INTRODUCTION Cleveland College of Art & Design (CCAD) or Government School of Art as it was then called was first opened in Church Street Atheneum, Hartlepool in 1874. In 1897, it moved to the top floor of Lauder Street Technical College where it remained until moving in 1939 to the vacated Church Square School, which was completely destroyed by fire in 1966.
Hartlepool, as a town, has changed dramatically over the last 140 years, but one thing has remained integral throughout this time– its art school. The resilience and robustness of the institution on its journey through changing trends, economies and distinctive art practices is instilled in all learners as they embark on their creative journey from scholar to creative industry professional.
The College remained there until the building was completely destroyed by fire in 1966. The new College of Art and Design opened on the same Church Square site in 1968 where it remains to this day – a true School of Art in every sense of the word.
We are so immensely proud of our surroundings that we have used striking images of them throughout this website to show you exactly what the area has to offer creatives.
GRADUATE EMPLOYMENT The college’s dedicated university level campus equals the top performing UK art and design institutions, with 96% of its 2014 graduates in work or further study six months after graduating, well above the national average of 89 percent. Not only have we out-performed all the regional universities, including Durham University, Northumbria University, Leeds College of Art, Teesside University and University of
Sunderland, we also rank joint 5th in the UK, beating prestigious names such as Oxford and Cambridge. Compared with other specialist art and design providers, CCAD now ranks number one alongside Ravensbourne in London, and is beating higher profile institutions such as University of the Arts London and the Glasgow School of Art.

GRADUATING COURSES 2016 BA (HONS) COSTUME INTERPRETATION WITH DESIGN
BA (HONS) GRAPHIC DESIGN & COMMUNICATION
The work contained within this section represents the culmination of three years of study by students on BA (Hons) Costume Interpretation with Design. During their time on the programme they cover a wide range of costume specialist skills, all of which are an integral to working in the costume industry. There are many stages to making a costume – most of which go unseen therefore an audience may never appreciate the amount of technical skills and hard work that is put into making each costume before it appears on stage or screen. All the students have studied a variety of bespoke skills, which are unique to this degree, in order to prepare themselves for a career in costume and have also participated in live projects and work experience that has included ITV, BBC, Sunderland Empire Theatre, National Theatre London, Beamish Museum and Bowes Museum.
Graphic Design and Communication might traditionally be understood as a discipline of advertising and branding. It has a long history of commercial applications, especially in printed form. However, in the twenty- first century the idea of graphic communication is much broader. Designers are no longer just selling product, but making work for education, entertainment, and raising awareness of social and cultural issues. In the digital age, they must also take on new skills such as illustration, photography, animation, film and interactive media, as well as the traditional elements of typography and page layout. You will find all of this represented in this year’s graduate show as our students demonstrate their ‘vision’.
BA (HONS) FASHION The programme encourages creative approaches to the development of innovative and original fashion solutions. Experimental methods of garment development will take you outside the standard metric experiences of pattern cutting to create conceptual designs aimed at redefining the future of the fashion landscape.
BA (HONS) ILLUSTRATION FOR COMMERCIAL APPLICATION This degree is created by industry professionals for the next generation of industry professionals. Working with the vibrant, eclectic illustration industry is at the heart of everything we do. ”CCAD deliver a course that is forward thinking, dynamic and delivered with passion and knowledge. BA (HONS) PHOTOGRAPHY This programme explores a broad range of approaches to the culture of photography. Through a series of set and self-initiated projects you will develop creative and technical skills to specialise in one of the most exciting mediums used in contemporary art. You will gain experience through photographic theories, skills and practices enabling you to acquire the relevant knowledge to work in preparation for future careers and employment.
BA (HONS) PRODUCTION DESIGN FOR STAGE & SCREEN If you want to establish a career in designing for the entertainment and performance industries, this unique programme is ideal for you. Incorporating design for sets, props, costume, model making and character development, the programme equips you with the thinking, making and professional skills required to make an impact on this exciting creative discipline.
BA (HONS) TEXTILES & SURFACE DESIGN This exciting, innovative and vibrant degree programme is very well established with over twenty years’ experience. With currency, knowledge, expertise and contacts throughout the industry we can offer our students an all-round experience that will stand them in good stead for a lifetime in the world of design.
There are both national and international live project opportunities embedded throughout the three years of study and our lecturers and technician demonstrators bring a wealth of experience which compliments the diverse range of skills that the textile industry demands. Our graduates go on to have successful, fulfilling careers specialising in print and embroidery techniques for fashion, interiors and surfaces in design studios all over the world. Teaching, merchandising, magazine styling and freelance design are just a few other examples.
BA (HONS) CONTEMPORARY TEXTILE PRODUCTS This distinctive and relevant textiles degree allows you to establish your own creative identity in the design, creation, construction and presentation of textile products for the contemporary market while supporting and guiding you with relevant industry contacts and experience. This programme provides a fusion of designer-maker skills which give our graduates a competitive edge in the world of contemporary textile products with both design and professional skills. Our Contemporary Textile products graduates are specialists in their fields and many go on to have successful businesses and leave with the knowledge and the skills to carve themselves a niche in the commercial or textile art world. Others have gone on to create renowned jewellery collections and exhibit in the highest level galleries. Others are absolute stars in the community arts and teaching careers.
