BTEC Edexcel Extended Diploma Level 3 Art & Design
This course offers students the opportunity to become commercial and highly employable ‘creative problem solvers’ in graphics, illustration or associated industries. Tutors are industry professionals who teach students how to use the design process to originate creative and highly appropriate design solutions in response to assignments covering advertising, editorial design, packaging, marketing and promotions, storyboarding, illustration, branding, computer graphics, corporate identity etc. Students discover how to turn hand-rendered experiments into professional outcomes using dedicated, state of the art, Apple Mac computer equipment inline with industry standards. Their on course experience is far more in-depth than that offered by other courses and apprenticeships. In 2013/14 industry clients set over 30 live briefs and students also enjoyed the benefits of educational visits and successfully taking part in industry led competitions.
At the beginning of the second year of study, students opt to study a graphic design or illustration pathway after exploring both areas for the first year of the course. However, whether studying graphics or illustration, all students are challenged and have their expectations and talents stretched and moulded towards a professional work ethic. The course teaches what the design industry needs, not what education thinks it needs, yet still maintains the very highest educational standards. We are a grade one course producing grade one students. Duration: 2 years Entry requirements: 4 or more GCSEs at C or above including Maths and English at appropriate level, plus portfolio of work. (Please note – you do not have to have excellent drawing abilities to apply for this course). Final grades will give the following maximum UCAS point score of: 420 Successful completion of the course will give the skills and qualifications required to progress into a range of degree and foundation degree courses or to go directly into industry.

The idea behind your interview is to show us the kind of things you are interested in, for us to see how passionately you talk about your work and to help us make sure we find the best course to suit you.
A portfolio is individual to every student and it is difficult to say exactly what it should consist of.
