From us to you.... The season of layering, layering and more layering is upon us. Yup, fall has arrived, which means it’s time to tuck away those open-toe sandals, cut-offs and sun dresses to make room for new trends to fill up your closet. This season you’ll be replacing that heavy coat for a snug wrap and go-go boots will be your new go-to boot that will go hand-in-hand with the mini mod dress that designers fell in love with. Backpacks are everything but just being a school necessity and Game of Thrones inspires the medieval trend that we’re so crushing on. Our obsession with France is on overdrive this month, as we dedicate this issue to the oh so tres chic French fashion and its influence on the fashion industry. We also threw in a beauty tip or two on how to master the art of a certain je ne sais quoi that French women have mastered. Our September issue welcomes the cool winter weather ahead. As we replace our iced lattes with warm hot cocoas and switching up our coral colors for the deep end of the color spectrum we’re just excited as you are for a fresh new start on the fashion front.

Stay Fabulous xo

Last Month’s Issue Illustrations

African fashion has been talked about and referenced for years but no one ever stopped and thought where it all started and how it evolved to what it is today. The first thing that comes to my mind is animal prints; they have taken over the runway season after season.

Trends we Love

Trends may come and go but some just can’t seem to pass us by without influencing our personal style. A few trends we can’t get enough of are big belts, comfy knitwear, neons, and a few others too. What’s prettier than a flashy Dior dress in fuchsia or maybe a big floaty one in black? Here are the “deets” on each trend we stuck to this month:

Neon We all love a punch of color sometimes but we’ve decided to go all out in that area. From bright green Alexander Wang sweaters to bright orange coats from Chanel. Let’s ditch the usual beige and browns and opt for fuchsia and turquoise this fall. r e ra

We saw a lot of belting up at Carolina Herrera and Kenzo too. Got a loose top that needs fixing? Belt it up! Dress is a few sizes to big? Do the same. This fashion statement can be a savior in an emergency.

Hands on Don’t you love prints? So do we! These “hands” printed on is adorable, especially if it’s a manicured one on a pair of Charlotte Olympia pumps. Also, the arm candy on that Alice+Olivia top makes a big impression by itself.

Vintage chicks this is your season. The swinging sixties are back and updated for fall. Designers like Saint Laurent, DSquared2 and Gucci gave a nod to mod by sending models down the catwalk in mini A-line shift dresses, go-go boots and Mad Men-esque accessories; like short leather gloves and felt wool hats. When pulling off this trend, avoid looking dated by going for a mini dress or skirt in a modern print or with luxe embellishments. Knee-high boots are so hot this season and will add that rocking edge to your outfit. SALVATORE FERRAGAMO Leather Doctor Bag [Salvatore Ferragamo Boutique]

Medieval Maiden

This season the dark ages come into the light on the runway. If you thought the only thing to swoon over while watching Game of Thrones is hunky Jon Snow – well he have to admit he is pretty hot – then girlfriend you’re missing the big picture, because winter is coming and knightly inspired fashion is taking over. At Dolce & Gabbana we saw a medieval march down the runway with models dressed in mini dresses and hoods, while over at Tory Burch, her collection was inspired by her parents armor collection. Look for metal embellishments, chainmail details and metallic accents on a dark palette in black, gunmetal or ox blood.

Greige Dusty shades in grey, beige and mauve makes for a beautiful palette that eases the transition from summer into fall. From eveningwear like that grey gown paired with a powder pink stole at Ralph Lauren, or more relaxed and effortless style shown at Michael Kors to a cool edgy city look at DKNY. These neutral shades are a winning combination for any personal style.

It’s a wrap Let’s take you back to when we were younger and our mothers wore those wool wrap scarves as an alternative to a coat all winter. Some of them had little pop poms on the him others had fringe, and she always looked so warm and elegant. Now those wraps are back and updated for us to fall in love them – sans the pom poms of course. Living in a desert country where the temperature barely drops during winter, we wait patiently for that one week where we can actually put on a coat and not look ridiculous. For those other days where there’s a cool bite in the breeze the wrap is the perfect solution for taking cover.

Summer is officially over. For some of you it’s back to class and for others well you haven’t attended a lecture in ages, but that’s not an excuse not to carry the latest trend in bags. Backpacks are back! If you think about it they never left, but left behind in our youth. We’re telling you that you’ll fail if you didn’t rock a double strap carryall this season and yes you can wear it to work and beyond. Post Apocalypse It’s just another day you know, going to work looking prepared if a zombie apocalypse were to take place that day or going to a rave before saving the world or your just planning on Tokyo drifting right after slaying alien invaders. The chances of the world coming to an end this season is pretty slim but just looking at the catwalk you would think otherwise. Distressed, mismatched and fringed in electrifying colors are on the radar. And this rough and rugged trend will have you surviving any post apocalypse battle.

Moschino’s new Creative Director Jeremy Scoot, taps into consumer culture for fall. Making the most of the brand’s accessories, Moschino showed a little love by infusing McDonalds’ famous golden arches into a heart shape ‘M’, stamped all over shoes and handbags in a bright red and yellow palette. There you have it, for our health conscious reader’s it’s hard not to admit that Moschino brought back the happy in happy meals.

Raf Simons (Creative Director of Christian Dior) certainly outdid himself with the most recent Fall/Winter14 shoe collection. This beautiful shoe is the subject of every fashionable conversation this month and we’re beginning to see it on every foot too! This shoe elegantly combines futuristic techniques with innovative structure says Raf. This shoe is certainly not for grocery shopping, but is quite suitable for a day event or maybe for dinner. Keep the dress simple, let the shoes do the talking! They are available at Christian Dior boutiques (Salhiya Complex and The Avenues Mall).

To Each Clique its Own Fashion Week started out as being an event that allows brands to showcase their latest collections on the runways. The attendees are mostly buyers, media, influential people in the fashion industry, and also a few pretty faces they like to call “socialites” in other words, perspective buyers. The most known fashion weeks are obviously New York, London, Milan, and then Paris in that order. Some others include Berlin, Manila, Madrid, Los Angeles, Dubai, Boston, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, and many others but we can call them “unofficial fashion weeks.” Fashion changes, hierarchy of importance also changes, but there are things that are constant. Like what you might ask? The attendees, the atmosphere, the competitions (what competitions?!), and much more. Before you proceed with this article, we recommend you re-watch the movie Mean Girls, as we will be referencing a few things from there. Plus, it’s always fun to watch, Rawan Qabazard writes. Let us start at the very beginning. The fashion industry is like a high-school cafeteria, different cliques on different tables, for example:

The tortured artists The photographer who wants to capture everything and everyone and wants more credit than he/ she actually receives.

The Jocks Can we call us, the media, the jocks? Don’t we make all the calls at the end? We are the ones who end up writing reviews about the show and what we personally thought about it. Also, Anna Wintour is always first row so that’s a huge hint right there.

Illustration designed by Abdullah Zouhairi Sept 92 STYLES 56

Preps

The fashion world is an amazing one, but can be quit cruel and

This is a sub-clique of the popular clique usually means they’re the most social, fun, and most likely to be crowned as prom queen. Can we take a lucky guess and say these are the models? Aside from the fashion, a lot of people look at which models are chosen for which shows and how their walks differ and how they act on the runway.

scary at times (just like high school). Here’s a few pointers on how to survive fashion week:

Hipsters

4) Never opt for flats.

People who make a big effort to assemble a wardrobe that seems effortless. The wanna be famous fashion bloggers but not really there yet. Can you deny that? We love those blog posts of them “pretending to walk across the street” posing but give us a break, they’re exactly like socialites but with tags on their pictures of the brands they’re wearing.

1) Always smile for the cameras. 2) Dress well. If you think you’re overdoing it with the huge headpiece, you’re probably not so leave it on. 3) Respect the front row attendees; they’re your ticket to this industry.

5) Get your hair and make-up done, but don’t overdo the crazy eye shadow colors, keep it neutral. Leave the smoky eyes for the after party. 6) NEVER wear sweatpants even if it’s Friday. Do not use the Mean Girls’ excuse; “Regina said it was ok” will not get the security to sympathize with you. 7) If it’s Wednesday, you wear pink. If you’re not wearing pink, it’s not the end of the world…

The geeks During fashion show, this has to be the designers. Currently obsessing over every single detail of the show, wants everything to go according to plan, and wants to get an A+ on his/her designs! Yup, designers are fashion week’s geeks.

The mean girls

Socialites for sure! Honey just because you’re dressed head-totoe in this season’s Chloe at the Chloe show doesn’t give you any right to look at us like that, we can easily rate you as a 5/10 in next month’s issue if you think you’re all that (not getting personal though). However, these girls really do know how to dress and we have to give them some, not all, credit for that. But somebody tell these princesses that it’s ok to smile from time to time. Jennifer Lawrence fell at The Oscars in both the years 2013 and 2014

r o i v a Beh Dressed up in the latest trend, leather jeans and a casual tee. Applying your bright “morange” lipstick from M.A.C while walking in your Louboutin Daffodils (6 inch heels) and suddenly *BAM* you trip and fall flat on your face! Feeling shy and awkward? Don’t be! At least by the time you get up and brush off the dust and walk away people will forget… eventually. Imagine having your fall documented. You think these models we call flawless aren’t as clumsy as us when put on stilettos on a waxy runway? Even worse, their falls are used as examples for future models! It’s not how you fall, it’s how you pick up yourself gracefully and continue the walk. Here are a few runway falls we (nor the rest of the media) can forget, Rawan Qabazard writes.

Eley Kishimoto

Naomi Campbell at Vivienne Westwood FW93 This is probably the most famous of them all. In Paris 1993, Naomi was put in a pair of 9 inch crocodile heels, and judging by that glossy runway, she had every right to that fall and it certainly didn’t affect her career.

Graceful don’t you think?

Milana Bogolepova at Dior Cruise 2007 Most chosen video to watch on google when searching “models slip” for almost a year, this fall certainly made it to the books! Iekeliene Stange opening at Marc Jacobs SS07 This is one of our personal favorites. When the unworn soles of her flat sandals caused her to slip and twist her feet, she just kicks them off and shrugs! Not her fault I guess… Karen Elso closing Zac Posen FW08 Why is it always the heels? Thank god for model Caroline Trentini for helping her up and Pdiddy too! Prada at SS09 This show was a total catastrophe! The shoes didn’t agree with the floor causing multiple falls. Some even fell more than once or twice! Monika Jagaciak at Herve Leger FW 09 Only 15 years of age, she acting all charming and smiled as soon as she fell flat on her face, don’t worry it’s too early in her career to take any bad reviews. Jennifer Lawrence fell at The Oscars in both the years 2013 and 2014 It’s not only models who have their falls documented, celebrities have their share of embarrassing moments too. The most recent is J-Law in both 2013 and 2014’s Oscars! Can we blame it on Dior couture? Or maybe the shoes? We’ll never know. But she always handles it by using her sense of humor and we love it. Roland Mouret’s collaboration amplifies Banana Republic’s signature Sloan Collection

R

Roland Mouret and Banana Rebuplic have teamed up together to give your office wardrobe a sophisticated yet sexy update. No more showing up to work in frilly frumpy frocks, this covetable limited-edition capsule collection highlights Mouret’s keen understanding of fit and the female form through the use of Banana Republic’s Sloan fabric. Sloan fabric – is a unique blend of rich, bistretch fabric, which creates a “magic” fit that shapes through figure-flattering silhouettes. Mouret, famous for his skills in draping, structure and style, naturally gravitated toward this signature material, which he hand-draped, cut and pinned on the body to create this iconic jaw dropping collection. The 25-piece capsule that’s composed of body-hugging dresses, tailored cigarette pants and contouring blazers shines light on Mouret’s talent and craftsmanship through the use of this dynamic stretchy fabric. The French designer is best known for his feminine, hourglass fitted dresses, which have become a favorite among Hollywood stars. In 2006, the British based designer with a French heart and soul, became a household name when A-listers first wore Mouret’s nowfamous Galaxy dress on the red carpet. The Roland Mouret for Banana Republic Collection pushes fashion and function with must-have additions that translates to a stylish modern wardrobe.

Partnering with Banana Republic on this project was such an adventure for me,” says Roland Mouret, founder and designer of his namesake label. “The common goal for this collection is to offer incredible fit through an assortment of hourglass silhouettes using Banana Republic’s Sloan fabric, extending my love of structure into accessible prices. These pieces are multi-functional for the modern woman to wear and accessorize in her own way, making her always ready for life’s journey.

Styles: What attracted you to partner with a high street brand, and why do you feel the collaboration with Banana Republic is a fit? Roland Mouret: Partnering with Banana Republic on this project was such an adventure for me. This partnership is a great fit for both of us because we both have the same goal of making women feel and look beautiful in what they’re wearing. Styles: :What was your design process for the capsule?

Styles: This is the second time you’ve collaborated with a large retailer, following your collaboration with Gap in 2006. What attracts you to partner with a high street brand, and why do you feel the collaboration with Banana Republic is fitting? Roland Mouret: Working with Gap on a dress collection was a great experience, and I am excited now to work with Banana Republic on a larger capsule – nearly three times the size of my Gap collaboration, and also this time with a global retail presence.

Roland Mouret: I met with the Banana Republic team and we literally draped the Sloan fabric on a fit model to give her the most flattering look possible. I worked to connect myself with Banana Republic’s Sloan fabric, and was amazed at how seamlessly the fabric worked as I draped each piece.

Styles: How did your collaboration with Gap in 2006 sell? Was the consumer response positive?

Styles: What drew you to use the Sloan fabric as the basis for the capsule? What makes it unique?

Styles: Styles: What was it like working together on this project?

Roland Mouret: I was initially drawn to the Sloan fabric for this collection because of its stretchy but firm texture. The material gives a smoothing appearance and creates a formfitting silhouette, which has always been part of my design DNA. Styles: What was your design goal with the collection? Roland Mouret: The common goal for this collection is to offer incredible fit through an assortment of hourglass silhouettes using Banana Republic’s Sloan fabric, extending my love of structure and silhouette into accessible prices. These pieces are multi-functional for the modern woman to wear and accessorize in her own way, making her always ready for any occasion. This capsule in particular is an opportunity to offer great quality and style at a more affordable price. I am excited to bring my designs to an entirely new customer and market. Styles: How would you describe the Roland Mouret for Banana Republic woman? Roland Mouret: The Roland Mouret for Banana Republic woman is adventurous and needs to dress for a variety of occasions. She is very self-assured and isn’t afraid to make bold decisions when it comes to her style. Styles: Do you have a favorite look / piece from the collection? Roland Mouret: My favorite look from the collection is the a-symmetrical one shoulder dress. It really reflects my signature style, with a new fabric to create a unique and flattering shape. Styles: You have so many celebrity fans of your work. Who would you love to see in a piece from the collection? Roland Mouret: I aspire to make every woman look and feel amazing no matter who they are. Sept 92 STYLES 62

Roland Mouret: I cannot comment on how the collection sold, but we were pleased with the customers’ response.

Roland Mouret: The Banana Republic team were true collaborators through the entire process. The capsule is an iconic blend of the best of both brands; Roland Mouret and Banana Republic. Melloney and I share an aesthetic point-of-view that made it easy to deliver a capsule that married our vision of the Roland Mouret for Banana Republic woman. It was a lot of fun working with her and the Banana Republic team to see the collection come to life. Styles: How / when do you see the pieces being worn? Roland Mouret: I see these pieces on an elegant woman who wants to look and feel incredible for every occasion. The collection is versatile, with some pieces perfect for a day at the office worn with a blazer, and easily updated with different shoes or accessories for a night out. Styles: Sum up the collection in three words. Roland Mouret: Sexy, elegant, and chic.

Swinging in the Dark Fall/Winter 2014 Collection Black, mastic, granite, slate: the Lanvin Fall/Winter 2014 collection reflects the shadow of every storm. A gust of wind on macramĂŠ tweed reveals a jacket constructed around a spiral, with its side sections flapping as if fringed with false eyelashes, a detail seen throughout the collection. Tribal travelling: this season reflects the expression of constant movement, with draped or pleated imitation stretch leather rustling from asphalt to red carpet. This is an expression of the freedom of existence, of motion, of stepping from one continent to the next shod in gold satin ballet slippers or thigh-high boots, with fox fur baubles, feathers and fringes swinging in the breeze. Fears and dreams, short skirts and oversized silhouettes, imitation leather and real fur. Clutches in chocolate velvet, supple natural leather and lizard-print lambskin are there to be carried under all latitudes. J/A91 STYLES 64

As it is winter, a cloak of black and ivory mink hangs over a sand-colored soft satin dress, an asymmetric khaki trench over a baroque dress in spotted jacquard. Ebbing into the ink-black darkness, khaki leads the palette, as bags swing lively from jeweled chains, hewn from patent python or natural leather. Nature itself acts as a chameleon, sumptuous and feline. The city becomes a cosmopolitan jungle in which to appear. Tape bag, Pack bag... Different designs reflect different shapes and materials. Boots and jewels alike work with fluid fabrics, gushing jersey or compact stretch. The season is placed under the auspices of every extreme, from fairytale to witchcraft, simplicity and complexity, powdered halos and khol blacks. From sunrise to darkened sunsets, wide feathered hats are in the image of the midnight sun. Lanvin is located at The Avenues Mall Prestage area and AlThuraya Mall

Enchanted: A Midwinter Night’s Dream Fall/Winter 2014 collection Stacey Bendet’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection for Alice & Olivia is, “Enchanted: A Midwinter Night’s Dream”. Sharp tailoring combines with vintage Victorian charm and bohemian beauty, creating a freespirited decadence. Suffused with luxe modernity, the collection features bold brocades, rich velvet, regal lace and opulent metallics, mixed with monarch butterfly motifs. Dreamy prints on tapestry fabrics are adorned with fine filigree amid jewel-toned blue, green and “royal red”. Metallic is the new black, while camel, cream and chocolate serve as a rich neutral base. Romantic collars, lace blouse details, ruffled sleeves and chokers are paired with ultra-miniskirts, slouchy menswearinspired pants and the new fitted denim trouser - a juxtaposition of the past and the present. Fall 2014 introduces several strong silhouettes including the winter short, tailored flair back jacket, crop jacket and statement coat. Novelty knits add fanciful appeal, and blanket knit coats make for cozy toppers over whimsical printed dresses. Alice & Olivia is located at The Avenues Mall – Second Avenue

Fall/Winter 2014 Collection

Silhouettes hold contrasts in volume with everything amplified. Lean and tall or high-waisted and exaggerated, the structure remains resolutely ultra-feminine. Collars are reinterpreted, blown up and tied around the waist as nonchalantly and intimately as the appropriation of mans coat. Tools, printed and embroidered onto jackets, skirts and pants come in woods, metals and Perspex. Tailored suits are quilted with down. Fox fur coats in “wild lula lime” “laura lila” and “ midnight Dorothy” transform with detachable paneling. Lacquered twill jackets in flame inject fire colors to the palette. Skirts and dresses with shaved kangaroo are paired and layered with cross coats and embroidered and shredded organza. Foiled mohair grosgrain ribbons appear as belts and as inserts on trousers. Prints this season come in warped version of habitual vista, the David Lynch herring-bone flooring and reflections of mountain in shattered glass. A layered organza adds 3-D effect to skirts and tops. Sweaters feature high definition tryptic embroidery and metallic foiling.

Round shoulders in jackets and dresses are complimented by rich and varied textures and prints. Sharp geometric shapes inspired by architectural forms are basis of prints, both hand-painted and all-over patterns, cut appliqué and crystal embroideries. The combination of colors from navy slate, turquoise paired with deep mahogany and antique brass to brights – firestone and cobalt, and the range of refined materials – silk twill, cashmere, wool felt, jacquard and gazar mixed with fur and leather in gentle silhouettes underscores the fresh spirit of a new season. Urban Sensuality Fall/Winter 2014 Collection

Sonia by Sonia Rykiel’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection is an ode to urban sensuality where the understated style of the Parisian meets the melting-pot of the Harajuku girl. Sexier than ever and just as mischievous. The Sonia girl takes her cues from the streets of Tokyo, where improbable layers clash and collide into unexpected harmonies. When the temperature drops, every sexy urban girl knows that it’s not excuse to compromise her curves. This season at Sonia by Sonia Rykiel you’ll be ready to take on the cold in figurehugging merinos, a less expected dress in Klein blue satin, and a mini in neon pink. But when that blistering breezing starts to pick up, throwing on a pair of baggy woolen boyfriend pants and an oversized cocoon coat in teddy bear fur, the cold won’t stand a chance. Multiple metal zip details give an urban edge to softer fabrics in throughout the collection. Giving attitude to a Perfecto woolen overcoat send flashing slits up the sides of the AUTUMN-WINTER 2014and COLLECTION fitted skirts and slinky tops, where striped under layers conceal what might go bare during the milder months. Rykiel’s stripes are central to the collection, ordering color, structure and shape. They wrap around curves, appear suddenly through side-vents and descend the body in color-block or polka dot, right down to the striped elastic sidings of the velvet flock-spotted Chelsea boots. Sonia by Sonia Rykiel’s Fall/Winter 2014 stripes are traced as if by hand, undercutting the urban grit with subtle softness, for a blurry sensuality that sees the mohair clouds of coats and sweaters ruled in tartan and a giant gingham. The stripe itself becomes a garment: a circular strip of ribbed wool, worn as a belt, worn wider on the chest as a bustier or wrapped around the neck as a snuggly snood. Taking its cues from the Japanese Obi that’s used to fasten kimonos, it can pull the silhouette in at the waist, create bold contrast with existing layers, as well as giving an extra dose of that all-important winter warmth.

From one century to the next, from the 19th to the 21st century, the brand has, in this way, been part of women’s lives, devoting all its talent and energy to dressing them with comfortable and yet affordable elegance.

There was Albert Weill, and then Robert Weill. Today, Jean-Claude Weill is still around in the role of watchful patriarch and luminary figure, but it is his children, Bernard, Jean-Pierre and Viviane who keep the enthusiasm and the development alive, supported in turn by the representatives of the fifth generation of family members, Elie and AmĂŠlie.

Weill is not one of these sleeping beauties that has woken up today, as Weill has never slept, and that is where it is exceptional. No revolution, but rather a permanent evolution, no coughs and splutters, but rather a continuous flow, which from decade to decade, from year to year, follows chic in the best sense of the word, chic imprinted with maturity and reason, symbolized by coats and dresses in particular, but also by suits, blazers and knitwear, which share the same luxurious materials, a quality which speaks for itself where both fitting and wearing are concerned, cashmere and tweed, muslin and jerseys which can be worn as much for style as for confidence.

West L.A.

Alia Korayem is an Egyptian, who was born and raised in Saudi Arabia. She moved a lot between Saudi and California but she always loved the laid back life of in Cali, and the way that lifestyle reflects on the L.A. fashion scene. After Alia moved to Dubai she couldn’t find anything that gave her the same shopping experience so she constantly shopped from L.A. and was always stopped by people asking her where she got her items. It was then that she realized that the L.A. lifestyle compliments the Dubai lifestyle too. Without a second thought West L.A. happened where they offer super cool underground brands from around the world and gave their customers a sense of freedom where they can wear what they want and be who they are with no judgment. Their customers go into the store and instantly feel relaxed, they start bobbing their heads to the music, walk around barefoot when they try to find things and nobody in the store ever pushes items on them. They give an honest opinion if something doesn’t look good, they tell them straight up. West L.A. makes sure this attitude and style is reflected onto their newly launched website www.westlaboutique.com

Styles: In three words describe West L.A.?

just the night before opening and had to pull an all-nighter to get every item ready - have them steamed, merchandised, hung and placed. It was so chaotic and I was freaking out that the store was not going to be set up by the time guests started arriving! Thankfully, I have an amazing friend that was by my side the entire time and kept reassuring me that everything was going to be fine. Styles: Describe to us the West L.A. girl? Alia: She does her own thing regardless to what everyone thinks. She is headstrong and always gets what she wants by working for it. She is independent, opinionated, confident and fun. She’s not afraid to be herself and wears whatever she wants. She’ll wear an evening gown with sneakers in the morning, and show up to work with sea salt in her hair after a morning surf. She is true to herself and won’t compromise who she is for anyone or anything.

Alia: We.Are.Awesome. Styles: Was it always a dream to own your very own boutique? Alia: I always loved to reflect my personality and lifestyle through clothes. I never cared much about fashion and trends; I just loved being true to who I am. The thought of owning a boutique was super random and I immediately knew that’s what I was meant to do and I couldn’t be happier. Styles: What were the challenges that you faced while in the process of launching West L.A. and how did you overcome them? Alia: The biggest challenge of all was the day the store opened – I got the keys to the store literally

Styles: What are your best selling trends of the season at the boutique? Alia: At our store, we don’t tend to follow trends, we like to create our own. It’s impossible to be able to point out the best sellers as we have so many different customers with different styles. They all buy things very differently so that makes most of our items best sellers in their own way. Styles: In addition to the designers that you carry, who are your personal favorite designers and why?

for their crazy cool muscle tees, Lazy Oaf for its quirk, Mink Pink for their sweaters – the list just goes on and on. Styles: Talk to us about your personal style? Alia: My style varies depending on my mood. It’s very boy meets girl. I’m very laid back and I love my sweaters. I wear literally whatever I feel like wearing even if it’s a gown to work. I would describe it as grungy 80s dude meets 50s lady-like clothes. Styles: If you could just drop everything and leave, where would you go and what are five essential items we would find in your suitcase? Alia: Honestly, I’ll still go straight to the office, there is nowhere else I would rather be! I love working, it’s so much fun for me and if I’m not working I get insanely bored - it just doesn’t feel right. The only five items I will need would be my laptop, music, Red Bull, cell phone, and because I’m technologically challenged, I need several notebooks for all of my notes. Styles: Who are you following on Instagram that you think is super cool at the moment? Alia: I’m sort of prehistoric so I really don’t use social media – pretty old school I know! The ones I do follow is our own account @westlaboutique and I love checking out our brands pages – UNIF, Lazy Oaf, Cameo, Finders Keepers etc. WEST L.A. is located in Dubai, Sunset Mall and online www.westlaboutique.com

Alia: It’s really so hard to pick because each brand is unique in its own way. It’s kind of like making me pick from all my babies! I love UNIF J/A STYLES 81

Elements from the masculine wardrobe melded with sportswear to create a modern tale on femininity. This Karl Lagerfeld collection brings together the line’s established classics with a luxurious twist for Fall-Winter 2014-2015. Among the timeless essentials, the ideal white shirt comes with a cotton piqué or pleated front, or a leather collar. This season, the biker jacket moves up a level with a rich leather version whose sleeves can be unzipped for added versatility. Padded biker-style details feature on leather trousers (both slim and boyfriend versions) as well as on upgraded jogging pants and sweats. Neoprene also brings its sporty edge to tailored separates, while the K-effect “Kuilted” stitching - already a key feature in the accessories line - invites itself onto bomber-style puffas and sweats. Tailored wool provides a masculine element to the collection with checked coats and trousers, while knits opt for texture with leather inserts and large stitching. A flower and chain print on satin adds a playful feminine element. The “Karl” profile again makes its appearance on leathers and sweatshirts. Jeans can be dressed up or down, available in a selection of contrasted finishes.

For a second time around H&M’s Studio Fall 2014 collection has us obsessed all over again. The collection was showcased during Paris Fashion Week with a front-row of celebrity A-listers and respective icons in the fashion world, we couldn’t help but be just a wee bit jealous. The tomboy image sets the mood where top models took the runway in rugged bomber jackets and masculine pieces that were paired with sexy slip dresses and draped materials which translates into sophisticated hotness. We had the opportunity to talk to H&M’s Head of Design Ann-Sofie Johansson, on the inspiration behind the collection and a few tips on how to master the feminine meets masculine trend this season. Style: Tell us a little about yourself. Ann-Sofie Johansson: I always wanted to work in fashion. My mother made almost all my clothes and I made clothes for my Barbie-dolls. Dressing them up in various outfits was the best thing I knew. After high school, in 1984 I began my studies, majoring in art science at the Lund’s University, but my dream was always to become a fashion designer, so I studied cutting and pattern making at Malmö University. Then in 1987, I started working as a sales assistant at an H&M store, thinking it was the best way to apply for a job at the design department. H&M was my number one choice because it was my favorite fashion destination whenever I went shopping. They always had everything you were looking for. While I was working as a sales assistant at H&M, I continued my education taking classes in fashion and advertising at Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm. Finally in 1990, I applied for a job as a design assistant position at H&M and, it was Margareta van den Bosh, today Creative Advisor, who hired me. At H&M design department, we work with constant customer focus, my store background provided me the customer insight that I needed to create best-seller collections. From there on I worked at Divided and Ladies concepts as a designer; I was really flattered when they asked me to take on her role as Head of Design in 2008. Styles: What was the inspiration behind H&M’s Studio Fall/Winter 2014 collection? Ann-Sofie Johansson: For the Studio collection we felt for a lot of different influences - we looked to the 90s and a young Kate Moss, we talked about Charlotte Gainsbourg and her tomboy look, we also felt for sporty references and we wanted it all to be a collection that you can mix in many different ways and it should feel cool and effortless. We worked with tactile fabrics like leather, velvet, faux fur, mohair and silk in black, navy, khaki green and off-white with a warm red as an accent. J/A 91 STYLES 84

Troian Bellisario, Miranda Kerr, jourdan Dunn and Jessica Alba

Styles: What are the main trends that we should keep a look out for from the collection? Ann-Sofie Johansson: The tomboy look is very strong, with all the menswear influences. It really could not be overlooked and it felt natural to add it into the collection and present it to our customers.

Ann-Sofie Johansso

Styles: The slip dress is a key garment piece in the collection, how can women in the Middle East incorporate this key item into their everyday fall wardrobe? Ann-Sofie Johansson: The 90s is a very strong influence right now. Why not wear the dress over a pair of denims and boots - fashionable and yet functional. Styles: What is the trick to achieving the perfect balance in mixing masculine and feminine pieces together?

Olivia Palermo and Johannes Huebl

Ann-Sofie Johansson: I think it might lie in the contrasts - mix a crispy white shirt with a very feminine wide skirt in black, for example. Styles: If you could give our readers a little fashionable advice what would it be? Ann-Sofie Johansson: You always need stylish accessories to finish off a look, its like the icing on the cake. We have our high-boots in suede and patent leather that is key, especially the ones in red. They can make any outfit look cool.

Hermes

Arceau Cheval d’Orient In a cavalcade of motifs inspired by one of the iconic service sets by the Maison Hermès, Arceau Cheval d’Orient highlights the art of French lacquer through three horological compositions. To give life to these equestrian scenes from a dreamlike Orient, all the patience and meticulous care of an experienced lacquer specialist are devoted to taking up the challenge of miniaturization. Inventiveness is also called upon, since French lacquer craftsmanship on a metal base, instead of the traditional wood or bamboo, requires a partial revisiting of the traditional techniques. Each of these dials is then assembled in a white gold Arceau model, driven by a Manufacture Hermès H1837 caliber. These superb and graceful horses decked out in their Persian saddle rugs thus nobly escort Hermes’ enduringly entwined passions for artistic craftsmanship and the equestrian world.

Jaeger-LeCoultre

Grande Reverso Ultra Thin 1931 chocolate-colored timepieces In the early 1930s, when polo players at last had a watch suited to the practice of their sport thanks to its brilliant reversible case, elegant gentlemen also made their move on this new invention. Always on the lookout for new trends, they were quick to discover the beauty of a timepiece originally designed to enable British colonial army officers to compete in polo matches without the risk of breaking the then vulnerable glass of their watch. Within a few years of its birth, the Reverso was already widely appreciated by a broad audience including watch making fans won over by the technical feat involved in the swivel case, as well as sports lovers and aesthetes.

From the Streets of London

Dynamic Dazzlers

This summer I realized I was in need of some serious retail therapy. Naturally, I decided to take a trip to London to revamp my closet. Sometimes the best trick for staying up to speed in fashion is to take a trip across the Atlantic to discover what the other continents are sporting this season. Obviously living in LA I have great access to fashion, but shopping in another city allows for a change of scenery and sometimes a completely new collection. Did you know most designers carry different stock in each city? They do. Designers cater to the market they’re in, that’s why sometimes you will find exotic skins in some cities and better leather in others. In California, for example, you can’t buy endangered skins, so python is out. Before arriving to London, my friend had clued me in on the new shoe section in Harrods, called Shoe Heaven. At first I thought she was joking about the name, but upon arriving at Harrods I soon discovered that it was nothing short of ‘a heaven for shoes.’ I used to think the shoe section at Selfridges was par none, until I saw the one at Harrods! Literally every single shoe designer you could think of or want had a boutique style set up. I started out with Tods, being in London and not wanting to wear heels while I walk, this loafer seemed like a good go to. Not only did they carry multiple colors, Tods actually had an exclusive pair just for Harrods- a beautiful silver snakeskin looking loafer that I absolutely had to buy. Now the great part about Harrods is that you can do all your tax free shopping inside, its quick and easy. Most importantly, I could have all my bags taken downstairs so I wouldn’t have to be bothered carrying all that weight while I continued shopping. Anyways back to shoes. So I continued browsing through all the Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin, Louis Vuitton and Rene Caovilla. What’s amazing is that while I was looking at shoes, I kept getting distracted by the bags. I decided to pause my shoe shopping to take a look at the bags. I was very distraught because I had recently had a beautiful blue Givenchy Pandora bag stolen from me in Greece and seriously needed to do something to get my mind off of it. So I decided to head to Givenchy to see what other colors they had. It was like a miracle, I found a black Pandora box with stingray! I had to have this! I never saw this skin in the U.S.A so I knew it had to be a limited edition. After that I decided to take a look at Prada. They had the most adorable colors in their collections and I decided to try something different. Normally I would go for beige, brown, black, or white. This time I decided to try a lime green. The color was lovely in the Saffiano tote and the size being small made it a great accessory for a day dress. I figured the color would always work in L.A. despite the season, being that we don’t have a winter. After the bags I needed a break so I headed to the Georgian tearoom upstairs for a lovely afternoon tea. Although, I ended up going to Selfridges later for a look at some trendy British fashion, I realized that the shoes and bags in Harrods had to be my favorite. And for clothing I definitely prefer Harvey Nichols and Selfridges. London is home to some of the best shopping in the world; so don’t limit yourself to the department stores. Venture out and try finding small boutiques that carry new designers based out of London.

Chic!

French Fashion and its Influence on the Fashion Industry

When you trace your family tree to find out who your relatives are you come across a person who, in everyone’s eyes, is the head of the family, a.k.a big boss. In fashion, when you trace back, we always seem to land on the same conclusion. France is and will always be where it all started. From pret-a-porter (ready to wear) to haute couture (the most expensive there is) it’s all in this country for us to play around with. We can’t just mention Paris because where do the rich fabrics come from? Lyon, Nice, and Marseille. Where do all those designers and luxury providers meet and shove life’s pleasures (shoes, jewelry, fashion etc.) in our faces? Cannes, St. Tropez… You get the point! It all started in the reign of Louis XIV (the fourteenth in case you need brushing up on your Roman math). His wife, Marie Antoinette was quite the character as well. The French mostly hated her because they blame her for the financial status of the country at that time. It was mentioned that her “lavish spending” had put the country in debt. Also, there was an incident where someone told the princess that the peasants had no bread, she had responded “Let them eat brioche,” but this incident is still arguable as a journalistic cliché. “La Mode” which is fashion in French came excessively in royal control; the French court was the arbiter of taste and style of Europe. They were what Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld are to us now; always first row in fashion shows and their opinion is what matters most. Even if you though that last season Chloe top is still in, you need to run it by Louis to make sure. Just kidding! (Not really, check the styling section for more info about that). In the years 1860 to 1960, fashion houses, the fashion press, and fashion shows all starting launching in France. Huge brands and fashion houses such as Chanel and Balenciaga forced the world to look in their direction when it came to fashion. When other countries started to evolve in this area too, Christian Dior came out with a new look in 1947 that wowed the crowd back in. Fashion at that time was still not for everyone and very expensive, but oh so pretty! After 1960, designer Yves Saint Laurent broke the fashion cycle by launching his pret-a-porter line, other designers followed his lead! Pret-a-porter, ready-to-wear as we call it, focuses on mass production and different marketing techniques. Have you ever seen an ad for a dress that costs over 10,000 euros? Of course not, these dresses market themselves, but for ready-to-wear special marketing techniques are used to lure buyers in. On the other hand, haute couture is a whole different concept. It refers to high fashion or high dressmaking. It is the creation of exclusive custom clothing such as gowns without any use of machinery (all handmade). Designers usually use the most expensive and highest of quality fabrics and materials. The attention to detail when constructing a piece is unimaginable considering how much time, money, and effort is put into it. No budget is allocated for these pieces as most of them are just showcased by the designer at fashion shows and not actually sold.

However, it differentiated between other brands because at that time Celine and her husband Richard had created the first luxury “made-to-measure” children’s shoe business. Different designers have been appointed as creative directors, one was Michael Kors who gave the clothes a special touch. At the moment, Phoebe Philo is the creative director who continues to work wonders.

Givenchy Here’s a question, which brand was Kim K’s (latest) wedding gown? Ch-ching! That’s right. It was Givenchy. This fashion house had a lot of history since it started in 1952 by designer Hubert de Givenchy. From ready-to-wear lines to Haute Couture gowns. The current creative director, Riccardo Tisci… well, what can we say? You’ve seen the current collections! We’re literally speechless. All we can say is that that man has got serious talent and we can’t wait to see what he stirs up next.

KISS n’ MAKE-UP

A certain je ne sais quoi A lot of people have a certain make-up look that looks flawless but you can’t quite put your finger on what part makes the look. This person must have a certain “je ne sais quoi” as the French say it. Try a few makeup looks and see what suits you. Eye-liner can be beautiful to define almond shaped eyes. Or maybe nude eye shadow and a lot of voluminous HD mascara and bold colored lips. Don’t forget to clean off all that make-up at night and put on some Clarins Restorative night cream to give your skin a refreshing glow.

By Yasmine Tavakoli

Ever wanted to know why a certain perfume smells different on you than your friend? Or how you can make a perfume last longer? Or simply what the difference is between an Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum? Well, this guide might just be the thing to answer our most sought after questions about perfume. First off, why do perfumes smell different on our friends? The answer lies in our body chemistry. Notice how when women are hormonal, their ‘pheromones’ are affected? The fact is that everything in our daily lives changes how a fragrance affects our skin’s natural smell. So while you may have less stress or may not be pregnant, your friend who’s 6 months pregnant won’t have the same reaction to woody undertones. Ever notice how certain days, perfume seems to evaporate more quickly? Dry skin tends to evaporate perfume faster, so lather up on the lotion if you want your perfume to last throughout the evening. That’s why certain designers have body lotions made of the same fragrance as the perfume. If you don’t want to use too much of the same fragrance, opt for Vaseline or any kind of heavy oil. Another tip is lightly misting your hair with perfume; you may notice that your hair will hold the fragrance longer. Now, what is the difference between all the Eaus? For starters, the difference is based solely on the strength of the perfume. Eau de Toilette generally has a lower level of oil in concentration to the mix of alcohol and water (usually 4-10%), while Eau de Parfum has anywhere from 8-15 % perfume oil. Eau de Cologne has about 2-5% perfume oil, while Eau Fraiche has less than 3%. The most concentrated forms are Soie de Parfum, which has 15-18%, or Parfum/Perfume oil, which has 15-30%. Be careful of the term ‘Parfum de Toilette,’ as this may either refer to an Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum. What’s the reason that perfume scents change from the moment we spray to an hour later? The ultimate reason is that perfumes are made of top, middle, and base notes. The top notes are generally what we first smell. These lighter notes are what we initially smell and tend to fade after about 30mins of wear. The middle notes make the general blend and start to develop on the skin over time. These are usually the floral scents. The base notes tend to be the woody and musky scents, which hold the greatest ‘molecular weight.’ These scents are heavier and help the lighter notes last longer. What are the basic fragrances? Fragrances are divided into families of related scents. There are seven major ‘fragrance families’: Greens, Chyypre, Florals, Oriental, Fougere, Tobacco/Leather, and Aldehydics. We’ve all hear of perfumes turning, but what does that really mean? Many commercial perfumes from the most popular brands are said to ‘turn’ after one year of being open. However, if stored at a cool temperature, most perfumes should last several years. Try storing the perfumes in a dark box, and change from a splash bottle to a smaller decanter. Some perfume oil extracts may even better with time. So it just depends on the perfume, the cheaper the perfume the sooner it will turn. J/A 91 STYLES 114

Let the Makeovers Begin!

Lashes lashes! We’ve all seen the gorgeous models and celebrities with fluttery eyelashes and died for a pair for ourselves. Well, it’s not secret that it takes a bucketful of mascara and a set of beautiful falsies. In MFW we saw some extra long lashes (a bit doll-like) at Gucci and Versace,

This fall/winter 2014, the runway was buzzing with new trends, and we’re not talking about clothes or accessories. Hair and make-up is a huge aspect of how the model (or we!) look overall. This season there are plenty of different trends to play around with and try, find what suits you and try to include it somehow in your hair or makeup routine. There’s nothing better than to start fresh in September with some fresh new looks! Here’s what we caught off the runway at fall/winter 2014 fashion week:

but Prada was a bit different with clumpy mascara for a “don’t care” feel. However, In Paris Fashion Week we saw the “no mascara” approach but we don’t know how we feel about that just yet.

Metallic make-up is back stronger than ever, who doesn’t like a splash of gold or bronze on their eyelids? Or why not some silver eye shadow as seen on the Donna eye shadow at Altuzarra too but Emilio Pucci went all out with gold and bronzed out foreheads! Let’s try to keep that last one for Halloween shall we? Bronzed lips were also a hit after being seen at the models on Rodarte’s runway.. SEPHORA Velvet Eyeshadow in Silver Delight [Sephora Stores]

Since eye make-up is what’s on focus this month, a special technique has been used throughout all shows we noticed. The “painted on” technique has all the make-up artist talking. The eye shadow looks like it’s literally painted on the eye, which gives it a stronger effect. We’ve seen this at Dries Van Noten and Burberry too. Lanvin used the same effect but by painting on black eyeliner instead of eye shadow for maximum effect. Christian Dior used that too which brings us to our next make-up trend…

e often make a big production of getting ready in the morning. You try on a few pairs of shoes “Heels or flats? Heels or flats?”… You apply at least eight different cosmetics—and that’s not including toner, serum, and sunscreen— and then drink that green “beauty” smoothie. But when it comes time to hit the hay, it can be difficult to stay upright as you’re brushing your teeth—let alone perform an elaborate nightly beauty routine. The truth is, for some of us, getting our acts together in the evening is much easier than doing so in the morning. That’s why we did you the favor of spilling some of our secrets on how to get gorgeous overnight, Shahla Akbar writes.

TOPSHOP Coral Pink Hair Scrunchie [Topshop Stores]

Soothe dry, cracked heels with moisturizer and warm socks: You may not spend an entire workday running around in fourinch stilettos (or maybe you do), but that doesn’t mean your feet aren’t in need of some relief. Once you’ve slipped into your PJs, apply a foot lotion that contains tea tree, peppermint oil or cocoa butter, then cover with fuzzy socks. The socks help bind the moisture to your feet and you’ll wake up to soft smooth soles. Now all you need is a pair of strappy heels to show them off.

Sleep on a satin pillowcase: Switch up your pillowcase to avoid extra frizz on natural curls, as silky satin is much softer on hair than regular cotton. When you toss and turn at night, your curls can rub up against the fabric, which causes friction and results in morning frizz, so sleeping on a satin pillowcase can reduce static, tangling, and general “roughing up”, and give you shinier silkier morning locks. Sleeping on cotton can also give you horrible pillow creases on your face—which can eventually lead up to premature wrinkling— and you definitely don’t want that.

Instead of settling comfortably into the beginnings of a brilliant career, he opened the pathways to a new vision. He lent his talent to contemporary artists, set about re-creating Marie-Antoinette’s perfume, went back in time to the early 17th century and the sources of perfumery. He He was the first to open his bespoke fragrances atelier, going against the trend of perfume democratization. He has created gigantic olfactory installations in emblematic spaces, making people dream with his ephemeral and spectacular perfumed performances. All this, while continuing to create perfumes for world famous fashion brands and designers, as fresh as ever.. Maison Francis Kurkdjian is a house of fragrance, but also a house of creation. It surrounds itself with the talent of designers, craftsmen, photographers, musicians and set designers. Exceptional know-how come together and echo off each other. Let it all out

Sometimes we are faced with a dilemma, do we tell our friends when they bother us, or do we keep it inside with an intention of not upsetting them? The truth is you are not doing anyone a favor by keeping things in. Your heart is seeking to forgive others always, and any act of not doing so will feel bad as it’s against your true nature. You may not tell them because you care but your view about them will change which is even worse. In the long run you will hurt the relationship and the pain would be ten folds. Anything you feel you should express, best case scenario you will feel better and your friendship becomes stronger, worst case is that they overreact which means they are not a healthy friend to have in the first place, so do both of you a favor and be sure to communicate any negative feelings.

Change your state Smoking is extremely addictive, not only because of the chemicals, but smokers tend to smoke more when they are in need of an immediate change in state. As the smoker inhales, the reactions in his body are changing his body’s chemistry, you can do the same without any health risks. Find your state changers, whether it be a little dance to a song or a quick shower, changing your state will change your mood. Find what works best for you and you will find your healthy addiction

Laugh out loud The benefits of laughter can literally enhance your life. Not only your state of mind but almost every organ in the body. Don’t wait for someone to make you laugh, actually intend to laugh during the day and look for things that amuse you. The happiness you will find will most certainly improve all areas of your life. If you don’t manage to find something hilarious, try laughing for no reason and you will end up laughing at yourself. There are many spiritual rituals that involve fake laughter.

Power pose Watch your body language, then try noticing the people around you. You will surely find a trend between how successful people are generally at life with how they move. Research shows that even people with low confidence have the ability to gain immediate power by standing in a power position, the classic is the Wonder Woman pose. Ten seconds in any power position will ignite a hormone reaction that will make you feel dominant in any situation. Try it! Notice how you are sitting now, now straighten yourself, lift your head up, take a deep breath and dominate your surroundings. Try implementing this body language at work and feel the difference in how you carry yourself.

Eyes on the prize When was the last time you envisioned your perfect future that you are working towards? The one characteristic common between all achievers is their vision. They all know exactly what they want. Knowing why you want something is much more important than figuring out how you need to achieve it. The “Why?” is the force that motivates you, whenever you find your life becoming stressful, be sure it’s because you took your eyes off the prize. They say motivation is like showering, doesn’t last long but that’s why it’s recommended daily! J/A 91 STYLES 132

ndoubtedly the most sought after fashion destination in the world, the city of lights attracts millions of tourists per year, some of whom are the crème de la crème of the fashion industry. With a wide range of culture, history, and architectural significance, it is no wonder that Paris is the hub for trend and fashion. One of the most interesting places to see in Paris is the flea market. This gem of a destination has gained extreme popularity over the years as fashionistas have discovered that they can purchase major labels at half price! Whether you’re looking for vintage Chanel or simply wanting a good bargain, the flea market is an absolute must! Saint-Honoré is by far the most expensive of fashion streets in Paris, everything from Christian Louboutin to John Galliano is on this picturesque road. And if you love Chanel, then you have to see the original boutique on Rue Cambon. It’s quite amazing to know that Coco Chanel herself used to design above this store years ago. For more eccentric and affordable finds head to Le Marais where there are both known boutiques and pop up shops boasting beautiful fabrics and clothing. For the Louis Vuitton lover, the store on George V is probably the most impressive and extravagant of all the stores worldwide. I remember once seeing a line around the corner just to go in! Although Champs Elysées may not be as high-end as it once was, there are still many nice boutiques on the side streets. In fact Avenue Montaigne still has some of the best high fashion out there. Montaigne Market has a wide range of designers and haute couture and is a great pit stop for someone who wants access to all the designers but doesn’t have a lot of time.

Lyon

T

his UNESCO World Heritage site is a beautiful destination halfway between Paris and Marseilles. The city has its roots in a Romanesque heritage that has left lovely architectural masterpieces and over 30 museums to celebrate the vast history. Interestingly enough, Lyon happens to be the world’s gastronomy capital and is renowned for a wide array of cuisines with over 1,000 restaurants. Most recently, Lyon has begun rivaling Paris as a fashion destination. Some of the best couturiers reside in this city such as Lejaby, Lise Charmel, Zilli, Nathalie Chaize, Max Chaoul, and Azuleros. These designers have not only put Lyon on the map as a fashion destination, they have also set a trend for the direction French fashion will be moving forward in the next decade. The place to shop is the Carré d’Or district, and in fact, one of Europe’s largest pedestrian shopping centers is located between Rue de la République and Rue Victor Hugo. Throughout the city you will most certainly notice the elegance and poise of the young Lyonnais women who take time to make sure they are a good representation of the fashion culture. While sight seeing in Lyon, make sure to see the Notre-Dame Fourviere Basilica which is an architectural masterpiece created by Bossan in the 1800s. It has 4 octagonal towers and because of the positioning it’s known as the ‘upside down elephant.’ Just around Fourvière Hill, there are some lovely little shops where you can find local craftsmanship and possibly something unique to Lyon. Another beautiful site to visit is the Lumière Institute, which is located at the factory where Cinematography was invented in 1895.

his gorgeous city in the South of France is rapidly growing into one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Montpellier is located a few kilometers inland from the French Riviera and is known for its ancient academic roots. Since the 12th century Montpellier has been a safe haven for people of all creeds and religious backgrounds to teach medicine. As a result the Faculté de Médecine was created as the first operating medical school in the Western world. Currently, a quarter of the city’s population consists of students. Because of the city’s youth the Place de la Comédie has grown to a large pedestrian area with numerous restaurants and street performers. Along with the entertainment is a large shopping district starting from la Comédie to Rue de la Loge. This area has the best shopping in the city and consists of tons of high end and low-end boutiques. For something a bit more interesting, Rue de L’Aiguillerie has tons of ethnic boutiques and even has some circus and magic stores! The Polygone mall is also a great place for name brands like Galleries Lafayettes. From the mall you can walk to the riverside for an array of restaurants and lounges. If you’re a foodie then head to Les Halles Castellane. This covered market sells all sorts of foods and drinks and has some of the best French cheeses you can dream of. Take a walk from the Rue Roch to the Arc de Triomphe where you will find the royal square, called Promenade de Peyrou. This area not only has a beautiful view, but also has some lovely shops with ornate pieces of jewelry and furniture. Nearby you will also find one of the oldest botanical gardens and an ancient aqueduct.

rance’s 4th largest city, Toulouse is not only ‘La Ville Rose,’ it is a major fashion city. Surprisingly the city has always been at the cutting edge of fashion and has served as the birthplace of many major brands, including The Kooples, Le Comptoir des Cotonniers, Marchand Drapier, 7Robes, and Marc Deloche jewelry. Not only does it have a major clothing industry, it also has a wide range of leather goods and jewelry. If you’re looking for the well known brands go to Rue d’Alsace-Lorraine and Rue SaintRome for ready to wear clothing, accessories and even cosmetics. For those with a more urban taste, you can take your hats, sweaters, and shirts to Rue Cujas, Rue des Flatiers, and Rue des Tourneurs for a wide range of street-wear stores that will decorate and take your pieces to the next level. On the flip side, for those seeking high end and pure couture, Rue des Arts, Rue Boulbonne, and Rue Croix-Baragnon are great for attaining pieces from the best designers in the fashion world. Place Victor Hugo and Place Saint-Georges are also great for upcoming names in haute couture. If you have time, you can have a custom made dress created for you on these streets by new up and coming couturiers. Toulouse is also very well known for vintage stores. Fashion lovers from all over France come here to Place de la Bourse, Sainte-Ursule, and Peyrolieres to seek out hard to find pieces in the famous second hand shops. So if you’ve been looking for that vintage Dior bag circa 1968, look no further. These shops will be sure to carry any item your heart desires!

In His Shoes

What qualities does he look for in a woman? by Yalda Golsharifi

Rule Number 1 What your man needs from you more than anything else, is to recharge his batteries. That means listening to all his issues, allowing him to release all his stress, then backing up his plans for the near future. It’s never about what you do, but always how you make him feel! If after spending time with you he feels refreshed and ready to take on the world, then you have done your job!

Cook from the heart! Nothing says love more than the language understood by his stomach! Even the simplest meals prepared by you without him expecting would make all the difference. Don’t do it because he’s hungry or when nobody else is available, do it for the sheer joy of pleasing his appetite with something he deserves. Wait till you see his reaction, you may find yourself in the kitchen more than you expect.

Be his Advocate Men have achievement on the top of their minds always. They need to accomplish and they need to win, their competitive nature and alpha male tendencies play a big role in their day to day life. Anything you can do to support his daily triumphs will show him how beneficial you are in his life. Whether its helping him look better, feel better or even aiding him in any of his tasks. Help him keep his eyes on the prize and you will be his most valuable possession.

Be a time saver not a time waster! He may love to spend time with you, but if arranging to do so will take too much effort, be sure these efforts will go elsewhere. If you feel like having time alone or eating out, plan something exciting for you both, something he will enjoy and all he would have to do is show up. This will take all that stress off him as well as help him relieve tension by getting his mind off what usually keeps him busy. But he better learn from your planning skills and take over this task when it comes to special occasions.

Show him the way to your heart We can all agree men and women speak different languages, they will never understand what upsets us or what we cherish most. Usually that’s due to our expectations of him becoming a psychic and figuring it out for himself. The truth is you need to get the ball rolling, by giving him extra credit when he does get it right as well as expressing what you would love from him. Express your goals and dreams to him as well as all the things you would love to own. Giving him a list to choose from will get a better result that him stressing and trying to be creative. After a while even your list is unnecessary and he will be able to figure out what you love and exceed your expectations. Sept 92 STYLES 145

IWC Schaffhausen Pays Tribute To Saint-Exupéry’s Last Flight Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “The Last Flight”” Seventy years ago, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry took off on a reconnaissance flight over France and never returned. Now, IWC Schaffhausen commemorates the last flight of the celebrated pilot and author with three special limited editions, thereby strengthening its long-standing partnership with Saint-Exupéry’s descendants. This year, the Schaffhausen-based watch manufacturer marks the 70th anniversary of Saint-Exupéry’s last flight with three special editions featuring silicon nitride ceramic cases: the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “The Last Flight” is available with a crown and push-buttons in titanium, red gold or platinum, each in a limited series. A Tradition of Commitment to Social Causes In November, Sotheby’s Geneva will auction one of the platinum models. As on many occasions in the past, IWC will donate the entire proceeds to the Antoine de Saint- Exupéry Youth Foundation, which champions the great Frenchman’s humanitarian philosophy and is involved in projects aimed at improving literacy among children and young people across the world. On this occasion, the money is destined for the Hospital Pequeno Príncipe in Curitiba. Brazil’s largest children’s hospital is a respected centre specializing in highly complex heart operations, organ and bone transplants and cancer treatment, and is able to count on the help of over 500 volunteers. Thanks to IWC’s contribution, the hospital’s recreational area will soon have a library to offer its young patients. Access to good literature should encourage them to take pleasure in reading and culture, and to find a constructive way of spending their free time. A Watch to Commemorate the Final Flight Since the very first one, all IWC special editions in honor of the legendary Antoine de SaintExupéry have featured the same tobacco color as the flying suit he used to wear. While this elegant color was restricted to the dial in earlier models, the new Pilot’s Watches in “The Last Flight” Chronograph Edition are much more consistent, with a brown ceramic case made from silicon nitride, a brown dial and a calfskin strap in the same color. The titanium push-buttons, crown and case back provide a pleasing contrast on the 1,700 pieces in the limited edition (Ref. IW388004), a further 170 watches (Ref. IW388006) have eye-catching red gold highlights and 17 timepieces (Ref. IW388005) feature a crown, buttons and case back in platinum. The rugged case, made of high-performance ceramic silicon nitride, has several outstanding properties such as enormous heat resistance, unusual hardness, corrosion resistance and very low wear and tear. The sense of quality emanated by this model is underscored by the elaborate sun-pattern finish on the dial. The sapphire glass has an antireflective coating on both sides and is secured against drops in air pressure, while the case is water-resistant to 6 bar. Developed and manufactured by IWC entirely in Schaffhausen, the 89361 caliber is a technical masterpiece. Stop times up to 12 hours are clearly displayed on an analogue hour and minute counter on a sub dial. The back of the watch is engraved with a special image which commemorates the 70th anniversary of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s last flight. The timepiece itself is packaged in a leather case em¬bossed with the same motif as the exquisite engraving on the case back, and is accompanied by a rotor-shaped letter opener in stainless steel. The two models, with crown and push-buttons in precious metals, also come with a print by French artist Manolo Chrétien on duraluminium in a brown leather frame.

New BMW X4 Sports Activity Coupé Expands BMW’s X Model Range in Kuwait Fifteen years ago the automotive landscape changed when BMW introduced the Sports Activity Vehicle with the launch of the X5 in 1999. What started as a single model has spawned an entire X range comprising the BMW X1, X3, X5, X5 M, X6 and X6 M variants; and now these successful models will be joined by the all new BMW X4. During its launch at the Ali Alghanim & Sons Automotive’s BMW showroom, the first-ever BMW X4’s character was unleashed at the BMW X display area in the presence of distinguished members of the media who were invited to the event. “We are extremely proud to present another pioneering concept and design from the BMW X family,” said Yousuf Al Qatami, General Manager of Ali Alghanim & Sons Automotive. “The new BMW X4 stands out from the crowd with its striking design that makes a statement. Visually, the new BMW X4 combines impressive sports car performance and Sports Activity Vehicle versatility with the elegance of a coupé. The BMW X4 will be available with two powerful engines, all with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.
