WELCOME Welcome to the Summer Creatives 2012 Degree Show at Cleveland College of Art & Design (CCAD). We are one of the few specialist art & design colleges in the country. Based in the North East, we regard ourselves as a ‘hidden gem’, providing FdAs and BA (Hons) programmes that are forged with excellent industry links. From the moment students walk through the door we will be preparing them for future employment. As well as the outstanding tutor contact time, our students also benefit from professional practice modules (at all levels of study) to ensure that they are totally prepared for the workplace. We enhance employability further by offering our students added support with our new incubator units (p. 128) available after graduation as well as our concept shop (p. 129) providing excellent work experience opportunities. We are sure you will be impressed by the quality of work in our Summer Creatives Degree Show. We are immensely proud of our students, past and present, and hope that the production of this Degree Show brochure cements the legacy of 2012 graduates. FdA Creative Fashion Practices This programme places great emphasis on all aspects of the design process, from concept through to mass production. Most rewarding experience: Being a writer can be very tough so finishing a new script always feels like a great achievement and so in truth my greatest achievement so far is the recently completed screenplay for The Tournament sequel. It’s bigger and better than the first.
Most rewarding experience: Being a head of department ‘Gaffer’ on a Hollywood film ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’ at the age of 30.
Most rewarding experience: It was quite something working with David Mamet on The Winslow Boy – he was a great leader. So many directors are only good at either performance, or visuals, but he was a master & a gentleman.
Experience at CCAD: The lecturers and creative environment at CCAD were instrumental in helping me face the demands of the film industry. The policy of entering students’ work in regional and national competitions helped us to deliver work of a standard that can compete with the best of the work from around the country. Inviting industry professionals in to offer guidance and advice was always of great help. The best things about CCAD were and are the staff and lecturers. The staff’s commitment to preparing students for this ferociously competitive media industry is second to none in my experience.
Experience at CCAD: At CCAD I was given a good grounding in both film theory & practice. I was not only planning and making my own short films but working with other students shooting their films, so I was always busy. The programme offered a friendly but highly competitive atmosphere, perfect preparation for the freelance world of film & TV . The programme was heavily vocational & the experience of shooting lots of short films helped me progress faster once in the real world. Surviving in a freelance film & TV world is all about self-reliance, drive and determination. At CCAD we had to get our films made, and guidance and help was always available but in end you had to make it happen.
Experience at CCAD: One of the main reasons I came to CCAD was because of the film cameras we could use, and that experience as well as cutting on film gave me a valuable grounding in understanding the process. Not that any graduates should be under the illusion they can walk into a position higher than a runner or trainee, but that experience in the back of one’s head, goes a lot further than those people who just learn by the ropes, and just carry out procedure, not really knowing why/ how for example, film goes to the laboratory.
