SPORTS & ACTIVITIES The Students’ Union has a keen interesting in arranging and assisting students in participating in sports and leisure activities and we are always looking to add to the number of sports teams and fitness activities we offer during the year. We have made links with both the local FE College and the council to offer gym deals for both individual sessions and monthly membership. There are also numerous sports clubs and groups who offer facilities and activities to join in with. We have tried to offer an opportunity have a go at activities over the last year by offering taster sessions to students, these included Yoga and Netball taster sessions which were free and open to all. We will continue with this in the coming year at CCAD, where you can expect taster sessions in Dance, SelfDefence classes and Yoga, just to name a few. if you would like more information or would like help in finding a club to suit your sporting needs get in touch with Dan Tierney, the college’s Student Liaison Officer by emailing daniel.tierney@ccad.ac.uk. TEXTILES GRADUATE SELECTED FOR

TEXPRINT

Graduate Nikki Rowe, was one of only 24 students nationally to be selected to exhibit at Texprint – the most coveted graduate showcase in the textile graduate calendar. Each year, shortly after Easter, Texprint invites tutors of all BA and MA textile design courses across the UK to nominate their most creative final year students who will graduate that summer. In June each year over 200 textile graduates are invited to interview in one-to-one sessions with their portfolios – the turn around is so fast that graduates are then exhibiting with Texprint in the first week of July. Nikki is now one of 24 designers who are mentored and showcased at several industry events: Texprint London is Texprint’s preview presentation, held in July in London exclusively for Texprint supporters, press, college tutors and industry VIPs – it is a great opportunity for Texprint sponsors to enjoy their first view of the designers’ outstanding work.

They also invite leading figures in the industry to judge the Texprint Awards for Fashion, Interiors, Colour and Pattern. Nikki has been successfully chosen as one of six students to win the AVA Texprint Training Award, which is awarded by sponsor, AVA CAD/CAM. Nikki’s prize is a 5 day course, giving her the opportunity to learn about the key functions of AVA CAD/CAM’s software and relevant industry processes.

The main Texprint showcase of work is held in September at Première Vision Designs, Paris, the international textile design speciality show, and part of Première Vision Pluriel, which groups together Europe’s most important fashion fabrics, yarn, textile design and accessories fairs. Nikki will have her own professional stand within the Texprint ‘village’ – this is a unique opportunity to meet international buyers and make invaluable contacts, receive commissions, meet and network with industry and press.

The AOP Student Awards 2017, is a celebration of the best of those studying photography, helping to provide that all important step up to the professional arena. By supporting new emerging talent, the awards are an opportunity to get a first look at the potential stars of tomorrow. The award was made by student nomination with then the professionals at AOP deciding on a winner, so the entire team is delighted that students took the time to nominate them for such a prestigious award. ADVICE FOR NEW STUDENTS We wanted to make sure that our new students are fully prepped to join our college in September! First things first, we have a brand spanking new building which you may have seen if you’ve popped over to our open days, but if not, take the time to have a look round on your first day. We’ve put together a list of points to help you throughout your first year! 1.

First Year COUNTS!

One of the myths floating around many students across many universities and courses is that, “first year doesn’t count”. It very much counts! Every course is different, but in order to graduate with that 1st or 2:1 you so desperately want, don’t slack off in first year. Get stuck in with the projects and work hard and it will set you off with the best work ethic and record possible.

2.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Leave any inhibitions at the door when you arrive. Studying for a degree is hard work and asking for help and taking the what advice you’re given is the recipe for success! Your tutors are experts in their field and mark your work. Take the time to show them your ideas, thoughts and struggles and they will guide you along the way.

3.

Utilise the Facilities

As you will see when you arrive, our campus is pretty spectacular, equipped with everything you might need for any project! One thing that stood out from the feedback from last year’s student is that everyone’s willing to help you, if you need to use some equipment from another course, go see the course staff and they’ll be happy to help you. Also, make sure to take the time to check out the library on site and also the amazing new studios.

4.

Explore Your Surroundings

Whilst you’re a student here and living either in halls or nearby in student accommodation, check out some of the hot spots of Hartlepool and the North East. There’s so much inspiration from beautiful surrounding locations starting with the Headland!

5.

Keeping the Balance

Binge drinking and hard-core partying is widely broadcast as typical student behaviour, but in reality you don’t have to entertain that. Balancing social life, college work and family is a big task and letting one outweigh the others aka clubbing every single night, maybe isn’t the greatest of ideas! This new found freedom is exciting, but don’t let it run away with you.

6.

Get a Watch!

Now I remember at school when I arrived late to class once the teacher would say, “if this was a university, the door would be closed if you arrive late” and that stuck with me! Get to classes early, get the best seat and don’t be that person who slinks in late. Gaining a good trust and rapport with your tutor by valuing their time and always being prompt will show them your mature and capable.

7.

Check Our Social Media Channels

Keep updated with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for the latest info and advice on the run up to your arrival and also throughout the year. We post upcoming events, exhibitions and student advice and experience too! Look out for our student videos on our Facebook and YouTube for an insight into each course featuring current students and graduates.

STUDENT REPS As a Student Rep at Cleveland College of Art & Design you will play an important role as a voice for your fellow students; providing a link between students and staff, enabling the college to receive feedback and suggestions to build on the things that are working well and to make improvements. Being a Student Rep is all about listening to fellow students and taking on board positive suggestions and ideas, issues and concerns. Management, staff and the Students’ Union work in partnership with Student Reps to innovate new developments, create solutions, resolve issues effectively and bring ideas to life. As a Student Rep, you can make a real difference to the learning experience for your fellow students for students in the future. Student Reps’ play an important role in the growth and direction of the Students’ Union at CCAD, working with the exec team to ensure that every member of the college across every programme is having a say in how the Students’ Union is ran and what it delivers.

If it is your first time as a Student Rep then you may be unsure about some aspects of the role, and so will probably have some questions – feel free to contact daniel.tierney@ccad. ac.uk or head over to the Student Engagement section on Moodle once you enrol. Our Student Liaison Officer will also be delivering a presentation and having a chat with all new starters in late September before we go through the process of electing Student Reps. As a Student Rep, you will be offered training and support from both the Students’ Union and the College to ensure that you feel as supported as possible in your new position. An initial mandatory induction and training session, which all new Student Reps’ will attend, will set you off on the right foot and will also give you the opportunity to meet other new Student Reps and discuss any questions that may not have been answered. Keep up to date with Student Reps info and dates and find useful resources on the Student Engagement section on Moodle.
