starting position, and then switch to the other side.

Body & Soul

Drink More Water.

And then Drink

Some More.

This month is about the facts! We have been bringing you advice and hopefully life changing material, but its time to expand on what we have been preaching with some facts and more detail. Knowledge is the best motivator, the more you know, the more you do. So let’ s give you all the top reasons to follow some of the basic advice we have been giving. A reoccurring theme in this segment of the magazine has been hydration, the importance of drinking water and consuming water rich foods. Here are some bullet points to get all the benefits in one place for a more convincing argument, Hassan Al-Mosawi writes.

•Improve your mood; dehydration is a severe condition, which your body takes very seriously. Imagine that your whole nervous system is receiving signals that there is not enough water for your survival. This affects all your nerves and puts you in a critical survival mode, which to the naked eye, is only seen as being grumpy. So keep yourself hydrated for calmer nerves and overall happiness. •Be a top physical performer. Our muscle tissue is made up of more than 70% water. It is necessary for all organs of the body, and lack of water means your body is not fueled or oiled as necessary. This mean less overall energy and less functionality within your body. Symptoms of dehydration also include weakness, dizziness and major fatigue. •Improve your mental performance. Our brain uses electricity as a main source of communication within itself. Signals being shot back and forth a million times per second. Drinking water moistens the brain, as we all learned from science class; water is a great conductor of electricity. This means that the lack of hydration in the brain means less effective communication, which results in less efficient brain performance and focus. By keeping hydrated you can have easier access to memories, enjoy having more focus, and overall have a sharper mind. •Reduce cancer. Research shows that by keeping hydrated, one can reduce chances of developing cancer significantly. Part of the conditions necessary for cancer to thrive is the lack of moisture, in other words, a dehydrated body would be the perfect accommodation. Also, as mentioned earlier, since water effects performance and functionality of all your internal organs, it is important to keep them running in order to avoid any failures or weakness. •Lose some of those extra pounds. We have an alarm system within our bodies that help us know when we are hungry. These signals can be confusing, we often mistake the cry out from our body for hydration as hunger, and end up eating when all that was needed was a glass or two of water. Water in this case can act as an appetite suppressant, and can help you distinguish thirst from true hunger, helping you shed some unnecessary weight. •Enjoy a life free of joint pain. Our joints depend on moisture or more specifically, water for their functionality. Glucosamine is usually given to patients with joint pains. The main role of glucosamine is not to relieve aches, but to aid the joints in absorbing water. So prevent the need from an early stage by keeping yourself and your joints well hydrated. •Avoid unnecessary headaches. It seems more and more apparent, that people in the workplace are popping Panadols more than ever. We may think our headaches are a natural side effect of waking up early and working long hours. Far from it, if headaches were a result of hard work or over thinking, we as a society have more problems than we think! The truth is most of the time we are simply dehydrated, we need so badly to wake up that we resort to coffee and food

December 2013

for energy, and we neglect our need for water. Next time you feel a headache coming along, try having a few glasses of water throughout the day and you’ll start to witness levels of pain relief. •We are in the middle of a detox epidemic, with companies spurring from every corner with different detox programs. Many of my friends, yes and myself, feel that with all the different unhealthy foods we consume, we need to detox every now and again. But why wait? Drinking water is the best way to detox, and that can be done daily without any major commitments or changes in your diet. Water helps flush out waste and bacteria. Our body uses sweat and urine to get rid of waste from our body. But without sufficient intake of water, this process cannot be effective as there is less urine and sweat. The lack of water therefore can result into a build up of waste in our body, which in itself is the start of many other problems. •Enjoy a natural glow. Water is responsible for the nourishment of the skin, which as you may know is the largest organ of the human body. It aids the cells to rejuvenate and build new cells. This process will keep your skin’s color and texture, which results in a face looking energized and refreshed. Water also helps the skin in its sweating process, which is necessary to regulate the internal temperature of the body that keeps the entire organs safe and functioning properly. •Feed your entire body. Wait what does that mean? Well we know that our body needs nutrients, and those nutrients are absorbed from the different foods we eat. But in order for all those necessary building blocks of our health to be properly consumed, they need to be distributed within the body and then circulated. Without water, our absorption is limited as dehydration slows down blood flow and circulation. You can imagine what a waste it is to eat healthy and clean, but not have the proper delivery system for all the nutrients you are consuming.

NIVEA MEN SHAVE WITH ANY BLADE BUT

CHOOSE THE BEST SHAVING GEL If you think a first impression is everything, you’re probably right. But what’s also important is to keep the first impression going. Helping you put your best self forward with NIVEA MEN, the global leader in men skin care re-introduces its men range in a fresh look giving men the right tools to look good and feel great everyday. Men‘s faces go through a lot during the day; men are expected to shave about 20,000 times in their life, so preparation for the skin right before each go is crucial to helping perfect your grooming experience and to have an irritation-free shave. When you shave, the blade passes down the surface of the skin; the outermost layer of the skin is removed along with the hair. By removing this protective barrier, skin becomes dehydrated and the blade can also cause invisible micro cuts, which can lead to irritations. NIVEA MEN shaving gels contain vitamin E and moisturizers to help prevent moisture loss and keep skin looking healthy. The Ultra glide Technology ™, improves razor glide and helps protect against micro cuts, shave irritations, and provides a close and extra comfortable shave. Common shaving problems such as razor burns, cuts and ingrown hair ,can be prevented if you choose the right shaving gel, or foam that will keep your skin hydrated and lubricated enough NIVEA MEN knows men’s care best, here are some essential grooming 101 tips:

2. SHAVING: Foam, cream, or gel. What you choose as your main shaving product is your personal preference. To get a close shave, pull a patch of skin tight with one hand and, in one controlled movement, sweep the blade across the area, following the direction of the hair growth. Don’t use small, jerky movements or continually scrape away at the same patch. This will only cause more irritation. If the shave isn’t close enough, re-lather the area and go over it again. This time you can go against the grain if you absolutely have to.

3. POST SHAVE CARE: Shaving is pretty hard on the skin, which makes the aftercare just as important as the prep. A lot of guys still use a high concentrate alcohol-based after-shave or cologne when they’re done. This is the worst thing you can do because the high alcohol in these products dehydrates skin, and may increase the chance of post-shave problems.

1. CLEANSING: Barbershop-style hot towels are great for priming your beard, but they’re not practical at home. A hot shower will have a similar effect, opening pores and helping soften the beard.

To make it easier to shave, clean the surface of your skin with NIVEA MEN Originals Refreshing Face Wash, which will help in reducing the likelihood of razor drag and a bad shave.

December 2013

After splashing your face with cold water to help close pores, reach for a soothing after-shave product. NIVEA MEN After Shave Balms or NIVEA MEN Face moisturizers immediately soothes discomfort after shaving and actively holds moisture in the skin against drying out.

Introducing

GUESS Night a New Fragrance for Men GUESS, the American lifestyle brand famous for its trend setting denim and unforgettable campaigns, introduces GUESS Night, a seductively masculine and magnetic men’s fragrance. Playfully spicy and woody, GUESS Night is bursting with heady, energetic notes to keep you going until the sun comes up. Developed by renowned perfumers Antoine Lie and Francis Kurkdjian, GUESS Night’s fresh, invigorating scent is dominated by the masculine aroma of woody fougere. Passionate flairs of hot pepper, zesty notes of grapefruit, and the sensual essence of vetiver compliment the core aroma for a long-lasting cologne that’s sure to get you noticed. Modern and sleek, the fragrance’s packaging is as eye-catching and alluring as the scent itself. The glass bottle is 360° faceted creating constant reflection of light. The electric blue edging detail and collar are reminiscent of pulsing night club lights. “GUESS Night takes luxurious, historic ingredients, such as geranium and patchouli, and wraps them with something sweet and juicy,” says perfumer Antoine Lie, who created the scent with fellow perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. “It’s classic, but with a modern twist.” Guided by the creative direction of Paul Marciano, CEO and Creative Director at Guess?, Inc, and shot by Mikael Jansson, the GUESS Night advertising campaign is set in a high-energy club in downtown NYC. It features a young, seductive GUESS man, Goncalo Teixeira, full of confidence as the DJ spins the latest hits. In the background, GUESS girl Sandrah Hellberg dances to the music while enticing him to come closer. “I have always been passionate about music and the way it connects the GUESS brand with our audience,” said Paul Marciano, “The electric energy of EDM inspired the creation of GUESS Night; a scent that will be the first thing the GUESS man puts on before going out to make him feel confident.” RAW had the chance to interview the male model and face of GUESS Night, Goncalo Teixeira, to talk about the new fragrance, what the fragrance means to him, and the role he plays as the face of GUESS Night. Goncalo Teixeira embodies the promise of the Lusitanian male image. Increasingly mediated, Goncalo wants to transpose the current fashion paradigm and allow people to get to know the personality behind his sincere and intense look. More than embodying some of today’s most famous brands (Emporio Armani, Guess, John Richmond, Cesari Pascioiti), Goncalo Teixeira is an active ambassador of social causes such as various cares for the elderly. A very active sportsman, he works thoroughly in breaking boundaries in a constant attempt to surpass himself. Proud adept of Hatha Yoga, Goncalo appreciates the balance between self-awareness and physical well-being. December 2013

What do you like about the fragrance GUESS Night? What does it evoke for you? GUESS Night is a strong, masculine fragrance. It makes me feel confident when I wear it. Describe the GUESS Night man. What is he like? GUESS Night is a strong, spicy perfume, which is just the way I like it. So far, everyone that I know that has tried it loves it. How do you feel representing such a brand and being the face of GUESS Night? I feel really happy and proud of being the face. It’s exciting. How did you feel shooting the advertising campaign? Have you ever worked with Mikael Jansson before? What was it like to work with him? It was my first time working with him and we had a great time. You can see the final result… it was amazing. What does the tagline “Own the Night,” mean to you? To me it means that whenever I go out, I should enjoy it as much as possible and make it my own. 1 1 Burberry Brit Rhythm

2

An iconic fragrance. Seductive and provocative, Brit Rhythm is inspired by the exhilaration and adrenaline of live music and the electric energy of the crowd. The scent mixes electric notes of fresh basil verveina, spicy cardamom, and a shot of juniper berries with black leather, patchouli, and cedarwood.

2 Clean

White Woods CLEAN White Woods is a warm, luxurious scent that embodies the pure essence of natural light dancing along a quiet wooded path. The fragrance weaves a cozy, comforting blanket with hints of crisp bergamot leaves, sparkling mandarin, creamy vanilla orchid, sandalwood, praline musks, and a dash of black pepper.

3 Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male “Sailor Boy”

4

The brave sailor starts a new adventure. Rediscover ‘LE MALE’ in its’ iconic sailor style with a Limited Edition Eau de Toilette Spray bottle. Since Jean Paul Gaultier’s first men’s collection, he has shown men that they can indulge in the forbidden, and that a kilt or dress can be worn with virility— a reminder that nothing in life is totally black or white, but always a blend. Mint, lavender and vanilla blend to create a fragrance that is fresh and tender, strong and virile: the essence of modern masculinity.

4 Angel Schlesser Absolute Oriental

3

The fragrance’s top note starts with the characteristic and citrus touch of Mediterranean bergamot. Next, fragrant freesia, together with the energetic and precious Osmanthus flower, the flower of sensuality, provides intensity, seduction and mystery. The fragrance’s bottom note holds the purity of its Oriental style: the strong oud envelopes the warm vanilla and the exotic patchouli, and embraces the sensual aroma of musk and Oriental hints of sandalwood, while the vetiver freshens the fragrance adding a light, green feel.

The Fragrance Olfactive Family Fougère-Aromatic. Decidedly masculine. The essence of a great man. The virile freshness of sage blends into orange blossom and the aromatic notes to create a unique, charismatic identity. A blend of musks, amber, moss and tonka bean fill the perfume with sensuality and leave a prevailing trail. Created by: Alienor Massenet and Pierre Wargnye. Describing the fragrance and her take on the TOUS man, RAW got a one-on-one with one of the perfumers behind it all, Alienor Massenet. What is the secret to making a classic fragrance? To make a classic fragrance, it’s important to create a symbiosis between the name, the brand, the packaging and the scent. When all these elements are coherent, it’s easier to understand, and your belief in it becomes stronger. What sources of inspiration did you use as you created the scent? Orange flower is too often associated with femininity. My inspiration for this fragrance was to create a masculine interpretation of orange flower. The IFF captive amber® fulfils the role in masculinizing the orange flower, to make a unique trail, full of modernity. What can you tell us about the fragrance notes? What do they each represent? The fragrance soul of TOUS Man Intense is defined by the sage, present in its top with the LMR sage essence and in its heart with the LMR sage absolute. This aromatic side is reinforced by the moss accord. Hints of tonka beans warm the fragrance with its sweetness. To bring lightness and subtlety to the trail, I used all the facets of orange tree (Petit grain, Neroli, Orange Flower). Globally, this fragrance has a structure of a classic fougere, but is unique thanks to the modernization with the IFF captive amber® which brings complexity and verticality. What was it like to collaborate with Pierre Wargnye on this fragrance? Did you face any challenges? My collaboration with Pierre Wargnye was great. It’s always a pleasure to work with him, considering the fact than he has always been a mentor for me in IFF. Pierre has an incredible experience in Fine Fragrances and especially in masculine creations. How long did it take to create the fragrance? The creation process of the fragrance took 9 months. What does the TOUS brand represent to you? For me, TOUS brand is a joyful brand, young, fun and easy going. The teddy bear logo is a good illustration of these values. How would you define the man who wears TOUS Man Intense? This fragrance is dedicated to a virile man, powerful and reassuring. He is both classic and modern, seductive and clean, strong and sensitive. Communication visual. A look, a gesture, the way he walks, an attitude. He is distinguished and charismatic. The visual shows a self-confident man who opts for a distinguished image. The photographer Daniel Riera has perfectly blended the attractiveness of David Miller, the South African model, and the elegance of TOUS MAN INTENSE.

William Leith / The Times Magazine / The Interview People

The basketball player Dennis Rodman’s life has been a tabloid pageant of hotels, booze, adult entertainers and celebrity girlfriends. Now, he tells William Leith, it’s taken a new turn – by way of an unlikely friendship with Kim Jong Un, and a bizarre bid to broker peace with North Korea. On the surface, the former basketball player Dennis Rodman seems easy to grasp. He’s a 6ft 8in black guy, with dyed blond hair, pierced nostrils, a pierced lip, and around 100 tattoos, the largest of which is, as he puts it, “a spread-eagled beauty pleasuring herself”. He is, in his own words, “America’s No 1 bada**”. So: he’s big, brash, edgy and erotic. He says he’s slept with 2,000 women – including Madonna, whom he tried to impregnate. His lived life has been a rolling tabloid pageant – hotels, nightclubs, booze, brawls, cops, motorbikes, doctors, rehab, hundreds upon hundreds of adult entertainers, more hotels – and, recently, increasingly extreme PR stunts. I’m meeting him to talk about his latest, a strange concoction that involves Rodman, an Irish bookmaker, and a Third World dictator. The bookmaker is Paddy Power. The dictator is Kim Jong Un, the Supreme Leader of North Korea, the Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army, and the Marshal of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Rodman, who likes Kim, refers to him simply as “the Marshal”. Or “this young kid”.

Dennis Rodman with my fist. “Let’s just talk,” he says. “How’s everything going? Let’s just talk – come on!” Rodman laughs in a way that might or might not be sinister. “It’s up to you to play the game,” he says. I’m nodding slowly. He says: “Simple s***.” I can see that, eventually, I just might get his attention. But this is classic Rodman – even he has admitted he is always trying to distance himself from people. It’s on account of his childhood – he grew up shockingly poor in the housing projects of Dallas. His father, who is actually called Philander, was a terrible philanderer and disappeared when Rodman was tiny. His mother had to work so hard, scrabbling from job to job, that she didn’t have much time for intimacy. In any case, he has said, she preferred his sisters. As a kid, he could not command enough attention from the females in his family; as an adult, he went through a phase of wearing dresses in public. As a teenager, he thought he might be homosexual. You don’t have to be Freud here, do you?

As a player, Rodman was a member of the famous Chicago Bulls team of the Nineties – he played alongside Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. A “power forward” with a strong defense, he was good at stopping the opposition. In football terms, he was more of a Rio Ferdinand than a Wayne Rooney. What Rodman realized, about halfway through his career, was the importance of image. He styled himself as a rebel – and an on-court hard guy. He dyed his hair. He tatted up. Pierced his nostrils and nipples. Head-butted a referee. And the media lapped him up – he drew big TV audiences, in the way John McEnroe had for tennis. Sponsors – and adult entertainers – threw themselves at Rodman. He partied hard. Now he’s retired, he’s still partying hard.

Much later, after he famously had a brawl with Carmen Electra, his wife at the time, he said it was because she tried to insert something somewhere no man would accept. Rodman went wild. The police were called. “That part of a man is his castle,” he explained later. Another thing, concerning intimacy, is that Rodman is incapable of committing to just one woman. He usually has a main woman, whom he refers to as “the mothership”, and several satellites, whom he calls “life rafts”.

So I’ll have to tread carefully. He’s a textbook case of a man with a huge, but also fragile, ego. So I ask him about this latest project – a basketball game, between a Rodman-selected team and the North Korean national side, to be played in Pyongyang on January 8, which is Kim Jong Un’s 31st birthday. I speak to the marketing spokesman for Paddy Power, the bookmaking company that is promoting the event – he’s actually called Paddy Power – and he refers to it as “basketball diplomacy”. It sounds crazy. But it might just be brilliant. As Power says, here’s this huge, pierced, tattooed black dude, and he’ll be hanging out with the leader of a country that, to say the least, does not celebrate diversity. Rodman explains: “It’s like saying, if I went to South Africa, to a village... I’d be going because the people need money. It’s the same thing with North Korea. They need money. I’m not doing it for the money. I’m doing it to open a gap between North Korea and the world. And North Korea has a lot of things to offer. They want to branch out.” He bites on his cigar. Takes a puff. “I’m not saying that the Marshal of North Korea is in control. It’s the system that’s been built for years and years and years. And this young kid is trying to do one thing – to open that gap. To do something to make it work.” He goes on: “It’s amazing how people say how dangerous North Korea is, and how poverty is really eatin’ the country up because of the Mar-

I’ve made it clear that I want to interview Rodman, 52, somewhere quiet, and he’s agreed to see me in his hotel suite in Central London. But there’s a last-minute change of plan – he’s in a place called Humidor, just about the only public establishment in London where you’re allowed to smoke. Rodman, of course, smokes. He likes big cigars. When I arrive, he’s sitting in a small, smoke-filled room, talking expansively to the room in general. He has a bodyguard, who is much smaller than him. He’s hiding behind huge sunglasses, a baseball cap and a cloud of acrid smoke. He’s wearing tracksuit bottoms and Crocs (size 15). Up close, I can see, Rodman is not quite so easy to grasp. At first, his demeanor is odd, verging on mildly hostile. It’s like having an audience with a gang boss. He says: “What’s your name – Larry?” No, I say. I introduce myself and offer a handshake. He offers a fist. A huge fist. So I bump his fist December 2013

Cover Story na and Cardinal Arinze of Nigeria were in the running for the Papacy. Scott had an idea: if you bet on any candidate, and one of the cardinals became Pope, you’d get your money back. He also came up with a slogan: “Get your money back if the Pope’s black.”

shal. I’ll just say this in favor of the Marshal. If you sit back and look at China, Japan, Tokyo and Hong Kong, it’s amazing how we, as Americans, and the BK – the UK here – most of the products are made in Asia. Over there. And they slave for 20 hours a day to make what? Fifty cents an hour? I don’t hear s*** like that! Really! Guess what? We’re selling shoes! And the richest countries around the world – China, Tokyo, Japan...” At some point, Rodman’s precise argument bypasses me. But, as his rant becomes more effusive, I pick up his gist. It is, I think: North Korea might be bad, but lots of other places, places that make our shoes, are bad, too. Also, it’s not all the Marshal’s fault. The repressive system is not something he built – it’s something he inherited. “Remember that recession s***?” says Rodman, waving his cigar. “Well, no one knows that s***!” It suddenly occurs to me that the reason he calls the UK “the BK” might be because of the American sneaker brand British Knights. Opening his arms, he encompasses China in his argument: “Instead of having ten motherf***ing kids, it’s only three! No more than three now! After that, it’s a b****! And no one knows that s***! You can’t have kids no more!” I nod. Point taken. Sort of. He returns to the subject of the Marshal. “As I say, the guy – he’s a good guy. He’s a good-hearted kid.” How did this all come about? Rory Scott, who works for Paddy Power as a publicity fixer, explained it to me. In February, when the Pope resigned, Paddy Power ran a book on the Papal succession. Scott and Power went to Rome to publicize the idea. Cardinal Turkson from GhaDecember 2013

So there they were, the Irish bookie and his publicist, rattling around Rome, trying to get people to bet on who the new Pope would be. Reading a newspaper one day, Scott saw a picture of Dennis Rodman meeting Kim Jong Un, the Supreme Commander of North Korea. Rodman had been invited by Shane Smith, a documentary-maker connected to the Vice media group, who had arranged a basketball exhibition in North Korea. One evening, there was a knock at Rodman’s door. Several officials had been ordered to bring him to the Supreme Leader’s palace. He thought he was being arrested. But he wasn’t – he was being given an audience with Kim Jong Un, who is a massive basketball fan; when he was a student, in Geneva, he loved the Chicago Bulls. You can just see it: lonely student, funny haircut, no experience of the West, sitting there, watching Rodman’s antics. Loving the tatts, the piercings, the implication of intimacy and rebellion. He invited Rodman back to spend a few days on his private island. “It’s like Hawaii or Ibiza, but he’s the only one that lives there,” said Rodman recently. That is, aside from the “50 or 60 people around him all the time – just normal people, drinking cocktails and laughing the whole time”. Kim’s booze is top quality: “Everything he has is the best.’” The way Rodman explains it to me is: “I don’t care what the f*** he does over there, what he does over here – between me and him, we’re friends. I don’t care.” Anyway, Scott thought Rodman would be a great frontman for the “Money back if the Pope’s black” campaign. Rodman agreed. He flew to Rome. Sitting in a restaurant one night, Scott, Power and Rodman came up with an idea. A basketball match! In North Korea! On the Marshal’s 31st birthday! Rodman takes his cigar out of his mouth. “If it works – great!” We look at each other. “It will work,” he says. “It will work. Just watch. Twenty-four months from now. The door will open – a crack. It took a jerk like me to do it. On January 8, I will be the most famous guy in the darn world – without even trying.” Rodman has sometimes described the doubleedged sword of fame. We talk about how, somewhere inside, there exists a guy called Dennis Rodman, who grew up poor, fatherless and hopeless in Dallas, who was “a narcotic dealer and a thief”. He says: “I don’t try to overanalyze, to relive it. If I did, guess what? We do have emotional trigger points. You do cry alone sometimes. You do cry alone.” But then, every morning, he puts on his shades

and his baseball cap, and becomes a different person – “Dennis Rodman”, the persona he created with the help of the media. The party animal who never stops. The guy who drinks, sometimes for days on end. The guy with a protective carapace of adult entertainers and Bunny Girls, a moveable entourage that protects him from everything, even his girlfriends. He once had a bender that involved a motorcycle accident; he went to hospital, had his leg stitched up, then went back to a adult entertainment club. The bender continued. “Always do one thing – go forward,” he says. Where does he live now? “Hotels,” he says. We talk about his father, who has moved to the Philippines, and whom Rodman contacted and visited a few years ago. “He had 15 kids living with him. I don’t see him as my father. I see him as... my friend. I’ve done all my crying. If I had my father back then, I wouldn’t be here now.” You can see why Dennis Rodman mostly prefers to be “Dennis Rodman” – it’s a way of avoiding psychological pain, mostly with women. For Rodman, intimacy is the hardest thing. He has often said he refuses to remain faithful to one woman. That way, he’s never alone. And his relationships don’t last long, because nobody likes being cheated on. Or, as Rodman has put it, “There’s always fine print.” “Life doesn’t play fair, man,” he tells me. “Pick a woman. What’s the chance she’s going to be with you forever? If you googled divorce rates today, it’s insane! Go anyplace. And watch women. Watch ’em. If you look at women, you see one thing. They’re not trying to impress men. They’re trying to impress who? Other women.”

RAW

Dennis Rodman Still, sometimes he falls in love. One of his great romances was with the actress and model Carmen Electra. “I don’t know how many hotel rooms we destroyed having intercourse. Anybody who heard it must have thought we were fighting, or trying to kill each other,” he wrote in his autobiography I Should Be Dead By Now. One day, after a long bender, Rodman and Electra decided to get married. But Rodman’s handlers – his agent, his manager, and his lawyer – didn’t like the idea. They wanted the bride-to-be to sign a prenuptial agreement. Rodman and Electra drove to the airport, having arranged a private flight to Vegas. Rodman’s manager wouldn’t let them get on the plane. He threatened to “blow a hole in the engine”. Then the pilot refused to fly. So Rodman ordered his manager to drive them to Vegas. The three got in Rodman’s Bentley. The couple passed out in the back. Rodman’s manager drove him home. “We wanted to get married so badly,” wrote Rodman. In the end, they did – but annulment papers were filed nine days later. Electra did not appreciate being cheated on. “She couldn’t tame the wild man,” Rodman wrote, “and neither could I.” I then ask him about his six-month fling with Madonna. “I told her, ‘I don’t like your music. It sucks. It’s bubblegum.’ ” But she’s an “awesome person”. He’s very enthusiastic about intercourse – so much so that he’s “broken his private parts” three times. Three times, I say. I mean, once sounds bad enough. He says, “You know that Lionel Richie song?” He starts to sing Three Times a Lady. Then he laughs, hard. He’s not a reformed character. He still drinks, still parties. “I’m still doing my thing. It’s up to me to stop. I don’t do pills or nothin’.” He says he doesn’t want any more children. Says he knows he’s been a bad father to his three children: Alexis, Dennis Jr and Trinity, aged 25, 13 and 12. Says he made a point of explaining himself in the speech he made upon being in-

ducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. “I said how bad I am. How bad I was. My kids were right in front of me.” For a moment, he brightens. He has an idea: “We could go to Stringfellows. Get our s*** together. I guarantee you it’s open.” But it’s midafternoon and Stringfellows is closed. Some girls walk past the window. He says he’ll give me “30 quid” to have intercourse with one of them. “If she likes it.” We laugh. He is being “Dennis Rodman”. He says, “I’m pretty much balanced. You have to understand why you’re living. Because it’s coming.” He’s talking about death. “Eventually, you’re going to go there.” We look at each other for a while. I can’t see his eyes. I haven’t seen his eyes once. He’s getting ready to party. Tonight: the Playboy Club in Mayfair, where he will be photographed with Bunny Girls. Soon: basketball in Pyongyang. What’s his ambition in life? “To make life the way I want it to be before I die.” Rodman stands, revealing his full height. Of course, he’s very, very tall – but, in NBA terms, not by any means the tallest. “You’ve gotta shower with these guys – you’ve gotta look at their private parts, right?” he says. He laughs, in a way that may or may not be sinister. “I’m not homosexual,” he says. Walking with Rodman, from the cigar bar to the hotel, I wonder what the future holds for him. One imagines years of reality TV shows – Celebrity Big Brother and Celebrity Apprentice maybe, or a show based on his life, or maybe a supporting role in a cheesy action movie alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme, followed by a sad performance on Celebrity Rehab. The thing is, he’s already done all these things. On Celebrity Apprentice, his family, friends and handlers staged a rehab intervention to deal with his drinking. When he made Double Team with Van Damme, his performance was panned.

On the night Celebrity Rehab aired, he was “ejected from an Orange County, California, restaurant for disruptive behavior”. Looked at in this light, a warm relationship with Kim Jong Un looks logical – perhaps even necessary. When we enter the Soho Hotel, his home for the moment, he looks around, spots two blondes at a corner table, walks across the room and sits with them. One day, perhaps, he will learn to live life as himself. But for now, aged 52, he is still eager to party, still moving forward, still looking for ways to spend one more day as “Dennis Rodman”. The Paddy Power Dennis Rodman Invitational takes place in North Korea in January 2014. December 2013

As a chill descends, the Hungarian capital – with its historic grand cafes, ornate baths and festive markets – really comes to life. With art nouveau splendors lining a curve of the Danube, Budapest promises genteel romance. While the fin–de–siècle façades, old–fashioned cafés and refined baths politely sweep you off your feet, the traces of Goulash communism and the city’s fascinating modern history add spice. Budapest is an easy city to navigate, with the river at its heart. Cross a bridge to the west and you’re in Buda, the leafy hills hiding natural hot springs and crowned with a palace that provide views down to the scene–stealing gothic parliament building on the far riverbank. Behind this is Pest, the eastern city, unified with Buda in 1873, where you’ll find attractive boulevards and the quarter, which has seen a bohemian drinking scene developed around dilapidated courtyards beautified with eclectic art and flea market furniture. The city remains affordable, with the more desirable hotels and restaurants attainable on most budgets. Its celebrated Christmas market opens in Vörösmarty Square. Warm your cockles with a beverage while browsing the stalls for gifts and traditional Hungarian fare. December November 2013 2013

The Breguet Museum and its President, Marc A. Hayek, have acquired 3 exceptional Breguet watches that made their mark on Fine Watchmaking history, for a price of nearly 1.5 million Swiss francs. Among the purchased lots, an extremely rare, highly complicated pocket watch, the Breguet no°4691. Bought at Christie’s and Sotheby’s auctions in Geneva, these masterpieces complete the already important collection of the House. Sold on July 3, 1833 to the Marquis d’Abercorn, the first watch, no°5015 went for the price of 38’000 Swiss francs. This pocket watch is one of the very first watches ever made by any watchmaker featuring a keyless stem winding and hour setting system. Created in 1830, this invention is the ancestor of all modern winding mechanisms, consisted of a knurled winding button to be turned from left to right until a stop was reached. Covering three Breguet generations, starting with the founder of the brand Abraham-Louis and his contribution to the development of the keyless winding and hour setting mechanism, his son Antoine-Louis, who perfected and commercialized it and lastly, the latter’s son, Louis-Clément, who sold it only 6 weeks after he had taken up the reins of the firm again, the no°5015 is an important witness of the work and legacy of the House of Breguet. The second antique piece, well-known as the no°4420 is an historically important 18K gold and silver hunter case cylinder watch. With eccentric hour and minute dials, gold Breguet hands and surmounted by the advance/retard slide, it was purchased for more than 240’000 Swiss francs. This pocket watch was bought on October 3, 1825 by King George IV of Great Britain. Like his father, King George IV was an aficionado of fine watches and clocks and one of A.-L. Breguet’s earliest clients, admirers and most loyal customers. With this acquisition the House took the exceptionally scarce opportunity to acquire one of the Breguet’s “Royal” watches. Last but not the least, the third watch is an extremely rare extra-flat half-quarter repeating pocket watch. Sold on October 13, 1831 to Lord Henry Seymour Conway, the n°4691 is one of the most complicated

Pulse For this year’s 34th America’s Cup, now entering its exciting final weekend, the R&D departments of TAG Heuer and ORACLE TEAM USA, co-invented onboard connectivity equipment and an ultra-innovative and intelligent smartwatch that gives every crew member instant access to crucial race condition data in real-time. The embedded system uses special editions of the commercial AQUARACER 500M CALIBRE 72 COUNTDOWN chronograph, customized for each sailor’s specific tasks and wirelessly linked directly to the boat’s onboard computers. “This was a first for sailing and a first for Swiss watchmaking,” said Stéphane Linder, TAG Heuer President and CEO. “It represents the next-generation of competitive sport technology. We’re looking forward to participating in similar ventures with teams across the full spectrum of professional sports.” The extreme-tech and exceptionally resilient digital chronograph is the first watch designed specifically for and by a professional sailing team. At a glance easy-to-read with a wideopen 51mm face, it weighs only 108 g and is impact resistant to 5000 G. The leather-strap, like the case itself, is ergonomically designed to fit comfortably over a wet suit. Classic TAG Heuer aquatic design codes are respected but the technology is completely new and innovative. The optimized highcontrast LED screen displays constantly updated information on how the boat and its sails are behaving, including boat speed, foil balance, sail pressure, true wind speed, true wind direction and true wind angle. Connected to captors and computers located throughout the boat, the real time data stream allows for unparalleled reactivity and synchronicity. Only 50 of the special Aquaracer 72 were produced and none are available commercially. All three AQUARACER 500M have helium valves and proudly bear the official colors of ORACLE TEAM USA--red, black, and white--on the hands, pusher, and face.

The name Movado is hallmark of some of the most famous timepieces ever created, most notably, the Movado Museum® Watch. Designed in 1947 by Bauhaus-influenced artist Nathan George Horwitt, the watch dial defined by a solitary dot at 12, symbolizing the sun at high noon, has been acclaimed for purity of design unrivaled in the history of time-keeping. Its revolutionary, patented movement is constructed on three planes to fit a case curved to follow the natural contours of the wrist. 1926 Launch of the Ermeto, a unique pillow-shaped watch with a patented movement automatically wound by the sliding motion of the case as it is opened and closed.

1996 – PRESENT 1996 The introduction of Vizio, post-modern watch design of architectural inspiration that expresses Movado’s unwavering commitment to design innovation. 2000 A classic style takes futuristic form with the debut of the Movado SE, an evolution of the original Sports Edition design with a new, sleekly sculptured silhouette. 2006 Launch of Series 800, the art of performance – fine Swiss quartz and automatic sport timepieces marked by sculptured contours and signature details that pay homage to the design legacy of Movado. 2010 Debut of Cerena, Movado’s modern ceramic watch design for women – a fresh and striking fashion statement in smooth white ceramic contrasted by cool stainless steel.

Inaugurated in 2010, the magnificent project of Makkah Clock Royal Tower was an architectural challenge in which the state of the art technology has been used. Built in the Noblest place of the world, near the holy Mosque of Makkah, the actual tower stands 601 meters tall, measures 46 meters and is visible from more than 25 kilometers away. Moreover, it harbors the biggest clock in the world, which uses an atomic mechanism enabling to show a highly precise time. This wonderful monument was a marvelous source of inspiration for S.T. Dupont. Hence, the house decided to combine its extensive know-how of goldsmith, crafting and hand manufacturing of writing instruments in order to create a beautiful sculpture honoring this outstanding monument. Available as either a Fountain Pen or a Roller Pen, S.T. Dupont’s Makkah Clock Tower is made of solid bronze with gold plated polish and finishing. Next year, Mr. Barry Sloane makes his major Hollywood entrance in Noah, alongside Mr. Russell Crowe and Sir Anthony Hopkins. It’s a job that will no doubt blow open the doors of possibility for the 32-year-old Liverpudlian actor, leaving the big screen at his mercy, but in light of Mr. Sloane’s earliest plans for a career in entertainment, this breakthrough is confirmation of an unfulfilled dream. “I wanted to be the new Liam Gallagher,” he tells MR PORTER, with only the merest flicker of regret, because the crash of his adolescent Britpop hopes turned out to be a great stroke of luck. In fact, rock’n’roll led to his first break in acting, when a casting agent looking for authentic young scouse musicians tapped him for a role in the TV movie, In His Life: The John Lennon Story (2000). After that he was off to the races. Trained in the British soap factory of Brookside and Hollyoaks, Mr. Sloane moved steadily up Blighty’s small-screen ranks, parlaying roles in several UK series (including Holby City and Casualty) into his current prime-time regular role in the US mystery drama, Revenge.

3

An eye-catching theatrical sideline in widely acclaimed play Jerusalem - in the West End and on Broadway - served only to bolster his chances of Hollywood success. Mr. Darren Aronofsky (director of The Wrestler, Black Swan and so on) remembered him as “that crazy guy in Jerusalem” during auditions for Noah, before adding him to the cast. Mr. Sloane joined MR PORTER in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, to fill out some more of his back story.

You grew up in Garston, Liverpool. How did your roots shape your career?

1

Your identity as a scouser is football and music. I went down the music route, had a band, and went to music college - did three years, got my qualifications there, and at the same time I was always acting, right the way through school. I was obsessed with Oasis at the time. I play bass guitar and sing. Where did you hang out back then? I used to gig at The Cavern Club, actually. We used to play there every Saturday: we were kind of residents with a couple of bands and played every Saturday afternoon. I used to hang around The Krazyhouse in the early 2000s - you would get into a mosh pit, start throwing elbows. It was an acceptable release of energy: you could hit each other quite hard but as soon as the song finished you’d give each other a cold one. And I preferred that to a fight. Did you follow Britpop fashion?

3

That’s always stayed with me, that influence. Pair of jeans and a rollneck top. I’m a jeans and T-shirt guy. Your wife Ms. Katy O’Grady is a fashion designer: does she style you? She’ll point me in the right direction. I got educated through her. I watch her cut fabric and make the stuff that she loves: that’s very seductive to me because it’s a talent that is unfathomable - it blows me away. It’s so artistic, a wonderful skill. I’m really proud of her.

You worked with Mr. Russell Crowe on Noah. What did you learn from him? He was great - it was an honor to work with him, just watching the subtleties of his performance and how he reins it back, seemingly not doing much...until you see his eyes. His intensity is incredible. Doing shoots like this, you learn about controlling what you’re showing: very subtle movements can do a lot. He was very helpful. You’ve embraced social media recently - was that an easy habit to pick up? It wasn’t - I didn’t have Facebook or Twitter [accounts]. I have the kind of personality that’s all or nothing so I knew that when I opened the door that was it. Now, I have to slow down a little bit. I tweet quite a lot and I don’t want to be one of those idiots who tweets about what he’s doing in the afternoon. I try to keep it related either to promoting Revenge or to Liverpool Football Club. Do you think Twitter demystifies the world of entertainment too much? It depends what you give. I don’t want people to know too much about me - I love Al Pacino, but I don’t want to know what he does at the weekend. I really don’t. I think that the mystery has gone, regardless. If people want to find out about you now, they will. It’s just more saturated. Stephen Fry does it quite well, he’s got all these Twitter followers, he’ll use it to publicize something important. I think that’s a responsibility that people should take on. You should tweet the right things, not just about when you’re going to go for dinner. Did your background in British soaps prepare you well for Revenge? I was blessed with a good character in Hollyoaks, and I cut my teeth in Brookside as well. The fact of the matter is, working with that kind of schedule, if you can do something good, then you can produce incredible stuff on something where you can actually take your time. I like the intensity and the quickness of Revenge. With theatre you get a huge rehearsal process; with film you rehearse a one-minute scene for a week and a half so that it’s perfect. But with TV you have to pull a rabbit out of a hat a lot. You have to trust yourself. What’s in the pipeline for you? If you get the right character now within TV it’s going to be wonderful and strong, but ultimately I’d like to do movies. There’s a load of people I want to work with and hopefully there’s a few people that want to work with me. So we’ll see.

Noah is scheduled for release in March 2014. The third series of Revenge is currently airing.

Pages Woodcut By Bryan Nash Gill & Verlyn Klinkenborg

If there is, indeed, nothing lovelier than a tree, Connecticut-based artist Bryan Nash Gill shows us why. Creating large-scale relief prints from the cross sections of trees, the artist reveals the sublime power locked inside their arboreal rings. Gill creates patterns not only of great beauty, but also year-by-year records of the life and times of fallen or damaged logs. He rescues the wood from the property surrounding his studio and neighboring land, extracts and prepares blocks of various species (including ash, maple, oak, spruce, and willow), then makes prints by carefully following and pressing the contours of rings and ridges until the intricate designs transfer from tree to paper. The results are colored, nuanced shapes—mesmerizing impressions of the structural integrity hidden inside each tree. These exquisitely detailed prints are collected and published here for the first time, with an introduction by esteemed nature writer Verlyn Klinkenborg and an interview with the artist describing his labor-intensive printmaking process. Also featured are Gill’s series of printed lumber and offcuts, such as burls, branches, knots, and scrubs. Woodcut will appeal to anybody who appreciates the grandeur and mystery of trees, as well as those who work with wood and marvel at the rich history embedded in its growth.

S. By J. J. Abrams & Doug Dorst (Author)

One book. Two readers. A world of mystery, menace, and desire. A young woman picks up a book left behind by a stranger. Inside it are his margin notes, which reveal a reader entranced by the story and by its mysterious author. She responds with notes of her own, leaving the book for the stranger, and so begins an unlikely conversation that plunges them both into the unknown. The book: Ship of Theseus, the final novel by a prolific but enigmatic writer named V.M. Straka, in which a man with no past is shanghaied onto a strange ship with a monstrous crew and launched onto a disorienting and perilous journey. The writer: Straka, the incendiary and secretive subject of one of the world’s greatest mysteries, a revolutionary about whom the world knows nothing apart from the words he wrote and the rumors that swirl around him. The readers: Jennifer and Eric, a college senior and a disgraced grad student, both facing crucial decisions about who they are, who they might become, and how much they’re willing to trust another person with their passions, hurts, and fears. S., conceived by filmmaker J. J. Abrams and written by award-winning novelist Doug Dorst, is the chronicle of two readers finding each other in the margins of a book and enmeshing themselves in a deadly struggle between forces they don’t understand, and it is also Abrams and Dorst’s love letter to the written word.

Beats RAW Goes One-on-One with the Army Army Of One is known for their style of music “Ra’n’B” which refers to a blend of Rap/Hiphop and R&B rhythms. The art of their music is so inherent that is superfluous to have a particular name for it. Their music is always coupled with some other art such as poetry, and is one of the most revealing forms of expression. In Dubai, Bahrain, Lebanon, Egypt and in their home town Kuwait, Army Of One have received significant attention from the media. Although none of them come from a family background of musicians, it was family who played an important role in motivating these young men and helped them to realize their true happiness lies in music, which lead them to follow their dream. They traveled a difficult road from their beginnings as English artists trying to make it in an Arab community. Their efforts didn’t go unnoticed though, as their music captured the interest of many listeners. Their motto in life is to please their audience and reach musical perfection with the hope to spread the message of love and peace not only to the Arab world, but also to a worldwide audience. These young Arab men are a group of fabulous entertainers who perform in their own style with songs that have an unusual mix of alternative + preference, which separates them from other male artists. They all have domineering voices, significant lyrics, and an easy new-age sound. These men are probably the most down to earth men you will ever come to meet.

Over the course of their career, Army Of One made their debut in 2005 with the release of their album “Reprezentin”. Performing in several concerts, where they have given absolutely stunning performances in Dubai, Kuwait and in Bahrain, Army Of One completely captivated the crowd. Their music has been aired on local music radio and TV stations. On stage, they are performers and storytellers who can establish, in minutes, a personal rapport with the audience. Their amazing humor and sharp observations combined with their openhearted singing style, have earned them a loyal following of many fans. And that includes everyone here at RAW, but especially me personally, Iman Abuasba writes. RAW was able to go one-on-one with these inspirational men. Here’s a different look at the men that make up Army Of One, Daffy, Face, Dub G, and QB. Photography by : Abdull St I am going to switch it up for a second. QB: Daffy. Face: Daffy. Daffy: LOL! All of the boys have dance swag but, in a dance off, I think I would be the winner! Dub G: Daffy. What’s the best thing about performing? QB: The crowd. Face: To share your music with people and hear them singing along. Daffy: The best thing about performing to me, would be the people’s reaction and feedback when they sing along and call out your name for more, like an encore. Just being on the stage doing what I love is enough. Dub G: The reaction of the crowd. What’s the worst thing about performing? QB: Not knowing if the sound system is good or not.

RAW 113

Army Of One Face: When the sound system is bad and the microphones are not clear. Sometimes it happens, but you need to continue and keep doing your thing. Daffy: The worst thing ever while performing is being booed and having bottles and cheeseburgers flying at you on stage. I really hope that never happens to any of us. Dub G: The butterflies you get before a show.

What was the most annoying song you couldn’t get out of your head at one point in time? QB: Gangnam Style. Face: Chicken Noodle Soup. Duffy: That Gulub Gulub song. Oh! And all that Miley Cyrus needs to stop!

Put RAW (magazine) in a lyric. Something that best describes the magazine. QB: RAW, just like the flow that I’m blessed with, hardcore jump around flow, we got this. Daffy: I’m the best, I‘m a beast, call me Daff the machine. I’m so real, so fly, call me Mr. Front Cover of RAW Magazine. Dub G: Collaborate with a magazine who speaks from the core/ keeping it real, it just has to be RAW.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?

Dub G: Too many, but can’t think of any, and I kind of don’t want to so it doesn’t get stuck in my head again!

QB: Timbaland, because all you need is a good beat and a hook to complete the rest.

Who or what are your top 5 (musical or not) inspirations in life?

Face: Keith Sweat, Donell Jones, Musiq, Talib Kweli, Sade, and Michael Jackson.

QB: My father, my mother, Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali, and Lloyd Frank Wright.

QB: Music is not what you hear; it’s what you feel.

Daffy: Sade and Timbaland. Sade is one of my favorite female artists of all time because of her voice and choice in music, and her lyrics are astounding. Timbaland is another idol of mine and I love his beats and the way he changes the sounds, and his whole music game.

Face: My mother, Muhammad Ali, Mahatma Gandhi, Oum Kalthoum, Bob Marley, and Michael Jordan.

Face: Music is life.

Duffy: Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Boys II Men and Usher.

Dub G: Music is a feeling that allows one to just be themselves.

Dub G: Tech N9ne, he’s the most talented rapper out now in my opinion, and Immortal Technique because he’s the realest.

Dub G: The Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), Tupac, Bob Marley, my grandfather, and Immortal Technique.

QB: Hard working and ready for the ultimate test. Face: Creative, ambitious, talented and real.

Daffy: Brazil or Amsterdam.

Daffy: A fun and happy family that loves to sing along.

Dub G: Doesn’t matter, as long as there is a crowd.

Dub G: We’re on a mission with a dream that’s been accomplished.

Dining This month I was in for a big treat. What I thought was going to be another good burger joint, instead, gave me hours of fun, Hassan Al-Mosawi writes. The location should have been my first clue that this review was going to be different. Located in Julai’a next to the chalets, it seems to attract a niche market that beforehand was somewhat neglected. Even while spending time in the chalet, people do need a hangout with good food and entertainment. I had heard of Three Guys Burgers & Pizzas before making my way there by friends who recommended the burgers. They had been ordering from them for some time now, but I was soon to discover that they were missing all the fun, and that the food in Three Guys Burgers & Pizzas is merely the icing on the cake. Located right above Starbucks and Sultan center in Julai’a, I did not imagine the sheer size of the place. Three Guys Burgers & Pizzas is not just a burger place, it’s an entertainment venue. With bowling lanes on one side, and unique arcade machines as well as classic pool tables on the other. They managed to make an entertainment space with the classy upscale touch. There weren’t any clouds of smoke hovering in the air, no extremely loud music that leaves you deaf by the time you leave. Most importantly, its spacious nature was not in any way claustrophobic, which is how I feel whenever I go to an arcade or pool bar. I immediately regretted not bringing more friends to enjoy the entertainment with me and was so excited that I forgot that I was there for a food review.

Three Guys

Ok maybe I’m too much of a child at heart, and you might find my review exaggerated, but have you ever seen a four player air hockey table?! No, no…not the two a side table, but the square table where each player has his own side? I know I would not be able to focus on the food knowing that table was there and not being played. Asking to play before we eat, one of the partners and I gathered a few staff members and played. The results of the game need not be shared. After all, we are here to talk about food aren’t we? I saw the menu and knew I was in for a treat, pizzas, burgers and fries. What more can I ask for? We ordered a selection of burgers and the trio cheese pizza. I love ordering pizza as I feel pulling a good one off is a great feat. Not any place can deliver on a good pizza. Either being too hard, not enough flavor, or simply not obtaining the right texture, so much can go wrong. By reading the ingredients I knew that the components were sound, it was all about the execution now.

The classic burger arrived first; this should always be the flagship burger that gives you an introduction to the attention to detail and skills of any burger joint. The sesame buns were very soft, first good sign! A hard dry bun can be the biggest culprit in destroying an otherwise fine burger. The second positive indication was the sauce, not your usual ketchup and mayonnaise, they seemed to have a signature sauce. This means that the person who developed the menu is a food lover, who can take a few sauces and mix his own even better sauce. My overall verdict, it was a GOOD burger. I would definitely order it again, all components came together in harmony and I really enjoyed it. So far so good right? I thought I was using my taste buds and brain effectively in this review. Until the Swiss burger arrived. That’s when my brain switched off and my passion for food was awoken. A softer bun this time, with melted cheese, mushroom and bacon. But not just any cheese, you can smell the quality a meter away and feel the richness of it, the smokiness of the bacon and mushroom filled my mouth with pure indulging flavors. The texture and how the entire burger seemed to melt in my hands and mouth made for a heavenly experience.

me to dress my pizza how I liked, and have the pleasure to enjoy the different oils. Both the texture and execution in general were excellent. We had two options delivered when it came to the fries, your typical fries, and the cheesy bacon-like wedges. I am not a potato wedges fan, but my guest seemed to really enjoy them as I watched him thank god that I wasn’t going to touch them. The fries were very addictive, crispy and of perfect size. They accommodated nearly every bite of food as it made its way down my digestive system. Overall I really enjoyed my meal, but more than anything else, the whole experience in general. Every meal is usually an experience, but this one just had a little more to offer. I would love to go back prepared, with a few friends, and really have a few rounds of gaming. We would then eat and digest the food with a round of bowling. Three Guys Burgers & Pizzas provides delivery also only for Julai’a suburb. For delivery call 96001615 or 96001617.

The classic burger I would definitely order again, but the Swiss burger…I would drive all the way there for! It was the highlight of my experience, almost topping the air hockey game! The only thing that would have been even more perfect was if I was having that burger while playing the game! The pizza was very special too; I usually love olive oil dripping on my pizza for that extra moisture and flavor. Here, I was given sides of chili olive oil and garlic olive oil, which allowed

IF YOU’RE A

Sagittarius

V

ersatile and optimistic, Sagittarius men love to travel, meet people from different walks of life, understand their lifestyles, and involve as many new experiences as possible. They are not judgmental, which is why people love to be in their company. Adventurous that they are, Sagittarius men would take risks that most people would not dare taking. It is not surprising that they often get engaged in dangerous activities, become careless with money, and push their luck in their bid to seek excitement. Sagittarius men are brutally honest and straightforward, and express their feelings as they are, so you know what’s on their minds and where they stand on most issues. They will look at the bigger picture and have a philosophical, positive take on most things and have the potential to find all the name and fame they want. But because they tend to be not concerned about possible consequences of their actions and have a carefree attitude, their potential often goes unfulfilled. Intelligent and ambitious, Sagittarius men are extremely competitive, goal-oriented, and as a result, they usually make a good career in sports and top-level management jobs. This month you are likely to face an extra dose of difficulties on all fronts, but don’t get disheartened, everyone has their own fair share of trouble, so take heart and face things confidently. However, to overcome the monotony of your day-to-day life, think out of the box to come up with new ways of carrying out your responsibilities. At first, people may not appreciate your new way of functioning, but day-byday by they will get used to it, and eventually see merit in it. On the financial front, you may come across an opportunity to make some extra cash on the side, but if you think it will involve compromising on your values, shun it. Instead, make efforts at saving more money and investing it judiciously.
