Fine Art Exhibition Fund raising for children with Autism WORK BY SOME OF THE COUNTRY’S MOST ASPIRING YOUNG ARTISTS WENT ON SHOW AT AN EXHIBITION TO HELP RAISE VITAL FUNDS FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM. Fine art students displayed their work at the Encore Exhibition, Arthur Robinson House, Billingham. Sales from the event raised money for the Stockton-based charity Daisy Chain which helps families affected by autism. The exhibition was supported by Know How North East Ltd, Global Anodes, Sixth Element Marketing, So Jammy, Business Support Services at Arthur Robinson House, and Stockton Borough Council. CCAD course leader Judith Crompton says: “This is a fabulous opportunity for our students to showcase their final year work and a great step up onto the career ladder. “Not only does it give them a platform for the public to view their work it also gives them an opportunity to have their work critiqued by people outside of the college environment and hopefully generate future sales and commissions. “Their work is of an incredibly high standard, very contemporary and conceptually driven and it is a great opportunity to purchase original works from some of the most up and coming young artists in the region.”

Over 50 pieces of original work, ranging from large canvases to small framed collections, glasswork and sculptures, were displayed. Cosponsor of the exhibition Gillie Hatton, of Sixth Element, said: “We offered CCAD students a chance to exhibit their works as part of the first exhibition held here at Arthur Robinson House in November 2009. “It was such a success, with hundreds of people coming to view, that we invited them to come back and exhibit their end of term work. “Once again they have produced some fantastic work and created a stunning exhibition.” Graduate Lauren Duncan, 18, of Billingham, who will be continuing her studies at CCAD with a degree in graphic design, was celebrating after her print ‘Emotions within Relationships’ was snapped up by a North East businessman. “It’s very exciting to have your work put on public display,” said Lauren. “I’m absolutely over the moon that my piece has sold on opening night and helped to raise some money for Daisy Chain as well as helping me fund some of my future studies.” First year student Daryl Watson added: “I was very honoured to have my art chosen to sit alongside the graduate work and it is an incredible feeling to see it up on the wall being viewed by the public.”

Interactive Media Selected to make NHS Mental Health service video Young movie makers tackle discrimination by putting health issues in the picture. Students from Interactive Media have been selected to produce a short film for the NHS Time to Change project. This challenges the stereotypical image and aims to change people’s perceptions of mental health service users. The entry, from students Sam Slater and Morag Barber, was chosen by Jim Knight, of Jim Knight Media, Peter Adams from Big Lottery Fund and project lead Joe Chidanyika from North Tees NHS Primary Care Trust.

Sam, 18, of Acklam said: “There were eight other entries so we were delighted that our idea was chosen to represent the campaign. “We picked a very simple idea of using four girls – representing that one in four people suffer from mental health related problems – showing that each girl is the same, there is no odd one out, and that mental health issues to not distinguish or define you as a person.” Morag, 19, of Middlesbrough, said: “My mum works with people with special needs so that helped us understand some of the terms related to mental health when we were creating the storyboard. “I was quite shocked to learn just how common these type of issues are and how many different problems are labelled under mental health. “Hopefully our film will show an upbeat positive image which will help tackle discrimination and prejudice.” Interactive media tutor Andy Conway says: “Having a live brief offers great experience for our students who have to work with a professional client meeting their needs and deadlines. “The girls will get to work with a professional film crew and will also take on the roles of actors, directors and producers. “Interactive media is an extremely diverse course and as well as giving student the opportunity to make their own films they can also progress to areas including photography, animation, illustration, graphic design and entertainment design crafts.”

Macbeth meets Blade Runner Best Overall Performing Student of the Year at CCAD Olwyn Ireland’s creations were inspired by Macbeth, the apocalyptic cult movie Bladerunner and horror genre film Underworld and have secured her the Best Overall Performing Student of the Year award at Cleveland College of Art & Design. The Hartlepool designer swapped teaching for student life to pursue her dream of making costumes for a living. Originally she took her friend’s daughter to the town’s Cleveland College of Art & Design to see what was on offer – but signed up herself for the two year FdA in Costume Construction for Stage and Screen and has now completed the top up in BA (Hons) course in Entertainment Design Crafts. Student Olwyn has since received costume commissions from the hosts of the Tall Ships Race, theatres and a re-enactment society.

“I had been making costumes for my daughter’s dance school for ten years so I had some skills,” she said. “I used to teach art and design but took a year out and got bored so decided to take the CCAD courses with a view to becoming a freelance costume designer. I’m already finding there is a lot of work out there particularly on the male side.” Olwyn received a £100 prize sponsored by the regional screening agency Northern Film and Media. Spokesman Caroline Broome said: “We are looking to nurture key talents in the region and give them support when they need it. “The students’ work is exceptional and I am very impressed with it. The college is helping to develop students’ technical skills and is also giving them the chance to tackle projects in the real world.”

Drawing Fashion First and second years studying ND Fashion travelled to London this December to see the Design Museum’s exhibition, Drawing Fashion, to aid in the research for their own illustration units. The work on display had a wide selection of work spanning from the early 20th century, with everything from the trademark flashes of bold colour and strong line quality of Toulouse-Lautrec to the minimalist silhouettes that have made Gustafson such a big name in his field. The exhibition, set out in chronological order, allowed students to see how different techniques and materials were used to convey different moods and emotions throughout certain periods of fashion, influenced by the social and economic situations at the time; paintings from the ‘roaring’ twenties reflect the indulgent and frivolous attitudes with flecks of white paint to represent the girls’ glittering dresses and pouty prints of girls in the 1960s show the nature of the social revolution that was gaining momentum at the time. With a strict ‘no photographs’ policy, students recorded their ideas in their exhibition sketchbooks, prompting a deeper understanding of the artists’ connection with their work and how the techniques and illustration styles used could be reproduced in their own projects back at college. BBC Blast Interactive roadshow visits Green Lane campus The interactive roadshow BBC Blast descended on Cleveland College of Art & Design’s Green Lane campus, Middlesbrough, giving students access to expertise and equipment which are the envy of the world. Scores of students got the chance to be involved with music production, film workshops, special effects sessions, sound and lighting seminars and video and gaming workshops. Event organiser John Offord said: “The creative workshops are designed to inspire the students and show them they can do anything they want to do in the future. “They each got to take something away from their session, whether that was a designed T-shirt or a short movie and the best work will be posted on the BBC Blast website. “The CCAD students were fantastic, really enthusiastic and creative.” Student Morag Barber, 18, of Lingdale said: “The BBC staff were really nice, really helpful and certainly knew their stuff. The equipment was great to use and the whole session did inspire you to want to do more.”

New Graphic T-shirt design company Two fashion graduates set up own company Fashion graduate Martin Brown has launched his own brand of club scene designs in his native North East, after working in London as a supplier, to a host of top high street names. Martin, 22, of Billingham, who graduated with a fashion enterprise degree, has teamed up with fellow CCAD graduate Steven Gunn to create design houses Double Drop and Superstar making their own graphic tee-shirt designs. The creative duo have also set up their own international export/import business ‘Brown Gunn’ supplying knitwear and outerwear to outlets across the world. “It was always on the cards for me to return home to set up my own company as an independent designer,” said Martin, who previously designed accessories for suppliers to TK Maxx, T J Hughes and Sports Direct and undertook a placement with Topman. “We set up the business last month and already we are starting to fill the order books, mainly with outlets in the South East, and we are now looking for scope to supply to major stores throughout the North.

A FORMER LIFEGUARD IS SET TO MAKE A SPLASH IN THE WORLD OF FASHION WITH HIS OWN BESPOKE TEE-SHIRT LABEL.

“We initially had some assistance from Business Link who helped us with the business plan and financial forecast but CCAD’s fashion enterprise course really enabled us to take our talents and turn them into hopefully what will be a very profitable business.”

National charity design work A BUDDING ROCK STAR IS ON A ROLL AFTER SEEING HIS DESIGN WORK USED TO PROMOTE A NATIONAL CHARITY. Cleveland College of Art & Design graphic graduate Niall Bradley attended the unveiling of his six by ten foot artwork at the Brook for Young People office in Stockton. Brook is the only national voluntary sector provider of free and confidential sexual health advice and services specifically for young people under 25. Niall, 23, of Nunthorpe, who plays bass and sings lead vocals with cult North East band Coldcapitol, said “We were given an open brief by Brook to design a large scale art work depicting graphic designs relating to sexual health.” “They wanted something to brighten up their new offices and something that would appeal to young people, so I used vector graphics and swirls to depict confusion, which interpreted my thoughts of images relating to sexual health.

“It was slightly overwhelming when I saw the finished work printed on such a large scale but on this occasion bigger was most definitely better.” Niall, who gave up studying law at Leeds University for a place at CCAD, is now taking the top up BA Honours course in graphic design at Teesside University. “I’d always had an eye for design and was quite creative at school,” he said. “When I got to college I opted for business studies and law but it wasn’t for me. It just took me a while to realise that my real passion lay in design. “I enjoy every aspect of it which is what keeps it refreshing and I’d love to run my own graphics company one day.” Graphic design tutor at CCAD Su Em Sans added: “Niall is a very creative and dynamic student both in his music and in his art. “He has some incredibly interesting design ideas and has shown an eloquence and individuality of type and image works.”

A STUDENT HAS SEEN HER TALENTS COME TO LIFE AFTER HER WORK TOOK ON A STARRING ROLE IN ONE OF THE NATION’S POPULAR TELEVISION SOAPS.

Entertainment Design Crafts Student goes behind the scenes at Hollyoaks Entertainment design crafts student Rebecca Watson has been working with one of the UK’s largest producers, Lime Pictures in Liverpool, on the set of Hollyoaks.

“We could be filming for up to 11 hours a day depending on how many retakes were needed. It was a great experience; everything moved at such a fast pace and I learned so much.”

Rebecca, 20, of Middlesbrough, said: “I couldn’t believe it when they contacted me; I was over the moon and so pleased. I wrote to one of the names on the credits after watching the programme, asking for the chance to do some work experience.

Rebecca had the chance to work closely with the production designer who taught her how to get the most out of materials.

“I was so pleased they got in touch and so excited when they offered me the chance to go and work on set for a week in Liverpool.” Rebecca was involved in building new sets. “We were given our own script which we had to follow and sometimes we had to be ready for up to ten scenes per day,” she said.

She said: “It has made me see a set in a different way and television is so completely different to theatre. It is much quicker and there is a lot more to do and I was always kept going with work.” Rebecca has now decided to pursue a career in television and she is also following up a contact at Emmerdale to see if there is the chance of more experience. She said: “This course has opened so many doors for me; I would recommend this course to anyone.”
