Indigo Trade Show, Paris First year students Olivia Havelock, Rebecca Toothill and Joyce Quinn have had their work displayed at a premier trade fair in Paris. Course leader Lynne Carverhill said: “Indigo is the number one textile show for up-and-coming fabric designers and for some of our first year students to have the opportunity to show their work alongside graduate designers was incredible.

“This is the first competition I have entered so I was really shocked to win and it’s amazing to think my work has been seen by buyers from all over the world.” “I would love to design textiles to be used in high fashion and couture and this has been a great first step into the industry.”

“We offered all of our first years the chance to exhibit at Indigo, alongside our textiles and surface design degree programme students, through a digital print competition run in the college. “Their brief was to produce a design of flora extraordinary measures, inspired by a visit they made to an exhibition at Belsay Hall, which included work by artists Ron Mueck and Freddie Robbins. “The standard of design was exceptional and they all came up with some extremely on trend dramatic representations which were very saleable.” Overall winner, with her repeat leaf and twig pattern, was Olivia Havelock, whose work was displayed in Paris, alongside runners up Rebecca Toothill and Joyce Quinn, before fashion houses including Gucci, Dior and Valentino. Olivia, 17, of Middlesbrough said: “I was motivated by a nature pattern for my work using a mosaic abstract design inspired by Alexander McQueen’s 2010 spring summer collection and Christopher Kane’s current designs.

3D Design design for Chamilia YOUNG architects have charmed a top international jewellery company with their innovative interior design plans. 3D Design students were asked to pitch their ideas to design house Spatial Design, of Bedale, on behalf of their client, global jewellery firm, Chamilia. The live assignment, undertaken by 14 second year students, challenged the young designers to create a reception or boardroom design, to match the Chamilia’s corporate brief, for their UK office and distribution centre in Newcastle. 3D design tutor Martyn Featherstone said: “The managing director of Spatial Design, James Dow, is one of our former students so we were delighted when he offered to set a live brief for our current set of students. “The four week project involved extensive research with James and his creative visualiser Peter Turner, also one of our former students, giving input and feedback throughout the process.

Student Laura Mills, 18, of Bishopton, whose Chamilia reception design was given nine and a half out of ten by James, said: “Working to a deadline made me really focus on my design. “We were asked to work to the criteria ‘will it work’ and ‘will it sell’ and I was really pleased when James said that my design was something that he would be willing to show to a client. “I want to study architecture next year at university and this course has given me a great head start in the design process and a step toward my dream career.” Michael Mcavoy, 18, of Marton, who designed a multifunctional boardroom with breakout space and a glass showcasing area, for Chamilia’s charm bracelet and necklace designs, also impressed James with his work. “I got some great comments from James who was very encouraging,” said Michael. “I’m keen to get into interior architecture so really enjoyed the brief.”

Fine Art Exhibition AN up and coming young artist sold her first artwork within minutes at an exhibition to highlight the region’s talent. Fine art student Alice Fidell saw one of her canvases snapped up at a private viewing for staff, family and friends. Alice, 17, of Hartlepool, who displayed four artworks including three sculptures, said: “This is the first time I have exhibited any of my work so to make a sale straight away, for quite a substantial amount, is absolutely incredible. “It took me about 12 hours to complete the canvas, based around the theme of anxiety, and I’m really thrilled that it has made such an impact. “My ultimate dream would be to become a commissioned artist and making my first ever sale has given me the confidence boost needed to do just that.” The exhibition, organised by 25 CCAD second year national diploma fine art students, featured over 50 pieces of original work including paintings, sculpture drawing and photography. Fine art course leader Judith Crompton said: “As part of the fine art course curriculum the students are required to stage their own exhibition taking responsibility for creating a gallery, hanging and installing their work and promoting the event. “This gives them a great insight into what they can expect after they leave college and also provides a chance to have their work critiqued by family and friends. “Whenever we hold an exhibition there is always a lot of interest from people wanting to buy the work on display, with some pieces selling for around £250, and once again I am delighted that Alice and many of the other students have made the first of what I hope will be many sales to come.” Acklam Grange pupil Dan Hughff, 15, added: “I came to an Aim Higher taster day for fine art at the college and have signed up for the course in September. “Coming along to an exhibition and seeing the kind of work I will hopefully be producing next year is amazing.”

3D Design and Fine Art students visit Barcelona! Students travelled to the Catalonian city of Barcelona for a cultural experience of some of the world’s most renowned art galleries, museums and historic buildings. 16 3D design and 14 fine art students took in the sights including the Picasso Museum, the Miro Museum, Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia and Park Guell. Course leader for 3D design Neil McCormack said: “This was our first visit to Barcelona, with our first year 3D design students, and a great opportunity for them to see some of the most celebrated designs, architecture and artwork in the world. “Being able to get out of the classroom and walk around buildings designed by Gaudi, and see paintings by Picasso was an invaluable experience and one that will hopefully help influence their design work in the future. “Not only that it was also a chance for our students to get away, discover a European capital, and see things they may not normally have the chance to on a family holiday.” Lewis Duell said: “Being at CCAD I can express myself much more creatively and having the opportunity to travel, take in different cultures, see inspirational designs and works of art is incredible.” Sophie Eglon added: “I had been on holiday to Spain before but never experienced the real culture of the country before. “Looking at the amazing architecture in Barcelona has really helped to inspire me in my ambition to become a set designer.”

Lloyds TSB Competition First year students overcame fierce opposition from qualified designers to win coveted places in a national competition. Graphic Design students Sarah Hodgson, Holly Baggott, Owen Smith (not pictured) and Fine Art students Josh Bolam and Rebecca Watson all got through to the regional rounds of the Lloyds TSB Art of Nurture competition after having their work selected from hundreds of entries. The annual art competition, which challenges designers from across the country to create imagery based around the banking groups core values, gives students the chance to gain national recognition for their work. Graphic Design Course Leader, Chris Beadle said: “This year’s competition is open to postgraduates, so to have first year representatives from CCAD qualify for the regional rounds is absolutely incredible. “We have some extraordinarily talented students this year who are capable of using imagery to convey complex messages in their work.” The regional round of the competition was judged on March 10, at The Loft in Leeds, where Josh’s work was chosen to progress to the national finals in London. Fine Art Tutor, Samantha Finlayson said: “We are strong supporters of the Art of Nurture competition and have submitted entries from our students for the past five years with notable success in both the regional and national stages. “This year, as usual, the standard of our students work was exceptionally high and we are very proud of bothour students, who were competing against degree level art students, to get to the regional final.”

Psyche A talented young fashion designer has had a glimpse of the future after one of her creations appeared in a premier fashion store. Fashion and Clothing student, Rachel Charnock has exhibited her wears in Psyche Middlesbrough. Rachel said: “I really wanted to find out if Psyche liked my design and if they would let me be involved in fashion in their store. I was over the moon when they did. “It’s great to have a chance to show it on the high street like this; it’s just brilliant.” Rachel takes a lot of her influence from Giorgio Armani and her design focussed on a clean, simple look creating a grey moleskin jacket, jersey cowl neck top and wool trousers. As part of the Psyche fashion show Rachel’s design was featured alongside two fellow students from CCAD, Jessica Brough and Sophie Bean, who were showing menswear and ladieswear. Rachel said: “I’ve worked so hard on this which is why it’s so nice for it to be seen like this. “I have spent a lot of time on the pattern cutting and construction of the suit and making sure the quality is of a high standard. Marketing manager at Psyche Paolo Capaldi said: “Rachel’s suit is very on trend, very distinct and different. It is a really nice piece. “We were happy to show it as we are very keen to support young talent in the region.” Rachel is heading off for university in September but hopes to fulfil her dream of her own business in the future.

Little Lost Buttons UP and coming North East designers have found themselves right on the button with their innovative award winning enterprise.

“It’s lovely to be able to take something unwanted and turn it into a high end piece of jewellery for someone,” said Rachael.

HE Fashion students are celebrating after being named best start up company for their jewellery range, Little Lost Buttons, at the 2011 Young Enterprise Regional Trade Fair.

“We can tailor any piece to match an outfit or even use buttons from an item of a lost loved one’s clothing to keep as a personal and valuable keepsake.”

Rebecca Dring, Rachael Kelly, Abi Crapper and Claire Kruger, who started the business, as part of their CCAD fashion enterprise course, have also won the partner college award at the North East Universities Blueprint Award for aspiring young entrepreneurs. Rebecca, 21, of Middlesbrough, said: “The original idea behind Little Lost Buttons was to create individual bespoke items of jewellery from recycled buttons turning them into something that could be worn and enjoyed. “We wanted to give the buttons an identity, taking them from being unloved on old items of clothing, stored in tins, or in the back of a drawer, and give them a new home with a new lease of life. “We were really surprised how well the idea took off and how popular the jewellery has become and winning a business award was incredible.” The team, who collected thousands of buttons from family and friends, were also given donations from charity shops and fellow students. “We decorated boxes and put them around the college asking for students and tutors to put in any old unwanted buttons,” said Abi, 20. “Some days we would have loads. “People were really generous in giving us donations including a lady from the Teesside Hospice Charity shop who gave us three huge tins full of buttons.” The designers, who turn the buttons into bracelets, brooches, rings and necklaces, sell their jewellery through trade fairs, button parties and by word of mouth, wrapped in individual hand-made packages.

The company already has a large Facebook following and also provides jewellery making kits. “Button jewellery is a lot of fun to make and something you can do in your own home,” added Claire. “Running a business alongside our studies is a great experience. “Hopefully it will continue to grow and develop and maybe be something that we could consider for a future career.”

Big fat wedding dresses AN ASPIRING designer is getting ready to create extravagant wedding dresses inspired by a popular documentary television series. Entertainment Design and Crafts student, Stacey Bell is working on unique creations for established bridal company Pretty Picture Bridal Boutique in Middlesbrough. The popularity of the Channel 4 series ‘My big fat gypsy wedding’ has seen a huge increase in demand for unforgettable dresses. Stacey said: “This really is a dream come true for me. Ever since I was a little girl I have wanted a really huge dress with lots of ruffles and gathers; something very girly. “Now I have the chance to make lots of my dream dresses but only bigger.”

“I have watched every single episode and looked carefully at how the dresses are made and I am looking forward to rising to the challenge.” The dream opportunity came about thanks to her course tutor who recommended her work to Michelle Askey, owner of the bridal business. Michelle said: “We are hoping to cater for client demand. Since the TV show we have had quite a few enquiries and we are hoping to offer a unique service in creating these special dresses.” Stacey has already put her skills into action by taking orders for prom dresses, another area in which she would like to specialise at the bridal shop.

Stacey has watched the series closely to identify the type of dresses and detail she may be asked for with her new clientele. “In the show they are always looking for something really different, completely over the top with massive attention to detail and plenty of wow factor.

Borrowers A YOUNG artist, who is taking giant steps towards a career in the arts, has made a massive impact with his world in miniature. Entertainment Design Crafts student Nick Hope created a scene from The Borrowers, which proved one of the big hits at the Standout degree show. Nick, 22, who moved from Preston to complete the course, said: “It was my favourite book when I was little. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed recreating it and bringing it back to life.” The Borrowers den forms a colourful collection of creations that Nick has designed and produced entirely including a selection of the huge items that the Clock family often worked hard to borrow. A visual delight of all things giant, they include a cotton reel and needle, batteries, tea lights, thimbles, dice, matches, pencils, keys, a watch, board games – and even a tin of sardines. “It took me about 18 weeks to make this and I really wanted it to feel like it is lived in like in the book,” he said. “I hope people can pick up on that. “Ironically, I actually borrowed a lot of the materials myself, such as a plant pot from my friend’s garden to make the giant thimble and lots of wax to fill the enormous tee light.” Nick’s work and determination to create a visually stunning showpiece has already paid off as his skills are in great demand, he has just secured work on the well known BBC TV series Tracy Beaker, which is soon to be filmed in Jesmond, Newcastle. He said: “I was over the moon that my name had been put forward and it’s all thanks to a contact I made through the college from working on the United film as prop and set assistant. “I can’t wait to get started. For me it’s a foot in the door in the industry and who knows where it might lead.” He has also been approached by the Theatre Royal, in Newcastle, which is going to set up the den for its learning space in the theatre, which is used as an education studio hosting workshops for teachers and children throughout the region.

SHAMELESS! Alison Lyons, who is studying the BA Hons Entertainment Design Crafts programme, has been working with the crew of the Bafta award winning drama series Shameless.

She said: “I sat on set and watched the costumes for continuity. We had to monitor each set closely to make sure it was right.

Alison, 21, said: “I made contact with the costume designer of Shameless as she used to be a student here at this college.

“If a jacket was zipped up in the last take of a scene, it had to remain zipped up, and even if it had been raining on a previous scene we had to make sure the clothes were wet to follow on filming.

“I contacted her because I really want to work in TV and film and I was delighted when they said I could go and join them for some work experience.”

““It was really exciting,” she said. “I had a good idea of how the costume department worked but didn’t realise the attention to detail that goes into it.

Shameless is filmed in Manchester in a purpose-built set of studios on the Roundthorn industrial estate in Wythenshawe.

“This has helped me so much and I hope from the time I have spent with the designers they will keep me in mind for work when I qualify this year.”

Alison joined them during filming on the many sets featuring the popular pub, the characters’ homes and the police station.

The Studio rocks on! The Studio, the former Methodist Church on Tower Street in Hartlepool is being turned into a venue for students to use during the day and to be available to showcase local talent during the evening and at weekends, as well as attracting more high-profile bands. The Studio will be refurbished during the Summer with a view to opening its doors in September! Principal, Martin Raby said “We have been looking to create an education quarter which will give our students a real “higher education” experience. A centre of this sort is not available at any other local college to my knowledge so it can only add to our unique offering already available in Hartlepool. Six hundred higher education students a year will now have a unique social environment to enjoy” The Studio charity will continue its unique offer to local musical talent, offer bar facilities for students over 18 years old and also be a base for the Students’ Union.

Creative Lodge A CREATIVE young artist has seen her dreams come alive after securing premises to launch her own business in a prime town centre location. The college is giving students the golden opportunity to secure premises in its latest venture the Creative Lodge, which is located in Hartlepool. The incubator units allow students to rent space giving them a launch pad for their own enterprises. Former student Amanda Bradley, 22, of North Hartlepool, said: “I was trying to work from home and run my new business from there but it was difficult. “When I heard about the Creative Lodge, and that it was available for exstudents, I jumped at the chance.” Amanda studied an HND in graphic design at CCAD in 2006, which was followed by going to university, where she gained a first class degree in the same subject.

“I want to focus on editorial and using illustration that informs people and tells a story,” she said. “I want to do something that means something and increases awareness. An illustration can tell so much more than a photo.” Amanda has successfully carried out work for the NHS and is currently working with a local poet providing illustrations for his work. “Being able to have my own premises is fantastic and it is so reasonable,” she said. “I pay £70 per month and I get to use all the college facilities. “I am able to use the digital printing equipment and screen printing when I need to and the really good thing is, if I need advice on something, I can still ask the tutors. It is a brilliant arrangement. “The other good thing is my work could take me throughout the North East or the UK but it’s great to know I have a really good base to come back to and work from.” For further information on Amanda Bradley Illustration and Design please log on to www.amandabradley.co.uk.
