IT’S YOUR SU What does the SU do?
When you enrol at The Northern School of Art you automatically become a member of the Students’ Union. The Students’ Union is here to provide advice and information for you and is run democratically by students for students.
Who runs the SU?
The Students’ Union is ran by the executive committee, which is made up of the SU President, elected in the previous academic year, with up to 10 part-time executive committee officers which are positions open to run for annually. There are elected student reps from each cohort of all our programmes at the college as to ensure every cohort will have their say on the direction of The Students’ Union. The committee is also aided by a member of college staff in the shape of our Student Liaison Officer, Daniel Tierney.
Representation
The main purpose of The Students’ Union is to represent and support students - within the college, locally and nationally. We also represent students in ensuring the can create the overall university experience.
Support and advice
The Students’ Union has an open door policy and we welcome any questions, queries, ideas or comments about The Students’ Union or comments regarding any aspect of your time here. Even if we can’t help you directly, we will do our best to direct you to someone who can help, whether it be within the college or an external organisation.

WELCOME WEEK INFORMATION Each year the Students’ Union holds a series of events spread across welcome week for new students (and old). Taking part in the wide range of events that take place provides a great chance to meet new people and settle into The Northern life. Freshers Week also includes the Freshers Fayre, which this year will take place on the afternoon of Tuesday 19th September down at 1 Church Street. This is where local and national businesses offer their services and products to students, often at discount prices - a great chance to get some freebies! This will also be a chance to see about activities you can take part in across the year, including sports, clubs and societies. There will also be food and drink available, so its a great way to explore your interests and make new friends. Other events such as SU nights at the college and pub crawls are also set out in the timetable and further information will be available via facebook and instagram. All college ran freshers events will be free entry this year, so get yourself along! CLUBS & SOCIETIES The Students’ Union currently supports a number of clubs and societies, which are a great way to meet new people. These groups are set up and run by our students and are open to all. If you’ve got a particular interest and want to get other students involved, we can help you get a club or society up and running and provide support throughout the process. Here are an example of some of the current Clubs and Societies: • Yoga • Sailing Club • Research Society • LGBTQ • Self Defence The Students’ Union has a keen interesting in arranging and assisting students in participating in sports and leisure activities and we are always looking to add to the number of sports teams and fitness activities we offer during the year. We have made links with both the local FE College and the council to offer gym deals for both individual sessions and monthly membership. There are also numerous sports clubs and groups who offer facilities and activities to join in with. We have tried to offer an opportunity have a go at activities over the last year by offering taster sessions to students, these included Yoga and Netball taster sessions which were free and open to all. We will continue with this in the coming year at The Northern, where you can expect taster sessions in Dance, SelfDefence classes and Yoga, just to name a few. If you would like more information or would like help in finding a club to suit your sporting needs get in touch with Dan Tierney, the college’s Student Liaison Officer by emailing daniel.tierney@northernart.ac.uk.
