About Us The Northern School of Art has been established for almost 150 years. It is the only specialist provider of art and design programmes in the North East. It offers a distinct teaching and learning experience for students wishing to pursue an exciting career in the booming creative industries. Its further education (FE) provision for 16+ year olds is delivered from its Middlesbrough Campus, whilst its higher education (HE) for 18+ year olds is housed within the University-level campus at Hartlepool. Additionally, the School runs a successful ‘Saturday Club’ at its Middlesbrough campus for people aged between 6 and 16 years.

Why Outreach? Our outreach activities aim to support schools and colleges in inspiring their pupils - raising their aspirations and providing them with the information they need to make clear choices about their future. As a specialist institution, we have an added challenge of promoting the value of the arts and creativity in a sector heavily-geared towards STEM subjects. It is important for us to ensure young people can make well-informed decisions about their future careers. This involves them being immersed in experiences which open their mind to alternative possibilities to STEM-related careers. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport released figures in November 2018 stating that the UK’s roaring creative industries made a record contribution to the economy in 2017, smashing through the £100 billion mark. The School is a place where creative talent is celebrated and nurtured. It is a very exciting time for future creatives. We look forward to working with you.

The North East Collaborative Outreach Programme The School is a member of the North East Collaborative Outreach Programme (NECOP), a partnership of the 5 universities and 15 colleges in the region working together to support NECOP target students to progress to higher education. We are working together to increase awareness of higher education opportunities and progression pathways for young people and help both them and their key influencers understand what higher education opportunities are available in the North East. Many of our activities are designed to target those from under-represented groups in their endeavour towards further and higher education. We are supporting the Government’s aims to: •

double the proportion of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in higher education (HE) by 2020;

increase by 20% the number of students in HE from ethnic minority groups; and

address the under-representation of young men from disadvantaged backgrounds in HE.

You can find out more about the National Collaborative Outreach Programme by visiting the Office for Students website at officeforstudents.org.uk

Creative Teachers & Advisors The School has an established network for teachers and advisors as The North East Schools and Colleges Arts Network (NESCAN). This helps participants by: •

offering CPD sessions (many of these are free)

talks from keynote speakers

sharing the best practice on teaching and learning

socialising with other creatives over food and drink

providing advice on student finance, UCAS reference writing and portfolio building

engaging with Culture Bridge North East and the National Society in Education for Art & Design

Meetings or events If you are looking to run a creative event, meeting or conference away from your organisation, why not consider us hosting this for you. You could also include one of our tours or talks in with your programme.

Events at your school or college We can support events taking place in your school such as parents’ evenings, options evening, careers events, application days and open evenings. We can contribute to your students' portfolio development by offering something specific to the curriculum. Additionally, we can offer progression activities either on campus or in your own organisation. We now offer creative art lessons by The Northern School of Art. These sessions can be customised to fit in with your current curriculum.

Inspirational Talks for Schools

16 +

We welcome the opportunity to visit your school and provide fun, engaging and informative talks on creative education and careers. We cover a range of topics for aspiring creatives studying at any level up to post-16. These include: •

portfolio building

university application advice & interview preparation

writing a winning personal statement

learning about the creative director role and ‘Art as a business’

creative career routes

student life at a specialist art school

showcasing current student portfolios to raise aspirations for creative careers

Assembly Talks

16 +

This short motivational talk has been designed to fit easily within your school assemblies, lasting around 10-15mins. The aim of the talk is to inspire young people about the increasing (and varied) jobs market within the creative sector. Currently 1 in 11 jobs across the UK are related to art & design and creative subjects. Some of these jobs will almost certainly be suited to your own pupils. It is important for us to reach out to all the young people to dispel any misconceptions about creative careers. A prize is given to one student per visit.

ACTING 7

Creative Placements The School offers work experience for year 10 and 11 pupils at our Middlesbrough Further Education campus. Participating pupils will be provided with expert advice and guidance on their current school projects and take part in a small, fun project whilst having the benefit of being immersed in a specialist environment and working alongside our students. It is also a great opportunity to experience what it is like being a student at The Northern School of Art. They will be given a brief talk depending on the course they are interested in. They will be situated in one of our professional studios and work on building their creative portfolio within our dedicated specialist facilities. We request group members to be a minimum of 5 and these creative placements run during term time only.

Taster Days

16 +

We run taster days at specific points in the year to allow interested students the opportunity to experience life at a specialist art and design institution. This is open to all year groups from year 7 to year 13 and involves a variety of sessions allowing students to gain experience in new creative disciplines. Our taster day involves a full day experience where students: •

learn new skills and techniques

collaborate and gain confidence

work alongside creative practitioners

use industry-standard kit

explore the wide range of creative courses available

learn about the growing sector and job opportunities

All materials are included and a free lunch is provided. Taster days are really popular and usually on a ‘first-come first-served’ basis.

TASTER DAYS 8
