Editor’s Tips & Picks

Were you ever in the middle of curling your hair in the morning and you suddenly hit your neck with the curling iron? Yup, we’ve all been there. Quick solution? Dab some toothpaste on it to cool it down. After, apply Bio-Oil daily to get rid of the scar if there is one. ALEXANDER WANG Parental Advisory Mesh and Jersey Sweatshirt [net-a-porter.com]

Based on the D4, the D4S responds more completely to the demands of professional photographers with revisions to a number of features and functions, including AF performance, image quality, workflow and operation, and movie recording, adopted after running a variety of simulations of the functions required by professional photographers who sometimes find themselves working under quite severe conditions.

Ciao Italia! The city that brought us Armani, Versace, and so many others. This season the Italians are teasing us with trends and colors. Where do we start? Red is a big hit with Valentino, Dolce and Gabbana and Giorgio Armani. From gowns to lace shirts to shoes. Let’s take a second and thank Roberto Cavalli for having THE most gorgeous recognizable prints ever. You can never go wrong with a Cavalli handbag. Speaking of handbags, we’re crushing on the Moschino white leather tote with the most exquisite gold detail. Finally, what’s Italian fashion without something in gold from Versace? Mystery, allure and class is back. To put it in a different context: sheer, lace and black is back! Starting with Balmain’s sheer black fitted dress to Chloe’s silk organza shirt, this trend is taking over the streets and runways. Looking for a party dress? Look no more; Simone Roche’s transparent black and white floral dress is the way to go. Pair it with a pair of killer red Louboutins and a hint of Mac’s Ruby Woo lipstick and you’re good to go. Needing something more on the casual side? Topshop’s leather look tee with a sheer panel is perfect when channeling this trend.

Palazzo pants are back! Finally, something comfortable and stylish at the same time. Some might argue that these pants are hard to wear. On the contrary, they are the easiest when you come to style them. When we see these leggy models wearing them we are in awe at the sight of how long their legs look in these, personally, we used to think we couldn’t pull it off, but here’s how to wear them: Almost always, you’ll need to pair your pants with killer high heels or extremely high wedges to achieve the perfect palazzo effect. Another thing to think about, always wear a tight top with them as they are loose and you need to balance it out.

Florals for spring? Groundbreaking we know. However, each season designers play around with the trend to change it up a bit to impress us. Are we impressed? We most definitely are! 3D florals are the new it thing. Who’s doing it? Phillip Lim, Christian Siriano and Marchesa. Who’s wearing it? Anyone who’s anyone is! Mira Duma, Blake Lively, and even young Kendall Jenner. This trend is very easy to work with, choose an extravagant piece to wear with 3D florals and keep the rest simple. This season it is all about art and self-expression. Our selected piece is the gorgeous blue Prada face mural tote that made a presence on the runway this Spring/Summer 2014. It is the same concept as the original Prada tote, but Miuccia made sure to surprise is with the gorgeous art on it. This handbag is literally a piece of art! It can be worn day or night, with your casual attire or even for a night out, it all depends on how you style it! It really is the handbag of the season. Mar 87 STYLES 46

Spring/Summer 2014 Collection Chanel spring/summer 2014 collection brought art to life with a array of colors and brush strokes on new takes of Chanel’s signature silhouette pieces. A color palette that played between raspberry, bubble-gum pink, black and white, as well a multitude of rainbow hues in brush stroke prints on intricate pleated fabric that fluttered as models cascaded down the runway. A new selection of Chanel shoes – socks included graced the catwalk! As well as Karl’s favorite piece “My favorite thing is the new necklace like an earphone, it’s two huge pearls, but in fact it’s very flattering because the huge pearls give a beautiful light on the girl’s face.” Karl Lagerfeld.

Spring/Summer 2014 Collection 21st Century Versace – new ease, rock energy, effortless luxury. The richness of Versace meets the attitude of the street, creating a fresh reality for day, and a powerful statement at night. Denim and leather jackets are the new blazer, while raffia skirts have liberating volume. Bands of elastic create structure in skirts, and cling to the body in shorts and tops. Cutaway waistcoats give freedom and a looser contrast. The T-shirt is redefined as a luxury item, especially in Versace floral prints. Heavy metal T-shirt prints imagine that Versace is on its 2014 world tour. The Versace hook-and-eye fastens blousons, and provocatively holds together slashes in jackets and dresses that reveal the body beneath. Triangles of metal mesh give the effect of bandanas at the neck. There’s also a metal mesh T-shirt dress, and metal mesh falls from a gown like a scarf. Chain Medusa harnesses are the new accessory for day, and toughen up tulle dresses for night. A new bag – The Palazzo – is totally unstructured, and can be rolled up and held in the hand. Platform sandals have bands of elastic as straps.

Spring/Summer 2014Collection Prada’s spring/summer 2014 women’s collection presents “In the Heart of the Multitude”, a new project in the long tradition of creative collaborations. Prada invited muralists Miles “El Mac” MacGregor, Mesa, Gabriel Specter and Stinkfish, and illustrators Jeanne Detallante and Pierre Mornet to engage themes of femininity, representation, power and multiplicity on the walls of the show space. Dresses, coats and accessories came alive with giant mural prints of female faces, layering contrasting dimensions of femininity. Glossy side partings are crowned with feathered headpieces, and sporty tube socks encrusted with candy-like crystals. Handbags are ladylike in the extreme, in glossy crocodile, studs, and saffiano leather.

Spring/Summer 2014 Collection For spring/summer 2014 Mulberry revisits the style attitude ‘Le Style Anglais’ with its laid back interpretation of heritage luxury. The new season is both town and country: the collection was influenced by modernist overtones from Sixties London juxtaposed with the opulence of a quintessential English country house and gardens. In its style and attitude the collection embraced both familiarity and modernity, working with classic prints and textures reinterpreted to create new season signatures imbued with Mulberry’s inherent British wit.

It is the Brand’s first extensive ready-to-wear collection, and the first ever runway show, which was held in Milan in September 2013. The collection for women, called “Italian Set”, now features beautiful dresses, capes, and shirts in luxurious, butter-soft leather, and natural cotton, as well as the comprehensive range of elegant and distinctive shoes, bags and accessories that have become the hallmark of Tod’s. Made in Italy, which has always been the cornerstone of the Brand’s DNA, is now applied to daywear, interpreted by Facchinetti to echo the clean lines and the tribute to saddlery that is always evident in Tod’s leather goods. Feminine fitted cropped leather biker jackets are sure to become instant classics, while flowing leather skirts and fluid leather dresses add an understated luxurious glamour. For spring/summer 2014, the Ready-to-Wear Collection incorporates the Signature pattern into its design, which here has been reimagined to feature perforations, suggesting a degree of subtle transparency. Soft and elegant, the range includes a short and a long leather skirt, a leather T-shirt, a cotton shirt, dress and skirt. Simple clean cotton and georgette dresses, and classic cotton shirts complete the look and complement the unfussy accessories that constitute the foundation of the Tod’s look.

Spring/Summer 2014 Collection Moschino’s spring/summer 2014 celebrated its 30th anniversary by revealing archive looks down the catwalk under the title “For Fashion Victims Only’. The vintage hit pieces like the retro logo-emblazoned dresses and heritage prints were modeled by Moschino’s original muses, Pat Cleveland, Violetta Sanchez, Jodie Kidd, Erin O’Connor and Gisele Zelauy. Even the crazy teddy bear dress and hat from 1989 made a comeback. Following the flashback, models walked down the runway in twos following the theme of GoodGirl/BadGirl.

Spring/Summer 2014 Collection Precise tailoring emphasizes a lightness of fabric, the collection has a dual origin embodied by purity and sensuality. The minimalist lines and perfect structures are softened by the quest for volume; the detailing is multiplied to create new equilibriums. The result is a series of opposing effects – straight lines and curves, light contracted by shade and density by transparency. Lines are well defined: precise jackets and trousers; generous and geometric coats complemented by form fitting belts and bodices; cut-off blazers and little volumetric blousons that reveal and highlight the waist. The silhouette is ethereal and sensual: Basque laces dot the back of the Spencer and embellish the field jacket; bands are fastened around the waist; the back of a large trench coat appears to dematerialize before your eyes. An experiment in which rigor is crossed with seduction: brassieres are inserted into tops and shirts; large, functional pockets are applied to trousers.

Spring/Summer 2014 Collection Let there be light. With sequins, brocade and pleated technical fabrics, the Lanvin Spring/ Summer 2014 collection sparkles and shines in a season where coolers become magnetic and fabrics - washed lamé, glimmering weaves, gold boutis piqué - impersonate the sun itself, by night as well as day. Material radiates energy, whether crumpled, pleated, smocked, treated or iridescent. Layers of tulle take on a star shape, asphalt-colored lamé crackles like lightning. A violet-blue taffeta jacket over a royal blue satin skirt and a “Dream” t-shirt sets the tone. An Art Déco galaxy explodes as easy wear and sophisticated lines meld into a wealth of details. The Lanvin magic and the euphoria of the roaring Twenties combine to create long dresses in gold lamé like so many halos, graphic dresses created with layers of pleats and back grosgrain ribbons, chains studded with a giant star, heart cabochon belts dotted with crystals... Holding their lamé leather “paper bag”, the heroines of Summer 2014 stride through the city as couture glam rock heroines. This is a story of contrasts, a high-octane season where a double-breasted biker in gold leopard meets a diamanté tulle skirt, and where sparkle is omnipresent, from “medal” chiffon dresses to metallic python pumps, black remaining the perfect partner for white. The silhouette resembles a single perfectly calligraphed line. Invisible scissors slice through technical jersey foam and create a column of light from a black and white dress. As woman and diamond meet, Lanvin reveals each one of their thousand and one facets.

Spring/Summer 2014 ‘Charmed Bloom’ Collection Embraced by the charming splendor of flowers, this season Poca & Poca takes its inspiration from these emblematic blooms which symbolize femininity and natural beauty. These two values are portrayed in the Spring/Summer 2014 collection combining the flowers’ magnificence and grace. Creating an atmosphere of lady-like elegance and charm, the collection appears to be of an ethereal romantic nature, a refined approach to fashion using the freshest summer colours and designs some inspired from one of nature’s most majestic of creatures, the butterfly. In using sumptuous satin and silks, teamed with luxurious tulle, Poca & Poca propels its beautiful and feminine silhouettes which have become the trademark of the brand’s collection. From bubble blouses to volume skirts and high waist pants, as well as the season’s must-have capes and long dresses; all these glamorous pieces embody a wonder of enchantment, a characteristic synonymous with Poca & Poca. The collection highlights the lush and opulent surroundings of flowers, through the use of rich tones of yellows, pinks, blues and highlights of gold, with hints of nude and lilac, allowing a sense of strength and warmth to reign. Established in 2010 by Kuwaiti national, Sara N. Al-Ateeqi, Qumar 14 produces a mix of kaftans, bishts, dresses, bags, home items, and more. This spring, Qumar 14 has transformed an everyday item, sweaters, into a unique, one-of-a-kind fashion statement. Urban style goes bohemian this spring with a collection full of playful and personal style. Snug patchwork jackets of leather and suede modernise the look, and graphic-printed waisted jackets give a more sculptured silhouette. Delicate cotton voile dresses have vintage dreaminess and graphic-print dresses are covered in fortune teller symbols for a sense of city mysticism. This bohemian feeling continues in to the woman’s accessory wardrobe where big jewellery and belts with mystical elements integrate perfectly with the clothes. Thigh-high stretch suede boots show that flats have attitude and to finish the look fake fur waistcoats are the season’s essential.

Carlo Barberis

An Italian Odyssey Carlo Barberis was first established in Italy in 1929 by the young designer himself. His company was attributed the trademark Nr 39, which is today the oldest in Valenza. His talent and refined taste in jewelry won him many loyal customers and word spread of his designs. Soon after his marriage in 1940, his wife Valeria also started contributing to the creative side of the business, and stood out for her sparkling imagination and use of vibrantly colored stones. After a few decades, their son Gianni, who was a trained gemologist, joined the company and took it to new heights. Maurise Les Classiques Tradition Timeless design and first-class handiwork characterize the quality of the Swiss watchmaker’s art: this is proven by the new timepieces in pink gold in the Les Classiques Tradition collection, a sub-collection of the Classiques models that have already been established for many years. Their sober, compelling appearance manifests respect for the centuriesold tradition of craftsmanship. Their restrained elegance, highlighted in particular by the slim case and simple beauty of the dial, emphasizes the quality that these models display on their wearers’ wrists. The delicate hours, minutes and seconds hands in this classically elegant setting, plated with rhodium or pink gold, concentrate on the essential: the time. The only additional feature is the understated date display at 6 o’clock. Then there is the automatic caliber ML 155/ ML 132, with its precision and its slim case, tokens of reliability and classical and modern styling in equal measure, which can be examined in detail, thanks to its domed sapphire crystal case back. The decoration, in the highest traditions of craftsmanship – the weight with Côtes de Genève, the bridges with circular-graining and the gold- or rhodium-plated rotor – are a delight to the eye. Les Classiques Tradition, with these new models, is a collection that symbolizes the refined harmony of Swiss quality and style.

Fendi Hermes Arceau H Cube

Fendi Chameleon Enamel Dual Color

There are some materials whose striking simplicity represents a rich source of inspiration for craftsmen. One of these is straw. Used in miniature marquetry, it adorns the dial of the Arceau watch with an iconic motif in bright colors.

A timelessly beautiful watch, the Chameleon offers a modern and innovative take on time. The Italian-styled, Swiss-made Chameleon watches feature elongated rectangular cases, curved at the top and bottom for feminine appeal. The bottom of the seductive case features the iconic Fendi signature, allowing the strap color beneath to show through – adding depth and character.

Straw is an extraordinary material: a long, smooth rye stem, from which the usable parts have been patiently selected. The plant, which is a variety cultivated on a single farm, is delicately scythed by hand and then dyed through. Successive baths followed by drying reveal brilliant and profound colors’ with subtle highlights. Combining the colors, shades and direction of the fibers of each strand, the craftsman patterns the straw marquetry that will constitute the dial of the watch. With infinite precision, he cuts each piece and assembles them one by one in an unimaginably small space, reproducing the tricks of perspective that characterize the H Cube motif – designed, like the Arceau watch, by Henri d’Origny. This geometric view, emphasized by a white gold case featuring a diameter of 41 mm and asymmetrical attachments, is powered by an H1837 Manufacture movement that can be seen through the sapphire crystal case back.

The new Dual-Color pieces are bold statements of confidence and fashion. Each watch in this series features two different colored lustrous enamel inserts. These inserts bring a decidedly individual look to the piece. Fendi offers a host of enticing color combinations. The two-color enamel inserts bring ever more versatility, complexity and personality to the Chameleon and to the discerning woman who wears it. Each Chameleon Enamel Dual Color watch is offered with a black or white lacquered dial, or a champagne sunray dial. Each dial is set with two genuine diamonds. The leather straps for this series are created using the same supple leather as the Chameleon bags. The luxurious couture collection is created in either a gold-colored case, or a stainless steel ergonomically curved case to fit the wrist with sleek appeal and comfort. The brand offers the Dual-Color series in two sizes. The lovely leaf hands offer added femininity. The Chameleon Enamel Dual Color watch, like its name implies, is a modern and colorful watch that move with style from morning to night – for business or pleasure. Mar 87 STYLES 85

here are a number of bloggers known worldwide for their sense of fashion, adventure and of course the incredible food they eat. Fashion bloggers are known for having a unique sense of style. There is no history on this subject as it’s quite new. Fashion bloggers are literally creating history! A fashion blogger you cannot fail to recognize is Chiara Ferragni. With over 2 million followers on Instagram and a successful blog labeled “The Blonde Salad” with one million different visitors monthly, Chiara has taken the fashion world by a storm, Rawan Qabazard writes.

Mar 87 STYLES 92

Ferragni, born in the year 1987 in Italy is currently a full time law student at Bocconi University. However, she is mostly known for being a fashion blogger and designer too. She started her blog “The Blonde Salad” in October 2009 and it has been getting more publicity ever since. She has been featured in many editorials in all types of magazines such as Vogue and Harpers Bazaar. Chiara had achieved global recognition for her blog in over a year, and we totally get it! We wake up every morning, check our Instagram feed to find out what this girl has been up to. From New York Fashion Week to Sao Paulo to London for a photo-shoot to Los Angeles for a designer collaboration, Chiara doesn’t stop surprising us with her projects. What amazes us is how she has all this documented in photos in her blog and Instagram with full “Outfit of the Day” posts and much more. Chiara’s unique fashion sense is what gave her the opportunities she has been offered throughout her fashion career path. Keep in mind our beloved blogger is still studying to be a lawyer; she’s an inspiration to all of us! As her blog became known worldwide Chiara got many offers to model and she went for it. She was a model and also spokesperson for Guess staring from November 2013, and that was a huge jump for her from being a blogger but she handled it well and we were amazed at the results. Chiara has a shoe line, which she has gained a lot of publicity from because to be honest, they are adorable! Other than that she had collaborated with many high-end brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Christian Dior and others such as Tommy Hilfiger, 7 for all Mankind, and J Brand. In December 2013, Chiara and Steve Madden got together to create an amazing 9-shoe collection for Spring 2014, they started selling last month and people can’t stop raving about them. Enough about the fashion side of things, this fashion blogger’s got the 2 B’s! Beauty and brains. In December 2013, Chiara released an eBook with the title “The Blonde Salad” after her blog and it was in Italian. The book is filled with fashion advice and style tips from Chiara and we cannot wait for the English version to come out. Chiara Ferragni is definitely the blogger to follow and watch! Food, travel, photography, and most importantly fashion, is what she lives for. Mar 87 STYLES 93

After completing the course, Ferragamo decided to open his first store in his parent’s home. Realizing that his opportunities were limited in his small hometown, young Salvatore immigrated to Boston in 1914. There, he joined his brother in a cowboy boot factory for a short period, and later convinced his brother to move with him to California. Yasmin Tavakoli writes. The first shop he opened in Hollywood was primarily for shoe repair and madeto-measure shoes. Soon after the opening, celebrities began flooding in wanting shoes for their feature films. Salvatore became a famed shoe designer for the stars and had a long career in cinema design. Though the fame was vast, Ferragamo’s thirst for design went beyond just cinema. He didn’t want to remain merely a ‘shoemaker to the stars’; he wanted to design a beautiful shoe, which would also be comfortable to wear. Ferragamo decided to study anatomy at the University of Southern California to try to understand how he could perfect comfort Mar 87 STYLES 94

in his designs. Finally, after 13 years in the U.S, he returned to Italy in 1927. Settling in Florence, Salvatore began selling his designs to the most rich and powerful women of the century. From Marilyn Monroe to Eva Peron, everyone was a fan of his shoes! Realizing his gift for women’s footwear, Ferragamo opened a workshop on Via Mannelli and began concentrating on experimentation with design. He began applying for patents for ornamental and utility models and other shoe related inventions. Using his scientific approach, he created the ‘Wedge Heel’ as well as the ‘Cage Heel.’ Although Ferragamo struggled with mismanagement of his company and had to file for bankruptcy in 1933, he was able to expand his operation in the 1950s with a workforce of over 700 expert shoemakers that created 350 pairs of handmade shoes daily. Not only was Ferragamo able to create elegant and traditional designs, he was also famed for his striking bizarre inventions and creations. His company later expanded to include luxury shoes, purses, eyewear, accessories, watches, clothing, and perfumes. He has served as a major inspiration to footwear designers of his time and beyond and remains to be one of the most renowned designers of all time.

After his death in 1960, his wife and children took over the company and continued to build the family name. Ferragamo’s eldest daughter also had a knack for design and followed in her father’s footsteps creating the ‘Vara Pump’ in 1978. In 1995, a museum dedicated to Ferragamo’s life and work opened in Palazzo Spini Feroni, an area that had been bought by Ferragamo in the 1930s. Most recently, the brand launched a foundation for young talents in Florence and offers curriculum teaching the values and techniques used by the famous designer.

Refresh Your Wardrobe with Eve Thomas

Summer has arrived. Not literally but just take a glance at any boutique and it would leave you under the impression that we are in the midst of a heat wave. However, you’ll come to know that in the fashion world now is the time to prep your wardrobe for the new season. With ever new fashion cycle comes new trends, and it can get a little overwhelming trying to sort through what’s in and what’s out. Luckily Eve Thomas, Styling Director at The Outnet has done the research for you, so you can focus on other things, like shopping these must-have trends for summer.

Pleats Pleats make a long-awaited return this season. Delicate knife pleats are key, as seen at Celine and Proenza Schouler. A pleated midi-length skirt looks effortless when paired with an oversized sweatshirt and sharp heels.

Art Prints Arty prints make a splash this season. From Pollock-inspired prints at Celine and Pucci to bright primary colors at Chanel, it’s all about having fun with bold, modern strokes. Pair a printed skirt or pants with a white cotton shirt and add interest with colorful accessories – pick one of the colors within the print to play on.

Silver Metallics were popular on the runway this season, notably at Lanvin, but silver shone through as the key shade. Consider it a neutral and incorporate it into a minimalist silhouette for a modern look that works for day.

Ethnic Embroidery Valentino, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana and Pucci all showed beautiful, bright embroidery with an ethnic twist. The oversized proportions of embroidery this season lend it a contemporary edge, working best on a clean silhouette. An embroidered shift dress is an instant outfit solution simply pair it with leather sandals.

Spots are the new stripes! Incorporating a polka-dot piece into your look is an easy way to nod to fashion’s on-going love affair with all things monochrome. Wear a spotty top as you would a stripy tee and consider it a fashion basic. Look to Burberry, Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen for inspiration. IRIS & INK Silk Shirt [theoutnet.com]

Florals

Floral prints are a summer perennial. Florals are given an update this season – bold blooms in colorful hues and jumbo petal cutouts will be key for SS14. Christopher Kane’s SS14 collection illustrated the modernity of this trend perfectly.

Pastels Soft, sherbet shades are here to stay. From ice blue to baby pink and lemon yellow, SS14 is all about candyfloss colors. Mix it up and wear several shades together as seen at Peter Pilotto and Jonathan Saunders, or pair with white and grey marl for a sportier take on the trend.

Sheer Sheer fabrics, as seen at J.W.Anderson and Balenciaga, are sure to make an impact on after-dark dressing this season. Look for cocktail dresses with panels of sheer fabrics, such as organza, and team with bare legs and stiletto heels for a glamorous look.

Lace From crochet at Chloé to patchwork lace panels at Stella McCartney and classic Italian lace at Valentino, there is only one fabric to be seen in this summer. Consider the LLD (little lace dress) your summer go-to. A lace skirt is another key piece which will instantly update your wardrobe for the new season.

Cameron Silver The King of Decades

Cameron Silver is an American fashion historian and founder of LA based vintage salon, Decades. We had the opportunity to meet Cameron at his book signing for his first book Decades: A Century of Fashion during 4Concept Store’s on 6th Street event

I believe triggered something at the time. Although I was so young there was something about the vivacity. I think that’s why today I’m so drawn to vivid colors, patterns and prints. S: How do you define vintage?

Styles: How did your passion for vintage clothing begin? Cameron Silver: I have always loved history and fashion and it is just sort of a natural admiration in me. I loved the fact that fashion can explain so much about what happens in the world. If we think about clothes today, it really represents the mood of the past. Also, I like to shop, so it’s nice to shop and buy things that have a sense of history and that can tell a story. S: What are your earliest memories towards fashion? CS: My earliest memory of fashion for me would be when Woody Allen’s film Annie Hall came out and how Diane Keaton was styled in a kind of masculine attire in khakis with a shirt, tie and a fedora. Another early memory of fashion for me would be going to South America with my parents when I was three. I really remember the colors and

CS: It keeps changing. So when my store Decades opened nineteen years ago, most of my pieces were from before the 70s. Then 80s fashion became vintage and that’s when it seemed so weird to me because I remembered wearing these clothes. Then after that 90s clothes started coming in. Now, when we look at the beginning of the 21st century around the years 2000 and 2001 a lot of changes took place in the fashion industry. Such as Valentino retirement, and the death of McQueen and Yves Saint Laurent, Galliano stopped designing for Dior, Phoebe Philo left Chloe and Tom Ford stopped designing for Gucci, so those pieces we now look at it in way and what we call Neo Vintage. We can’t strictly define vintage as being 20 or 40 years old. The period that something becomes collectable is so short. If you’re a good consumer and buy intelligently, where pieces you purchase might be valuable in the next 5 or 10 years. We all have to look at our clothes as if we’re curetting a museum.

S: From which decade have you found your most prized possessions? CS: The best and most valuable pieces of clothing would be French Couture from the 50s, post war. Which I believe was the golden age of couture. However, for me personally I like the 70s and I love just great American fashion, for example Halston, that kind of sexy Studio 54 look. It’s not necessarily the most valuable but aesthetically very much my DNA. But then again I like every decade because at the end of the day these pieces are my babies. S: How can we identify a true treasure? CS: There are certain barometers and shortcuts. Obviously an important brand and a great name make good pieces, however there are no guarantees. The pieces might not have a great design. If a garment really signifies the times makes it a indicator for a great piece. For example a creation by Marc Bohan for Dior is great piece but the design could be very ugly. We have a very important piece that just came in to the store, Yves Saint Laurent for Christian Dior Couture from1960 ‘beatnik’ collection which is a an alligator and mink motorcycle jacket. Think

about it, 1960! Most women looked like Jackie Kennedy. It came out in a time when fashion was so conservative and Yves Saint Laurent decided to design this radical jacket for Dior. If we look at current fashion, there are the pieces that became editorially famous. So if you have a dress that was worn on the cover of vogue by so and so, that piece would make quick history. S: Do you see any changes towards vintage since you opened your store Decades in 1997? CS: When I first opened in 1997, it was socially seen as inappropriate to wear something vintage or used. Then Hollywood celebrities started wearing the clothes and people began to realize that this is a way one could standout and look special. This opened up the age range; and our clientele today is so broad ranging from young and old. With regards to the region, I’ve always had such an affinity for the Arab culture. My first two Arab clients who are now my good friend are from Kuwait and the other from Jeddah. They spread the word to the amazing women back in their country and now we have a big clientele base from the gulf. S: Has couture changed over the years compared to what we see on the runways today? CS: Yes. The traditional Haute Couture was much more attainable to women. Now, it’s only offered to an exclusive client base because it’s so expensive. For instance when Coco Chanel returned to fashion in the late 1950s, at the time women from upper middle class could buy Chanel Couture because Ready-to-Wear didn’t exist. Now, you couldn’t even be rich to wear couture, you would most likely have to be a billionaire since the price tag on a Chanel Couture jacket could go up to thousands of euros. I still believe in the tradition I just think its crazy expensive. S: What do you hope to accomplish with your book? CS: It has been the most rewarding thing I’ve done. I’ve gone all over the world for 16 months; to Perth Australia, Dublin, Stockholm, London, Paris, Milan, Rome, and all over America. I love creating this community through the love of fashion and I also want people to look at fashion’s history and realize everything repeats itself. The book is really about looking at the past in a very modern way.

S: In a few words how would you describe your own personal style? CS: Eclectic, iconic and festive. I like to have fun with fashion, I don’t do boring, I don’t do basic and I don’t wear a lot of black. S: Are you wearing any festive pieces right now? CS: Yes. Actually these Afghani pants that I have on right now I just bought them from the souk and they’re over 50 years old. Also, the vest that I’m wearing is made out of vintage fabric.

You know the feeling you get when you look at a label and it reads “Made In Italy”? Well, no matter what brand this item is you’ll definitely feel special wearing it. Cover Story

Italy showed up on the fashion map during the 11th century and continued to thrive until the 16th century. Italy was one of the countries where artistic development was at its peak at the time. Venice, Milan and even Florence were producing luxurious items that people from all over where dying to get their hands on. Why is that? Same reason as us, because of the quality and richness of the fabric and the popularity of Italian fashion. As France grew in this as well, people began to show more importance to French fashion because of all the extravagant designs that were designed for the courtiers of Louis XIV. However, Italy once again gained a huge reputation as one of the great capitals of fashion with brands such as Gucci, Armani and Versace. Italian fashion has been encouraged since the Renaissance since the art Period has reached its peak; it was all about the creations. Fashion was highly influenced by the likes of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Rafael! Big names that have gained a huge popularity even to this day. As art, education, music and finance prospered, fashion became highly and influenced and was recognized worldwide. Florence was Italy’s fashion capital at the time, but then Milan swept in with labels like Versace and Dolce! Italian fashion was considered for the rich, such as France’s Haute Couture. However, when ready-to-wear came out everyone was able to enjoy the luxury of it. Major Fashion houses in Italy include Gucci, Emilio Pucci, Valentino, Prada, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce and Gabbana, House of Missoni, Salvatore Ferragamo, Moschino, Armani, Fendi, Versace. Do we even need to continue? Milan and Rome are considered amongst the top fashion capitals alongside Tokyo, London, Paris, and New York. The main shopping districts there are the Via Montenapoleone fashion district, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, and Via dei Condotti in Rome. Milano Milano! The city that headquarters the biggest names in fashion such as Prada, Dolce, Armani, and Versace. Also it hosts many stores for international labels too. Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer yearly after New York and London, but before Paris. Milan is filled with shopping centers and streets that you can lose yourself in for days at a time. The most watched during Milan Fashion Week are the bloggers, photographers, editors, socialites, etc. With their amazing sense of street styling. With the hash tag #streetstyle trending all around the globe, these people try to get as much attention from what they’re wearing as possible. From voluminous gowns with high-tops to feathery numbers with sleek up-dos (hello Anna dello Russo?). These people are the ones to watch when it comes to upcoming trends! Incorporating a bit of Italian fashion into your casual outfits is a must to give your outfit a touch of luxury. Now Milan doesn’t only host fashion week for women’s-wear, there’s also men’s fashion week. Italian men have always had a unique sense of style that distinguished them from other European men. Every January and June, designers showcase their newest collections for men and it’s as popular as with the women! Many cities followed this as it was good for them. Men’s fashion has been growing worldwide and it is certainly reaching a point where it deserves its own glory. Alta Moda Alta Roma! This is considered as one of the major fashion week event in the fashion industry. It is held in Rome Every January and July and it features designers from all over the globe. It is not for everyone, Alta Moda is similar to France’s Haute Couture in a way. The buyers get special treatment as they are buying unique one of a kind pieces that has been worked on individually unlike most ready-to-wear items that are mass produced. Last but not least, the designers that make up 90% of Italian fashion and who have built the reputation for Italy are names that the whole world knows and respects, with each having their own story in how they got into the industry, here’s a bit of each: Mar 87 STYLES 107

HOLLYWOOD

Cover Story

How did they start? Gucci Guccio Gucci was a craftsmen that founded the House of Gucci in the year 1921. It was first a leather saddler shop and his only customers were horseman. Slowly he started selling leather bags and got a reputation for exquisite quality. Soon after he expanded through Rome and outside Italy.

Emilio Pucci Emilio came from a noble family in Florence, he was a skier and his first designs were for the Reed College skiing team. His designs caught everyone’s attention and he received offers from many manufacturers in the US but he set up his Atelier in Capri, Italy.

Prada Miuccia Prada, nicknamed Miu Miu, is the granddaughter of a successful entrepreneur Mario Prada. She and her husband took over the luxury goods manufacturer and it became her fashion house. Or should we say, her empire? The first hit for Miuccia were a line of black nylon handbags that sold out immediately. We’re dying for her to redesign these in our lifetime! “The mirrors reflect a sense of displacement in today’s fashion, a lack of clear vision.” Miuccia Prada Mar 87 STYLES 108

Valentino Valentino Garavani’s love for fashion started since he was young at school. He pursued his ambitions and started styling icons like Countess Jacqueline de Ribes at an early age. He stopped designing but his friend wouldn’t hear of it so he officially set up his Atelier in Rome in the year 1959. His parents were very supportive. Thank god for that, or else we wouldn’t have the option to buy his killer Rockstud high heels! “I Know what women want. They want to be beautiful.” Valentino Garavani

Roberto Cavalli

This start shocked us the most. An Italian hosiery factory first recognized Cavalli’s work when he made flower prints on kit. He was still a student at the time but he was one of the best. He worked for Hermes and Pierre Cardin and also got commissions. After, he opened his first boutique in Saint-Tropez in 1972 where he displayed his designs of printed denim, brocase and his famous wild prints. “I would like the people that buy my clothes to understand that for me it’s one small piece of art.” Roberto Cavalli

House of Missoni

Ottavio Missoni was a sportsman, he and one of his teammates launched an active wear business. His tracksuits had a lot of details and stitching, similar to the designs we see nowadays. In 1948, they designed the Olympic team’s uniform. Ottavio himself was the brains behind the patterns and watercolor paints that the Missoni textiles are famous for. This fashion house has been credited as being the creators of this specific type of garments.

Moschino

Franco Moschino founded his own label “Moschino Couture!” It was only jeans and casual clothes at first then he extended to eveningwear, shoes, perfumes, etc. The Cheap and Chic line came after and it was more affordable. There have been talks that he has copied Chanel’s classic jackets but they became immensely popular. After his death, his legacy remained popular and celebrities like Kylie Minogue still wear his designs.

Giorgio Armani After studying medicine for a while, Giorgio Armani knew that this wasn’t for him and that he had talents elsewhere. He worked as a seller for menswear in a store and later on started designing menswear for the Nino Cerruti Company. Later on, fashion houses asked for him to design collections until he opened his own fashion house and went on to bring us the 7 Armani lines that are available right now for us to enjoy.

Versace

Gianni Versace had built an empire. The name Versace echoes everywhere and everyone knows what it is and what it’s worth. The first boutique opened in Milan in 1978, and was immediately one of the most popular because of the status of the family in the area. After the murder of Gianni, Donatella took over as a Creative Director whilst their older brother Santo became CEO. Gianni had left 50% of the company to his niece, Donatella’s daughter, so therefore Allegra Versace now has the final say about everything to do with the company. It is still a family-owned empire that is continuously growing. “Comfort is very important to me. I think people live better in big houses and in big clothes.” Gianni Versace “I go from a full working day to making sure I am home for dinner with my kids. I couldn’t do that in a 10 cm mini skirt but I am not going to resort to sweatpants and an old t-shirt.” Donatella Versace Mar 87 STYLES 111

Mediterranean Sea region. And finally her latest fragrance Eutopie No.6 was inspired by Russia. Miss Pollet recently moved back to Paris after living in Russia for three and a half years therefore Eutopie No. 6 was created as a homage to the time that she lived there. As a tribute to Russia she chose the colors red and gold for the bottle. For many reasons red is a very strong color in Russian culture. Also, in her opinion red is a very glamorous and striking color and Eutopie No. 6 combines the spirit of the heritage and tradition of Russia as well as the glamorous and dynamic city of Moscow – where she lived. Therefore, she wanted to create the connection of duality and contrast, tradition and modern life as well as masculinity and femininity all within her latest fragrance. The fragrance is woody, spicy, leathery, which reveals the character of the contrast of Russia. It starts with precious woods and varied incense, which develops into leathery, which works with leather scents in all fascists, also flowery with a sweet feminine geranium touch. The base notes contains the Eutopie signatures that are patchouli, cedar wood, musk, and pepperwood, which gives the fragrance a long-lasting sensual touch. Mar 87 STYLES 117

Must-Try Makeup Tips

Foundation

Always choose a shade that matches your skin tone. One of the best areas to test if the color is for your skin is to rub a tester on the inside of your wrist. People tend to go for colors that are too dark for them thus resulting in an orange color to the skin which leave lines and stain clothes. Contouring is a huge trend at the moment and has helped immensely in ensuring makeup matches your skin tone. Never be afraid to ask for a tester as many leading brands have samples to give at large makeup stores. Foundation is also seasonal based on whether you tan a lot or not. In winter, your color will be different to that in summer so ensure to keep that in mind when purchasing foundations.

Bronzer

Bronzer should be used to highlight the cheekbones therefore needs to be applied in the correct way. A good thick brush along with the correct color to match your skin will ensure this perfect look is achieved. Mar 87 STYLES 120

Eyelashes

Every girls dream accessory! Lashes can make us feel more feminine from the moment they are applied. Semi perm lashes are ideal for those lash loving ladies although be warned that they do need maintenance and last for up to 2 months with constant love and care.

Face Powder

In the climate of Kuwait many of us suffer from shiny faces. One of the best solutions is matt powder applied by a brush! This eliminates the shine straight away without adding extra layers of makeup to the face.

Brushes

Always clean your brushes at least once a week in warm soapy water. Make-up brushes should be replaced every 3-6 months depending on usage and it is imperative to ensure they are always clean as can carry bacteria. Always ensure your brush matches the area of your face in which it is designed for.

Of course, her sense of mischief, figure, and eternal adolescence owe a great deal to her genes and her generous soul, but thanks to the Meteorites Blossom Collection, everyone can see it.

K

yu Care Center just got a new address and it’s in the heart of the bustling and rhythmic city of Salmiya. I had the chance to spend a few hours getting pampered from head-to-toe and got to take home a few valuable beauty tips that would help with my daily beauty regime. After nine successful years in the business at their first location in AlJahra, I was interested to discover what their second branch had to offer, Abrar AlZankawi writes. Located on the second floor of Abdul Rahid building in Salmiya, as soon as I walked in I was warmly greeted by the owner, at the same time I took a quick scan of the place. The vibe felt friendly and the sun-drenched atmosphere instantly lifted my mood after a long day of running errands. My experience started by having a tour of the salon, and I’m nowhere near exaggerating when I say this place is big – I take that back it’s huge! The full-fledge beauty center has rooms designated for any beauty treatment that happens to cross your mind. The hair styling station was very spacious with shampoo basins and blow-dry chairs strategically placed. Next, we had a peak into the brightly lit make-up room which was then followed by the nail station area, which in my opinion is the size of a nail salon all on its own. Rows of nail polish options and nail art selections had me in a frenzy. Also, I was excited to see that they had Jacuzzi pedicure massage chairs, which I hardly ever see in salons in Kuwait. Another added bonus for nail enthusiast is that they provide special nail care procedures where no cutting is involved, for individuals that are diabetic or suffer from blood Mar 87 STYLES 124

pressure. Continuing the tour we explored their specialty rooms such as the L’oreal hair care system room, the facial room where Thalgo products are used, the massage room where you can relax or get a slimming wrap and finally the Moroccan scrub area. Ladies, since summer is right around the corner I would really recommend trying out the Moroccan scrub to get rid of winter’s dry skin. If you’re planning on laying out in the sun this summer, the best way to achieve that perfect even tan is to prep your skin with a scrub. Trust me when I say I came out glowing and polished. The scrub was so invigorating I felt like I have achieved a brand new soft complexion. What I liked most was that I didn’t face any irritation afterwards. Following up my body polish I took a peak into the VIP room and instantly had images of my girls and I just hanging out and getting pampered in our own private suite. Also, this would be perfect for brides getting ready for their big day. After the tour Thuraya, my hair dresser prepped me to get my hair styled. She started off with a lathery shampooing before applying the hair mask then topping it off with a relaxing head massage. I learned that a good head rub is great for blood circulation which in return stimulates hair growth. She recommends that doing that just once a week really makes a difference. After wrapping my hair up I was escorted to the nail area to get my nails done while the hair mask worked its magic. The nail technician handled my nails with extra care as I don’t like having my cuticles cut. After my manicure, Thuraya was very understanding on how I like my hair styled, as I hate having it look too done. She styled it in a way where it looked like I was born having beautiful hair, for example turn to our Glam Cam section in the magazine and see for yourselves. Overall, I had a great experience the body scrub, manicure, hair mask and hair-do made me walk out of the salon feeling beautiful, shiny and new.

The Health Tip List

by Yalda Golsharifi

1

Want to treat your hair? Try this recipe - mash up a banana and mix one egg together. It will be thick and paste-like. Leave it on your hair for up to 30 minutes max! Wash and only use your conditioner on tips!

2

To get a fresh, radiant complexion? Slice up some grapes and rub all over your face! The acids in the fruit act as exfoliators.

3

Dark circles around your eyes? Try this once a week - throw in a small handful of fresh parsley and 2 tablespoons of yogurt in a food processor to form a paste, apply generously under your eyes for about 20 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water.

4

To get your nail polish to last longer, apply a coat of vinegar onto your nails and let it dry.

Mar 87 STYLES 126

5

Last but not least, don’t forget your beauty sleep. 7 to 8 hours every night.

Power of the Plus by Yalda Golsharifi

1

Listen to music. But not any music! You want to feel energetic? Happy? Mellow? Listen to something that will put you in the mood you want to be in. It works! Especially if you sing along.

4

3

2

Surround yourself with people you’d look up to, or who would influence you with positivity. People who believe in you and give you that good energy that would only inspire you to be better.

Your home- make it a place that makes you happy. Whether you need to change some things around, get rid of things or even buy a few pieces or add color. Also, make sure its clutter free and clean! Dirt and clutter definitely don’t put us in a good mood.

Make someone happy. Encourage and motivate others to follow their dreams, or simply just make them smile. This will change your perspective and will build such confidence in you.

5

Eat healthy. When you eat clean, you feel good about yourself. You’ll feel even more alive when you add greens or healthy smoothies in your diet. Mar 87 STYLES 127

his month we’re going all out with what we want. Why is that? Because it’s red, it’s beautiful, and it’s Italian! We want the Ferrari 458 Italia. This beauty is powered by a 4.5 L V8 engine! Know what that means? Neither do we. But we want it anyway. Imagine wearing that beautiful Versace gown, strappy Salvatore Ferragamo heels, and a bright red lip with smoky eyes (done using Kiko cosmetics) and getting into this red beauty and enjoying the night. These Italians can really understand beauty and luxury!

Rome

D

eemed the eternal city, Rome is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. The first monument, and the epitome of the Roman Empire, is the Colosseum. It is the largest and most famous open-air theater in the Western world and was constructed in 72AD by Emperor Vespasian. It was originally constructed to accommodate more than 50,000 people! Another beautiful monument not to be missed is St.Peter’s Basilica. This gorgeous church is a work of art decorated by none other than Michelangelo, and features a square designed by Bernini. Domes seem to be a major attraction in Rome and the largest has to be The Pantheon. This beautifully constructed monument was built in 126 AD as a temple for the Roman gods and remains the largest dome in the world today! The most famous work by Michelangelo is the Sistine Chapel located in the Vatican Museum and should not be missed. Everything from the spiral staircase to the Raphael rooms will leave you breathless at the Vatican. My personal favorite site is the Trevi Fountain. Whether or not you’ve seen the infamous scene in La Dolce Vita where the lady dances in the fountain, you can’t help but admire the beauty of this landmark. Legend says that if you throw a coin into the fountain, you will one day return to Rome. Walking in Rome, you will definitely come across the Spanish steps. Don’t be surprised to see people hanging out and admiring the Piazza di Spagna and Fontana della Barcaccia, designed by Bernini. The biggest remnants of the Roman Empire lay in the Roman Forum; a location, which used to be the home of elections and inaugurations for the emperors of Ancient Rome.

Milan

N

ot only is Milan a major fashion destination, it also bears home to much of Italy’s culture. The Church of Santa Maria della Grazie holds the famous Leonardo da Vinci fresco entitled The Last Supper. Having withstood the Renaissance, the French invasion, and World War II, it is truly a miracle to view. The Piazza del Duomo features a Dome that took 500 years to build and serves as a great place to view the Alps beyond Milan’s metropolitan area. If you love to shop then look no further than the Rectangle of Gold! The Quadrilatero d’Oro features 4 streets filled with designer boutiques such as Armani, Missono, Prada and Versace. Milan also proudly houses one of the oldest malls in the world called the Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II. Opened in 1867, the ceiling vaults represent Asia, Africa, Europe and America. Prada’s flagship store is located in the mall, which has been referred to as il salotto di Milano, or Milan’s living room. If you have a full day to devote to Italian culture, check out the Castello Sforzesco, which features 12 museums and focuses on art, design and history. Also, if you like the Opera, Milan has the famous La Scala opera house which is one the best in the world! If you feel reminiscent of Venice, no worries, you can take a canal tour with Navigli Lombardi. Don’t forget to take a break to grab un caffè. Milan is so well known for coffee that the CEO of Starbucks actually got his idea of launching US espresso bars from the many famous coffee shops around the city. Ladies, send your husbands to the San Siro Stadium and let him tour the home of two rivaling clubs AC Milan and FC Internazionale, while you head to one of the many famous spas in Milan or head to Dmagazine Outlet for some bargain finds.

Portofino

O

ne of the most enchanting cities in the Italian Riviera, and certainly the most beautiful of the Cinque Terre, 5 cities on the coastline, Portofino is a place for those with luxury tastes. The scenery in this idyllic town is to die for. The harbor itself is so pretty and has boutiques and restaurants all around. Just behind the harbor is the Chiesa di San Giorgio, which is built on a sanctuary of Roman soldiers who dedicated the site to the Persian god Mithras. The most famous site in Portofino is the Castello Brown, which was built to keep away the Turks during the invasion. Inside the walls, there is a lush garden and views of the town and harbor. Higher up, you will find Faro (lighthouse) which not only has a view of the town but extends over plenty of coastline and gives you the opportunity to take a stroll through the pine forest. One thing you will notice is that many of the frequent visitors to Portofino are avid yacht goers and enjoy parking their yacht on the harbor and people watching. Similar to the lifestyle in St.Tropez, Portofino is great for those who love exuberance and the opportunity to live in luxury and extravagance. A week in this enchanting town will make you feel like you’ve walked into an Italian painting! With the numerous hikes and endless waters, Portofino is a place for those seeking fun in the sun and relaxation.

Capri

C

apri is synonymous with celebrities and romance. This beautiful island is just 30mins from Naples, and is a wonderful summer destination. Once you enter the island go to La Piazzetta where you can find a bite to eat, or plenty to shop. Best of all it’s the heart of Capri so you will find lots to do! If you enjoy boating then you can rent a boat for the day to tour around the island or take a trip to Positano. The best activity in Capri is La Grotta Azzurra. The Blue Grotto was discovered in the time of Tiberius and was initially thought to be haunted. It was later rediscovered in the 1800s and since has grown to be the most popular attraction in Capri. The water is completely clear and beautiful and the grotto itself is a mere 10mins by boat from the Marina Grande. The Faraglioni islands are worth admiring and you can certainly do so by taking the 17kilometer coastal walk. The highest point of the island is Monte Solaro, which can be reached by chair lift. At the top you will be able to gaze at the island and the crystal blue waters surrounding the many boats and yachts in the Amalfi Coast. Marina Piccola is the beach famed in mythology for being the place where the sirens tried to seduce Ulysses. Although the beach isn’t sandy, the water is still beautiful and it’s a great place for sun bathing.

One and Only

An unforgettable experience

O

ne & Only resorts raise the bar on luxury accommodation destinations. Strategically located in some of the most beautiful locations in the world, the collection of resort properties provides the best quality in hospitality services and guarantees its guests an unforgettable experience. We had the opportunity to have a chat with the Regional Marketing Manager of Kerzner Group Mr. Yousif Mukhtar and he gave us an inside look into One & Only resorts. The opportunities they for see for the future is to develop the GCC market; their vision was to be ranked in the top 20 list of luxury properties and accommodations and today they have four properties ranked on that list. They achieved this by utilizing all the tools required for the market and approached the GCC market with a different approach, Mr. Yousif stated, “We came here and did the research. We put our strategy to suit the market and executed this using three strategies; budget, travel agent partners Mar 87 STYLES 136

and the media.” This has been reflected in figures. Compared to 2012 there was a 12% increase from the Kuwait market, which is considered to be a very healthy growth. “There’s something unique about the Kuwaiti Traveler,” he mentioned, “What I really like about them is that they are into exploring new destinations and are up for adventure. They discover and the rest follows. Kuwait innovates the new destinations.” For example they have a great portion of market share of Kuwaitis visiting the Bahamas. And the Bahamas is considered to be untouched region for the majority of GCC nationals. Now that they have established and secured their market share in the GCC towards all Kerzner properties, they are in the process of expanding their One & Only brand in the Middle East. Their goal by 2017 is to have more presence in the Middle East in terms of properties. Currently the group is under negotiation to have three more properties done in Bahrain, Doha in Qatar and Jeddah in Saudi. Their current mission and strategy

is to tap inside these three key markets in the GCC. On the European side they plan on developing a property in Montenegro. The One and Only concept is to open very unique and iconic destinations. They try to steer away from the Far East, for example Thailand and gear their focus on destinations that would allow the traveler to explore new terrains. They have recently announced that One & Only Hymen Island in Australia is planned to open in July 2014. The location is right off the Great Barrier Reef and it is the island in Australia where you can reach the reef by a luxury yacht. Any other location would have you to take a seaplane or a helicopter. Compared to other hotel chains the One & Only brand is considered to be a new chain. Their new mission is to standout amongst the vast number of chains available in the industry, by choosing strategic positioning in the market and choosing the right destinations. “We would like to tell the people where to go, we want to introduce new locations and

we are really keen on developing family friendly destinations.” They have noticed a great demand with respect accommodating families, especially from the GCC market. For instance a service that guests would find in every One & Only resort is a stand-alone kids club, built specifically for kids in mind. Staffed with qualified and dedicated individuals who take care of the kids in a professional way. “Once a guest visits any one of our resorts they don’t have to worry about their kids. We have parents who can leave their kids for days at a time and just enjoy themselves. We are known to be a family friendly oriented brand. Our goal is to be the ‘one & only’ decision when it comes to traveling.” Their number one criteria is to get the families involved and be able to enjoy the facilities that they offer by giving families the chance to experience unseen destinations. Interestingly enough, people wouldn’t describe Africa as the typical family go-to destination. However, by working with their partnered travel agents they have been able to change that image. Today they have families traveling to their resorts in Cape Town and Mauritius. If luxury is what your looking for, One & Only resorts defines it. Take One & Only Reethi Ra in the Maldives for example, you wouldn’t say you have been to the Maldives if you didn’t. It’s the best island in the Maldives. They are considered to be the number one resort in the Maldives as well as the most expensive compared to other competitors. The size of the island alone is larger than the capital of Maldives with staff of 900 employees that caters only 130 villas; you can only imagine the quality of service that you will find there. If you are looking for a weekend getaway to Dubai, then travelers can check-in at One & Only Royal Mirage or One & Only the Palm. Dubai is so close and if you have been there a number of times already, then there’s so much that you can see as a destination. Luckily enough One & Only and Atlantis came together and were able to always impress the Kuwaiti travelers. There’s always something new to see even after visiting for a second or third time around. And this is what Atlantis and One & Only did about especially in Dubai. One should ask while planning their trip to Dubai ‘am I going to Atlantis Dubai or just Dubai? Although it’s the same city they are completely different experiences. With every One & Only resort experience the guest takes home unforgettable memories, because when a traveler chooses to stay at a One & Only resort they don’t just get offered excellent service and top of the line accommodation, more importantly they are offered that unforgettable experience. From the Streets of New York

Dynamic Dazzlers This month has been amazing! I was able to attend Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York and had the best time! I must admit, getting caught in the snowstorm wasn’t my favorite experience, but it was all worth it. Most of the shows were at the Lincoln Center and were so extravagant and over the top, you would feel you’re on a movie set. Imagine walking into the show, walking down an isle comprised of 100 people working on the show, and finally reaching your seat- which by the way, is overshadowed by the hundreds of people standing behind the seated rows.

The first day I arrived in New York I went to the Carolina Herrera fashion show and was so impressed by her collection. All the colorful and feminine designs were to die for. As always her clothes and presence were elegant and graceful. Traditional, yet innovative, her clothes exude a bold modern feminism characterized by the use of color and trim on her designs. As a designer, Carolina Herrera has attracted strong women such as Michele Obama to wear her pieces. This is largely in part due to the architectural forms and geometric prints she utilizes, while using abstract digital patterns in combination with hand painting and crystal beading. Herrera makes it easy for the modern conservative woman to look both elegant and fashionable. The most memorable show I attended was the Alice + Olivia show. It was so creative and left the spectators wanting more. Normally, the show is set in a traditional large white space. This year, the show was set in the McKittrick Hotel. This fictional hotel is the infamous set for the show Sleep No More. This interactive show is set in a multitude of dark rooms, which feel much like a haunted house. I’ve actually been to the show Sleep No More in the past and was so impressed by the many rooms and various shows present, but watching a fashion show in this space is absolutely incredible! The show began with us walking up a dark narrow passageway, which led to the lobby of the ‘hotel’, where there was a jazz band and a feel of the 1920s. Then we began walking into the various rooms, which had models upon models decked out in the pieces with a full-face of makeup and large exaggerated hair. The accessories were also quite memorable. In fact, one of the models was perched on this green hill with braids down to the floor. I saw Paris and Nicky Hilton at the event among other celebrities and felt that everyone there was beyond impressed with the collection and overall vibe of the event. The show was packed beyond belief! When I finally walked out of the show I noticed close to 100 people waiting outside hoping to catch a glimpse of the collection. Fashion week was most certainly an unforgettable experience! Over the years, fashion continues to evolve and designers continue to choose new venues to go along with their new styles, and I can’t wait to see what next season has in store!

Urban & Exotic: The Aigner Leather Collection Spring/Summer 2014 From street culture to the Amazon: The Aigner Leather Collection S/S 2014 takes you on a journey into the heart of Brazil – to the vibrant metropolis of Rio de Janeiro. The luxurious bag creations of the Munich-based leather lifestyle brand were inspired by fiery samba rhythms, the sweeping exuberance of the famous Brazilian carnival and Rio’s urban exotic flair. The collection also embodies the beauty and power of South American women in the exciting city. Senior designer Christian Beck combines this urban joie de vivre with Brazil’s exotic nature. Elaborate embossing patterns on the leather reflect the country’s lush flora and fauna: The surface structures of crocodile and lizard skin, raffia texture, handcrafted braided elements and Saffiano leather symbolize the richness of the rainforest. The colours of this leather collection echoes the intense and varied hues of South America: Bright, radiant shades of Pink, Yellow, Orange and Green mingle with subtle nuances of Gold, Terra and Nude. The creative and carefully crafted details of the luxury bags are an expression of Aigner’s love for leather: One of the highlights is the new interpretation of the Aigner logo as a leopard print combined with bright contrasting colours. In the Collection S/S 2014, Aigner’s signature traditional craftsmanship meets modern design elements and big, bold colour blocking. Sophisticated details such as zippers, studs and clever closures turn these bag creations into very special luxury pieces.
