Unit 12 digital sketch book Leanne lobley
• Vector based graphics are made up of mathematical functions. • Vector images are similar to geometric diagrams, use of points and lines. • Vector graphics have different characteristics for each individual objects.
• Pixel based graphics is also known as bitmap graphics or raster images. • The word Pixel is made up of two words ‘pix’ for picture and ‘el’ from element. • Pixel is the smallest element of a picture made up of little dots consistent of red blue or green.

Zutto
Zutto is a digital artist, you can tell because she uses vectors to create her work. Zutto could also be classed as an illustrator because its quite cartoony. I think that zutto is a very good artist because I like how she uses dark and bright colours together. I find her very creative and imaginative with her work because I feel that very piece she has done has a story behind it. In her work I like how there are hints of neon colours to specialise bits of her work. For instance she has used a neon blue to made the water stand out more but because you notice the water first you are also able to notice the dear because its behind the blue object also the dear features stands out from the body so it makes you focus on the face. I really like zutto work because I find her creative and unique. I think that Zutto’s work is quite funky and fun and that she is open minded because of the work that she creates.
Illustration program
The tools I've used. • Ellipse tool- I used the ellipse tool to create my first circle for the body of my monster. After that I created two more circles one on top of the other circle half way and used a different colour so I didn’t get confused. I used the circle to create my hair for my monster. •
Group- after I recreated the two circles I grouped them together and moved them around to make sure they were grouped together.
•
Pathfinder- I clicked on windows and scrolled down to the pathfinder then I clicked on it and a little box came up. I clicked on the divide box so I could separate my circles.
•
Group- Then I ungrouped the circle’s again and moved the bits I didn’t want. After that I copied and pasted the piece that I wanted a few times to make sure I hade enough to do my hair with.
•
Hair- with the curve that I made with the circles I changed the shape of some of them and how big they or how small they are. After that I started to place the bits of hair on to my monster. I rotated, moved changed and flipped them to help create the look that I wanted for my monster.
Here I have made two different monsters from the same basic shape I made. I used different tools to recreate a monster that is totally different from the first one. I used shapes on the toolbar to create the eyes and mouth and I used different colours to make them different from one an other.
I saved both of the monsters in a jpeg file then transported it to power point. I did this so when I moved it over to power point all of the little bits stayed in place and I didn’t lose any of the features like I would have done if I just copied and pasted it from the illustration program to power point.
Drawing on illustration Collect an image from the internet that you would like to draw. After that copy then go to ‘edit’ and press paste.
Once you’ve done that you can make it to the size you want your drawing to be.
It will be more easier if you zoom right in to get as much detail and possible to make it look more realistic by getting all the correct points.
After that you are able to start using the process to drawing your picture.
First of all you start to draw the outline of the whole picture by clicking on the pen tool and dragging it of the side bar. Then click on the first one and start clicking on the picture where the curves are on the outline of the picture only
Then you click the curving tool to curve all the point into the right shape of the image you’ve picked. It can be a bit tricky but once you’ve got a hang of it, it becomes easy.
After you have done the outline of the image and put a base colour on it you are able to start going over the detail using the same process. Send the blank outline to the back of the actual image so you can the it again and be able to do the detail.
Here is a screen shot of the white outline send to the back so you can see the detail.
So now you can use the same process to do the detail in. I would start of just doing the outline of every little detail then you can add effects after you have done that.
This is the butterfly that I'm drawing with the program illustration.
First of all you select the pen icon to create the shape that is apart of the picture
Then you highlight the shape that you want to focus on by selecting certain point of the shape that will create dots to mark that point. Make sure that you reconnect the last and the first dot together to create a shape.
After you have made your shape all your lines will be straight, you need to click on the tool that says ‘convert anchor point tool’. This tool will allow you to bend the lines to the shape of the picture. This tool can be quite tricky because its has to handle bars. These handle bars allow you to move one side of the curve to the place you want or how you want it without moving the over side of the curve. Once you have shaped the lines to the picture you colour the shape in to a similar colour to the picture.
Then you just repeat the process till you have completely done then picture. I am really comfortable doing process because I find is easy to use the tools once you know what you are doing and get use to them.
This is my finished piece. I really like my butterfly because I like how I have blended the colours so they are not just block of colours they have shading and it makes it look more realistic. I also like the colours I have used and how they all go together and how the black emerges into the butterfly without seeing the different lines I used. I found the illustration program quite easy and handy to use because all the tools are there and labelled so once you’ve got the hang of it ,it becomes really easy to use. Even though you have to fiddle about to get the right look you want you are able to see all the different techniques you could use on your image and create different types of looks.
For the effects of the butterfly I selected effects and scrolled down to stylize. The tools I used are: feather, inner and outer glow and round corners. The feather tool blends the different colours together so it doesn’t look like block colours it looks more natural. The inner and outer glow but a little bit of glow after the colour either on the inside of selected piece or the outside. The round corners make sure that the corners that I used didn’t look as Sharpe as I put them.
Jpeg
Using the masking tool 1 First of all just like before you need to get a template of a object that you want your illustration work to be on. After that you need to use the pen tool again to create just the outline of the object. 2 After you’ve done the outline make sure you group it. Once you’ve group the lines you need to move your image on top of the outline and make sure the image is about the same size as the outline so you are able to get most of the detail on. Then you go onto ‘object’ on top of the tool bar then scroll down to clipping mask then press make and It will covert the image onto the outline of your object and create a mask on top of it.

This is what it looks like after you have used the masking tool. Make sure that your outline doesn’t have a black outline and a fill so it will do the mask.

My audience is aimed mostly at females more than males because the butterfly is quite famine. I would think that mostly older females would be attracted to my work because its quite mature and has subtle background colours to make the butterfly stand out. I think that my audience is the type to have a bit of spare money because my product isn’t priority, there for they would buy it out of there own pleasure.

Typography is technique’s of ‘arranging type’ to make language understandable. The arrangement of type is a selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading, tracking and kerning. Typefaces- Typeface is also known as font family. Typeface is set one or more fonts each composed of glyphs(An individual mark on a written medium that contributes to the meaning of what is written.) that share the same design features. Point size-a point is the smallest unit of measure. It is commonly called ‘pt.’ for short. The point has been the unit for measuring font size, leading and other minute items on a printed page for a long time. Line length- this is the width filled by a block of typeset text, measured in inches, picas and points. A block of text or paragraph has a maximum line length that fits a determined design. Leading- This is the space between the lines of the text. It is also known as line spacing or interline spacing. Tracking- This is the space between letter so that it is easier to read or understand. It is also known as letter spacing. Kerning-is adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font, usually to made an understandable result. Kerning adjusts the space between individual letter forms, while tracking adjusts spacing uniformly over a range of characters.
Artist research
David Carson is an American graphic designer and surfer. He is the art director of a famous magazine called ‘ray gun’. This is a alterative rock n roll music magazine. The magazine was edgy, chaotic, distinctive in appearance. David's type of art was known as grunge typography. This is a cover of the magazine ray gun done by David Carson. As you can see you are already attracted to the picture as soon as you see the cover, I think that he is trying to make the audience be fascinated by his work by how he has changed the angle of the picture. By turning the image upside down then having a normal based font and place them together makes it stand out from other magazines. Although the background is a pale colour it makes the magazine more mature and effective because the background isn’t to busy to get confused what the main story is, it also makes the picture more noticeable and clean. By making the text white and simple on a dark background, you are able to see the text stand out, by having both black and white together it makes the text almost glow from the dark image. He has placed the text well because neither text or image over power each other they are both subtle and clear. I think that on this cover David just wants the point across, by using a pale background and a dark photo and white text. This will have an impact on the audience because he is making it more mature and suitable for everyone not just the magazines audience, But he is also added a little quirkiness by having the photo upside down. He making his audience more broad so they could expand. Its simple but effective.
I really like David's work because its very unique. his style is different from everything else.. Sometimes it’s a little dark, something its quite bright sometimes its more imagery than text and visa versa. I like how non of his pieces are the same, each has its own characteristics and tells its own story. Each pieces of work has different techniques and different fonts. On the Pepsi bottle I like how in the bottle he has like a little poem inside it but it has no outline yet it still looks like a bottle and a can. I think that there is a lot of hand drawing on these examples of his work. Because on the right hand side on his poster he has ink splashed over the page and how he has written the letters. Then he would most likely have scanned the page in and using the computer start taking out bits of the letters to make it look worn and layer words on top of each other.
First of all you need to create a pattern. By creating a pattern you select brush libraries at the top of the page where your tool bar is.
After that you need to click on the brush tool at the side of your tool bar
Once you’ve done that you can play around with the brush strokes and the colours to create a pattern
Then you need to collect a image that you like. It would be a lot easier if the image doesn’t have a background
Once you’ve copied and pasted it you need to click on a button that says image trace.
Then you need to keep clicking the background till it goes into a selection box then press delete.
The difference is that there is no more detail and shading. Its just the basic shape.
Then you need to click on the button expand to get all the lines of the image. It will highlight in a blue colour so you know you have done it.
After that you can delete all the white shapes inside the butterfly so all the butterfly is empty
Make sure you group your pattern together so when you move it bits don’t move and you can move it all at once.
Make sure you also have a copy of your image in case things go wrong then you’ve a spare one to play around with Once you’ve done that then you click on windows tool button and go down to swatches
You should end up with a little box full of colours once you have done that you drag your pattern into to swatch box
So it looks like this
Then you are able to play around with the colours and your patterns to create a piece of typography
There I have made my pattern bigger to fit the page then I selected the button ‘stroke’ then clicked on transparency tool, and made my pattern into soft light. Then I changed the opacity to 50% to make it more faded and light. There I just changed the colour of my butterfly to the pattern I created earlier. What I did was selected the pattern on swatch box and it changed the colour to the pattern. Then I just made an outline to make it stand out and more clear.
Here I have just made a few copy's of the patterned butterfly and changed the size of them and tilted them around a little and placed them on the page
Here I have added more butterfly's to the page. Each one has different effects on them to make them look different the light blue one I just changed the colour and the outline of the butterfly then changed the opacity to 50 %
The next thing I did was I inserted some text. I clicked on the type tool button. Then I clicked on font then selected the font I wanted. Then I typed the word free’ and other words that I think relate to my image.
Then I clicked back on type and selected create outline, this lets you to move each letter and change them individually. Now you are able to change the shape of the letter the size the colour to how you want it to look like
These are my final pieces of work for typography. I enjoyed doing this because you were able to do anything you wanted and you can play around with wording and pattern. I like second the best because I was more creative in using the tools. I played around with the words and the sizes and shapes of the butterfly. I created my own pattern by using different brush strokes and colours. I found this task quite easy because you are able to do your own thing with it. You can change the colours of the butterfly from what they were originally which I like. I think that typography is a fun but serious way to get things across because you can have images that will attract the eye and then texts that will make them want to read what it says. You are able to have fun with the images because you can turn them up side down have them diagonal or even layer them then you could layer the text on top to make it even more appealing.
JPEG
A jpeg is a file of an image that you can transfer onto a different program. The JPEG doesn’t let bits go missing or be misplaced. Unlike if you just copy and paste an image that you’ve made things might be not be the same it might be smaller or things might not have copied properly. Also the Jpeg keeps the quality from the original programme and transfers it to another programme and keeps the quality.
copied Jpeg You can see the quality difference from the JPEG to the copied and paste image. The JPEG is still smooth around the edges where as the copied image the edges is all ragged and uneven.
How to Jpeg First of all you need to go to file and scroll down to export. Click on it then it should say save you need to change the bottom bar to JPEG then press save.
My final evaluation on digital work. The things I have found out using digital programmes are: • • • • • • • • • • • •
You are able to make your work individual. It is more easier to create your work- if you make a mistake or you want to change something you can just press back where as on paper if you do something wrong you have to restart over. You can save your work and back it up but on paper if you lose your work you have to redo it. You are able to place imagery onto many objects- this will be good if working in industry. Typography can be used in bill boards and adverts at high quality also safely send by email. Once you have learnt where all the tools are and how to use them the programme is quick- this is good for business. Easily adapt file. You have a good range of different tools to use in one place instead of buying them all and having to find them. Programmes are good to use but if you don’t save them you will lose your work. Its good for working quickly- on time for deadlines. You have to know the software for it to be easy and quick- take time to get to know the software. Its great for zooming in and been able to do detail.

It makes your work look professional Manipulation is much quick in comparison to doing it by hand drawing It can be difficult to develop your own drawing style
Research on paper puppets
I really like the shadow puppets and the hand drawn puppets( the animals) because I love how simple yet effective they are. Even though the shadow puppets are just plain colours it is able to set the mood which it wants and your able to see the emotion in the puppets.
I like all the layers on the hair because it gives the puppet a bit more attraction. I also like all the different types of clothes you can make to change the outfit of the paper dolls on the top right.
I like the rabbit because I like how detailed and cute it looks. You can also move the legs and head like a real puppet. This could be the type of puppet I want to make?
This is the type of theme I want to create my puppet with. I like how dark and quirky but cute they look. I like the little skeleton because its so small and its 3D I like how the head is really big compared to the body. I love how well detailed the shadow puppets can be and you can tell what character it is representing . I like how there can be many different senses and create a different feel to each one.
Paper puppet experiment steps
Using shapes
I really like my puppets of ‘jack’ from Tim burton. I like how much detail I did using the graphic tablets but I think it was a bit to complicated to make a small puppet because of the holes that need to be placed in to make it move. Also I could have done something of my own ideas instead of just doing something from Tim burton, I could have made it my own and add detail to how I wanted my paper puppet to look like. It would have been more simple to make yet still have the detail and quality that it needs.
This is the end result of my paper puppet experiment. I decided to do jack from Tim burton because it fits with the theme that I want to do and he is quite simple. I just used shapes to represent his body and head then I drew the face features in. After I grouped them together and connected all the parts together. I did this so I create cut outs to put the pins in to make his legs and arms move. I just used a small white circle and went to the tool stroke then clicked on ‘ dotted line’ to create lines on the outline on the selected piece to indicate that it needs to be cut out. I did this with each individual part including the small white circles as well.
Using graphic tablet
This is what I drew of jack using a graphic tablet. It was the first I've used a graphic tablet and it took me a while to get use to how it works. Basically it give you that bit more freedom of using a pen instead of a mouse so you are able to draw more accurately. Its like drawing with a pen or pencil but on the computer. I really like using the graphic tablet because its more of your drawing than shapes so it more free and personal, you can add as much detail as you want you can draw how you want it to look like. You can also make your work look more complex and bold instead of just simple.
Over all I liked using the graphic tablet better because you are more capable of getting emotion and feeling across in the drawing. Although when you draw using shapes you can get more sharpness, you are able to put a lot more detail in without it taking to long or it might be to complicated when using the tablet. As you can see, I've added a little shading in the face on the second on and used different tones on the suit and not on the first one because it was more easy to do using the tablet. Once you are able to get use to using the graphic tablet it can become a useful tool to use when you want to draw detailed pictures or complex parts.
Puppet making- jack
Strengths • Quirky theme • Really want to make an articulated character • Like the movement • Like deciding which bits move • Being able to use the graphic tablet • able to be individual- Can pick what theme you want it based on • Not as time consuming using shapes for base outline
Weaknesses • Too much like Tim burtons • Very time consuming – may need to make colour fill areas or colour in Photoshop • Maybe not as cartoony • Takes time to get use to the graphics tablet • Maybe make work more complex and detailed. • Make work more personal? • Can be complicated using shapes for detailed pictures
Design ideas Negatives
Positives • Like the graphics tablet
• Maybe make it to much like a character
• Quirky designs
• Make it to complicated
• Want to create purely digital
• Not detailed enough
• Like the shadow type of puppets
• Takes time to get the look I want
• Maybe do a twist on a character- The opposite side of little red riding hood/ Alice in wonderland
• Not enough time to experiment more • A completely new idea- start from scratch • Don’t want to copy of artist
• Use different techniques I have decided to base my paper puppet on shadow puppets. I find them very interesting and unique and you are able to do many things with them . I'm aiming my theme to be alternative from the normal fairy tale story line. I want it to be quite quirky and have that hint of darkness in them.
Sample of technique Using pathfinder
• •
• Collect two images that you want. Place the object over the person and position • it how you want it to look. •
Go to window then scroll down to pathfinder then click on it after that a box should appear. Click on the box that says join them. Now you have a one whole shape
Idea Drawings/ experiments Using pathfinder

Using graphic tablet
I find that I like using the path finder technique more suitable than using the graphic tablet for what I want my outcome to look like. Using the path finder makes my work look more mature and profession and not as cartoony like the tablet. Being able to use both techniques made me realise what I want my final piece to look like and have a better understanding on how I can active that. For my final piece I will be using the path finder technique because I find it more easy and better to do my puppet shadow. I can add all the little detail and not make it look more professional .
I decided the put these to experiments together because I think they go well. Having the scene in the background will set a mood of the girl been serious because she in the woods with an axe.
I decided to chose this as my final piece because I like how much detail I have put in this. I have created a scene with dead trees and leaves because I wanted to give it that mysterious look and make the viewers think ‘ why is there a young girl in the woods?’ Also I wanted to put a twist on the story of little red riding hood so I decided to make the girl look more older and added wolves as her hair to say that the wolves are apart of her. I added the axe to say that she can handle her self and is able to look after her self, to say that she isn’t scared and she will do what she needs to. Putting a wolfs head in the basket shows the revenge that she wants because of her past. I worked really hard making the girl figure and the scene. Making the scene was hard because when I was placing the leaves I had a problem making them look like there was a pathway in the middle, at first it just looked like a pile of leaves. I was able to change the angle of the leaves and make them look flat so it looks like they are on the floor.
Evaluation outcome I think overall that making paper puppets have seen a really good experience to be able to get use to using programs like illustrator and Photoshop. • • • • • • • • • • • • •
You are able to use different techniques to make the piece how you want. Have good use of different tools and techniques Can use tablet or shapes Able to work quickly once your able to use the program Makes your work look professional Easy to learn Able to backup files Can redo do work without fully restarting- if you don’t like little bits Able to tweak or change things on your piece without to much hassle Able to make the work your own Able to base the theme on anything you want Piece of work can have as much detail as planned Able to experiment with ideas
• Was able to take time to decide what my final piece was going to look like
• Experimented with graphics tablet and a technique called path finder • Linked it with my research • Looked at different puppets • Focused on shadow puppets
Final Evaluation The artist that I have researched about using digital media are Zutto and David Carson. Even though they both do digital work they are both different types of artists. Zutto is known as an illustration artist. This is where they purely create everything on the computer, starting with the basic outline to the final piece. Whereas David uses source material. Source material is using photographs and images and texts also he hand writes then scans it into the computer to make it digital. He uses these materials then puts certain bits that he likes together, more like a collage to create his final piece. I think its great that David uses different sources because it could help him get more ideas or improve them also it’s good to see a range of different media so its more interesting to look at. I find that zutto is really creative because she is able to produce pieces of her head and be able to improvise from what she already has and make her work look good. She can jot ideas down then experiment from there and use different tools to create different effects. I find computer art very interesting and creative. Even though its not made by hand some pieces of art work can look extremely detailed. My favourite piece of computer art is generated art. Generated art is art work that is produced on the computer, you can get all types of images like space, planets and lighting bolts. The reason why I like generated art is because of how detailed it is yet its not over the top. It uses different contrast and bright colours to make the image more eye catching and interesting for the viewers to see. The benefits from working on a computer to working traditionally is that your work is in a more secure place so you wont be able to lose it or have to start over again if something is spilt on a traditional piece. If you are use to the program you are using you are more likely to work quicker and better because all the tools you need are in one place and you are able to tweak things that you don’t like without restarted over. This is beneficial because you will be able to hit your deadlines on time and not have to post it through the mail and worry about it breaking or getting ruined, you can simply just email your work to your manager. Some of the down falls from working digitally is you may loose your work if your computer breaks or crashes and you haven’t saved the work. If a computer is slow then it may take more time to complete your work to the standard you want. There are three main ways of working when you use digital media. Completely digital is when all there work the artist makes is on the computer, using different types of programs to create the work that is expected. Then there is digital work that uses source materials as well So they combine the computer tools with images and texts from the internet and books. Also there's artists that’s do there artwork traditionally and only use make it digital by scanning it into the computer and send it off in a email because its quicker. I have worked digitally by using illustrator. I created my t shirt designs by fully using the program and all the tools that are there like glow, feather and smooth, by doing this worked digitally. Also by creating my final piece I have worked digitally because I used a technique called pathfinder. Over all I find that using computers has give me a different advantage from working traditionally because I find using illustrator is more to my taste. I am able to experiment with different tools without worrying about hitting my deadline and I can produce work that looks professional. Having to learn about new techniques has gave me more confidence with my work because I know if I am not able to make it traditionally and have the look I want I am able to give it a go on the different programs that I have learnt about. I have learnt about the benefits within using the programs and tools that are there and how you can change little bits without having to restart and been able to have your work all in one place and not have to worry about it been lost or ruined. You are able to do many different things with working digitally, it gives you more of a variety of different techniques and tools you can do to your work and if you don’t like it you can just change it.
