2011 & 2012 The creative sector is the UK’s flagship industry – as a nation we are world famous for our designers, artists and film makers. This is reflected in the scale and growth of the sector in recent decades – the creative economy employs 2.2 million people and has grown year on year through the recession. By 2022 the sector will need 1.2m new workers.

It is an industry that depends on its graduate skills – 58.8% of jobs in the sector are at least graduate level (compared to 31.8% in the wider economy) – by 2022 it will need 900,000 graduates to keep pace with demand.

EMPLOYABILITY & ENTERPRISE SUPPORT We offer a dedicated service that stands out from the crowd of generic careers services – because we are a specialist college so is our dedicated employability and enterprise service – Folio. Our team supporting students and graduates have worked across the creative sector – they know their stuff because they have done it themselves.

Folio helps students get where they want to go…

We also bring in experts to work with students – Folio hosts monthly creative coffee mornings where students and alumni can get advice and meet these specialists covering marketing, finance, digital and intellectual property.

Networking is very important in the creative sector so we provide regular networking opportunities where students can meet people already working in industry in an informal setting – building their contacts for future work. Under our CCAD Creative banner we run a series of open lectures, seminars and masterclasses all free and open to all.

Folio is all about helping students to help themselves, our support is impartial, confidential and designed to meet personal needs and complement each programme of study. The Folio Centre is open as a drop-in and place to do research.

INDUSTRIAL LIAISON We have an established Industrial Liaison Group with specialists from all fields of the creative economy…these individuals, well known nationally and internationally in their fields, work with students and staff, providing vital industry insights and helping the develop our curriculum. These talented and influential individuals are appointed as Visiting Fellows or Visiting Lecturers and have regular physical and on-line contact with programmes.

Will Simpson is the concept and storyboard artist for Game of Thrones – as one our Visiting Fellows Will visits us in college to work with students. In January 2015 he spent two days with us delivering a talk and Q & A session about his career.

Tina Sherifa Hicks is a film and TV Production Designer and Art Director working on high profile shows including Waterloo Road, Scott & Bailey, Wire In the Blood and Eastenders.

DAN HOLDSWORTH

STEPHEN WRIGHT

Dan Holdsworth is an internationally known British photographer who creates large-scale photographs and digital art characterized by the use of traditional techniques and unusually long exposure times, and by radical abstractions of geography. He has exhibited internationally including solo shows at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, and Barbican Art Gallery, London; and group shows at Tate Britain, London, and Centre Pompidou, Paris.

His work is held in collections including the Tate Collection, Saatchi Collection, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Stephen Wright created the House of Dreams museum in East Dulwich. He uses the discarded objects of everyday life to create mosaics: milk bottle tops, broken dolls, dolls eyeballs, the contents of Christmas crackers, false teeth, pen lids, crockery, and the rich pickings of a car boot sale. Seemingly worthless ubiquitous objects are turned into jewels that become an integral part of the stories he tells. His interest is driven by the impromptu aesthetic qualities that they offer.

Wright’s use of objects is Outsider Art. A Baroque Art for our times. Steven works with our students to inspire them and challenge the aesthetic in their design.

MIKE KELLY

GODFREY WORSDALE

Mike Kelly is the former Finance Director of Warner Brothers and is now Managing Director of Northern Alliance. As its inaugural head of Finance, Mike helped establish the UK Film Council, integrate it’s constituent bodies, create it’s systems and policies and make it’s initial investments in the development, production and distribution of films including Gosford Park, Bloody Sunday and The Magdalene Sisters.

Godfrey Worsdale has just been appointed as the Director of the Henry Moore Foundation having been the longest serving Director of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, where he brought the Turner Prize show out of London.

Godfrey has delivered talks on the ecology of the visual arts - how to understand the world of fine art and visits our fine art studio talking with students about their work.

SIMON COSTIN

NIGEL CABOURN

Simon Costin is an internationally respected art director and recently curator who has worked on commercial designs for Alexander McQueen, Hermes, Harrods, Gareth Pugh and set design for Tim Walker. He is renowned for the conceptually ambitious nature of his designs and his event and exhibition conceptualising. Costin’s artwork has been displayed in many exhibitions, at venues as diverse as a forest in Argyll, the ICA in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Nigel Cabourn has worked in the fashion industry for over forty years producing collections, which are not influenced by ‘fashion’ trends but driven by inspirational stories of real people in history and vintage military, outdoor and work wear pieces. To this day, Nigel remains the hands-on driving force behind the Nigel Cabourn brands – Authentic and Mainline - working closely with his design and production teams and various collaborators to produce around 18 collections each year.

ZOE YORK

GRANT MONTGOMERY

Zoe York has been a senior buyer (gifts, greeting cards, Christmas) for the Fenwicks department store for many years and has also established a very successful online card and gift business.

She has an unrivalled knowledge of this market place – what sells and what doesn’t. Zoe who also works as a consultant, works with students to develop commercially understanding around products and give advice on entrepreneurship.

Grant Montgomery – BAFTA nominated Production Designer with credits including Peaky Blinders, Jamaica Inn, Lewis and Death Comes to Pemberley. Grant is Production Designer on the forthcoming, major adaptation of Beowulf as a 13 part series for ITV. Costume and Production Design students have gained valuable work experience on these large scale sets.

MARTIN PARR

ROWAN JOFFE

Martin Parr is known as the chronicler of our Age. A documentary photographer, he is known for projects that take an intimate, perspective on modern life and social class. His major projects have been rural communities (1975–82), The Last Resort (1983–85),The Cost of Living (1987– 89), Small World (1987–94) and Common Sense (1995–99). Since 1994, Parr has had around 40 solo photobooks published and has featured in around 80 exhibitions worldwide.

Rowan Joffe is an internationally acclaimed award winning writer and director. Accolades include BAFTA Award for Best Fiction Director 2009 for The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall, Rowan also wrote and directed the screen adaptation of Before I Go to Sleep, which starred Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth in 2014. Rowan provides advice and talks to students about the process of producing major motion pictures as well as TV series – taking them from concept to screen.

JULIAN ROBERTS

ANDREW CONINGSBY

Julian Roberts has shown twelve womenswear collections during London Fashion Week under the labels ‘nothingnothing’ and JULIANAND’.

Julian has developed the ‘subtraction cutting’ method of hollow construction for men’s and women’s fashion garments, which has been taught and demonstrated to CCAD fashion students.

Andrew Coningsby is the chairman of The Association of Illustrators. Andrew has given students access to the business end of illustration he runs Debut Art one of the largest illustration agencies in Europe with students gaining real insight into this aspect of the profession. Andrew owns the prestigious and stunning Coningsby Gallery in London where he allows our students to exhibit each year giving them access and visibility in the capital.

INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS We support our students to get real world experience through our Industrial Partners – well known and highly regarded companies, who work with us on a regular basis setting Live Briefs and providing work experience destinations.

Paperdove may not be a name you know but you will have bought their products. They design greetings cards for the UK’s major charities. As an industry partner Paperdove work with our staff and students on live-brief projects – producing designs for the real-world. Not only that, they offer student work experience and a job destination for graduates.

Nobrow and Flying Eye books – quickly becoming the publishers of choice for illustrated books Sam Arthur founder and Managing Director has not only visited and spoken on a number of occasions but opened up his London Offices for students to visit. Again through these close ties Sam has also contributed briefs for the students to tackle and understand what they will be dealing with when graduating from the college into the industry.

Paul Windle Creative Art Studio have an impressive 25 year international track record they are the studio of choice for Disney and Warner Brothers – designing consumer products. They also work with Lego, BBC, Ravensburger and many other high street names. As an industry partner the studio crew work with students on live projects around the licenced product industry, including branding, design for print and product presentation & packaging. Opportunities for work experience and employment in their studio.

British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) Chris Harper, Chief Executive of the BIPP worked with photography students at the college and gave a series of lectures on the photography industry and seminars on fashion, wedding and portrait photography, alongside BIPP Fellow, Kevin Wilson. As part of the lectures, Chris and Kevin discussed their career development, provided an overview of the photography industry and how technology has changed the photographic landscape from film to digital. The students were then treated to a series of practical photography sessions in and around the college site in Hartlepool, using their skills gained during the course and taking on board the expertise and advice from the BIPP team.

Phase One – is a Danish company specializing in high-end, Industry standard, digital photography equipment and software. It manufactures open platform based medium format camera systems and solutions. The company works with CCAD to offer students accredited training in their equipment and Capture One processing software giving them a real advantage in seeking employment.

CCAD is the only college they work with.

CULTURAL PARTNERS In the creative sector real world experience is not limited to the private sector we also have Cultural Partners – organisations, such as museums and galleries, who work with us on a regular basis setting Live Briefs and providing work experience destinations.

Beamish Museum is a living, working world famous open air museum hosting exciting programs of events and exhibitions. Gillian Wolf Costume Team Leader, has employed our students as well as engaging them in work experience but more recently our students have worked on a live project making costumes for The Festival of 50’s. Gillian manages a very large full wardrobe department – our students gain valuable insight into the operation of this complex world. The Museum has also kindly donated part of their costume archive to our Costume department which the students use as part of their research. The College is continuing to work with the museum as its major expansion progresses.

Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children’s Books – work with Illustration and Graphic Communications students – they are a key partner in the development of CCAD’s acclaimed international Festival of Illustration. The Centre has a range of inspirational archive materials and collections which give students in depth access to the collaborative creative process behind illustrated literature – the partnership between artist and writer.

Tees Valley Wild Green Places – this is a five year partnership – a major Heritage Lottery funded project working with councils and community groups across the region to revitalise and engage people with the green spaces around them. CCAD students gain work experience as photographers and film makers.

Students work on Live Projects in film and photography to document these communities and the places they live.

Bowes Museum housing internationally renowned collections has an acclaimed reputation for staging a top class exhibition programmes including Vivienne Westwood, international milliner Stephen Jones and Henry Poole, the company that founded Savile Row tailoring. Our students have the privilege of having personal guided tours of the exhibitions and access to the costume archive. A recent live project collaboration with the Museum featured the exhibition Birds of Paradise, a stunning exhibition featuring top designers Prada, Gucci and Alexander McQueen.

Durham and Cleveland Police Tactical Support Unit – BA Film and moving image production students joined forces with North-East firearms experts to make a series of videos to promote officers’ skills. Director of training Insp Andy McGregor-Taylor approached CCAD’s Creative Film and Moving Image Production degree to help with its global marketing, a project aimed at boosting links with the community. A film crew spent three days at the centre meeting staff, planning the videos and shooting the footage with police personnel in a variety of scenarios, from robberies to hostage situations.

Insp McGregor-Taylor said: “We needed an up to date dynamic video and also wanted to offer local students the opportunity to become involved in a genuine project. We showed them the facility and listed the areas we wanted highlighting and they did the rest. They have been incredibly enthusiastic, very professional and great to work with.”

ALUMNI STORIES Year after year our graduating students add to our list of successes within the creative industries. Students go on to establish themselves as up-and-coming entrepreneurs in a number of ways, from generating well-known brands to creating and scriptwriting blockbuster movies. Some students go on to study at post-graduate level, but the majority of students transition into employment, many of which are working for highly reputable companies such as the BBC, Abercrombie & Fitch, Disney, Formula One, John Lewis, Ferrari World to name but a few.

BILLY CESSFORD

BOO GEORGE

Graduated with first class honours degree in Production Design for Stage & Screen in 2012, since then Billy has carved out a fantastic career as a scenic artist, working on TV shows such as BBC’s popular series ‘The Paradise’ and ‘Inspector George Gently’, as well as national tours for’ The Lion King’ and ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’. To date, Billy has worked on props for ‘Captain America’ and the ‘Hunger Games’ at Madame Tussauds in London. He has also worked on the icebreaker prop for the Paralympic Opening Ceremony in Sochi, Russia, as well as the creation of London’s Hyde Park Summer Pavilion as part of Stage One.

Boo George, photography 2004, has made a name as a leading fashion photographer, having been dubbed “fashion photography’s next big name” by W Magazine and the 2013 winner of ‘The Shot’, a joint competition with W Magazine and the International Centre of Photography.

He works with commercial clients including Louis Vuitton and Emanuel Ungaro, and his work has been featured in a host of leading publication such as Love Magazine, i-D, British and American Vogue, Arena and V. After graduating, Boo began building his reputation assisting leading photographers Julian Broad, Phil Poynter and Bruce Weber before establishing his own profile.

AMANDA DERBY Amanda Darby, graduate from Production Design for Stage & Screen, is an accomplished sculptor and modelmaker, now working in the field of digital modelling as a digital production manager for Propshop at Pinewood Studios in London.

Recent projects worked on include; The Avengers Age of Ultron, Kenneth Branagh’s production of Cinderella and The Grand Budapest Hotel. She previously worked in research and development at Aardman Animation, where she set up a 3D scanning and printing department and has created over 8000 parts for the Aardman/Sony production. Amanda’s portfolio of work includes movies such as “Pirates! – In an Adventure with Scientists” and “Shaun the Sheep”, as well as commercials for Chevron, BT, PG Tips and Hovis. She has worked for many companies as a sculptor, mould maker and model maker, and has more recently gained experience in 3D printing and scanning, blending traditional skills and new technologies.

MARIA COOPER Maria Cooper, Textiles & Surface Design graduate now works for leading fashion designer Orla Kiely as a homeware and print designer, and is a former designer for retail giants H&M and British fashion icon, Zandra Rhodes. After graduating from CCAD in 2004, followed by an M.A. at the Royal College of Art, Maria is now based in London with a career that takes her all over the world.

She began her career in Stockholm as womenswear print designer for leading your fashion retailer, H&M, followed by position as a visiting lecturer at CCAD, where she returned home for seven months to teach. This led to a position with international fashion designer, Zandra Rhodes as print designer, and is now home and print designer for Orla Kiely, designing her current collection of home wear including bed linen, lamps, sofas and ceramics.

ANDREW BOYD

ALISON LYONS

Andrew Boyd, graduated Textiles and Surface Design and was selected as one of the top textiles students in his graduating year, this acclaim lead to opportunities to exhibit at Textprint in London, Paris and Hong Kong and Premiere Vision, Paris. These exhibitions, which CCAD continue to offer students, lead to top fashion houses such as Jaeger buying his designs and a job opportunity with Ratti in Italy which then lead to him catching the eye of Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton. Andrew continued his career in Italy working on print development for Louis Vuitton with his designs appearing in the Louis Vuitton A/W 2011 collection.

Alison Lyons, graduated from Production Design for Stage & Screen in 2011 and has since gone on to build a career in costume design, with highlights including BBC’s ‘The Paradise’, Warner Bros’ ‘Wrath of the Titans’ and Fox UK’s ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’.

Other recent work includes working with UK film company, Rook Films, as a costume assistant on its latest production ‘Free Fire’, backed by Martin Scorsese and starring Cillian Murphy.

ALISDHAIR WILLIS

A Foundation Diploma graduate is currently the Creative Director of Hunter.

A creative genius, Alisdair has been a painter, a magazine publisher, a furniture manufacturer, ran a strategic communications agency The Anonymous Partner with clients such as Veuve Clicquot, a branding agency – Announcement where he represents clients such as David Beckham as well as being the husband of leading fashion designer Stella McCartney.

Creative Film and Moving Image graduate, Scriptwriter on productions such as The Tournament, which stars Ian Somerhalder (Lost, The Vampire Diaries) and Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty, Trainspotting)

ANDREW HODGSON An Entertainment Design (now titled Production Design for Stage & Screen) graduate has worked on the opening ceremonies for the last two olympic games along with various product launches. Primarily a sculptor for the film industry including movies such as: ‘Phantom of the Opera’, The last four Harry potter movies, ‘Batman begins’, ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’, ‘Prometheus’, ‘Maleficent’. Worked on the opening ceremonies for the last 2 olympic games along with various product launches. Primarily a sculptor for the film industry including movies such as: ‘Phantom of the Opera’, The last four Harry potter movies, ‘Batman begins’, ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’, ‘Prometheus’, ‘Maleficent’.

JAYNE DENNIS From Photography (2010), is snapping up awards as she casts her keen eye on the international stage. So far, she has won 16 national and international awards for her photography work including: The London Photographic Association Award, the PX3 de la Photographie in Paris, and the Australian Better Photography Magazine Award. Jayne said “The icing on the cake was being a finalist in the Worldwide Photography Gala Awards. An estimated 17,000 people entered so to be recognised was just fantastic.” Her work featuring Tim Andrews was exhibited at The Guernsey Photographic Festival 2011 and her latest achievement was winning an honour in the Black and White Spider Awards, a leading international competition honouring excellence in black and white photography.

LUCA FORNASARI A Creative Film and Moving Image graduate (2009) has fast-tracked his way around the globe back to his hometown of Milan to work on a video for Lamborghini after becoming an Assistant Producer for a film production company.

BRYAN JAMES A Graphics graduate who gained work placement at one of the most revered design agencies in the world soon after graduation. Now working as a digital designer. In 2012 Bryan was involved in projects which won an FWA (arguably the most revered web design award in the world). Awarded “Site of the Year Nomination” and “Information is Beautiful” award as well as being featured in The Drum, Web Designer Magazine twice and Dot Net Magazine – Also nominated for “Young Marketer of the Year” at the MiAwards.

JONATHAN SCOTT Creative Film and Moving Image graduate, Production Co-ordinator on productions such as Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, World War Z starring Brad Pitt and Sweeney Todd starring Johnny Depp.

FRANCES STRINGER Foundation Diploma graduate who has worked at the very top of the fashion profession. After leaving CCAD she worked as a designer for All Saints, Topshop, Aquascutum before joining Mulberry as senior designer, head of ready-to-wear design before moving on to share her knowledge as a high profile fashion consultant.

TOM DALEY A Graphics graduate who worked at the North East’s top advertising and marketing agency, Robson Brown after graduation. In 2010 Abercrombie & Fitch, offered Tom a chance to move to America and design graphics for apparel. At A&F he acquired necessary skills and knowledge to set up his own brand, Loyal To The King.

KELLY THACKRAY This Textiles & Surface Design graduate is currently working in the design studio for Monsoon Accessorize. Inspired by texture and nature, Kelly enjoys seeing her designs transformed in various ways.
